Column of Dishonor 8.12.06
Posted by Larry Csonka on 08.12.2006

WELCOME…

Yes, your personal hell is here…I am in control of the Column of Honor Dishonor! Ari is off for the week because he owed me one. I promised to talk to Gabe about keeping Survival of the Fittest; I went to the ROH offices, had a sit down with Gabe; we discussed it over a Sangwich with some chips and a Crystal Light and he saw my way about it and decided to keep it. You're welcome ROH fans. All I asked in return from Ari is for him to allow me to do a fill in column when he needed one. Good news for me, he needed one and here we go! Ari will be back soon enough, but for now…lets get on with this week's Column of Dishonor!

ROH Results: 8/05 Edison New Jersey

Matches
  • 1. Derrick Dempsey defeats Pelle Primeau via submission.
  • 2. Colt Cabana defeats Sal Rinauro via submission.
  • 3. Top Of The Class Trophy: Shane Hagadorn defeats Bobby Dempsey via submission.
  • 4. Nigel McGuinness wins Four Corner Survival. Nigel pins Claudio Castagnoli after a lariat in a match also featuring Jay Lethal and Christopher Daniels.
  • 5. ROH World Tag Team Championships - Ultimate Endurance - Austin Aries & Roderick Strong defeat Matt Sydal & Jack Evans
    - Irish Airborne eliminates Jay & Mark Briscoe
    - Roderick Strong eliminates Dave & Jake Crist when Dave taps to the stronghold.
    - Austin Aries pins Matt Sydal after a 450 Splash to retain the titles.
  • 6. BJ Whitmer & Homicide defeat Steve Corino & Adam Pearce via disqualification.
  • 7. KENTA defeats Davey Richards via the Go 2 Sleep
  • 8. ROH World Championship: Samoa Joe vs. Bryan Danielson ends in a 60-Minute Time Limit Draw

Angles and Issues or Some Such Shit

1: This was basically your pre-show type match from what I have been told. I don't know much about either guy, so we'll move on.

2: Cabana wins, why? Because he is better then you and me put together; that's why.

3: Hagadorn apparently won in 3 seconds after a quick brass knuckle shot and crossface submission. I like this kid already.

4: Nigel keeps on rolling as he heads into the UK. He has held the Pure Title almost one year and has been dominant in regards to his run. Defeating Claudio, Lethal and Daniels is huge heading into the match up with Danielson.

5: Ultimate Endurance sounded like a ton of fun. They went the unexpected route having Irish Airborne eliminate the Briscoe's first. This helped lead to a match of former Generation Next members as Strong and Aries had to battle Evans and Sydal. The tag champs came out on top, but were still angry as to who stole their tag title belts. Damn thieves at Indy show, I tell ya.

6: CORINO IS BACK IN ROH! ICHIBAN! I am so torn though; Corino and Homicide are back at each other's throats! How am I to decide on who I give my allegiance to? Granted I love Cornette, and he is against Homicide with Pearce who is a great old school heel. And we know I am all about old school. I think I nee d to talk to Gabe again; maybe we can weave some crazy angle where Corino and Homicide become friends and go PEE on people.

7: KENTA wins and all is right in the world. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against young Davey Richards. By all accounts this was a hot match and Richards has been on fire leading up to and during his ROH run thus far. I just feel that the right man won here. Don't worry, we haven't heard the last of young Davey Richards as he has tremendous up side.

    8: Joe…Danielson…60-minutes…DROOL! Yeah, that's all I have to say.

BIG NEWS: On September 16th, Samoa Joe and Homicide will put aside their differences and join forces to battle the Briscoe's. This should be all kinds of greatness, and Joe and Homicide together will tear some shit up!

    ROH Call
ROH Champions—As of 8/12/2006 (after 8/5 in Edison, New Jersey)

ROH World Champion—American Dragon Bryan Danielson (champion since 9/17/05, 25 successful defenses)*, **
ROH PURE Champion—Nigel McGuinness (champion since 8/29/05, 16 successful defenses)*
ROH World Tag Team Champions—Austin Aries and Roderick Strong (champions since 12/17/05, 13 successful defenses) ***

*4/29/06 champion v. champion match results in no title change and therefore should be considered successful defenses of the respective titles.
**Dragon makes successful defense of ROH title at ETW promotion in Texas on 6/10/06.
***Aries and Strong make two successful defenses in Japan, thus turning the ROH tag team titles into WORLD tag team titles.

    ROH News (via the ROHnewswire…

ROH News: The WON says that ROH is high on Morishima and they are working to get him a working Visa, with the goal to build to a Morishima v. Joe match sometime in 2007.

My Views: From what I understand the goal is to have him do a similar deal as KENTA, and have hem be a semi-regular special attraction. I have been getting some DVD's with some recent Morishima and the guy is rather awesome. His biggest gift, besides great size and athletic ability, is that he can work with anyone of any size and it works. He can sell for the smaller guys and make it look believable, not silly. That is important and he does it well. Bringing in Morishima to face some of the roster and build it up to a huge match with Joe sounds kick ass to me. **Automatic DVD Purchase.** I personally love the influx of Japanese talent in ROH, just great stuff.

ROH News: In shocking news a press conference was held with ROH World Champion Bryan Danielson and ROH Pure Champion Nigel McGuinness that will air this week in the new ROH Video Recap at ROHvideos.com. We have learned that the Liverpool main event between Danielson and McGuinness will be a title unification match. You are guaranteed to see the first title change of 2006 in Liverpool. The match will be contested under Pure Title rules meaning the rope break rules will be in effect and the Pure Title can change hands by DQ or countout. However, now the ROH World Title can also change hands by DQ or countout. In the event of a double DQ or double countout the match will be restarted. History will be made in Liverpool as the ROH World and Pure Titles will be unified as the classic series between Danielson and England's own McGuinness will continue.

My Views: The Pure title had a rough start as AJ Styles initially won it in the first incarnation, but after the PEDO (~!) scandal and the TNA guys being pulled from ROH, he had to relinquish the title. Now after all of the troubles, with careful booking and all they have made it a rather strong title. I think that they made the mistake though of pigeon holing themselves with a "stylistic" belt. With having to change rules and all, they may have had to hard a time booking the right people. Hopefully they take their time and work towards bringing another secondary title in, North American or some such title, and start to establish that. More below as I look at the August 12th show.

ROH News: The main event for the big St. Paul return on 8/25 has been announced. It will be a rematch of the huge title unification match in England as Bryan Danielson will take on Nigel McGuinness as the hottest wrestling rivalry of the year continues. Whoever wins in Liverpool will be defending the belt in St. Paul. There will be additional stipulations to the match that we will announce next week.

My Views: Rivalry of the Year? Possibly. I think that we have to decide that in December though, but it is up there in ROH for sure. I will be interested to see

ROH News: "Glory By Honor V" weekend is beginning to take shape with major matches being announced. It will be a huge weekend for The Briscoes as KENTA is also looking for revenge on them. KENTA will bring his regular NOAH tag team partner Naomichi Marufuji to "Glory By Honor V" weekend. 9/15 in East Windsor, CT will have a dream match as KENTA & Marufuji face Jay & Mark Briscoe!!! If The Briscoes win the ROH World Tag Titles this Saturday in Liverpool then the belts will be on the line!!!

    My Views: Marufuji BITCHES!

    Dear Briscoes,

    Your punk asses are finished,

    Love,
    Larry
Representative and Sponsor for KENTA and Marufuji beating your asses

ROH News: Add BJ Whitmer to "Survival Of The Fittest" on October 6th in Cleveland. The field now has Bryan Danielson, Roderick Strong, Samoa Joe and BJ Whitmer. This will be the most loaded "Survival Of The Fittest" yet. The rematch of the century has been signed as ROH World Champion Bryan Danielson will face Samoa Joe in a qualifying match to determine who goes to the six man elimination finals. If Danielson is still champion this will be non-title.

My Views: Bryan Danielson, Roderick Strong, Samoa Joe and BJ Whitmer are a great field already. The fact that they are doing Joe vs. Danielson in the qualifying round is bananas! I am basically sold on this show with the four guys announced, and the fact that Joe vs. Danielson is in that first round. Great stuff here, I am so glad I could save it for you.

ROH News: Steve Corino has been having regular phone conversations with ROH Commissioner Jim Cornette recently. It is a matter of when, not if, Corino will return to ROH. This will definitely mean problems for Homicide.

My Views: As I said above, this is totally awesome; but I am torn. I think I will just let Homicide and Corino battle it out and root for the survivor.

ROH News: Adam Pearce issued a warning to Homicide in the latest ROH Video Recap. It will be very interesting to see what happens when Homicide and Jim Cornette are in the same building for the first time since the whipping at Cage Of Death when both head to Chicago on 8/26. All hell is going to break loose.

My Views: Damn skippy all hell will break loose. I wonder if Pearce and Cornette will have a plan for Homicide. Beware the wrath of the racket…

    Your Mid Column Olay

    OLAY OLAY OLAY OLAY….
    OLAY, OLAY…

    **Police Sirens play…***

    Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Oh my GOD! Scott Steiner has taken out Samoa Joe! How dare that bastard show up in an ROH column!

    Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

"Don't worry, you half-breed hero will be ok. Just make a trail of Crusty Crunch donuts from here to his car and he'll make it just fine. See you in Orlando…fat bastard. Big Poppa Pump is you hook-up…holla if ya hear me!"

    Let's Look At 8.12~!

FWA British Heavyweight Title Match: Robbie Brookside Vs. Chad Collyer

I like that this match has been added to the card. It adds to the already loaded card with another title match, especially since it is UK title. I haven't seen much from Brookside, but am a Collyer fan. Should be a solid match at the least. Brookside retains.

Grudge Match: Davey Richards Vs. Jimmy Rave (with Prince Nana)

Jimmy Rave must die. Richards with another win.

Four Corner Survival Match: Colt Cabana Vs. Matt Sydal Vs. Jonny Storm Vs. Spud

Sydal is always fun to watch and has rally improved in the last year, Cabana rules the universe, Storm is a good performer but as for SPUD I know nothing about him, other than he is a small dude from the UK. If there is any justice in the world Cabana wins while yelling insults at SPUD.

ROH Tag Team Title Contenders Match: Doug Williams and Jody Fleisch Vs. SUWA and Go Shiozaki

I have liked what I have seen from Williams and Fleisch over the years, but know next to nothing about SUWA and Go. I say Doug Williams and Jody Fleisch win to challenge in their own country.

ROH Vs CZW Grudge Match: Claudio Castagnoli Vs. B J Whitmer

Claudio is pretty damn good and I have enjoyed what I have seen from him in recent months. Whitmer has come full circle, once representing Mick Foley and Hardcore vs. Steamboat and traditional wrestling and now, ROH went into their Hardcore cellar and have pulled him out for the ROH/CZW feud. He has done ROH well, including a huge win against Necro in the barbed wire match. I think he finishes out the destruction of CZW with a hard fought win over Claudio.

ROH Tag Team Title Match: Austin Aries STARR and Roderick Strong (Champions) Vs. Mark and Jay Briscoe

STARR baby! Let me put it this way, not a Briscoes fan here. Don't hate them, but don't think they rule the world either. Star and Strong run wild in the UK and move onto defeat Fleisch and Williams.

Main Event – Title Unification Match: ROH Champ Bryan Danielson Vs. ROH Pure Champ Nigel McGuiness

This is a huge match. As far as this goes, I dig the rules; they will have probably their biggest crowd ever and are guaranteeing a title change for that show. What more can you ask for, other than Joe eating them both and taking the titles that is. It should be an outstanding match, and since it will be the first ROH title change of the year, it is huge news. I expect great things and will go with Danielson here.

Larry's Top 10 Things NOT to like about ROH!
Oh come on, you knew it was coming!

    10. Jimmy Bower: Hiring a guy with split personalities to do commentary may not have been the smartest thing to do.

    9. The Message Board: Any board that praises Keith's review of Joe vs. Kobashi over mine gets no praise.

    8. Not Enough Jeff Hardy: Obviously ROH missed the boat on the Charismatic Enigma. I mean, think back to his ROH debut. He helped sell out the place, the crowd was way into him, the boys all wanted to work with him. It was a match made in heaven. Jeff Hardy could have been the greatest ROH champion ever. If there was ever a time to use the phrase, "BOOK IT GABE" this would have been it. Talk about missed opportunities.

    7. They gave CM Punk his big break: My theory in life is this: "Never trust a guy that won't break bread and share a beer with you." That's why I don't trust Meehan, that and he smells like cabbage.

    6. Jimmy Rave matches: Do I really have to explain this one?

    5. Not Enough Steve Corino: Sure he stores gravity in his ass, but Steve Corino is a king of old school and should be ruling over ROH with Claudio and Chris Hero. Oh man, if we could get Booker T you would have a 4-Horsemen like Kings of Wrestling in ROH. That would be greatness!

    4. Homicide is not champion: Why is this man not champion? I think it is a racial thing. Is it because he almost pee'd on CM Punk and is "down wit da hoodlums?" Konnan is right, the white man is holding LAX down. FIGHT THE POWER!

    3. No Best of Alex Shelley DVD or T-Shirts: Truly depressing. Alex Shelley may in fact be the greatest human on the planet. Hell, he has talent on loan from God! Yet the man can't get a T-Shirt or DVD? Thank goodness for TNA. PAPARAZZI 4 LIFE~!

    2. The Pure Title: What is all of this wrestling shit? No one wants to see two guys in panties rolling around applying "holds" to each other. Does this company have no idea how to do quality Sportz Entertainment?

    1. Not Enough Necro Butcher: The Necro Butcher should be in Ring of Honor for several reasons. First, he is quite possibly the greatest babyface of all time. He was such a great babyface that he never had to turn heel to keep himself fresh with the wrestling fans. One time he wanted to turn heel but Rob Feinstein refused to let him, because The Necro Butcher "could go out to the ring and chop Shark Boy's arms off with a chainsaw, and nobody would believe him as a heel". The Necro Butcher was so likeable that indeed, it was impossible to see him as a bad guy. In addition to that, The Necro Butcher was also one of the greatest in-ring competitors of all time. He was BJ Whitmer's greatest opponent, and countless other wrestlers would tell you that they had their best matches with The Necro Butcher. He brought out the best in everybody that he ever faced in the ring, and was responsible for many of the greatest in-ring moments in a decade that saw professional wrestling begin to make the transition to sports-entertainment. While men like Samoa Joe, AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson provide the hook for the "smark" fan base, men like The Necro Butcher kept the legitimacy of professional wrestling alive for those of us who would always be fans of wrestling.

    **The Independent Buy In**
Support independent pro wrestling, ROH or non-ROH, I don't care. But if you out there are spending so much time complaining about how WWE sucks, then dammit, spend some money so you won't have to spend so much time complaining. This list stays in the column and will be added to as the year goes on. Remember: don't bow out, BUY IN! You hear me fuckers! Buy some Independent wrestling or Ari and I will come to your house, and he will make you be a Jew; and we all know you don't want that! And I will make you sing praise and worship songs to bad guitar playing! BUY SHIT DAMNIT!
