The 10th Day News Report for 3.21.07
Posted by Leonard Hayhurst on 03.21.2007

I was on the phone with my friend Sean, so I had ECW on in the background, but didn't really watch it. It seemed like a pretty middle of the road show.

MAILBAG

Hey Leonard -

Just wanted to drop you a quick line of "thanks" for plugging my Heat Spoilers in your latest column! In a related note, the jobbers billed as Mike Bennett and Danny Jax who wrestled (and lost) on Heat were also one in the same as the guys dubbed Mike Deke and Danny Jax who wrestled (and lost) on ECW this week. Too bad WWE Fantasy didn't have those guys in the mix – two shows in a week's time, and ya' just KNOW they woulda been a STEAL at a combined value of $250,000, tops.

Ah well. Thanks for the plug, and nice work as usual!
- Meehan

Thank you for the thanks and thanks for the results. I figured Deke and Jax were the same guys. Joey Styles probably lost the paper with their names on it and just made something up. I think "some jobber" would be a great addition to WWE Fantasy Manager.

William wrote and asked me if Edge and Undertaker were both undefeated at Wrestlemania in our EWR game. If I remember correctly Edge lost in our game last year to Christian. I did say to him that I booked our match, because I think Edge vs. Undertaker streak vs. streak would be a great angle a couple years from now.

I've been saying the same for the last 2 years...I'm hoping Edge and Orton collide so bad, they get taken out of Money in the Bank, and put in a singles match, where edge wins and keeps his streak, cause I just don't see him winning MitB again...then edge can challenge 'Taker for his streak, cause I'm also hoping Batista doesn't win...although, it would be cool is Edge won his second money in the bank, and instead of challenging Cena, he challenged 'Taker just seconds after he wins it from Batista, then won...and then can claim he was the one to defeat the Undertaker and end his streak...you'd have two ready made post-wrestlemania feuds, Edge and Batista and Edge and 'Taker...
-William

I like that angle, but I think you get more out of milking the buildup to their big Wrestlemania showdown. In my mind, Edge is the odds on favorite to win the money in the bank match. Of course, having Orton in there complicates things and I like the idea of taking them out. Remember in years past it was only six guys in the match and this year is eight. If they're gone I like Kennedy to win. They teased that idea on RAW.

NEWS AND NOTES

-In response to a recent Sport Illustrated article that linked several wrestlers to a steroid buying scandal (including Rey Mysterio, Eddie Guerrero, Kurt Angle, Edge, Shane Helms and Randy Orton) WWE released a statement yesterday that all accusations predate the current wellness program. WWE explains that the program prohibits performance enhancing drugs and other narcotics if taken for other than a legitimate medical purpose and assigned by a licensed physician. Prescriptions and pharmaceuticals from the internet are not considered valid with them. The statement did not confirm or deny any allegations. At least you can say that WWE has dealt with the issue better than Major League Baseball and other ‘real sports.' It was reported that WWE did drug testing of over two dozen talents at the Smackdown and ECW tapings last night. It's very possible this was done as a response to the article, but WWE never announces when the tests will take place. Credit: WWE Press Release

-In your online Heat report Cade and Murdoch lost to the Major Brothers. I hope their first names are Drum and College. I'm also reminded of Major Major Major from Catch-22. Charlie Haas made Robbie McAllister tap out. Cryme Tyme jobbed Mike Kruel and Boris Alexiev. Jim Duggan mowed down Jason Bates. They should team Bates with Chris Masters. Mickie James beat Victoria as the only two women in the company that know how to wrestle. In the dark main event John Cena defeated Umaga by DQ. Edge said it would have been him jobbing in the dark main event like old times, but he was tired and stuff from the battle royal. Sure. Credit: PWInsider.com

-Lillian Garcia was not at RAW due to suffering a knee injury skiing over the weekend. She was scheduled for an MRI, but should be back soon. Credit: PWInsider.com

-RAW did a 3.3 rating the first hour on Monday and 4.0 the second hour. That will leave them with about a 3.7 total rating, because TV math is funky. This is down significantly from past weeks, which is not a good sign with Wrestlemania coming up. Credit: PWInsider.com

-Model Christine LeMaster had a tryout with Deep South Wrestling last week. Through her MySpace page she stated that she would not be singing with WWE because it was not in the best interests of her current professional and personal situation. Meaning Vince wouldn't cough up enough dough for her to get naked in Playboy. Credit: PWInsider.com

-Amy Dumas, Lita, has announced that her band the Luchagores have finished their first album and a release date will be set soon. She didn't so much announce it as shout it while standing in line at an Arthur Treacher's like somebody would care. Credit: PWInsider.com

-Vito will be posing in the new Playgirl magazine hitting shelves tomorrow. We will now know if the ‘Big' nickname is appropriate. Usually guys in dresses are another magazine. Not that I read any of those magazines mind you, stop looking at me that way. Credit: PWInsider.com

-Kane and Ashley Massaro are both slated to guest star on "Smallville" this Thursday on the CW Network. Kane plays a Phantom Zone prisoner named Titan participating in an underground fight club of super powered fighters. Ashley plays a security guard. Let's have Kane's character fight that bone sucking guy Batista played. Credit: PWInsider.com

-Rapper Ludacris in a recent interview on XM Satellite radio stated that he will be performing at Wrestlemania 23. Credit: PWInsider.com

-There are still no plans to air the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony in the US, but TSN in Canada will broadcast the ceremony at 11 pm est on March 31st. The show is slated to be on the Wrestlemania 23 DVD as a bonus feature. Credit: PWInsider.com

-The Fort Wayne, Indiana Smackdown taping for the week after Wrestlemania is advertising Batista vs. Undertaker for the World Heavyweight title. It could be a dark main event. Credit: PWInsider.com

-WWE has scheduled a press conference in Orlando, Florida this morning with the intentions of announcing that Wrestlemania 24 will be held at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. Scheduled to be present are Vince McMahon, John Cena, Melina, Batista, Ashley and Bobby Lashley. They should go back to the Trump Casino. And hold another show long title tournament. And invite back Bob Uecker. And where the hell are those sweet ass ring carts? Credit: Daytona News Journal

-Mick Foley's new book the Hardcore Diaries debuted at number seven last week on the New York Times non-fiction bestseller list. It was the best debut for a WWE related book in several years. Most probably thought it had to do with porn. "Eww, I'm not whacking off to this guy." Credit: PWInsider.com

-Brock Lesnar is rumored to be debuting in MMA on 6/2 in Los Angeles for K-1's offshoot league HEROES. Lesnar's probable opponent is seven foot two inch Korean giant Hong Man Choi. If fighting doesn't work out, that guy could get a gig in porno. Credit: PWInsider.com

-Hulk Hogan stated on Bubba the Love Sponge radio show yesterday that he is considering starting a Legends of Wrestling tour. This is an idea he's been kicking around for awhile, but he hasn't really moved on it yet. I believe this is the 500th idea mentioned in this column that got stolen within weeks. So since you read the column Hogan, let me book your fed. I've got four words for you: World Champion Repo Man. Credit: PWInsider.com

WWE FANTASY MANAGER

Week 8 Team

Randy Orton: 50 points-2nd
Joey Mercury: 39 points-5th
Johnny Nitro: 39 points-5th
Kane: 27 points-11th
Bobby Lashley: 26 points-12th
MVP: 15 points-20th
Batista: 10 points-35th
The Great Khali: 10 points-35th
Week Total: 216 points
Grand Total: 2129 points
World Rank: 40th

Synopsis: I didn't do as bad as I thought, but it wasn't a great week. Orton was a no brainer. Lashley didn't come through like he has lately. Khali and Batista were busts. MVP didn't live up to my expectations. At least I was right in having Mercury and Nitro as major sleeper picks. This week I'm just hoping I can hold steady and then go for broke at Wrestlemania. I haven't given up yet, but I'm thinking about it.

Week 9 Team

Shawn Michaels and John Cena ($10 million total): I wish I would have had this last week, but the fantasy board rulings on the gauntlet didn't make them the monster points getters I would have thought. This week they were booked before the deadline and should win their matches in build to Wrestlemania. However, losing by interference isn't out of the question. The Michaels match not going down really hurts, but Cena came through.

Bobby Lashley and Chris Masters ($8 million): Lashley was booked to take the Masterlock Challenge before the deadline. I think Lashley has a good shot at winning or Umaga will cause a wonky finish. Either way both men will get major points because the challenge is viewed as a specialty match. Maybe I should have went with someone other than Masters, but Lashley I pegged right. Them doing another match on ECW helps out a lot.

MVP ($3 million): I'm thinking he causes Benoit to lose to Cena. This will lead to another match for him on Smackdown. I think he could have a monster week to get him ready for Wrestlemania. I'm sorry he didn't show up for the Cena and Benoit match as I thought.

Kane and the Great Khali ($6.5 million): They can show up on two different shows and get in a lot of weapon shots. Their Wrestlemania match still isn't officially declared, so I expect some big storyline movement this week. Khali didn't wrestle, but he did something.

Elijah Burke ($2 million): The New Breed have been good value picks this whole season. Burke is actually cheaper than Cor Von and Thorne and makes a better pick because he's their mouthpiece and wrestles a lot because of it. I look for more with him and CM Punk and for him to get his win back from Dreamer from last week. I nailed this one.

Hornswaggle ($500,000): It's all the money I had left. I can only hope that mini-Boogeyman returns for a grudge match.

Wrestlemania 23 for 3.25.07

(Match description from Mathew)
Angle, after setting up a chair on the outside to sit down and relax in a show of disrespect to Flair's entrance starts the stopwatch, and comes out like a bull at the gate, sliding into the ring as Flair gets rid of his robe to cheap shot him then dismantling Flair with lots of high impact moves and getting the first pin in 3:59. He stops the stopwatch, then locks in an Ankle Lock. Ric fights and fights, but eventually gets grapevined for the tap out. However, this has left Eric tired, and (after undoing a turnbuckle) he recovers with a few long, simple leg holds, also giving Flair time to recover. At 15 or so, Eric tries for a Figure 4, but gets rolled up for Ric's first fall. Eric quickly goes back to time killing; I mean methodical work, after an Angle Slam to take Flair out again. At the halfway mark, Eric gets another Ankle Lock, and Ric taps again. 3-1 Eric lets go, pulls down the straps, and goes to lock it in again, but Ric counters and Eric goes flying to the outside where his head goes thunk into the chair he was sitting in before. Eric is knocked a little goofy, and is counted out. 3-2. But then he breaks the second count, and the two share chops. Flair gets the upper hand, and starts beating down Eric. 45 mins in, Flair goes up, and Eric runs, Flair landing on his feet but causing his ankle to buckle. Eric grabs the chair, slides in, pilmanises the ankle for the DQ. 3-3. An ankle lock gets a near immediate tap out. 4-3. Another one, same thing. 5-3. Eric then gets cocky, locking in a really weak legbar. He then goes up top with 10 to go, misses a moonsault, Flair rolls him up with tights, 5-4. Eric charges, eats the exposed buckle, patented Flair roll up in corner makes it 5-5. Eric then gets serious again, and with 5 to go gets a fall off an Angle-Plex, 6-5. Thinking it's over, he again goes for a figure 4, blocks the attempted roll up, but then falls victim to a kick off, once again into the turnbuckle. Flair then goes for an Angle-Plex but buckles, ending up nailing a sort of brainbuster instead. In the mess Flair does get on top, 6-6. Eric goes nuts with the nearfalls as the clock winds down, eventually locking in the Ankle Lock with a minute to go. Flair holds on, he is about to tap, the leg is grapevined, he's holding on, he's holding on...Flair taps a second after the end of time. Eric pleads and begs for sudden death, Teddy Long via PA grants it, turns around, thumb to the eye, low blow as the ref calls for the bell to restart, Flair DDT, Angle Slam, cover, 3 count, Flair wins.

Angle looks to attack Flair post match, but almost the entire locker room clears out to back him off. They lift Flair on their shoulders and parade him out of the ring.
