The Triple Threat 2.18.07: The 38th Edition
Posted by Sean, David, Alex on 02.18.2007
We talk about TNA's last PPV, whether WSX is over already, TNA getting a Women's division and more. We also continue are look at Wrestlemania moments.
Hello everyone, as we inch ever closer to Wrestlemania, the WWE has one more stop tonight with No Way Out. We preview that PPV, as well as talk about the TNA PPV that happened last Sunday. Could WSX be over before it gets started? And we continue to look at Wrestlemania moments. All on another edition of the Triple Threat.
Topic #1 TNA's Against All Odds PPV was last weekend. What did you think of the show?
David Martell: It didn't look to be one of TNA's better PPVs. They had to many gimmick matches for my taste and from what I have heard from friends who watched it that it was kind of boring. I didn't see the PPV but it would be a good idea to look at Csonka's 3 R's on Against All Odds or read Alex's comments on the show.
Alex Mattis: Weak at best, one of the worst TNA PPV's I have ever seen. It rivals Destination X 2005. That being said, there were some good things on this card, namely Sting Vs. Abyss and Christian Cage Vs. Kurt Angle. I was really surprised with how well Sting-Abyss turned out. Austin Starr Vs. Senshi was decent but should have been so much better, they may have just had an off night. Four gimmick matches? Come on Russo. I just hope we don't see much
more of this from TNA, but unfortunately I don't think we have a choice.
Sean Garmer: I didn't see the PPV and I don't watch TNA so it probably wouldn't be right for me to comment on this.
Topic #2 No titles changed hands on the PPV. Do you feel there should have been any changes?
David Martell: I'm just fine with none of the titles changing because all the champs look good in my eyes. I really didn't want Angle winning so I was very happy with the results. It's good that Chris Sabin kept the X-Title as well.
Alex Mattis: I think this was the right thing. For one, Sabin is doing a decent job of being a heel X-Division champ. CC has only had the belt for a month, and with his stable coming together it would have made no sense for him to lose the strap.
Sean Garmer: This was the right choice for TNA. They didn't really have much of an option with Chris Sabin because at this point, Jerry Lynn is too old to be holding the X-Title. Chris Sabin has surprised with how well he's done in his role as a bad guy as of late. Hopefully, soon he wrestles some talent that could be in contention for the title. I'm happy that they haven't done the dumb thing and given the title to Angle, so they can let the TNA roster have their time to shine. Christian vs. Samoa Joe next month should be interesting.
Topic #3 Wrestling Society X had their last show pulled off the air due to a fireball storyline done on the show. The more pressing concern is that the show's ratings have consistently gone down every week since the first episode. Their Myspace page says that the show isn't done, but do you think they are going to last much longer?
David Martell: I doubt they are going to last. First of all, it is competing against WWE programming and even though it is ECW it can still take a decent amount of views from the show. The show is way too over the top and I don't think it goes over well with today's wrestling viewers. We would rather have something that seems real than something that seems retarded.
Alex Mattis: So we can't see a fireball, but jackass was appropriate? Anyway, no I don't see this show lasting much longer. Which is too bad, because I do like seeing indy talent on my TV.
Sean Garmer: Apparently, MTV didn't want the fireball storyline done because it could make kids want to do that at home. When in reality they probably only did that because it was a wrestling show that they don't care about that much, but if one of their regular shows would have done that, they would have allowed it. As for WSX, well the show's creator has been fired so that might be the indicator of how much time the show has left. Ratings have been down and you know MTV really cares about that. I thought they were going to be able to catch on, but hopefully MTV has learned that it takes more than gimmicky matches to make a show. Wrestling has to be somewhat of the focus on a wrestling show, or it's just nothing.
Topic #4 Would you be interested in seeing Umaga vs. Mick Foley at Wrestlemania 23? Well it could happen or that's what the newswires are saying.
David Martell: I actually think this would be great. Umaga has shown some great showings in matches vs. John Cena. This match could help Umaga look like a legitimate monster and make people think twice about Umaga. Foley has put over people in the past such as Randy Orton and Edge so this could end up the same way for Umaga. I can only picture Umaga vs. Foley in a hardcore match, it would be intense. Lets hope things will pan out for this, I would be very excited to see this match.
Alex Mattis: With the current line-up at WrestleMania, I guess this wouldn't be that bad of a match. I don't know, I just think they could find a better role for each person.
Sean Garmer: This could work only in a hardcore match because that way the limitations of both guys would be hidden. The thing is that Mick has lost so many times throughout the years that I don't know if the fans would get behind him. Especially, because the fans don't care that much about Umaga. I think they probably could do more with both guys, but if this is what they decide on, it wouldn't be a bad idea.
Wrestlemania Moment of the Week: Up until Wrestlemania we will take the time every column to retell of a Wrestlemania moment that was cool to us.
David Martell: This one is from last year during the Money in the bank match. Everyone was at my house including Sean, Alex, and my best friend Jeremy. We were all very excited about this match mainly because we though RVD would finally get his chance to shine. Well during the match Flair got taken out of the arena because he got "injured." Everyone was like "thank God" because no one at the house wanted Flair to win. Of course Flair would come back better than ever and started to rampage through everyone. We were like "NOOOOOO anyone but him!" Then Ric Flair climbed up the latter and he touched the briefcase. Everyone in my house was marking out because the inevitable was about to happen. Then, out of the grace of God, Finlay came out with the shiileigh and knocked the crap out of Flair. We were blessed with this and everyone was happy that in the end RVD won and not Flair. That, to me, was the best part of Wrestlemania 22.
Alex Mattis: Well last week I talked about the "Money Makers" of WrestleMania. This week I was going to get into the great wrestling matches that WrestleMania has seen. The four main ones that pop into my head as "The Best Wrestling Matches" in WrestleMania history. Randy Savage Vs. Ricky Steamboat, Bret Hart Vs. Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart Vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Kurt Angle Vs. Shawn Michaels. Definitely four of the best bouts the WWE has ever put on. While these are not all of the great matches WrestleMania has given us (Angle-Benoit, Bret-Owen, etc.) these are some of the more memorable and can be put in the category of "Influential Matches" anyone who hasn't seen these matches needs to go out of their way to see them.
Sean Garmer: My moment at Wrestlemania kinda ties in with Alex's. When you think about influential and great matches at Wrestlemania there is one that Alex didn't mention. Even though it wasn't the first, it is a match that is compared with other Ladder matches. HBK vs. Razor Ramon for the IC titles is still a great match to be remembered. I don't care if it doesn't stack up with the spotfests of today it was a match with a Ladder, instead of using it as a prop to do dangerous things. The match picks up after Diesel is ejected and the Ladder starts coming into to play. When HBK does that splash off the Ladder that was a crazy moment back in the day. Razor ended up winning but this did a lot for later Ladder matches.
Topic #6 All this stuff with Christy Hemme is leading us to think that TNA has a Women's division brewing. Would that be a good thing for them right now?
David Martell: I guess this could be a good way to get women into the show but I really doubt this will affect ratings at all. Yeah, we would probably see better women's wrestling then we would see on WWE TV but right now they really don't have time to showcase the women's division on TNA. Well, maybe they can if they actually decided to do more then 6 minutes of wrestling each show. We will have to wait and see on this one.
Alex Mattis: Well the division could be alright, but the way they are building it is making it seem doomed already. But TNA has some talented women in their company. Gail Kim is a tremendous wrestler, Jackie isn't too bad either, from what I have seen Traci is alright, and it would be interesting to see if Christy has improved at all. It will just be interesting to see how this all unfolds.
Sean Garmer: You are kidding right? They have Gail Kim and that's about it. Jackie and Traci are alright; but WWE still has the time and the better wrestler's. If TNA can land Lita, Trish, or Molly then maybe, they are on to something. However, at this moment, they would be dumb to start a women's division on a one hour show. It also might just be a cheap way to get T & A on the show. Seriously, when you go by the moniker "we are wrestling" and barely have five minutes of it on your show each week, how are you going to have a women's division too? If you get two hours then maybe we can talk.
Topic # 7 WWE No Way Out is tonight. What do you think of the card?
David Martell: This PPV is no longer a Smackdown PPV this is now a filler PPV for all brands for Wrestlemania. I don't expect this to be great but some of the matches interest me. The Chris Benoit and Hardys vs. MNM and MVP could be good because, now we have Benoit in the mix. Yeah, this is a thrown together match but hey, anything with Benoit has to be good. I am really going to be pissed to when Kennedy jobs out to Lashley because this is totally the wrong thing to do to the up and coming Kennedy, although the match could be good. The other match that I have hopes for is the Cruiserweight Open. I hope to see some good high flying action with the Cruiserweight moves that we all know and love. Everything else on the card to me, is just eh... Lets hope this PPV isn't a total bust but it's not one that I am going to buy.
Alex Mattis: The main event is pretty star studded and I assume the E is expecting a good buy rate from this show, other than that I don't really know what else the card offers. I guess those who tune in will find out what the next chapter on the ugly road to WrestleMania 23 will be, and by the way, didn't they do this last year on free TV, the two WrestleMania main events against each other? Something to think about.
Sean Garmer: This will be the 1st PPV we don't order, mainly due to money issues, but I wouldn't be able to watch it because of school anyway, and I doubt we are going to see something like last year with a match of the year candidate. Benoit & Hardys vs. MNM & MVP could be interesting but the tag Ladder match makes more sense to me, because Deuce & Domino should be nowhere near those titles at this point. They just came into the WWE not too long ago. Their gimmick doesn't even look like they need titles, sure it makes sense because they've been feuding with each other, but it's silly. Lashley vs. Kennedy could be pretty good especially now that Kennedy seems to like using psychology. The main event tag match is kinda cool and I like the way they've done the build-up. I expect that to be good as well, most of the matches look like they could make this a good PPV, but it is something you can miss and not be out of the loop. They should just go ahead and make this a triple brand PPV because that's what it looks like.
Match of the Week Nominees: Bobby Lashley vs. Hardcore Holly (ECW), 14 Man #1 Contender's Gauntlet Match (TNA), Johnny Nitro & Melina vs. Super Crazy & Mickie James, RAW & SmackDown 8-Man Tag Match (RAW), John Cena & Shawn Michaels vs. Kennedy & MVP, Undertaker & Batista vs. Rated RKO (SmackDown).
David Martell: Undertaker & Batista vs. Rated RKO
Alex Mattis: 14 Man Gauntlet Match
Sean Garmer: Bobby Lashley vs. Hardcore Holly
Now! Time for Feedback
This one comes from our loyal follower John Bryant Bateman
Hey guys. Well my Dream match requires a little fantasy......no duh it's a Dream match. So I wanted you guys, yes David & Alex too, no wussing out on Feedback this time. I want to see what you guys would think on an Owen Hart-Petey Williams X-Division match. just don't be all realistic with ya BS or whatever. and if ya want, gimme your thoughts on Dream Matches that will unfortunately never be able to happen. like Eddy Guerrero vs Christopher Daniels. or any match ideas you come up with.
Sean Garmer: I don't know what your fascination is with Petey Williams but I'll take a gander at the fact that you are in love with the Canadian Destroyer. I think this probably could have been a good match-up between a great Canadian from the Hart family, and Petey. I think Owen would win because he has more ways to beat you than the one that Petey has lol. Eddie vs. CD would be awesome but then again Owen or Eddie vs. any of the great ones of today would have been total greatness.
