Sports Entertainment 720 News Report 01.16.14

January 16, 2014 | Posted by Jarrod Atkinson

It’s Thursday and if you’re like me that means you’ll have Impact on in the background while you do other things. Wrestling, fuck yeah! Welcome to another edition of Sports Entertainment 720, I’m your favorite independent blogger and undefeated MMA Fact or Fiction host Jarrod Atkinson. This week Dixie cleans house, a legend passes away, and Daniel Bryan finally broke away from the Wyatt Family after 2 whole weeks. Let’s do this!

Call it short term booking, call it a waste of a good storyline, call it what you want. Daniel Bryan turned on Bray Wyatt inside the confines of a steel cage on Monday and the crowd absolutely lost their shit. Was it another test to see if Bryan could stay over with the crowd? Were they killing time until the Royal Rumble? I don’t know what the hell happened, but it gave us this moment. And he did it all with a concussion.

After a week in hospice care WWE Hall of Fame member Mae Young passed away. As I mentioned last week, Young had wrestled since the dawn of time, but was known for her hell raising bad ass old lady character that she played for the last 15 years. How can we ever forget her taking a powerbomb through a table, her relationship with Mark Henry, or calling Laycool a bunch of sluts? Mae was a hell of a woman and will be missed by wrestling fans all over the world. WWE produced this tribute video in her memory.

Remember a few weeks ago when Hulk Hogan was suppose to team with Cena to have a match with someone at Wrestlemania? Well now the rumors (we love the rumors) are that the WWE may induct the Wrestlemania I main event match into the Hall of Fame to give Hogan and Rowdy Roddy Piper a reason to make an appearance. This will surely change 6 times by next week, but damn if we don’t want find a way for Hulk Hogan to show up in New Orleans.

Get ready for the return of the Animal this Monday. Batista will make his return to WWE programming to hype his upcoming appearance in the Royal Rumble match. So expect him to powerbomb the shit out of Alberto Del Rio and vow to win the Rumble. But do we need Batista (1-0 MMA) to win the Rumble? I never liked Batista as champion except for his last run on the way out. I don’t know where this is going, but I hope that WWE has a solid Wrestlemania lineup planned. Batista and Chris Jericho really need that big paycheck.

What the fuck happened on Impact last week? AJ Styles vs the world ended with Magnus defeating Styles for the undisputed TNA Championship. Word is that the reason for this ending was to give Magnus and Dixie nuclear heat moving forward. Wouldn’t it have been better for AJ and Magnus to go 30 hard minutes and have AJ get screwed than to have the whole heel roster kick his ass? So AJ is officially done with TNA and will be appearing on ROH television at the end of the month. And now we have Magnus as champion. Let’s see what tonight has in store for us.

This week is the start of a two week period that TNA is referring to as Genesis. Live and free on Spike. Here are the matches on the card: Sting vs. Ethan Carter III, Kurt Angle vs. Bobby Roode in a cage match, Bully Ray vs Mr. Anderson, Gail Kim vs. Madison Rayne for the Knockouts title and “Cowboy” James Storm vs. Gunner in a briefcase match. Mr Intensity. I’m sure we’ll all be rooting for him.

In “Wait, were they still on the roster?” news TNA released Wes Brisco and Jay Bradley this week. So two spots cleared up and the cryptic tweets from Dixie begin about some debuts this Thursday. The tweet is in the Twitter Roundup below. With these continuing cuts, I wonder if Shark Boy went back to the pizza joint?

Each week I filter through all the self promotion, Q and A’s, retweets, and TV references to bring you the best of Twitter in the Sports Entertainment world.
