The Quick Talkdown 4.21.07: ECW Originals Still Have a Glimmer of Hope
Posted by Phill Feltham on 04.21.2007

ECW ORIGINALS SHOW A LITTLE LIGHT
By Phill Feltham

The ECW Originals' victory at WrestleMania was a surprise to many wrestling fans. Who here were expecting the New Breed to win. Hands up. Most of us did, but as luck would have it, the Originals won that fateful night.

It's obvious to say that WWE's third brand hasn't worked out exactly as all parties involved thought it would. Why should it? Vince McMahon's XFL and the World Bodybuilding Federation were dismal failures, so isn't it appropriate to place ECW with that dunce cap as well?

Not really. Vince is the Harry Potter of wrestling. He can do anything he wants with his magic wand (mind out of the gutter) as long as he wants it to be there. There was a lot of magic in the beginning, but when then ECW Champion Rob Van Dam was busted for having a little pot, the confidence in the ECW went out the window.

The entire brand was to be built on Van Dam, but instead he smoked a bowl, instead of carrying the ball. It's alright though, ECW hasn't had its final curtain yet. Despite my frustration with the promotion that has unlimited potential, I still haven't lost hope.

Pothead Rob Van Dam has the same frustrations much like most ECW fans.

"This new ECW crap sucks and Sabu and Dreamer and Sandman and myself love representing the old school ECW the way we all loved it. Us vs the New Breed just keeps that glimmer of hope going for those of us who just don't know how to let go," he wrote on his website, RobVanDam.com.

It's nice to know that the passion of Sandman, Sabu, Rob Van Dam or Tommy Dreamer still lives off that glimmer of hope. It shows they aren't ready to quit just yet.

That passion I speak of shows in Tommy Dreamer's three-part column feature on ECW.com. In his open letter, he gave a little education to the New Breed on what ECW is really all about.

"Personally, I have nothing against any talent in ECW. Just as long as you realize the shoes you have to fill and understand that the guys who fill them are not ready to hang them up. I am a big baseball fan and everyone talks about the New York Yankees and their Murderer's Row. To this day, they still compare them to current lineups and always reflect. I was a part of that Murder's Row in ECW and you guys have a lot of expectations that only time can tell."

Time will tell alright. In the open letter, Tommy Dreamer specifically addressed Vince McMahon's passion in the sport and asked him to look inside himself to see the same in the ECW. The fan in me wants the old ECW back or some part of it. The fans have spoken loud and clear about it. It's even shown in the ratings, but bottom line, it's all up to Vince if the ECW succeeds or not.

THE NEW INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION

History was made this past Monday on RAW where a certain Italian fan beat Umaga for the Intercontinental title. Wikipedia and WWE.com have given a little bit of info about him. You fans know him as the new WWE Intercontinental Champion Santino Marella.

His co-workers and friends at the CANUSA Group know him as Anthony Carelli. CANUSA is the popular publishing house which features the premiere men's fitness magazine Maximum Fitness magazine, the men's magazine American Curves, the bodybuilding publication Muscle Mag International, women's fitness magazine Oxygen and other publications within the fitness industry.Your friends say hello.
