WRESTLEMANIA 23 THOUGHTS
By Phill Feltham
It's been a busy month, however after much trials and tribulations. The man with the mouth is back.
First off Wrestlemania. I can tell you, it didn't turn out as I expected. I was looking for a walk down nostalgia lane but we got a card totally different. Just as good, in my opinion.
The Undertaker winning the World title wasn't much of a surprise. When Ross said on Smackdown that UT had never held the World title, I knew for a fact that Batista was going to drop it to the Deadman. Booker T stepping in as the number one contender for the World title is a little premature in my opinion. This is where the Great Khali should move to Smackdown to fight the Deadman. Hey, he beat his "brother" Kane at WrestleMania. It's perfect for storyline continuity.
John Cena beating Shawn Michaels at Mania was a sigh of relief. As much as I like what Michaels has done in this sport, I don't know if I could stomach him as champion again. I wonder if they'll let Edge and Randy Orton feud Cena? It will no doubt be Michaels again, at least for Unforgiven.
The Hardyz are tag champions again for the RAW brand. This presents a very interesting scenerio. Two things. First, the Hardyz have the perfect opportunity to get over with the fans and then drop the titles to the World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin). Here is the reason. Matt and Jeff want success in singles matches so this will cause dissention between the brothers. Matt is the obvious choice as the heel. Why? Think about it. Matt's been with the WWE pretty much non stop. Jeff's been finding himself, wrestling for TNA and trying to change careers. Now he walks back into the WWE and wins gold within weeks of his arrival. A perfect scenerio.
Also keep in mind, Edge is on the same show. A surprise alliance with Matt and Edge would be interesting to say the least. Even a Jeff Hardy/ Edge combo has some interest, but I don't know if Edge would go over well as the face.
Edge must be distraught considering he lost his winning streak to Mr. Kennedy in the Eight Man Ladder match at WrestleMania 23. Kennedy is a worthy winner, but Edge deserves it more. Next year, Edge will treat that loss like it never happened.
My excitement hit the roof when Jim Ross was announced into the Hall Of Fame. Sure, I already knew about it thanks to 411 Mania Wrestling, but the video package on Raw and the crowd response for Ross was amazing. I was on my feet giving that man a standing ovation.
Jim Ross is one WWE talent who has always well represented the fans. I remember the Ross Report on the WWE Hotline. This was long before WWE.com. The Hotline was active during its WWE on America Online days. I paid $1.99 a minute to get the latest dirt on professional wrestling. His column remained strong on the Internet. Now he does a pseudo Ross Report on his Recipe Website. Good for you, Jimmy. More claps for you.
I have tons of more thoughts, but I'll end it here for this week. Keep on watching.
