Sports Entertainment 720 News Report 01.02.14

January 2, 2014 | Posted by Jarrod Atkinson

Welcome to the first SE720 of the year! It’s college football bowl season, and I hope to hell that my Oklahoma Sooners don’t get murdered by Alabama today. If so, unfollow JR on Twitter. Once again, I’m you’re favorite independent blogger Jarrod Atkinson, and I’m here to give you my 2 cents on all the news, rumors, and results from the last week in the wonderful world of sports entertainment. Let’s do this!

First of all, let’s all take a minute to send some positive thoughts to Mae Young, who has been hospitalized at the age of 90. Mae is as hardcore as they come, wrestling in 9 different decades. She is known for her comedy bits with the WWE, and if you remember the Attitude Era, her time with Mark Henry was disturbingly hilarious. And of course, there’s this moment.

Gunner and James Storm went to a double count out.
Stop trying to make me care about Gunner because it’s not going to happen. James Storm belongs back in the upper mid card, not working a program with “Mr. Intensity.” I don’t know if I can handle another month of “Ding dang ya’ll, he took my title shot.”

Lei’D Tapa def. ODB
I feel like Tapa and ODB could do more if they gave them more than 7 minutes with entrances included. Funny how we have 2 Diesel and HBK storylines going on in the respective women’s divisions of each company.

Ethan and The Douchebags def. Jeff Hardy and Sting.
You had to know that they would throw the kitchen sink at the Brothers of the Paint and they did. Ethan gets his win and if you listen to the dirt sheets, Jeff gets written of TV while TNA goes to Europe. I never know when contracts are really up so if we don’t see Jeff again then Dixie finally got smart and played it safe.

This week on Impact we will see the coronation of Magnus as the TNA Champion, Austin Aries vs Chris Saban in a match for the X Division title, Bully Ray vs Joseph Park, Gail Kim’s Open Challenge, and the much anticipated (…yeah.) debut of Samuel Shaw. In a perfect world they would give Aries and Saban half an hour and let them steal the show. In reality, 12 minutes. Prove me wrong Dixie!

Last week on Smackdown….
The Wyatt Family def The Usos
Antonio Cesaro def Cody Rhodes
The PTP def Rybaxel
Randy Orton def Dolph Ziggler
Daniel Bryan def Damien Sandow
Big E Langston def Dean Ambrose
Roman Reigns def Mark Henry
John Cena def Seth Tyler Black Rollins

As always, a good showing from Dolph as he sold the RKO like his job depended on it. We see the Shield starting to slowly come apart as once again Ambrose takes a loss and Reigns well, reigns supreme. But what a showing from Seth Rollins. I incorrectly said this match was on Raw in this week’s Wrestler of The Week column, but I will reiterate that Rollins held his own against Cena and it was awesome to see. Rollins has been the least pushed of The Shield lately, but if you followed his time in FCW/NXT, that guy can wrestle. I look forward to seeing what they allow him to do next. One question though, has anyone hit John Cena with a crossbody successfully? He always seems to roll through. He stole that from this guy:

And on Raw….
CM Punk def Seth Rollins
Dolph Ziggler def Curtis Axel
Big E Langston def Fandango
Damien Sandow def The Great Khali, but not really.
R-Truth def Brodus Clay
Daniel Bryan def Luke Harper
Daniel Bryan def Eric Rowan
Daniel Bryan and Bray Wyatt fought to a no contest.

It seems like if you do something good on Smackdown, you get rewarded with a match on Raw the next week. Rollins had a great match with Cena, and then he got to show his skills against Punk. I was a big fan of the ending of the match, Rollins and Punk work well together. When Orton and Cena are away, Daniel Bryan gets to be in the main event. Bryan ended 2013 by joining the Wyatt Family. But is this going to be Daniel Bryan getting brainwashed or Daniel Bryan destroying the Wyatt’s from the inside. I for one hope that he doesn’t do to much damage to the structure of the Wyatt Family if it is indeed an infiltration story. Bray and company such a unique look and attitude and can feud with almost anyone.

Each week I filter through all the self promotion, Q and A’s, retweets, and TV references to bring you the best of Twitter in the Sports Entertainment world.

This week was tough to go through because Kurt Angle was retweeting and replying to everyone who mentioned him in the WWE. Jeez Kurt, just go back. It’s nice of the Bellas to keep kayfabe alive, and nice of Brooke to provide me with another nice picture for the roundup. Your move, Angelina Love.

And finally, the top comment from last week’s column came from the user Team J-Rod. In reference to my thoughts on Jeff Jarrett being under appreciated in the wrestling business: No, I think a ton of people hate on Jarrett because he was worse than Flair, Rhodes, or HHH ever was when it came to keeping himself at the top of the card.

Very true. He kept himself at the top of TNA for a long time, longer than he should have, but watching Jeff lose was a great thing. He would weasel his way back into the title and you would hate him again. I’ll take that any day over Kurt Angle’s absolute fucking stranglehold over TNA in 2007-2008. He never seemed to lose the title for long, he rarely lost clean, and he always had some sort of bullshit swerve to keep his title. And when he lost, he was booked like a man who lost like a man, not the chickenshit heel way that he should’ve. That’s my rant people.
