The Caribbean Corner 6.17.07: The WWE Supplemental Draft
Posted by Armando Rodriguez on 06.17.2007

I know I am usually the Puerto Rico Wrestling writer and very few times write about the WWE scene, but I am a huge WWE fan and came out very disappointed from the results of the WWE Draft. I wanted to do a column on the draft before it happened, but unfortunately I did not have the time. So I have decided to write my thoughts on the whole live draft and about some moves that should happen during the Supplemental Draft this Sunday. Let's just summarize my thoughts on the live draft.

Moving Benoit to ECW was a good idea. I feel Benoit will be involved in the main event picture, can carry the young guys to very good matches and will allow CM Punk, Cor Von, Burke and Striker to learn from his experience. Plus, I bet he can even carry a guy like Kevin Thorne to a good match. But, they totally screwed the way they teased at a Lashley/Benoit feud with the finish of their match. I think that the fans where legitimately interested in a feud between the two, a feud that wont happen after the moving Lashley to Raw. And I bet Lashley would have learned a lot from working with Benoit. Plus, Lashley was on Raw anyway, so it doesn't make much sense to move him unless they go back to enforcing the brand split (no more Matt Hardy on Raw, etc.).

I am torn between whether moving Flair to Smackdown was a good idea. I do think it is, it will provide Flair with new match-ups, but at the same time, we never got a real conclusion to his feud with Carlito and unless Carlito goes to Smackdown(which would be a bad move I think) we where robbed of a finish. On the other hand, Chris Masters to Smackdown is a good idea. He was jobbed to hell on Raw and maybe they can rebuild his credibility on Smackdown where there are more small men for him to beat and look imposing.

Mr. Kennedy to Raw was a horrible idea. They had teased his feud with Edge for so long that it had to happen! But I can understand that they want to keep them away from each other and wait until Wrestlemania. I guess that the fact that Kennedy stood up to Edge made him the defacto babyface and that the WWE wants to keep stalling that turn to when it counts. However, once he comes back, what will he do? As long as he doesn't turn out to be another jobber for Cena, he will be fine. Maybe give him the Intercontinental Title and have him feud with Jeff Hardy over the Swanton Bomb or something.

The rest of the moves made little sense. Guys like Khali and Boogeyman are novelties, not to be taken seriously. Snitsky will be just another big man for Cena to beat if they play the Hogan formula with him. And Torrie Wilson? Is she so important that it had to happen in the live draft? Unless they did it to tease at something with MVP.

Now, let's think about moves that need to happen during the supplemental draft. It is hard to predict, because we don't know if this will be random or if the GM's will be doing the trades.

1. Michelle McCool to Raw.

Miss McCool has decent wrestling ability and she is forced to sit on Smackdown and compete with the non-wrestling divas. Plus, they need as many capable women as they can because we know that outside of Victoria and Mickie James, there is not much else.

2. Carlito to ECW

This has to happen. The face turn totally ruined it for Carlito. I feel that even if he beats Santino Marella(and what a lame feud that would be) and goes on to feud with someone else, his reputation is seriously damaged. On ECW he will be surrounded by young guys and feuds with CM Punk and Benoit a step away. Let him improve his ring work, regain his confidence and then maybe a year from now, you have him return to any of the major brands.

3. Val Venis to ECW

Let's face it, in Raw he is nothing short of a jobber. Adding him to ECW might also resurrect his career while allowing the young stars to learn from him. Whatever he goes on to do at ECW should be better than having a talented individual like Val sitting backstage or jobbing in three minutes.

4. The Major Bros. to either, Raw or Smackdown

I have not seen enough of the Majors to determine whether they will be really good or really bad, but ECW doesn't have a tag team division and it makes sense to have tag teams where there are titles to chase and other teams to face.

5. Eugene to ECW or Smackdown

Once again, it doesn't really matter. It's just moving a guy who has done and faced everyone he could in his current brand to some other place where he can get fresh matchups. Either way is fine, but ECW makes more sense. Maybe they can "evil retarded wrestler" gimmick again, or maybe they can finally destroy the Eugene gimmick and gives us Nick Dinsmore.

6. The Highlanders to Smackdown

They have been jobbed to death after a solid initial run. I suggest a move to Smackdown and a heel turn, more akin to The Sheepherders than to the Bushwhackers and maybe their careers can be saved from eternal job-dom.

7. Super Crazy to Smackdown

Yes I know he was moved to Raw not long ago, but it makes sense to have him on Smackdown and give Chavo a credible challenger. His "Super and Crazy" bits where funny and he is more over than any cruiserweight not named Chavo Guerrero.

8. Teddy Long to Raw

Just so they finish the stupid romance storyline with some payoff. Teddy can become the Raw GM in the absence of Mr. McMahon and maybe jave a shared authority with Coach just to make things interesting. If the GM's themselves are supposed to organize the trades, have Vickie use the power Teddy gave him to send him packing and turn her heel. But knowing WWE, they will then say Krystal was Vickie's lesbian lover or something.

9. Kane to ECW

He is sort of a sci-fi character and he can become a force to be reckoned with in ECW, instead of the big guy that jobs to bigger guys(see Henry, Mark).

10. Trinity to Raw

Yet another move to add a female wrestler to the Raw roster.

Those are the ones I would do. I originally considered moving Umaga to Smackdown (since Cena basically killed his credibility), but then Raw would be the weaker brand I guess. Also, I considered moving Kevin Thorne somewhere else, but he would probably be lost in the shuffle. This are the moves that I think make the most sense. Let's see how the supplemental draft turns out and then expect another column in which I break down the moves. Until next time and don't forget that we really appreciate your feedback.
