Wrestling’s 4R’s 11.05.12: WWE Smackdown. TNA Impact Wrestling & DGUSA Fearless Reviewed
How the 4R’s of wRestling Work!
Here is a quick explanation of the 4R’s. The column will run TWO times a week. THREE if there is a PPV. We will group our feelings on the shows in various categories: The Right, the wRong and the Ridiculous. The Right is stuff that worked very well: a great promo, a great match and so on. PuRgatoRy is a section between the right and wrong. It shows equal traits from both sides that cannot be ignored and needs discussed. It is not a bad place per say, as things can get remedied or go the wrong way the very next week. The wRong is what it sounds like: bad matches, bad or boring promos and so on. The Ridiculous is stuff that had no right on TV: Stupid angles and so on. And there is always a possibility of a 5th R, which is as bad as they come. This column is supposed to be analytical, and at the right time very critical of the shows, it was the whole reason it was created. This is not a “mark” column, nor a “smark” column, our goal is to analyze the show from many different fronts, reward the good and call out the bad. We will not apologize for our opinions, they are as they are, whether positive or negative.

* Television Champion Samoa Joe beat Magnus by disqualification in 3:43 of a non-title match [3/6]
* Zema Ion forced Christian York to submit at 4:20 of York’s Gut Check match [5/6]
* Jesse pinned Knockouts Tag Team Champion ODB in 3:55 [2/6]
* World Champion Jeff Hardy pinned Robbie E in 7:30 of a non-title match [4/6]
* Joey Ryan pinned X-Division champion Rob Van Dam in 1:35 of a non-title match [2/6]

[If you’re not familiar with these ratings, it’s my own Personal Entertainment Factor. I use a scale of 1-6 (6, in honor of the number of sides TNA’s ring should have), so there’s no middle rating.]
Samoa Joe vs. Magnus: Good match for both men as the feud continues on. The result makes sense, as does Magnus issuing the challenge.
Christian York vs. Zema Ion – The Match: This was the perfect showcase for York, as he had the crowd behind him. He has more charisma than half of the roster, including several champions. I really hope he gets a “No” – hear me out… If the Gut Check competitor gets a “Yes,” he/she gets a developmental contract with TNA. Yes, they appear on the company’s roster, but then they sit in OVW until they get a chance on television. York is 35-years old, and he’s a 16-year veteran of the business. OVW does him no good. I want Bruce Prichard to say “No,” explaining that the Gut Check winner goes to developmental, then offer York a permanent roster slot on the spot. Zema Ion can interrupt, saying that he beat York, York can go back to the indies. This would being out Hulk Hogan, who books a rematch for Turning Point.
Jeff Hardy vs. Robbie E.: Robbie is such an underappreciated talent for TNA. He deserves to be in a major mid-card program. He made a good showing in the longest match on the card, and made the champ look great.
Hardy-Austin Aries promo Another good promo for Austin Aries, and Hardy’s response was great. TNA just main evented a PPV with a ladder match in February, but I am okay with that. This will be a great match.
Joseph Park promo: The Joseph Park character blows away the Abyss character. Sting’s involvement made sense as well, and it was all a perfect set-up for the final segment.
Bully Ray vs. Devon: For once, I’m glad that we didn’t get the match. We needed some advancement for Aces & Eights, and we got it in the unmasking of Luke Gallows. I hope he’s named Isaiah Cash as he was in Ring Ka King—that name works, you can market that name.
The Announce Team Hand-Off: Not sure if the company just wants to be different than WCW, but it worked much better when Nitro just returned from commercial with new announcers. The Keneley hand off is just awkward.
AJ Styles’s Promo: The best wrestler in the company didn’t wrestle, he talked. I am amongst the minority who loved his jab at people named AJ and elevators. Roode turning down a challenge again isn’t the direction I want for him—but that’s just me. I do like the resulting match set for Turning Point (Roode-Storm-Styles).
Matt Morgan & Joey Ryan promo: Matt Morgan’s promo was great, and I really hope they see a big future for him. The time to push the guy is now. Joey Ryan’s promo? Eh.
Jesse vs. ODB: Even if Jesse were tremendously talented, I wouldn’t care less about him. I just can’t get behind this at all, and it sucks that Jesse and Eric Young are part of the main focus of the Knockouts Division. Considering that the combination of signed talent sitting at home and talent they’ve released brought in some of the highest ratings over the past few years.
Joey Ryan vs. RVD: Less than two minutes? No thank you.
Christopher Daniels, Kazarian, Willie Urbina, Hector Guerrero, Hernandez & Chavo Guerrero Jr.: Couldn’t care less about the champions, and I really hate the stereotypes that are being played. Sometimes stereotypes work. This isn’t one of those times.
Christian York vs. Zema Ion – The Result: TNA missed a perfect opportunity to give York the big win and really pop the crowd. They won’t pop nearly as loud when the payoff happens (assuming it does). And when they finally do have a Gut Check competitor win, they aren’t likely to be as over as York was on Thursday.
Jeff Hardy’s Inner Monologue: Seriously? This has to stop.
I love to saw things like “more good than bad” when I describe Impact Wrestling. I can’t here. But it wasn’t a bad show overall—it was “meh.” I appreciate the build for Turning Point—it’s already a better built show than Bound For Glory. But the matches were too short, and the Knockouts storyline just completely sucks. I do like the potential for Aries-Hardy II and Styles-Storm-Roode. And I am looking forward to Matt Morgan’s big push. SHOW RATING: 6.0 As a reminder, I will be going by the 411 scale… 0 – 0.9: Torture |

Smackdown! 11.02.12:
QUICK RESULTS
– Darren Young defeated Sin Cara @ 4:00 via pin [**]
– Rey Mysterio defeated Titus O’Neil @ 4:00 via pin [*½]
– Wade Barrett defeated Randy Orton @ 8:00 via pin [**¾]
– The Great Khali defeated David Otunga @ 1:30 via pin [NR]
– R Truth defeated Justin Gabriel @ 3:20 via pin [**]
– Big Show and Miz defeated Sheamus and Kofi Kingston @ 10:00 via pin [**¾]
R Truth defeated Justin Gabriel: This was a short and simple match, but overall I really liked it. For weeks I had been saying that Antonio Cesaro needs a feud, and a feud that people can get into. Following the HIAC PPV, Cesaro and Miz beat down Kofi Kingston on Raw, and that is where R Truth came in. When Truth and Kofi ended their tag team, they promised that they would always have each other’s backs. Truth made the big save on Monday for his friend, and it was natural to think that he could be Cesaro’s next challenger. And that was further cemented on Smackdown this week, as Truth faced Justin Gabriel. Gabriel was the last man to pin Cesaro, and faced him for the title at HIAC. Truth got the win, and now appears to be the next challenger for Cesaro. I love this, because Truth works hard, works well with about anyone, and the fans love him, and Cesaro needs to feud with a guy like that. Plus, I want to see him European uppercut little Jimmy.
Big Show and Miz defeated Sheamus and Kofi Kingston: Big Show and Miz defeated Sheamus and Kofi Kingston in the main event of this week’s Smackdown. The match was set up in the opening of the show, which was the usual opening talky segment. During the show, as they built to the match, they made sure to put over Big Show as the new champion well, especially in his segment with Miz. The match itself was done well, nothing spectacular, but good quality and I liked the finish where Show KO’d Kofi, and then messed with Sheamus enough to allow Miz to get the pin. They built Show up as a badass when he got his title chance, they made his finisher look deadly and I am glad to see that they didn’t immediately change it so that he is the chickenshit heel. Sheamus vs. Show was good the first time, they are going there again, and I have no issues with that.
MIZ TV = OPENING TALKY SEGMENT: I have talked about this in the past, but I am not a big fan of the show opening interview segment. I know why they do it, but it now appears to be a crutch that shows use 95% or more of the time. Sure they set up matches and advance angles, but when I see the show opening interview, unless I am recapping, I tend to fade off and not pay attention, because it bores me. Yes it was set up to push the Orton vs. Del Rio feud, as well as set up the Barrett vs. Orton match for later. But I am really sick of the shows opening virtually the same way each and every week. Excuse me for wanting something different.
Darren Young defeated Sin Cara, Rey Mysterio defeated Titus O’Neil: In all honesty, I love the idea of doing the singles matches between these two teams. The thing is that Rey and Cara have owned these guys, and they won on the PPV and on Main Event. So this could have been a chance to have the Prime Time Players pick up some wins, and maybe get some credibility back. Instead, Young got the predictable win over Cara, while Rey won his match. It just seems like the same old thing, splitting the booking wins and loses, so that at the end of the day it doesn’t matter. Basically, please stop trading so many wins, pick a team and go with them; otherwise when you keep looking this way, no one really gets over.
Wade Barrett defeated Randy Orton: Wade Barrett and randy Orton had another good outing on Smackdown, which started by the attack from Del Rio and Ricardo. They worked hard for the time given, and Del Rio’s return for a distraction, allowing Barrett to score the victory seemed acceptable. But again, it just seems like the same old thing, splitting the booking wins and loses, so that at the end of the day it doesn’t matter. I mean, what does it mean that Barrett won again, they aren’t clean wins. They haven’t made them seem like they are important. He isn’t getting title shots and Randy Orton is still being treated like the big star, which is why it ends up here. I once again will say that WWE had a tremendous opportunity when Barrett came back from injury, because he had a clean slate. Unfortunately creative is doodling all over it. Also, the attack at the beginning I felt was good enough to allow Barrett to win clean, but also allow an excuse for Orton’s loss.
Del Rio and Orton Brawl backstage, Randy Orton is the Worst Baby Face Ever: Following Orton’s loss, Del Rio was cutting a promo on Orton, running him down. This led to a backstage brawl, and the excuse to book next week’s last man standing match. That is all well and good, but I wasn’t a fan of the brawl. It came off as too goofy with the fight in catering, more like a comical food fight than an angry brawl. Also, I know they want Orton to be a badass, but in theory, throwing a “boiling pot of water” on Ricardo wasn’t exactly the most babyface thing in the world to do. I know some people loved it, unfortunately I just was not one of those people.
Backstage Bullshit, The Great Khali defeated David Otunga, More Backstage Bullshit: Comedy is fine at times, but this week I was not feeling it. The whole segment where Natalya wants to take over for Eve, leading to Otunga coming in and spitting coffee on both her and Teddy was just stupid. It wasn’t funny, and on top of that, the whole segment was to announce the return of The Great Khali. The match between Otunga and Khali was about as bad as you would imagine, but that’s not the worst part about this. This whole thing was designed to show Natalya backstage, smitten like a kitten over Khali. After his victory, Natlaya had to “thank him” for taking care of Otunga. Of course, she then had to discuss his BIG HANDS, and you know what they say about guy with big hands. They wear big gloves. Anyway, this was the down point of the show, and I could have done without this. Seriously, if it didn’t exist, I would be a much happier person.
NOTHING
Smackdown continues to be an acceptable, yet average show. The show had hit a stride for a while, but now just appears to be in a holding pattern with nothing really exciting going on. We had the same tired opening interview, some stupid backstage stuff, Khali’s return and Randy Orton throwing a pot of boiling water on a glorified announcer. Some stuff just boggles the mind. They did advance angles, and promoted the big match for next week’s SUPER SMACKDOWN LIVE via tape delay FROM THE UK and beyond. Again, Smackdown remains a fine show, but unfortunately it just isn’t must see TV. SHOW RATING: 6.4 0 – 0.9: Torture |

Dragon Gate US presented their Fearless 2012 iPPV on Friday night, and as usual, it was another goof effort from the promotion. Gargano had a fun opening match with EITA, who I wasn’t all that familiar with, but put in a good performance. The Scene continue to be completely average, and just not all that entertaining. The captain’s six man tag match was a lot of fun, and although I find The Gentleman’s Club to be a bit too goofy for the vibe of DGUSA, I cannot condemn their in ring efforts. Jon Davis continues to deliver in another strong singles victory, as he looks to destroy Gargano and win the promotion’s title. Ryo Saito & Genki Horiguchi vs. The Super Smash Bros was a very good tag team match, as the Smash Brothers continue to bring the goods in their DGUSA appearances. AR Fox vs. Ricochet was another strong match, as the final three matches were at about the same level, good work in all, but like most DGUSA & EVOLVE, there are just problems with getting the crowds into the shows. While these matches are good, if the crowds could actually engage and add to the heat, they would be even better. But alas, a match can be very good, but suffer from the crowds not engaging. Anyway, an entertaining show with a lot of good wrestling. I hope to catch the other two shows before Friday’s Rs. SHOW RATING: 7.8 What the numbers mean.. 0 – 0.9: Torture As a reminder, this is not a basic “how good was the show” number like a TV show, as I have always felt that a PPV is very different from a regular show. I have always judged PPV on how they built to a match, the match quality, crowd reactions to matches and angles, the overall booking, how the PPV leads into the future, PPV price and so on and so forth. I have added this in here for an explanation since so many have asked, and I have previously discussed it on podcasts. I understand that this may seem different, but that is how I grade. Obviously your criteria may be different. |
