The 10th Day News Report for 5.23.07
Posted by Leonard Hayhurst on 05.23.2007

MAILBAG

The move you are thinking of is the Alley-Oop. if you have played the Smackdown game you'd know what i was talking about. Tori(the DX tori) used to use it as her finisher and the Big Show occasionally did it. it's where they lift their opponent up into the Powerbomb position but instead toss them overhead so they land on their face.
-John

Thanks for clearing up the proper name of what a face first jackknife powerbomb would be. I'm still impressed by the bump from such a small girl.

What's up dude. I was actually thinking perhaps since Armando isn't there Umaga would snap and attack the Mcmahons rather than give Vince the win again.
-John

This is in response to my thoughts in my Judgment Day preview. I think Umaga turning on the McMahons and going face is a good idea and would help prolong the character's limited shelf life. One might remember when Kamala turned faced after years of being a similar styled heel. It probably would have made a better storyline than Vince lamely claiming he was still ECW champion because he personally wasn't pinned. However, that should lead to the big singles blow off I predicted in the preview for One Night Stand.

NEWS AND NOTES

-In your online Heat report Chuck Palumbo ran over Charlie Haas. Santino Marella beat Shelton Benjamin. The IC champ is almost curtain jerking Heat. How sad is that? Dan Rodman jobbed out Eugene. The Highlanders went over some dudes. In the dark main event of RAW John Cena lost to the Great Khali by DQ after a low blow. Credit: PWInsider.com

-Smackdown taping results, light on the spoilers but heavy on taste.

*Matt Hardy vs. The Miz
*Mark Henry promo

-Former WWE developmental territory Deep South Wrestling is currently reorganizing and going over plans to continue on without WWE support according to the announcement of management. The Heartland Wrestling Association is still ticking today after losing WWE backing. Credit: DSW press release

-WWE won a Gold Award for the WWE Fan Axxxess tour last year by Corporate Event magazine. The magazine is devoted to successful corporate marketing strategies. I'd make fun of that, but it's too boring. Credit: press release

-Lou D'Angeli, Melissa Seffens and Stephan Moore have been hired as a new part of WWE's marketing team. D'Angeli will work on live event promotions and marketing. Seffens will serve as a liaison to various networks in the promoting of WWE. Moore will work on the marketing and promotion of WWE merchandise. Man, I thought the above item was boring. Credit: press release

-WWE's Socko Energy drink which hit Wal-Mart shelves last week will most likely sponsor an upcoming pay per view. Probably a bad one. Credit: PWInsider.com

-WWE.com has photos up of the Great Khali's foot under the ropes at Backlash to further the angle that he unfairly lost. If only you could take photos to some kind of shop and doctor them to show what you want them to. Credit: WWE.com

-RAW this week did a 3.7 rating. Average for recent broadcasts. Credit: WrestlingObserver.com

-WWE Shop Zone has started taking pre-orders for the best of the ladder match DVD and the most powerful families in wrestling DVD. I hope the Mulkey brothers are on that.
Credit: WWE.com

-Wrestlemania 23 hit shelves yesterday. The three disc special set is the one you want with the Hall of Fame ceremony and bonus matches and promos not from the show itself. Purchasing the disc at various stores comes with some additional perks. Best Buy was offering a trading card set. Wal-Mart is giving a bonus DVD of Shawn Michaels from the vault. Circuit City was promising a film cell of Roddy Piper. Blockbuster Video was promoting a free exclusive DVD, but did not say what. Probably bum fights or something. Credit: PWInsider.com

-Announced as of right now for One Night Stand is (and there are spoilers):
John Cena vs. the Great Khali for the WWE Title Falls Count Anywhere
Vince McMahon vs. Bobby Lashley for the ECW Title in a street fight
Edge vs. Batista for the World Title
Credit: PWInsider.com

-Gregory Helms underwent neck fusion surgery yesterday and should be out for up to a year. What will the cruiserweight division do without him? Actually, will anyone notice that he's gone? Credit: PWInsider.com

-It's not Shawn Michaels' noggin that is giving him trouble as storylines suggest, but rather his knee. He's scheduled this week to have surgery. There is hope he will be back by Survivor Series and he is being written out of current summer plans for the company. I was looking forward to that SummerSlam surf off with the Great Khali. Credit: WrestlingObserver.com

-WWE has cut Henry Godwin who was working in Deep South wrestling and had some dark matches. With the Freakin' Deacon and Ray Gordy basically playing the Godwinns they probably figured they didn't need him. OVW diva Angel Williams was also cut. Of the main roster Scotty 2 Hotty, Nick Mitchell formerly of the Spirit Squad and Kevin Thorn's paramour Ariel were also let go. Ariel I dug. Come wrestle in Ohio. The rest of you guys, I don't care so much. It's being rumored that Stephanie McMahon is behind all the recent talent cuts as awhile back John Laurenaitis as head of talent was made directly responsible to her. Credit: PWInsider.com

-Mick Foley is currently filming footage for his new A&E series "Wrestling My Family." The series has yet to be picked up, but this is the channel that gave Gene Simmons a show. Credit: PWInsider.com

-Kane defeated William Regal in a dark match for Judgment Day on Sunday. Ooo, sorry I missed that one. Credit: PWInsider.com

-Many Comcast subscribers didn't receive Judgment Day until about half hour into the show due to technical difficulties and will therefore be given the replay for free. Comcast subscribers were ‘eh' on the matter. Credit: PWInsider.com

-The Condemned finished 23rd in theaters last weekend dropping another 66% in box office down to about $100,000. It's total so far is just a shade over $7 million. And yet WWE television still plugs the hell out of it. Let it go. Credit: Variety

-TNT and USA Network tied in the overall network ratings for last week at a 2.2. USA 's strongest programming was RAW while TNT was boosted by the NBA Playoffs. Credit: Multichannelnews.com

-According to a recent interview by Victoria for the Louisville Courier-Journal, she has sold the pizza place she owned locally and has also signed a new three year deal with WWE. I guess they figure they need one woman on the roster who can actually wrestle that they can job out to the latest Playboy bunny. Put Vickie in Playboy, I'd buy it. Actually I would just scope the pictures on the ‘net. Who buys magazines anymore? Credit: PWInsider.com

-Ivan Koloff was in a car accident over the weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina and broke six ribs. Credit: PWInsider.com

-Joanie Laurer, formerly Chyna, is pitching a reality show to Oxygen. Originally she went to Vh-1 where she had been involved in the "Surreal Life" series, but they passed. This is the network that gave Flavor Flav rejects a show. Oxygen is into strong women, sure, but not like Chyna I don't think. Laurer was scheduled to appear on the Howard Stern radio show this morning. Credit: PWInsider.com

-Ring of Honor's first pay per view, Respect is Earned, will run on ppv outlets this coming July and August. It will debut on DISH on Sunday July 1st, on TVN Sunday July 8th at 8 pm and on InDemand on Friday July 20th at 8 pm with several replays on all networks. Credit: ROHWrestling.com

ECW THOUGHTS

-Snitsky works his way up the jobber chain to a genuine midcarder in Tommy Dreamer. Dreamer is another guy that could put Snitsky over well if given the opportunity, but it's a glorified squash. Snitsky goes to work Dreamer over with a chair and RVD saves with a Van Daminator. Rumor is that RVD is on his way out the door, so guess who is putting Snitsky over at One Night Stand?

-The slunts plug the Timbaland video and air it. Lord knows we can't waste time with wrestling on an hour program. It will probably do better than The Condemned. It's in the visual style of Sin City, which would have been more relevant two years ago.

-Kevin Thorn jobs out Wyatt Laura, or something like that. Styles and Tazz spin the absence of Ariel that he cut her loose so he can really strike out on his own. Doesn't really work since he had her prior to joining the New Breed. Thorn wins with a rope assisted stunner, christened the Original Sin.

-Elijah Burke and Marcus Cor Von talk strategy in the back. Burke chews out Striker for causing his loss at Judgment Day. He tells Striker to go prove himself against one of the Majors Brothers. If he doesn't win, there will be a "problem." Could you be a little more specific, like "kick your stupid ass."

-Striker takes on Brett Majors in a match that couldn't curtain jerk WCW Worldwide. Striker wins when all signs pointed to him losing to advance the storyline.

-RVD and CM Punk team up to face Cor Von and Burke. I smell a swerve. There must be something wrong with my nose, because Van Dam and Punk keep together. The heels are disqualified when Cor Von as the illegal man wouldn't get out of the ring. He hits the Pounce on Punk and RVD just because he can. Unite the tag belts, put them on Black Power and let them run for about five years.

EWR ON 411

Smackdown for 5.24.07

Carlito hits the Backcracker on Chris Cage and goes to the top rope. Jamie Satin jumps on the apron to distract the referee. Triple H jumps on the apron and nails Carlito in the kidneys with the sledgehammer. Carlito falls on the top turnbuckle. Cage-Breaker off the top wins.

He bans Evolution from ringside for the later matches (from Mathew). Triple H laughs. What is Piper going to do? Fine them, fire them, suspend them. No. Any interference from Evolution and Triple H never, ever gets a shot at any title in WWE for the rest of his career. Triple H gulps and turns white. Segment Rating: 71%

Match Rating: 72%

Raven takes the ring and slumps in the corner. He's defeated everyone on Smackdown for the Hardcore title. It's pathetic. It also bores him. So if there is one person in the back with a bit of backbone left that he hasn't humiliated come out now. Randy Orton appears. Raven laughs. Orton challenging him is like one of these fat, pasty white fans out in the audience who gets sore thumbs playing Madden on their Xbox entering the NFL. Orton retorts that Raven wanted any challenger and he doesn't see anyone else out there. Raven tells Orton that he needs to win some hardcore matches first to prove he's worthy. Orton will face anyone Raven wants him to on Velocity in a hardcore match. Raven picks his old foe Rhyno.

Segment Rating: 74%

Rey Mysterio comes out with Johnny Kashemere. Since Evolution isn't allowed out with him he's taken on the job of Kashmere's second. Mysterio slams the mat, yells to the referee, massages Kashmere's shoulders on the outside, gives him advice and generally lays it on thick. Burchill gets tired of Mysterio's showboating and planchas out onto him. Kashmere follows, but Paul moves and he nails Rey too. Kahsmere throws him into the ring. He slingshots in with a leg drop. Spinebuster sets up the C4 for the pin. Mysterio jumps Burchill post match. Punk comes out for the save and then draws out Jericho. (parts from Mathew)
Match Rating: 82%

Roddy Piper comes out again. Jericho and Mysterio wants rematches for their former titles. Hell yeah they do. Piper grants them, but this time Burchill and Punk gets= to choose the match stips. They protest. Piper points out that when they were allowed to pick the stips, they lost. Burchill and Punk will announce the match stips next week.

(twist from Mathew idea)
Match Rating: 65%

Medusa is beside herself after the match. She stands there covered in chocolate and screams. She took part in this ‘match' if you want to call it that. She hopes all the depraved fans enjoyed it. She challenges Stacy to a submission match next week. This is a wrestling company, so let's wrestle.

Trish slaps him.

Marissa has Harry Smith and Sonya Blackhawk. Don't think Smith is going to let all the women do the work tonight. He's going to wrestle his usual great match and then give twice that to Brent Albright on RAW tomorrow night in the King of the Ring tournament. Blackhawk enjoys watching her man in the ring.
