The Fink’s Payload 04.09.07: Backlash
Posted by Sforcina-Marsico on 04.09.2007

Matt: Hello, and welcome to The Fink's Payload. I am Matt Sforcina, the man who has brought Evolution Schematic back, baby! And therefore, have proven, once and for all, that I and I alone own/came up with the ideas of kayfabe columns and reviewing past careers. I did I did I did!

Nick: Gotta love the Schematic. I have the ever popular News to Start Your Weekend. Check out my radio show, too. That's RocketBusta Radio. I missed most of last week and this week's shows, but I'll be back this Saturday night.

Matt: So, we got some great ideas for Backlash. Samuel Hall starts us off with a sadly now outdated idea. Still, it's one for the ideas book Fink.

John Cena comes out on the 2/4 edition of Raw, explaining how much the match against Shawn Michaels meant to him. He reflects on his childhood slightly, going into Cena/Rock-mode with the funny little anecdotes before the drums of the D-Generation X entrance hit, heralding HBK to the stage. He refuses to enter the ring, almost showing disdain for Cena and his soppy tales of his childhood. He explains how he used to be like Cena and living in a dream land; going onto to say how there's a difference between ''living in a dreamland'' and ''living the dream''. To the mixed reaction of the crowd and Cena, Michaels reports that he's going to relinquish his Tag Team Championship if Cena doesn't accept his offer of a Wrestlemania rematch at Backlash. Un-impressed with the lack of effort to convince him, Cena mentions that with what happened on RAW last week, "being a tag team partner with you is like knowing about your future homicide" - or something along those lines.

Shawn tries again. To make the offer even more difficult for the Champ, HBK gives Cena the advantage of choosing the match type at Backlash, prompting Cena to think about it.

Next week on the 9/4 edition of Raw, Cena and HBK tensely meet up in Coach's office regarding a Tag Team Title defense for the night, but like an eager beaver HBK asks Cena about his offer, to which Cena simply replies with "I'm still thinking about it." The booked match is a Triple Threat Tag Match with Benjamin/Haas and Cryme Tyme. When it comes down to the match itself, Cena and HBK dominate, with Cena and JTG getting down with some "gangster antics." Cena goes on his rampage, smashing through the competition until HBK tags himself in for his diving elbow on Haas. Shawn stares down Cena, slowly shaking his head side-to-side before blasting an interfering Benjamin with some Sweet Chin Music. Haas takes some too, and to the shock of Cena and some of the crowd, so does Shad Gaspard and JTG. Shawn then goes to the outside, takes both the Tag Titles and walks up the ramp with Cena taking chase. In the closing segment of the show, it goes back to Coach's office with HBK threatening to hand in both belts. Coach explains that he can't do that, but asks why Shawn didn't just cost them the match; to which Michaels explains that he can't have anyone pin Cena until he does at Backlash, "can't have him looking weak." After that, he's fair game. Coach asks if this is what he really wants, and then declares the Tag Team Championships vacant.

On Tuesday, WWE.com puts up an announcement from the Board of Directors that London & Kendrick, being the 4th longest reigning champions are the most eligible candidates to receive the World Tag Team Titles, reinforcing the decision by saying that "more competition will be brought to the Tag Team Division as the champions can defend the titles on all three shows now". The unification made official on Raw next week. In addition to this, a message is posted, with Cena accepting the rematch with HBK at Backlash and revealing the match-type chosen next week too.

The 13/4 edition of Smackdown has a match between Regal/Taylor and London/Kendrick, giving the champions a convincing and entertaining win, prompting Matt Hardy to challenge the new World Tag Team Champions to a match at Backlash for the new Undisputed Tag Team Championships. Being the underdogs, the challenge is accepted, with Matt and Paul shaking hands in a competitive style.

One week before Backlash, Cena comes out first and instantly tells the audience that his match with HBK will be a Steel Cage Match. Shawn comes out straight after hearing this and mocks Cena for choosing such a baby-ish match, basically provoking Cena to choose a Three Stages of Hell match after some clever persuasion from HBK. With that, the Coach steps in and is inspired by this announcement to have Shawn and John place two bets on matches tonight on Raw. The winning betting man for each match gets to pick one of the matches at Backlash.

The unification goes off without a hitch, except when JTG steps in with his ''crip-walk'' and teases a title match with London and Kendrick. Just as London and Kendrick step out the door to prepare for their singles matches against Matt and Jeff, Benjamin and Haas just walk past, staring them down without even saying a word and walk away.

So the first match has Cena betting on Matt Hardy, while HBK bets on Paul London. Having a totally clean match, London gets the win as HBK "in-advertently" distracts Hardy with his cheering for London - resulting in London getting the win with a huracarana pin. HBK gets on the mic, and instantly declares the third fall will be a match he knows best; a Ladder Match.

In the second match of the night, Cena decides to keep with the Hardys, betting on Jeff while HBK bets on Brian Kendrick with both men at ringside. It's a match with near-fall after near-fall, but Hardy picks up a win via disqualification as the other angry Tag Teams on Raw (Cade/Murdoch, WGTT) attack Kendrick, demanding that they should be having a match for the World Tag Team Championships, explaining why a Smackdown-team should be holding a Raw Championship. Coachman appears on the Titantron and says that while he "can't take the unified titles away from London and Kendrick, you four guys can". With that, he makes a match right on the spot between the HBK and WGTT and John Cena, Cade and Murdoch, with the winning tag team going on to face both the Hardys and the Champs at Backlash.

In the end, HBK commands the match, making sure Cena doesn't get pinned as he doesn't care about the stipulation - hitting his superkick on Cade for the win. Michaels storms up the ramp, but Cena grabs the mic from Lillian as the winners are announced and declares the second fall for the Three Stages of Hell...A Submission Match. HBK just smiles as he sees how he's changed Cena, as the show ends.

So in this long escapade, John Cena defends the WWE Championship against Shawn Michaels in a Three Stages of Hell match (First Fall: Singles; Second Fall: Submission; Third Fall: Ladder), while Brian Kendrick and Paul London defend the Undisputed Tag Team Championships against The Hardys and the WGTT.

Matt: NONONONONO. I refuse to see the Tag Belts unified. The minute you do that, the Brand Extension is officially dead in the water. And I don't want that. No way, no how.

Nick: Big fan of the tag belts being unified. Hate the way you went about it. Having London and Kendrick be declared good enough to get the first shot I loved. Having Matt respectfully challenge London I loved. Having Shawn and Cena bet on their singles matches? Ridiculous. In a bad way. In an instant you went from giving the tag belts all sorts of credibility and importance to making them a side show attraction used only as a tool for the main event. Bad, bad idea. I also don't like that all of a sudden the Hardys/L&K match got turned into a multi-team match. Also a very shitty idea. Simple is better, especially when you have a prospective classic and you ruin it before even giving it a chance.

I thought making the WWE Title match a cage match was good. But then you got silly and gimmicky with the 3 Stages of Hell match. Completely unnecessary. If you want that, go play SmackDown vs. RAW. Your idea had a lot of promise, but you brought it into the land of make believe and it just got bad.

Matt: And alas, I think we have our theme for the evening. Angelo Velotta also has an idea for Cena/HBK, and it too is slightly out of date…

The first Raw after WrestleMania has The Coach come out and declare that Cena and Michaels defend the tag straps tonight against the Number 1 Contenders Cryme Tyme. Cena goes to hit an FU on Gaspard, but Michaels nails Cena with Sweet Chin Music allowing Cryme Tyme to steal the titles. The next week on Raw there is a match for the number 1 contender to Cena, pitting Michaels vs. Orton. Michaels tunes up the band but Orton ducks out of the way and nails the ref. Cena comes down and nails Michaels with an FU and then locks on the STFU, before the ref gets up. Once he's up, Orton waits and hits an RKO for the win. The next week on Raw we get Cena vs. Orton for the title, No Holds Barred. Michaels runs down and nails Cena with a chair repeatedly setting Orton up to hit an RKO on the chair and pins Cena, but Cena kicks out at 2! Michaels then Superkicks the chair into Cena's face and Orton pins him for 3, and wins the title. The next week on Raw Cena comes out irate. He says first Michaels cost them the tag titles, then he cost Michaels his title shot, but then, Michaels damnit, cost him his title. Cena tells Michaels to come out here and except his invitation to a Street Fight at Backlash. Michaels comes out and says "I only tapped at WrestleMania because it was impossible to make it to the ropes. But when I fight you at Backlash, you can lock on the STFU for the whole program if you'd like, because that won't help either of us climb the ladder for the #1 contendership." So the match is booked, Cena vs. Michaels in a Ladder Match for the #1 contender's shot.

So that takes us to Backlash, where after a grueling twenty plus minutes these two kill each other. In the end, Cena FU's Michaels off a super ladder, and then climbs up and grabs the contract. After the match Cena goes to shake Michaels hand again, and Michaels says that he will NEVER EVER have his respect.

Matt: Orton as champ? Ehhh. I don't know if I'd be willing to see Orton vs. Cena just yet. Although HBK as heel, I do like, assuming you meant it that way, with Cena it's often hard to tell one way or the other.

Nick: Orton as champ? UGGGGGGH. That's the correct response, Matt. Don't like the ladder match idea either. We JUST had one at WrestleMania, remember? This is one of my biggest qualms with mainstream wrestling fans right now. Everything has to be over the top with lots of gimmicks and crazy stipulations when none of them are necessary. I'm surprised more of you aren't all over TNA. Simplicity people, please!

Matt: Another guy who didn't quite grasp the time delay (which is my fault for not pointing it out really) is Billy Ayers, who books a different match than HBK/Cena.

The night after WrestleMania the main event is Orton vs. Cena. Orton vs. Cena goes on for about 12 minutes and it ends when Cena gets a rollup out of nowhere for the pin. Edge comes out with taped ribs and attacks Cena. Edge gets 2 chairs and Edge and Orton set up for the conchairto, but then out of nowhere Edge nails Orton with a chair. Edge hits Orton in the face again and sets up for the spear which connects. Orton is a bloody mess as Edge leaves the ring. Cena checks on Orton.

The next week on raw Edge comes out to open the show. "Hey don't boo me, I did what I had to, Orton you selfish son of a bitch you did nothing but watch as Jeff Hardy took me out of the Money In The Bank ladder match. You screwed me over! My undefeated WrestleMania streak is over. Now some of you may ask well Edge why don't you get Hardy back because it was his fault. Well yes it was but that was expected because we were opponents but Orton we were former tag team champions you're supposed to have my back. Now don't worry because Hardy will get what is coming to him but for now Orton your ass is mine." Orton comes out of the crowd and attacks Edge from behind. Orton sets up for the RKO but Edge throws him off and sets up for the spear. Edge goes for the spear but Orton moves and Edge goes into the post. Orton starts wailing on Edge with blows but Edge low blows Orton and rolls out of the ring. Edge pulls Orton out of the ring and throws him into the ring post busting Orton open again. Edge throws Orton over the announce table and leaves through the crowd.

Raw opens up with Jeff Hardy coming out for his match with Edge. Edge wins in about 6 minutes with the spear. Randy Orton runs down the ramp with stitches in his head and he chases Edge off with a chair. Orton grabs the mic and challenges Edge to a match at backlash. In the main event Orton faces Johnny Nitro and beats him with the RKO. Edge comes out and attacks Orton. Edge and Nitro beat Orton down and Edge grabs the mic. "Orton as far as your little challenge I accept!"

Raw before Backlash's main event is Orton and Hardy vs. Nitro and Edge. Fast paced 15 minute main event, Edge avoids Orton the entire match until the end. Orton grabs Edge but Nitro comes up behind him. Orton turns around and hits an RKO on Nitro and gets the pin as Edge rolls out of the ring not caring for the match. Orton stares Edge down as the show goes off the air.

Backlash, Edge vs. Orton, great 18 minute match. Orton gets busted open at the 10 minute mark due to Edge throwing him into the ring steps. Orton goes for the RKO but Edge throws him off and gets a roll up for the win. This match would help kick start a feud that could last all summer.

Matt: I don't think a non-title match should end the last show before the PPV unless it's the main event, like a gimmick match or some such. Apart from that, not bad. Keeping Edge as the sole talker is a good idea if you want to turn Orton face here.

Nick: Are you writing this in 1956? Edge turned on Orton weeks ago. Even Edge's character isn't silly enough to claim that Orton screwed him over and should have had his back. Also, why would Cena check on Orton? Common sense, please. There's no reason for him to do that. Other than that, I have no real problems with it. I'd try to find somebody other than Nitro, though. Also, don't give match times like that. Match times, especially ones that don't mean much, are unnecessary. If a match is going to run really long or really short it's one thing. Between 15 and 25 minutes is basic match time, though, so there's no need to mention that stuff. Honestly, anything above 3 minutes or below 40 isn't spectacular enough to bother mentioning in a forum like this.

Matt: Andy DiNunzio is up to date, although using information that has apparently changed since it was reported. Still, let's read on, shall we?

Cena won Wrestlemania. I think it's the first time since Hulk Hogan won Wrestlemanias 2 and 3 that a champion has defended his belt against two different contenders in the main event, and won. Cena should play that up. I'd like to seem become like Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Good and the Dead." His comes to the ring and the boos are loud and in force again. He looks out and says, "You people are booing me? I bust my ass night in and night out. I am too young to be the damn good in the ring; look this good; and have a top movie and rap CD. All of ya'll are just jealous. Who else has come in here and in two straight main events beaten the like of Triple H and HBK. NOBODY! I am just too damn good and I am too damn talented. Ain't nobody in the back that can beat me. Ain't nobody on Smackdown that can beat me. Ain't nobody in ECW that can beat me." This leads to a charge from the back by everyone. Cena bails and slips past everyone to be back on the ramp. "Uh-uh! I beat each and everyone of you before and now you gotta start all over again." This brings out Mick Foley as the new GM. "As the new general manager of Raw, I must say that you Mr. Cena are very very full of yourself. (cheer from the crowd) But you are also correct in many ways. (boos) That is why here tonight in Hershey, PA (gotta plug my hometown arena) we will have the beginnings of a tournament to determine the #1 contender for that belt. But that does not mean you get the time off. Oh no. You will be in a tag match with the Samoan Bulldozer Umaga against the Hardy Boys for their World Tag Team Championships. Have a nice day."

The first match is Ric Flair vs. Carlito. They go back and forth until finally Carlito gets the win when he gets Flair to submit to a figure four garnering the hatred of the crowd. This completes Carlito's turn back to being a heel, and puts him in a feud with Flair to help him get over too. Hacksaw Jim Duggan advances into the second round, for nostalgia's sake. He cuts a promo about the last time he was in a tournament, he got caught off guard by Andre the Giant, and won't happen again. He hits the three point stance clothesline on Charlie Haas. The next match is Kane vs. Chris Masters. It's slow and lumbering but, Chris Maters gets the win to advance, when Kane is hit with his chain by the Great Khali. Shelton Benjamin is up next. He puts up a good fight, but loses to a newly traded Chris Benoit, who Mick got from Teddy Long for the new West Texas Rednecks, Cade and Murdoch (who need a new start on Smackdown). The Great Khali demands a match, and Mick Foley gives him one against the re-signed Big Show. In a giant versus giant match, Show wins it when he chokeslams Khali, after Kane interferes and hits Khali with his chain. Big Show then sits back and watches Randy Orton pin Shawn Michaels, when Edge's interference backfires. Edge is up next and goes in and spears Eugene, and pins him in 8 seconds flat. Kenny Dykstra comes up and is all excited about being in the tournament, until he gets tot he ring and hears Bobby Lashley announced as his opponent. Kenny gives him a run for his money, but Lashley wins to face Edge next. The last match of the night is of course the tag titles and Umaga and Cena work surprisingly well, making Jeff Hardy play the face in peril. The match turns when Umaga goes for the avalanche in the corner with Cena holding Hardy, but Jeff moves quickly and Umaga nails Cena. Jeff quickly rolls the Samoan up a for a quick 3 count and the Hardys escape with the belts intact. Cena just walks off to close the show.

The next week Carlito pins Duggan with a Back Cracker after hitting him with Carlito's version of the three point stance. Masters tries in vain to put the Masterlock on Chris Benoit, but when he goes to the well once too often, Benoit takes him down into the Crossface, and Masters taps. Randy again lucks out as Big Show is taken out in back by the Khali/Kane fight. So Randy gets a bye to go the semi-finals. Edge works hard and gets a good match out of Bobby. Lashley proves he can hang with someone who wants to work and bump for him. Edge gets pinned when Randy comes out and gives him a RKO followed by Lashley's powerslam. Meanwhile Umaga and Cena are fighting in the back, but Mick says that they have another chance against the Hardys. This time Cena is pinned when Umaga blows the double team attempt.

The semi-finals happen and Benoit finally makes Carlito pay as he taps to Benoit's own figure four when Ric Flair comes down and chop blocks Carlito on the outside of the ring. Edge hates Orton, but hates the fact that he lost to someone he considers inferior to him in Bobby Lashley. Edge helps Randy by spearing Lashley outside the ring, and after Orton pins him demands a shot at Lashley's ECW title to prove that is a hardcore legend. Mick gives Cena another chance this time with Chris Masters as his partner. Halfway through the match Masters hits Cena with a forearm, and Cena walks out. Masters falls prey to the patented Hardy double team maneuvers and is pinned. Just as Matt and Jeff start to celebrate out come Haas and Benjamin. They lay them out and take the belts away.

The last week before Backlash, Cena is again in a tag match with Masters. This time he has to face Big Show and Kane who have reunited for a night. Cena has none of it and walks out just as Masters gets the double chokeslam. Benoit and Orton put on a clinic. Orton works over the arm, so the Chris can't use the Crossface. Meanwhile Benoit works over Orton's legs, so he has trouble standing and can't effectively hit the RKO. The end comes when Edge gets his revenge on Orton and spears him, allowing his fellow Canadian to hit the diving headbutt and advance to the championship against Cena. Haas and Benjamin show up with the belts in hand. Mick demands them back. They say they will but only if they get a shot at the belts. Mick agrees, but then tells them it will be a TLC match with the Hardys and Cryme Tyme.

At Backlash, Cena tries to runs his mouth off to Benoit and reminds Chris of his loss to Cena in the lead-up to Wrestlemania. Benoit the ever silent but deadly assassin just listens and when Cena pokes him in the chest once to often, Chris grabs and hits a belly-to-belly overhead release suplex (paying homage to his buddy Kurt Angle). The match lasts for 20 minutes, each man gaining an advantage, but never being able to put the other away. The end comes when Benoit sits Cena on the top rope. Cena slips over Benoit's back, flips him over and pins him, using the ropes for extra leverage. This way Benoit gets his title shot at the next pay-per-view and Cena keeps his heat by cheating to win. Meanwhile in the TLC match TWGTT get the win when Cryme Tyme sucker punches Matt and Jeff lays himself out after another death defying leap from a 20' ladder. Edge is surprised when Randy Orton begs Mick to allow him to compete in the ECW title, just to get revenge on Edge. The match ends when Lashley hits the powerslam on Edge, but Orton dropkicks him off before the three count and wins the title. Michaels is pissed about not being in the main event, so Mick makes a deal with him. Michaels will get the shot on Raw the next night, if he can be patient and not interfere in Cena's match against Benoit. (This gives Shawn some time to rest some nagging injuries, especially his back.) Carlito again beats Flair, while Khali/Kane/Big Show ends up a bloody mess when Kane whips out the chain and nails Khali, setting up a triple threat chain match for the next PPV. Umaga defends his belt against a traded CM Punk who beats the bulldozer, providing a swap for Orton.

So I tried to keep the heat on Cena, meanwhile elevating Benoit back to the top of the mountain. The tag titles get defended and Umaga loses. The only glitch is whether Shawn's ego would let him take a rest for a week or two, to help up.

Matt: Yes, he could. But moving Benoit and Punk is a little bit risky in that they you kill the Punk/New Breed angle and Benoit has to lose the US title. Apart from that, and a few other problems (9 matches on 1 Raw? Carlito turning heel with a single move? Big Show back?), not bad.

Nick: Why does Cena get a tag title shot? He's a heel and he didn't even ask for one. Doesn't make sense for a face GM to give him one, especially with Umaga as a partner. The tournament may be the worst one ever. Big Show comes back and ends up in matches with a bunch of other big dopes? Masters advances? Jim Duggan? Cut out a whole round of the tournament and it cuts the fat. Also, ONCE AGAIN, there was already a fucking ladder match at the last PPV. Holy fuck, people, can nothing in this world be simple any more? I don't get why Orton wants to prove he's a hardcore legend, either. It doesn't make sense, even if Foley's around. He already beat Foley twice, once in a Hardcore match. He's also not the kind of character that would have any predilection for doing that. Can we PLEASE get a good idea?

Matt: And last, but certainly not least, Joe Hoferer books the whole damm card.

WWE Championship- Fatal Four Way- John Cena© vs. Randy Orton vs. HBK vs. Edge
With John Cena picking up the win at WrestleMania, HBK is sick and tired of admitting defeat and has demanded a rematch with his former tag team partner. Enter Rated RKO. Both Orton and Edge think that Michaels had his chance and it is time to move on. This week on RAW it is Orton vs. Michaels in a #1 Contenders Match. Both men are making a good showing at how bad they want their shot at the belt when all of a sudden Edge runs into the ring and spears Orton, getting HBK disqualified. This looks like a set up between RKO, but Edge goes on to spear HBK as well. The next week Coach proclaims that because of the blatant interference there will be a triple threat match for the #1 Contender spot at Backlash. Cena is interviewed before the match goes on, saying that he doesn't care who wins, he'll face them all if need be. The champ is at ring side with JR and The King doing guest commentary. All three men take their swipes at Cena during the match and Michaels steals the belt and hits Orton, ending the match in a DQ. Cena comes into the ring and a four man brawl ensues taking RAW off the air. The next week footage is shown of the match, and of Cena saying that he wouldn't mind if he had to face all three at once, which prompts a four man interview segment with Coach. He makes claim for seeing each one against Cena, and decides at the end of the night to make the main event at Backlash a Fatal Four Way for the WWE Championship. The main event of RAW is John Cena and Edge vs. Randy Orton and Shawn Michaels in a tag team match. Neither teams get along, but Orton and HBK agree to take out Cena. The match ends with Edge spearing the champ and walking away, allowing HBK to hit a big elbow for the win, and the momentum going into the PPV. As for how the Backlash match should go, any one winning here would be good, as long as the name is not CENA. He needs some time away from the belt and now is as good as ever. HBK with the belt during the summer could give some good balance and could feud with either of Rated RKO, while having Cena feuding with the other. I see a Cena vs. Edge feud without the belt being something decent while HBK goes on to a series of matches with Orton. Orton taking the Belt off of HBK could set up a match with HHH in the fall.

World Tag Team Championship-
I know what a lot of people are thinking, putting the belts on the Hardys is a been there, done that moment, but I feel that April 2, 2007 marked a small re-birth of the tag team division and could be the push that the RAW belts needed. Anyone who beats the Hardys cleanly for the belts would give them a good rub. I say that we give the tag team division a good start by having the Hardys put up the belts in a Tag Team Turmoil match, with a twist. The first part of the match would be like a #1 Contenders match, where the surviving team then faces the Hardys. Teams involved should be Cryme Tyme, Cade & Murdoch, The Highlanders, The World's Greatest Tag Team, Flair & Carlito, and Kenny Dykstra & Johnny Nitro (gives them something to do). I would push TWGTT right now as they could possibly give the Hardys a good match, and could set up a little feud over the early summer months. This match needs to be given around 10-12 mins for the Turmoil and then another 8-10 mins of fast paced action to give the Tag Division a good outing on PPV. (possibly then give the belts time off from PPV and then have a fatal-four way for the titles at say, VENGEANCE or G.A.B, then culminate with a Ladder Match for the belts at SummerSlam between Hardys and WGTT & maybe put in London & Kendrick and the WWE Tag belts, just to make it interesting)

ECW Championship – Bobby Lashley© vs. Umaga-Extreme Rules
I could see an Umaga w/ AAE jump to ECW. Nothing is more extreme than a 350 lb. hell bent powerhouse who has a good evil manager. (Think Yokozuna, or at least half of him) Let this one build through the summer, maybe have Umaga take the belt off him here to build for another match at ONS.

Confrontation between Batista and Undertaker – Teddy Long Announcement of Hell in a Cell at JD
Just because all 3 brands are represented at PPV's doesn't mean they all have to defend their belts. Make this announcement to try to jump the buyrate of the next PPV.

Women's Championship- Mickie James vs. Melina©
Meh, just to get the belt off of Melina.

United States Championship- Chris Benoit© vs. M.V.P - Best 2-out of 3 falls
After seeing the way these two matched up at Mania I could see them putting up a good contest for the US belt and in no better way than a 2 of 3 falls match. MVP looked to be in control of the Rabid Wolverine at the last PPV only to come up just a little short, but in a 2 of 3 falls match he could regain his momentum later in the match and possibly upset the Crippler.

Mr. Kennedy vs. Finlay
These two could put on a good 10 minute match with some comedy brief (no pun intended) spots between Hornswaggle and the Briefcase. Just keep a slow build as to when MR. Kennedy decides to cash in the contract……Kennedy!

RVD vs. Elijah Burke – Guest Referee: C.M. Punk
C.M. Punk is being badgered by the New Breed to join, but is always resistant. RVD comes in to tell Punk that it is OK to be himself, to be unique, and to be ORIGINAL. Punk then feels that he is being torn between both of the groups and cannot decide whether he should join any of them. New Breed say that if you are not with us, then your against us and make him prove that he isn't favoring one group over the other by officiating a match between them.

Matt: I dunno, this just lacks…something. Maybe Victoria. Apart from that, it's pretty sweet.

Nick: There's no reason for Hell in a Cell. I mentioned it last week here in the Payload. No more cell matches until at least 2010, and it has to be between two guys who have never been in one and are at the point in their blood feud that it has to be settled there. That way it means something. As far as the matches for Backlash, I don't like Tag Turmoil. If they're going to be serious about a tag division, they should get as far away as possible from booking matches that were the pinnacle of the directionless tag division. Tag Team Turmoil is the first to go. I'm expecting Lashley vs. Khali, especially after we already got Umaga/Lashley again on RAW, and it looks like McMahon has lost faith in Umaga and Estrada. The rest I like. Honestly, outside of the tag stuff and the Hell in a Cell announcement, this is the only submission I liked this week. Good enough for me.

Matt: So, now we come to our ideas.

Melina vs. Mickie vs. Victoria vs. Nattie Neidhart for the Women's Title. That doesn't need booking.

Nick: I'm kinda expecting the Hardys vs. Carlito & Flair. It looks like the latter are being built up as a team, and that's more than any other team on RAW. The Hardys just won the belts, and chances are very low that they'll be left off the PPV. If nothing else, this would set up for the Carlito turn on Flair that everybody's been looking for after they can't win the belts. I honestly want them to be kept together for a while, and when Carlito finally turns, he doesn't do it on Flair, but rather he just turns heel and turns his back on Flair. It could lead to an eventual match between the two, but the whole deal where tag partners turn on each other is overdone to the point where I can barely stomach it any more. It only worked with Orton and Edge because of their spot on the card and because they're doing it well and it wasn't a straight turn with the awful ‘surprise' beat down.

So yeah, Carlito & Flair are built up and beat a couple more teams leading to them getting a shot at the Hardys at Backlash. No real heavy feud or anything, either. The Hardys win some matches, Carlito & Flair win some matches, and that leads to C&F asking for and being granted a title shot due to their impressive showing, and then there's a match at the PPV. Simple and old school. No wacky stipulations or a forced blood feud or 80 ladders or stupid shit. Just some good build for two teams that leads to a match. Takes notes, people.

Matt: So, that's all for tonight. So, what's next?

Let's get really creative. Create a brand new gimmick match, with or without setup and booking if you want.

Nick: Oh goody. Our readers are going to have a field day with this one.

Send those ideas here..

Until next week,

Matt & Nick.
