Wrestling’s 4R’s 11.12.12: WWE Smackdown. TNA Impact Wrestling & DGUSA Freedom Fight Reviewed

November 12, 2012 | Posted by Larry Csonka

How the 4R’s of wRestling Work!
Here is a quick explanation of the 4R’s. The column will run TWO times a week. THREE if there is a PPV. We will group our feelings on the shows in various categories: The Right, the wRong and the Ridiculous. The Right is stuff that worked very well: a great promo, a great match and so on. PuRgatoRy is a section between the right and wrong. It shows equal traits from both sides that cannot be ignored and needs discussed. It is not a bad place per say, as things can get remedied or go the wrong way the very next week. The wRong is what it sounds like: bad matches, bad or boring promos and so on. The Ridiculous is stuff that had no right on TV: Stupid angles and so on. And there is always a possibility of a 5th R, which is as bad as they come. This column is supposed to be analytical, and at the right time very critical of the shows, it was the whole reason it was created. This is not a “mark” column, nor a “smark” column, our goal is to analyze the show from many different fronts, reward the good and call out the bad. We will not apologize for our opinions, they are as they are, whether positive or negative.

Let’s rock…

Impact Wrestling 11.08.12 (LIVE):
QUICK RESULTS:
* Bobby Roode pinned AJ Styles in 14:54 [4/6]
* ODB beat Tara & Jesse Godderz in 2:37 [3/6]
* Sting & Kurt Angle beat Devon & Doc by disqualification in 5:39 [3/6]
* Magnus, Christopher Daniels & Kazarian beat Television Champion Samoa Joe and World Tag Team Champions Chavo Guerrero Jr & Hernandez in 10:52 [4/6]

[If you’re not familiar with these ratings, it’s my own Personal Entertainment Factor. I use a scale of 1-6 (6, in honor of the number of sides TNA’s ring should have), so there’s no middle rating.]

  • THE RIGHT:
Bobby Roode vs. AJ Styles: Easily the match of the night, and it probably should have been the main event of the show. However, TNA advertised this as the opener, so they see some money making potential in them. That’s a good sign. Storm’s involvement was obvious here, but it was kept pretty minimal, so I am okay with it. Their PPV outing could be a match of the year candidate.

ODB vs. Tara & Jesse Goddrez: Surprised? So am I! This match was far better than I would have expected. And it’s mainly because of ODB. If this leads to ODB vs. Tara, I’m all for it. I am still worried that it’s really just a way to move Godderz up the card. It ain’t working.

Christian York’s Gut Check Answer is Yes: I am glad they didn’t manufacture a “No” from one of the judges to make it suspenseful. York obviously earned a contract, and we really needed a Zema Ion run-in to jump-start a program for York. Strike while the iron’s hot, right?

Sting & Kurt Angle vs. Devon & Doc: Worst match of the four on this show, but it was still good enough to be “right.” The Sting attack of the end was brutal, and should really end the Stinger’s career. It won’t, because it’s TNA, where Sting is still considered a full-time talent.

Samoa Joe, Chavo Guerrero Jr & Hernandez vs. Christopher Daniels, Kazarian & Magnus: Another match that delivers this week? Yup! This could have opened the show, but it’s good to see these guys get some “main event” love (in quotes since we ended with a promo).

Austin Aries & Jeff Hardy promo: Aries ends the night strong, which he should. Jeff Hardy took one hell of a bump off of the ladder. This match doesn’t feel like he main event of the PPV, as they’ve actually made Styles-Storm-Roode feel bigger. But I know it will deliver on Sunday.

Joey Ryan, Hulk Hogan and (later) Matt Morgan promo: I really like the fact that Hulk Hogan is putting Matt Morgan over. This can only lead to good things. Ryan’s getting better at delivering the “non-indie” promo.

    The 411

This was a great go home show for Turning Point. And it shows a fundamental issue with the Bound For Glory Series. A world title feud needs time to build, and it’s really hard to pull that off when you have the BFG Series. Maybe end it earlier? Regardless, this was a great show, and the pay-per-view is actually being sold as a “turning point” in several storylines. That’s unheard of in wrestling—it makes sense, it maintains continuity, and it’s entertaining. See, it CAN be done!

    SHOW RATING: 9

As a reminder, I will be going by the 411 scale…

    0 – 0.9: Torture
    1 – 1.9: Extremely Horrendous
    2 – 2.9: Very Bad
    3 – 3.9: Bad
    4 – 4.9: Poor
    5 – 5.9: Not So Good
    6 – 6.9: Average

    8 – 8.9:Very Good
    9 – 9.9: Amazing

    Smackdown! 11.09.12:
    QUICK RESULTS
    * IC Title Match: Kofi Kingston © defeated The Miz @ 12:00 via pin [**½]
    * The Prime Time Players defeated Mysterio and Cara @ 4:00 via pin [*¾]
    * Wade Barrett and Big Show defeated William Regal and Sheamus @ 13:00 via pin [***]
    * Falls Count Anywhere Match: Randy Orton defeated Alberto Del Rio @ 22:00 [**¾]

  • THE RIGHT:
KOFI BEATS MIZ…AND IS KIND OF A DICK ABOUT IT: The opening match on the Super Not So Live Smackdown this week was a rematch between Miz and Kofi Kingston. These guys have solid chemistry so I was happy to see that we’d be getting the match, especially since it played off of Miz getting the cheap victory on the previous Smackdown. They got a decent amount of time and had a solid match, which Kofi once again won. I am happy to say that because Kofi needs to be solidified as the champion, and move onto a good feud aside from Miz. With Miz leaving team Punk, and his offer of a handshake, I don’t think that it is out of the question to see Miz turn face sometime soon. On that note, they are really pushing the more serious Kofi, as was a complete dick and dropkicked Miz when he offered his handshake. I think that it is good that they are building a more serious Kofi in the ring, and with how over he is, especially with the kids, that’s a good thing. I am not sure if he is a main event star like some people think, but I am willing to give him a chance.

BARRET AND SHOW DEFEAT THE REGAL ONE AND THE GINGER: While some scoffed at the pub brawl angle this week, I actually liked it as it had a different feel to it. Sure it was a bit silly, but it got Regal involved on a UK show, and that is always a good thing. Also, it adds to the brewing saga between Sheamus and Show, which has been done well, and keeps Barrett involved near the main event. We ended up with a good tag team match, everyone played their roles well, and the world champion looked dominant. Some complained about the finish, and while I think regal is awesome, he isn’t full time, and Big Show is a giant. Show shaking off the knee trembler and destroying Regal with the KO shot was the right finish in this instance. This was good stuff, and I just wish Regal was used more often.

  • PURGATORY:
OPENING TALKY BIT…AGAIN I know, broken record time, I have talked about this in the past, and will continue to talk about it. I am not a big fan of the show opening interview segment. I know why they do it, but it now appears to be a crutch that shows use 95% or more of the time. Sure they set up matches and advance angles, but when I see the show opening interview, unless I am recapping, I tend to fade off and not pay attention, because it bores me. Yes there is a purpose; yes it helped further the Show vs. Sheamus feud and a set up a match for later in the show. But it is also a crutch that they rely on way too much. I just want something different.

THE PTP DEFEAT LOS HOMBRES ENMASCARADOS: The Prime Time Players defeated Mysterio and Cara on Smackdown this week, and while it was a win that was needed, it felt like a complete throw away. They have been feuding, on TV, PPV and house shows, and then they decide to give the PTPs a “big” victory, and it is in a four-minute match on a show that didn’t get advertised. While JBL tried to make this feel important, this just felt so, pedestrian. This match deserved more time, it deserved to be treated importantly, and it should have felt like an important victory for the PTPs. Unfortunately, this just felt like any other solid TV match. Don’t get me wrong, I love that the PTPs got a clean win over Rey and Cara, it just should have felt like a bigger deal in my opinion.

ORTON BEAT DEL RIO…AGAIN: Randy Orton defeated Alberto Del Rio, again, and overall it was “fine.” The match overall was fine, but it was built up over weeks and made to be the big main event of this show, and it felt very average. They worked hard, but the match felt like a good 14-minute match stretched to 22. The backstage stuff took the crowd out of things, and it felt like a very average TV version of a good match. I am not saying that we needed blood, crazy spots and tons of weapon shots; but at the same time, it just lacked that hate and intensity that a match like this should have had. Instead, we got a solid affair to end a solid, but again, unspectacular show. I know some liked it more than I did, and that is cool, but it just never clicked big for me.

  • THE WRONG:
    NOTHING

  • THE RIDICULOUS:
    NOTHING

    The 411

This week’s show was a little better than the past weeks, but unfortunately this did not come off as must see TV, and that is proof because most people forgot that the damn show was on Tuesday. Orton vs. Del Rio didn’t draw the people in, the LIE of it being LIVE didn’t draw people in; bottom line, Smackdown is a fine TV show, but far from anything that any fan will go out of their way to see on a weekly basis. I guess solid but unspectacular is better than bad, but not by much.

    SHOW RATING: 6.9

    0 – 0.9: Torture
    1 – 1.9: Extremely Horrendous
    2 – 2.9: Very Bad
    3 – 3.9: Bad

    5 – 5.9: Not So Good
    6 – 6.9: Average
    7 – 7.9: Good

Quick DGUSA Freedom Fight 2012iPPV Thoughts

    By: Larry Csonka

    * Jon Davis defeated EITA via pin [**]
    * Tony Neese & Papadon defeated The Scene via pin [**]
    * Arik Cannon defeated ACH via pin [**]

    * The Super Smash Brothers defeated Jigsaw and Fire Ant via pin [***]
    * NO DQ Match: Rich Swann defeated Chuck Taylor via pin [***]

    * Cima defeated Sami Callihan via pin [***¾]
    * Samuray Del Sol & El Generico defeated Genki Horiguchi & Ryo Saito via pin [****]
    * Open the Freedom Gate Title Match: Johnny Gargano defeated Ricochet, Akira Tozawa and AR Fox via pin [****½]

    QUICK THOUGHTS

The opening bouts of the show were acceptable, but nothing special. The Scene need to go ASAP and take Larry Dallas with them. They are stale, they never got over he whole time there, and just aren’t good. I would like to see more of Tony Neese & Papadon. Arik Cannon defeating ACH was head scratching in my opinion. Jon Davis’ angle has been great as he has been made out to be a complete beast, especially over the course of the weekend.

Above I have sectioned off the matches, because I feel that the show was a three-part event, with constant build to the main event. The Super Smash Brothers defeated Jigsaw and Fire Ant in a good tag team match/ SSB have been great in the DGUSA universe and I want to see more of them, and I also think that the CHIKARA guys need to make more appearances as they work hard, are something different, and simply deliver. Swann vs. Taylor was also good, but lacked the heat I thought it would have. Unfortunately that has been a weak point for DGUSA and EVOLVE, getting that super hot audience.

So after the soft open, the show picked up in the middle portion, and from there, shit got great. Cima defeated Sami Callihan in a very good back and forth match. The action was great, and while I think that Callihan needed the win more, I cannot fault them for the great action they provided. We returned to tag team action with Samuray Del Sol & El Generico defeated Genki Horiguchi & Ryo Saito. Samuray Del Sol & El Generico have been money in 2012 for DGUSA and EVOLVE, delivering as partners and opponents. El Generico is one of if not the best PPV wrestlers of 2012, why this man is not under contract to someone is still a mystery to me.

Finally we had the main event, and best match on the show. An Open the Freedom Gate Title match, which saw Johnny Gargano defeat Ricochet, Akira Tozawa and AR Fox to retain his title. The audience finally got into something to the point that it felt like a real main event caliber match. Some spectacular exchanges, and the big story was whether or not Gargano could not only survive, but also retain after the beatings he suffered at the hands of Jon Davis. Great action, great wrestling with a great story and crowd reaction make this a must see match. This was an awesome match and the kind of thing that DGUSA can deliver with the talent that they have.

At the end of the day, this was a PPV that was built well. It had the solid open, picked up in the middle and they hit a homerun with the final three matches. And that is why the show ranks in the top tier of my PPVs of the year.

    SHOW RATING: 8.4

    What the numbers mean..

    0 – 0.9: Torture
    1 – 1.9: Extremely Horrendous
    2 – 2.9: Very Bad
    3 – 3.9: Bad
    4 – 4.9: Poor
    5 – 5.9: Not So Good
    6 – 6.9: Average
    7 – 7.9: Good
    8 – 8.9: Very Good
    9 – 9.9: Amazing
    10: Virtually Perfect

As a reminder, this is not a basic “how good was the show” number like a TV show, as I have always felt that a PPV is very different from a regular show. I have always judged PPV on how they built to a match, the match quality, crowd reactions to matches and angles, the overall booking, how the PPV leads into the future, PPV price and so on and so forth. I have added this in here for an explanation since so many have asked, and I have previously discussed it on podcasts. I understand that this may seem different, but that is how I grade. Obviously your criteria may be different.
