The Triple Threat 8.13.06: The 15th Edition
Posted by Sean, David, Alex on 08.13.2006
Well while Alex is getting ready to go to the Impact Zone, we thought we'd release the 15th edition of the column. This week we talk about that old study that Vince hated so much. We also delve into the Diva Search, Senshi, and other things. Also don't miss the return of the Fun Topic of the Week.
Hello everyone, it is another week in wrestling and another week filled with lots of news. The summertime is also winding down and school is starting once again for the young tikes. We start back to college in two weeks ourselves so it will be our time to get back to class soon. Alex is in Orlando right now, he's been enjoying three days of Walt Disney World, and tonight Alex will be at TNA Hard Justice live so look for him. Check our Myspace for a picture of Alex. This week we talk about that study that Vince shot down. We also discuss CM Punk, Hulk Hogan, and Senshi. If you want to know more then you are welcome to read this the 15th edition of the "Triple Threat."
Topic #1 This week the Wake Forest School of Medicine released the results of some 1999 study where they said people that watch wrestling were more likely to hit their partners on a date, and that overall they would be more likely to be involved in violent acts. Vince had a response to this where he said:
"We regret that this seven year old junk science was re-issued. It was junk science then, and is junk science now. It took them seven years to get someone to actually read it and it hasn't even been subjected to a peer review. There is nothing new in the study, and we think it is recycled garbage put forward by some obscure professor who finally got someone to read his paper and is trying to get his name in the media."
So what do you think about all this? Is the study right? And should Vince have made such comments?
Alex: Well it shouldn't take a scientist to determine the fact that those that watch wrestling could have more violent behavior than those who don't watch wrestling. However, I do think that person has to have volatile tendencies. I don't think Vince really has any right to say what he said, however, Vince hates anyone who goes against him, even if they are the ones who are right.
David: Of course its right. I've hit every girl I ever dated because of wrestling; I even hit my mom when she talks back. BAM! Open hand slap! Ok, no I have never done any of that stuff, EVER. I think this study is full of crap and anything that's from 1999 probably doesn't pertain to the present day. Csonka had a good comment about this in his "Your news, my views" column that pretty much sums up everything so everyone should read it. I also think it's pretty stupid that Vince had to lash back at the so called research. He really has no point, its not going to hurt anything and people will most likely not even care about this study anyways. Just leave it be, Vince, this stuff will blow over and be forgotten within the week.
Sean: First let me say that Vince probably should have handled this a little differently. Of course, Vince has never cared what people think of him or his company, so that's probably why he reacted like a little kid. He was a little pissed about Hogan's antics so he took it out on this instead. I still don't think you need to attack the guy that did the study because that's just silly. You can attack the study and call it garbage if you want, but there is no need to get extreme here. Yes this is an old study that has little relevance to anything that happens now. However, the guy is just reporting his facts and he could have been left alone. I do agree with Vince's comments in that it is a silly study. They have done these studies so many times it is ridiculous and guess what? They always find the same thing. "That supposedly watching wrestling is going to cause the viewer to commit violent acts." Really this is the same crap that they keep pulling on video games as well. Yes, kids are going to imitate what they see on television because it is only natural. I am sure most of us have done a little backyard wrestling in our time, and some of that inspires people like me, to give it a go in the wrestling ring. Like I said before, my dad made me pull out about three months after I finished training due to him saying that college was more important. Hey, He's the one that provides all my money, so I really didn't have much of an option. It was quit or get disowned. Ok back to the point. There is no doubt that some of the backyard stuff gets out of hand and people start thinking that they are invincible by having hardcore matches on mattresses. However, I think we have to put that aside, because that is a byproduct of watching wrestling and it has been around for a long time. Mick Foley may never have been discovered if it wasn't for that leap off his roof. The bigger point is that watching wrestling or playing video games does not lead to guys hitting girls on dates or bigger types of violence. If anything we could point at movies and other televisions shows that do the same thing, but oh no, we can't point the finger there because those are things that common society watches. You know if parents would actually take the time to teach their children that what they see on their weekly wrestling show should not be done to other people in the real world, maybe a lot of this "dating violence" wouldn't happen. Also I should state that, just telling your kids the show is fake doesn't solve anything. Those wrestlers do get hurt in the ring and you need to stress that doing those moves to other people in a fight, or just rough-housing, can result in a serious injury. However, wrestling itself does not make you a more violent person. It is the person's own conscience that decides they should go hit a woman. Not because Triple H may have hit Stephanie McMahon on a television show. Wrestling may not have many positive effects on people, but just watching it doesn't make you violent.
Topic #2 Well Hulk Hogan has made the rounds lately with his "injury" that he tore his meniscus getting up from his couch. Then speculation began by Vince and others that he could be faking an injury just to get out of the match. However, Hogan has said that he's a go for the match-up. So do you think he was faking, or was this real?
Alex: Depends, if they wanted Orton to go over, WHICH HE SHOULD, then Hogan was probably faking. If he wasn't, it is just proves how old he is and how he should be nowhere near the wrestling industry today. Your time has past Hulk, get over it. What does this mean now? Hogan may go over Orton at Summerslam, which would be a travesty.
David: From what I've been reading, Hogan probably faked it to get out of a drug test for steroids. I've also noticed that many people on this website think that he is a genius for doing it. I really was hoping he was injured so that I didn't have to see this crappy match at Summerslam. I guess it won't be too bad as long as Randy Orton kicks his ass, and he better. This guy is too old, why is he still on my screen? With stuff like this happening on RAW, no wonder why I have more fun watching ECW and SmackDown.
Sean: Well they apparently did wellness testing on Monday and Hogan probably knew that, so he could have faked the injury to get out of testing. However, I don't know if he even had to take the tests since he is a part-time wrestler. He could have also done it, to get some more money out of Vince if he agreed to job to Orton. I did speak with a doctor on this subject, that's right I do my homework for these columns. Anyway, he told me that at Hogan's age, he could very well tear his meniscus doing something as easy as getting up from a couch. Most athletes keep playing through these types of injuries because if it's not too severe the cartilage can heal itself. Unless Hogan's knee starts locking up and begins to really limit his motion before Sunday, Hogan should be fine to at least show up at the PPV and wrestle his limited style. It is really irrelevant whether he faked it or not because he said he would be at the show. If Hogan jobs to Orton then this little episode will be forgotten, if he doesn't, then you can put another note on Hogan's ego.
Topic #3 Now that CM Punk has made his debut, should he be wrestling every week?
Alex: I actually think they are booking Punk very well at this point, making him seem like a big deal, which he is. He's "kind of a big deal" (insert Ron Burgundy's voice here). At this point having him wrestle every other week or so, will build more anticipation and give fans something to look to in the future.
David: HELL YEAH! I love this guy and seriously, what's better then seeing him wrestle every night? CM Punk is the man and the future of wrestling. Punk is in the elite group of superstars that are going to be gracing our television screens for years to come. I was watching ECW this week just waiting to see him wrestle, and all I got was a promo. Damn ECW for only being one hour long! We can only hope that next week we get another CM Punk match and hopefully it will have good crowd reaction. Man, just writing this comment makes me want some Pepsi.
Sean: I talked about this a little bit in the 3R's on ECW, here's what I said in case you didn't read it "I know a lot of people probably would have put this in the wrong. However, I think it is not a bad thing to make people wait because it builds anticipation and makes people want to watch the show next week. The bad thing that does happen is that you let down the crowd in the arena. There were quite a few CM Punk signs in that arena and many were upset that he didn't wrestle that night. Remember this sort of ties in with that discipline thing he talked about in one of his promos so it makes a little sense. At least they had him cut a promo saying that next week he would be wrestling on the show. They can't keep doing this though because that ratings drop might start happening more frequently, due to people wanting to see Punk." There are a lot of people that don't like the new ECW, but they do like CM Punk and will watch just to see him wrestle. As I stated earlier, anticipation is good as long as they just have him wrestle random guys. After a while though, that is going to get old and he needs to be put into a storyline. Once he's in a storyline I think he does need to at least do more than cut a promo every week. Also once in a while, it is nice to make the crowd in the arena happy at the sacrifice of your television viewers, so you could at least have him wrestle a dark match after the show.
Topic #4 Do you think the Diva Search accomplishes anything for WWE?
Alex: No not at all.
David: No it doesn't do anything and I hate the Diva search, but at least we got Maria out of it.
Sean: Well it does accomplish one thing, it gives creative a twenty minute break. The crap they did on SmackDown made me feel like it had ripped minutes of my life away that I'll never get back. See the problem is that there seems to be no point to winning because they sign half of the contestants anyway. Unless you do playboy, then Vince might think, about keeping you after the obligatory one year contract is done, of course that doesn't mean you'll stay there as Christy did playboy and was still fired. The worst part is that she seemed in tune with learning how to wrestle. Maria (not to mention she's funny in character), Krystal, Candice are all beautiful models and Ashley has a good personality to her. Michelle McCool is just being turned into a Stacy Keibler rip-off, but at least she's doing something. The issue is that they serve no purpose other than being eye candy, and not all of them are going to be managers, because let's face it, WWE still hasn't shown a big importance for tag teams. Being eye candy is great for them and young adolescents, but it does nothing for others that are watching. The segments they do on television really don't prove anything to the fans that they really want to be in WWE. If we could come up with some more relevant segments that could involve wrestling maybe it wouldn't be so bad. What does musical chairs have to do with wrestling? It's those kinds of things that make you hate the diva search. It mostly feels like WWE has nothing to do in the summer so they want a segment that will take up a part of the show with some tits and ass.
Fun Topic of the Week: Well we know how important it is to have
something to strive for in wrestling. Do you think ECW needs a second title
for all those mid-carders that aren't in the main event?
Explanation: This question may not necessarily be something that is going on in the wrestling news, but it is what it describes. The fun topic is there to get everyone thinking about how they would answer the question. Basically your own personal brain teaser where you can answer it however you wish. This is what we had to say about this week's fun topic.
Alex: Well looking back, the ECW TV title which was supposed to be like the mid-card title, at one point became bigger than the World title. So if history were to repeat itself things could get interesting for ECW. For the time being with a one hour time slot, one belt is alright.
David: Eventually, Right now ECW is still trying to develop characters and storylines so to throw in a mid-card title at this point in time would kind of be useless. The perfect time to bring in a mid-card title would be at their first ECW brand PPV. By that time, they will have a bigger roster to mess around with and it would give more people interest in watching the PPV. It will be interesting to see who gets the title first and where ECW goes with it. I'm guessing that it's going to be the Television Title. Right now, there are plenty of possible candidates for this title, such as, CM Punk, Rene Dupree, Balls, Test, Knox, Shannon Moore, Kevin Thorne, and a few others. CM Punk with the TV title, now that is cool.
Sean: I have to agree with David that right now it probably wouldn't do much for the show. When they get two hours, yes I said when, because really it is only a matter of time until they get that 2nd hour. Then you could make a case for it because a secondary title would help give the mid-card something to strive for, while WWE attempts to make new stars and build around ECW. The roster is kind of thin at this point and possibly around the time of their first PPV they might have a more beefed up roster. Dupree and Moore haven't even debuted in the ring yet, as far as ECW television goes anyway. Balls, CM Punk, and the four guys involved in a storyline are the only people ECW has right now. For sure though they do need a second title and I would be welcome to seeing the return of the ECW television title.
Topic #6 Senshi has had some issues with TNA recently about his contract and the way he's been booked. It looks like some things have been smoothed out but this week's PPV could bring out some details to whether or not something has been solved. Do you think a deal will get done and Senshi gets to keep the title, or will he lose it and continue with his problems with TNA?
Alex: Senshi has some what of a history of not doing business well. If you want some proof, look back at how his ROH run ended. For TNA's sake, I hope they can work this problem out because the X-Division could really use Senshi as their champ right now.
David: I really don't know too much about this situation. For the most part, hopefully TNA can get everything worked out and they can be able to keep Senshi. Hes a great talent to have and is always interesting to watch. This is more like something we have to wait and see because to tell you the truth, who knows what will happen until after the PPV.
Sean: I think this is more about Senshi getting mad about the last PPV than anything. Senshi apparently didn't like that he had to check the internet to find out he had a match at Victory Road. I don't blame him because you know TNA could at least call him to let him know, or at least they could do a rundown of the matches the show before the PPV. Senshi also has not been on television and that could be a reason why he's having issues with management. However, I don't really see this going off the deep end, because TNA really has nothing to fear here. WWE doesn't want Senshi and the worst thing he could do is go back to ROH, where he could be lured back by TNA. I think they will eventually come to a compromise sooner or later. I just hope it is soon because I want Senshi on my television more.
Topic #7 There is a change that could be happening in the developmental program. Simon Dean could be the new head of developmental, where he would go to different places and scout talent. Dreamer says he wants to focus on being a wrestler for ECW. Dean would be working right under Johnny Ace. What do you think of this move?
Alex: Good because Dreamer could focus more on what he needs to right now. Nova is a great wrestler and would make a good substitute.
David: I guess there would be nothing wrong with it because Dreamer actually said he wanted to focus on wrestling. Simon Dean also seems like a logical pick to take his spot since he has done a lot of work with OVW. He's not a bad choice in my eyes and at least he won't be jobbing anymore.
Sean: You know what would be better if Simon Dean was placed ahead of Johnny Ace and then after like two months on the job, he fired Johnny Ace. Sadly, that's not going to happen but still, I can dream can't I? Ok back to the point of the question, this is a good move because Tommy Dreamer doesn't need all the extra stress. I mean it is hard enough to be a wrestler but to also have to deal with the developmental talent too? That is a lot of burden on one person. Simon Dean has worked with many of the people down there in OVW and this gives him a chance to stop being a jobber. Hey maybe he could bring us some really good talent, you never know.
Topic #8 TNA does have a PPV this week. Actually, Alex is going to Orlando to see it. Hard Justice will be on this Sunday, what do you think of the card?
Alex: This card actually shaped up nicely, and I am very excited about going to it. Expect the tag match to once again steal the show, with those four in the same match, it has to be good. Also Sting vs. Jarrett has the big match feel going in, but don't expect a Flair-Steamboat quality match. Expect some great X-Division action in the three-way bout for the title, and some smash mouth, strong style action in the falls count anywhere match.
David: I hate you Alex! Because you get the chance to actually go to the show, this card looks solid to me. The Rhino vs. Joe vs. Monty Brown is going to be intense and I hope i get to watch it sooner then later. Kevin Nash vs. Sabin is also one of those matching that I would be excited seeing. I wish I could actually watch TNA but it's on a horrible night for me because I work every Thurs. night so if I'm not up with par on the storylines its not my fault. Everything else looks solid on the card and it looks like its going to be a pretty good PPV. Hope you have fun Alex.
Sean: Hey Alex have fun man, unlike David, I don't hate you, it is good for everyone to take a trip every now and then. Well even though I can't stand that Jarrett is in the main event, we could see a big swerve here and still get the end result at Bound for Glory. That's right I'm saying it, Sting could win here. They have one more PPV before Bound for Glory and Jarrett could win the title back there. Then Christian could still turn on Sting, cost him the title, and turn heel. Regardless, some of the card looks rather good. Joe vs. Rhino vs. Monty should be a pretty entertaining match-up. Again, they have one more PPV to go, so I could see them doing some weird ending in this one too. We know Eric Young and Abyss are going to win their matches, but what about the X-Division contest? They smartly made this a 3-Way because at least there is a chance Senshi could lose the title now. I expect this one to be really good especially the stuff with Lethal and Senshi. I mean I don't know what to expect from Petey anymore because they treat him like a one move wonder. Both tag team matches should be rather good too. The Newly Franchised Naturals should get the nod over their rivals, some jobbers, and the oldies in the James Gang. Man that tag title match could be MOTN people. LAX has a chance to swerve everyone and win the titles so it should be interesting to see what happens. Looks like another good show from TNA.
Match of the Week Nominees: EDGE & Lita vs. Carlito & Trish (RAW), #1 Contenders match for ECW Championship: Sabu vs. Kurt Angle (ECW), Christian vs. Scott Steiner (TNA Impact), Ken Kennedy vs. Rey Mysterio, Batista & Bobby Lashley vs. Finlay & William Regal (SmackDown).
Explanation: Match of the Week is where we honor those companies that have enough money to get themselves a national television deal. We list the ones that we thought were the best from the three shows and then pick our favorite. We may include a Heat match if it was really good but most of the time it will just be from RAW, SmackDown, ECW and TNA Impact. PPV's don't count because we always give out our match of the night when we give our thoughts on them. Also we only add an indy match if we went to the show. So here are our picks for Match of the Week.
Sean: Sabu vs. Kurt Angle
David: Ken Kennedy vs. Rey Mysterio
Alex: I have seen no wrestling this week, so I can't comment.

There is one thing that comes out on Saturday's, and that is Gaming Trends A Column where Vincent Chiucchi talks about trends that have developed in gaming. This week its all about those grown up characters.
Now Time for Feedback
First we have John Bryant Bateman He gives us a dream match and has a good question for us.
I'm Back so dun worry. I came here to give you guys another Dream match mainly because I know People would kill to see this. How about a Ladder match between the Hardyz & the Naturals. Just an idea. Now I wanna know what you boys think about whethe or not TNA NEEDS a new #1 Heel to run the show. If so who do you think it should be and why and if not well just tell us why so we can set up your psychatric appointment.
Sean: That match would probably be pretty good. I have a feeling having the masters of the Ladders in there would really help make this a must-see match. I'd have to go with the Hardyz because they are the experienced ones. Well besides Steiner and Jarrett there really isn't any true heels in TNA. I actually think Monty Brown is on his way to making himself a true heel. If he keeps doing well on the mic and taking out the right people I think we could see that TNA crowd turn on him.
David: It would be a good match but I would have to go for the Hardy Boyz, hands down. TNA does need another true heel and to be honest, that person could easily be Christian. He has tons and tons of experience being a heel so this guy could definitely take the ball and run with it. I never really liked him as a face anyway.
Next Tiffany is back with a vengeance to talk about various things.
Hey guys, I'm back!
Well good job once again on the article. I thought the ECW show this past Tuesday kinda sucked in general. The only cool thing that really happened was the CM Punk debut. I'm sure he can still be the crowd favorite by his talent. Yeah, I don't understand why the Batista vs. Big Show match was a regular match, I mean, if it's like Kurt
Angle vs. CM Punk or something, a regular match sounds good. But those two
can't really pull off a regular match together. It just doesn't work. I'm praying that Jeff Hardy will not screw up. He's been known to screw up in a lot of ways with the wrestling business. But it will be cool to see the Hardyz back together. There's like no tag team division whatsoever. I kept on forgetting who's the tag team champions, which is not good. So I'm sure it will be big if the Hardys are together again. An hour of wrestling is not enough to show a lot of talent and good matches. So I hope that ECW or TNA gets another hour. One hour is seriously not long enough for wrestling. Esp. since there are commercials which adds less time to the shows (ECW, TNA). I think it makes the shows not as good if it's cut to an hour. Finlay rules! I wouldn't care what he is. Face or Heel. He will always be one of my favorites. Ok, hope u guys are having a great summer!
David: I actually didn't get to watch last week's ECW show because of work. Batista and Big Show in the same sentence sounds bad. I have high hopes that SmackDown's tag team division will grow in the near future. We got the Hardyz, London and Kendrick, the OVW guys, and the Pitbulls when the return so we might just have something here. I also agree with you that ECW and TNA both need one more hour to truly make them a better wrestling show in general. Finlay is awesome, like I've said in the past I could watch a Finlay vs. Lashley match forever. Thanks for writing I always enjoy your comments.
Sean: Well see the crowd made the show for me and it really made it stand out. The hardcore match was pretty fun and of course Punk's debut made the show even better. The main event sucked but the crowd made it memorable in its own right. Well we know that Jeff is now going back to RAW but I hope he doesn't screw himself up either. He could really help that mid-card and he could have some good matches with Carlito, Haas, Shelton, and Nitro. Yeah those TV shows really need two hours to make them better. I've said this before, but Finlay just kicks ass. Thanks for writing to us.
Finally, Chase McDonald Agrees for my pick for Match of the Week, but he questions not adding another match.
Sean, Great choice for match for the week, but I would have loved to see Hugh Rogue vs. Ian Rotten as an option because I know that you see hardcore wrestling as real wrestling, right? lol.
Sean: Well the reason I didn't add them as an option is because I don't like all types of hardcore wrestling. The matches where they walk around and just hit each other with stuff doesn't involve much wrestling therefore it is just a show of personal intestinal fortitude, not really wrestling. It kinda bored me personally so that's why I didn't include it in the nominees section.
Well that's all for this week folks. We would sure like to know what your opinions are on these topics. Hopefully, the upcoming week in wrestling gives us plenty to talk about with Summerslam approaching. Your lesson for this week is that you should go to a TNA show like Alex, it's a bunch of fun. Well be sure to check back next week for Alex's report from Hard Justice. Until then, Crazy Sean is out everyone. Thanks for reading, bye from David. Peace Out, Oh yeah TNA! See ya from Alex. We'd like to send our best wishes to Pat Patterson who is recovering from heart surgery. We hope he comes back to the WWE soon. Later Triple Threaters.
