My Take On 11.15.12: Looking at TNA Turning Point and DGUSA Uprising

November 15, 2012 | Posted by Larry Csonka

WELCOME!
Welcome back to the latest edition of My Take On! I have brought back the column this week so that I could catch up on my PPV reviewing, since I haven’t had time to do so in the Rs. Today I will be looking at the TNA Turning Point and DGUSA Uprising PPV events. I hope to get to writing about the New Japan Power Struggle 2012 iPPV event for the Monday Rs, and I still have to watch the entire event. As previously mentioned, with my return to writing the Rs on a more regular basis, I have tried to watch as MUCH PPV and iPPV as possible this year. WWE, TNA, ROH, EVOLVE, DGUSA and whatever else I can fit in. Lets get on with the column…

QUICK THOUGHTS

And I finally get to the middle event of the three-iPPV weekend from DGUSA, Uprising 2012. The show started off with Jigsaw & Fire Ant defeating Arik Cannon & Pinkie Sanchez. The match was a good, action packed opener, which I feel that you always need on a show. Jigsaw & Fire Ant got the victory, and I have said before and will again, the CHIKARA guys really need to be used more on these shows. I felt that they were a great part of early shows, always show up to work and deliver.

Akira Tozowa defeated Samuray Del Sol in the second match of the night, and in my opinion it was the match of the night. Two talented guys doing the most with the time that was given, and Samuray Del Sol continues to impress in DGUSA and EVOLVE.

Next up was more angle than match, as Jon Davis cut a promo about Champion Johnny Gargano, which led to a very quick non-title match, in which Davis won. The story of Jon Davis is a good one, and his constant promos and destructions of Gargano is good story telling. The squash made sense in the context of what they are doing, and the non-conventional booking was appreciated.

Super Smash Brothers defeated Ricochet & Rich Swann in the third match, and it was another good bout. All four men have worked well for the company, and they provide a lot of fun when they hit the ring. Super Smash Brothers are really a team to watch, either here or in PWG, as they have a lot of buzz and simply keep getting better. This was a good match, but it never hit that next level to be considered great.

Next was Chuck Taylor, Drew Gulak & Orange Cassidy defeating The Scene & Cheech. This was the definition of an average match, and the Scene continues to not be impressive in any way. The Gentlemen’s Club (Chuck Taylor, Drew Gulak & Orange Cassidy) is fine, but I just have a feeling that they should be so much more.

Sami Callihan defeated El Generico in the next match, which was a two of three falls match. They had a great match at EVOLVE 13, and I was expecting more of the same here. Unfortunately I felt that it never got out of second gear, as they had a good match, but one that simply felt like a good mid-card match. I simply just never got into it.

The main event was an Open The United Gate Title Match, where CIMA & AR Fox defeated Genki Horiguchi & Ryo Saito. This was a good effort from all involved, but the crowd just wasn’t into it, which again has been an issue for DGUSA and EVOVLE. Without that hot crowd, the good action down the homestretch just didn’t come off as good as it should have, which is a shame.

At the end of the day it is a fine event, especially for the price, but nothing you have to go out of your way to see. It was filled with solid to good wrestling, but quite honestly, if you are picking and choosing what to spend money on, you can likely pass on the show.

SHOW RATING: 7.0

What the numbers mean…

0 – 0.9: Torture
1 – 1.9: Extremely Horrendous
2 – 2.9: Very Bad
3 – 3.9: Bad
4 – 4.9: Poor
5 – 5.9: Not So Good
6 – 6.9: Average
7 – 7.9: Good
8 – 8.9: Very Good
9 – 9.9: Amazing
10: Virtually Perfect

As a reminder, this is not a basic “how good was the show” number like a TV show, as I have always felt that a PPV is very different from a regular show. I have always judged PPV on how they built to a match, the match quality, crowd reactions to matches and angles, the overall booking, how the PPV leads into the future, PPV price and so on and so forth. I have added this in here for an explanation since so many have asked, and I have previously discussed it on podcasts. I understand that this may seem different, but that is how I grade. Obviously your criteria may be different.

TNA World Title Ladder Match: Jeff Hardy defeated Austin Aries @ 21:00 [****½]

QUICK THOUGHTS

And now we will discuss the TNA Turning Point PPV. I have to say I am glad I had some time to clear my head to write about this, I was initially upset that I had to cover the event on VERY last minute notice, and I didn’t want that to completely cloud my view of the show.

The show started off with a hot start, as Samoa Joe defeated Magnus to retain the TNA World Title. While they have not had the TV title as many feuds, they have done well with the time they have received and they had a good match last month. This month’s rematch was better than their BFG bout. They work well together, they worked a great pace and they had the crowd involved well. This was a very enjoyable match, with Joe going over, but Magnus looking strong in defeat.

Eric Young and ODB defeated Tara and Jesse From Big Brother in the second match, and while there was the comedy you’d expect, it was more enjoyable than I thought it would be. Eric Young is just a great pro wrestler, and made sure to allow Jesse to look good. But I will also add that Jesse did perfectly fine in the ring on his first PPV. It wasn’t spectacular, and not what I generally like on PPV, but it was solid and entertaining.

RVD defeated Joey Ryan in the third match of the night to retain the X-Division title. It was better than the match they had on Impact, but for a title match on PPV, it didn’t do anything for me. I cannot say that I am excited to see the feud continue, and the action was passable, but again, not what you were looking for on a PPV.

The next match saw Doc defeated Joseph Park, in a match that simply went too long. I know some people love the Joseph Park character, and the crowd plays along well enough, but again, as a PPV match, this did nothing for me.

Thankfully the PPV picked up with the tag team title match, as Chavo and Hernandez defeated Daniels and Kaz to retain the tag team titles. They had a good PPV match, and while I think that Kaz and Daniels would be better as the champions, that is a personal thing. I will say that they worked well together, and did a lot to pick up the pace of the PPV, after the show slowed down after a hot start with the opener. This was exactly what the show needed at this point.

In the next match (Winner Gets a TNA Title Shot, Loser of the Fall Cannot Get a Title Shot Until BFG 2013), three of TNA’s best hit the ring, and again, they delivered. James Storm defeated AJ Styles and Bobby Roode to earn a title shot, and also, AJ Styles took the pin and received the punishment of no title shot until BFG 2013. Storm took out both men, but then pinned AJ Styles. Storm is the new #1 contender, while Styles is the one that gets the punishment, and they had a very good match and they told a good story. AJ sold the fact that he was “off his game,” not only via facial expressions, but also with “intentional slips” and such in his move set. A good match that got a good amount of time to tell the story, and likely set up the neat year long angle of AJ Styles trying to rise to the top once again.

Next up was Devon vs. Kurt Angle, and while I thought in theory that the match was a good idea, it didn’t come off all that well. Kurt Angle amps up his game on PPV, and while Devon reportedly tweaked his knee, the facts are that he couldn’t keep up and have a “Kurt Angle PPV caliber match.” Add into the fact that Aces and 8s appeared, did shit, Angle won and escaped; well, booking wise and wrestling wise, this just didn’t work for me.

And then we came to the main event, a rematch from Bound For Glory (which was a pretty damn great match) between Austin Aries and Jeff Hardy. While I have had some questions about Hardy as Champion, the one thing I have always said is that when he is motivated and in his element, he delivers, and along with Aries, they delivered an awesome main event. This match had a good pace, tremendous back and forth action, insane spots and the crowd was loving it. While it isn’t the kind of match you want these guys to have all the time, because of the risks, I will not bash it like some have for that. This was simply a great, great main event, and these guys work very well together, delivering back to back main event matches very worthy of their PPV slots.

As an overall PPV, I really enjoyed the show. The show had a hot opener, a good tag title match, a good #1 contender’s match and a tremendous main event. While I still have some issues with the TNA product, they delivered once again on PPV, and that is a good thing.
