411’s Independent Draft Spectacular 6.18.07: Introduction and Rounds 1-5
Posted by Larry Csonka on 06.18.2007

Introduction:

Welcome one and all to the first ever 411 Independent Draft Spectacular! It is draft fever in the wrestling world and over the course of the last week, things have gotten even more hectic! You see, with the vast resources 411 has we have provided some of our staff with the monetary needs to go out and purchase the Independent Wrestling Organization of their choosing. All of the paper work is done and these men now own these companies. But now that they own the companies, what will they do with them? Well, we have taken all of the great talent out there and declared them free agents! In the way WWE and all of sports do we are holding the first ever 15-Round 411 Independent Draft Spectacular! Today you will be provided with a press release from all of the owners with an explanation of their promotion and possible goals. And then you will be treated to the first FIVE rounds of our draft! Next Monday we will do rounds 6-15 and then, you will be treated to the first shows of these new promotions! Sit back and relax as you witness the evolution of pro wrestling right here on 411Mania.com!

The Rules:

  • For the 411Mania Independent Draft, the following rules and guidelines were agreed upon to both keep the playing field level as well as force owners to make their selections carefully. All draft picks are subject to the following requirements and limitations:

    1. The draft will take place over a period of 15 rounds with each owner receiving one pick per round.

    2. Order of selection will reverse each round so that the company that selects first in the first round would select last in the second round and so on.

    3. Ring of Honor, which it was decided had the deepest original talent pool entering the draft, will receive the first selection to compensate for what will undoubtedly be a massive talent loss over the course of the draft.

    4. Each company will be allowed to use one pick to draft a tag team as a unit. To be eligible to be drafted as a team, the two wrestlers must be primarily recognizable as a member of that unit.

    5. International talent (defined as any performer from outside the United States & Canada) may be drafted, but must have wrestled three times in the United States or Canada in 2007. Bookings through the end of June 2007 that have yet to occur will count towards the three required appearances, as will participation in Wrestling Society X.

    6. Talent under contract with World Wrestling Entertainment or Total Nonstop Action is ineligible to be drafted.

    7. Any talent that goes un-drafted will be considered a Free Agent and will be eligible to appear for any and all companies.

    Press Releases:

Ring of Honor (ROH) sent out the following Press Release today: From the Desk of Samuel Berman, new owner of Ring of Honor: There are a lot of different ways that this draft could go, but rest assured that when it's all said and done Ring of Honor will put on the outstanding cards that fans have come to expect. I will tell you right out of the gate that my top priority is continuing ROH's commitment to state-of-the-art tag team excellence, though I guarantee that every match on our shows will be of the utmost quality. New and old fans alike are going to be impressed with what they see in the new Ring of Honor.

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) sent out the following Press Release today: From the Desk of Bayani Domingo, new owner of Pro Wrestling Guerrilla: After being such a huge PWG fan over the years I couldn't pass up the opportunity to buy out the PWG Six and take over full ownership of the company. I first want to assure all of the PWG fans that while some of the faces may change, the overall appeal and vibe of PWG will remain in tact. Also we've placed our "Franchise Player" tag on Mama Talwar so you know the Nachos and Hot Dogs aren't going anywhere. We here at PWG still aim to bring you the best athletes and wrestlers in the world while maintaining the uniquely fun experience that only PWG can give you. Our aim is to put together the most diverse and awe inspiring line up in all of Indy wrestling with technicians, high flyers, great personalities, and tag teams from all over the world. Hell, we've even sent talent scouts to Japan to recruit some Ninjas….Ninjas son, NINJAS!! Pro Wrestling Guerrilla promises that we will not be happy with being just the best Indy Company on the West Coast, but our aim is to take over the country and certain parts of Canada (but not the French side). So make sure to tell all of your friends that PWG is coming to their house, busting down the door, dry humping their mom, kicking their dog, and ROCKING THEIR FACES!! …Or just buy a DVD and save us the trouble. Your call.

Full Impact Pro (FIP) sent out the following Press Release today: From the Desk of Michael Bauer, new owner of Full impact Pro: In the 411 Independent Wrestling Draft, Full Impact Pro has come out of the early stages of this draft exactly where we want to be thanks to some great early picks. With Nigel McGuinness and Takeshi Morishima headlining our main events, the FIP is fully poised to have one of the best starting main events out there, which will also BJ Whitmer also in the mix. Jack Evans and Matt Sydal will be the start of a great second division, which will showcase the highflying side of wrestling and become the basis of the FIP Heritage Title. The rest of this draft is sure too bring even more talent to Full Impact Pro as we look to dominate the Indy scene with one of a kind matches and talent. In the end, I expect to have great talent and a deep roster for both divisions. A deep roster that will keep the fans of Full Impact Pro happy and on their feet from bell to bell.

CHIKARA PRO sent out the following Press Release today: From the Desk of Matt Adamson, new owner of Chikara Pro: We are a cutting-edge independent professional wrestling promotion whose goal is to have the most fun possible with the wide range of fun there is to be had in professional wrestling. We will set the standard high for performance in and out of the ring. Chikara Pro will feature a wide range of styles of wrestling as well as a wide array of characters from the serious to the wild to the completely insane. There will also be a focus on international talent from around the globe and the top North American talent. The point of Chikara pro is to allow for the evolution and progression of profession wrestling, both as entertainment and as a form of artistic expression. This can only be done by allowing the creative minds behind the talent to let loose and take the reigns. The rest of these promotions better beware, because if you're looking for a good time and the best wrestling around, you need to look no further than Chikara Pro

The Universal Wrestling Federation (UWF) sent out the following Press Release today: From the Desk of Larry Csonka, new owner of the Universal Wrestling Federation: On behalf of LTC Enterprises L.L.C. I am proud to announce that Larry and Christi Csonka have purchased the UWF from Mr. Hermie Sadler. Upon the purchase of this promotion the couple also went into negotiations with the Watts family and have secured the rights to the name, fonts and presentation of the "Universal Wrestling Federation." The goal of the Csonka family is to bring back episodic TV, solid wrestling, and an old school vibe with a 2007 presentation to the world. We will be looking to draft and sign people with TV experience, that have been champions, that know what it takes to succeed and also to find some talent that has yet to break on the scene, but has all of the traits that we are looking for.

Mrs. Christi Csonka will be the CEO of the promotion and run the day-to-day operations for the company, Mr. Csonka will have the title of CFO while Mr. Geoffrey Eubanks will run all production and talent aspects as well as book the promotion. The Championship Committee, who decides who will get the title shots as well as make up the initial championship tournament will be made up of the following wrestling experts: Dr. S.T. Bernard, Dr. Kay Fabinya, Dr. Chuck U. Farley, Dr. Harry C. Beaver, Dr. Paige Turner, Dr. Willie B. Hardigan and Dr. Anna Prentice.

We plan to provide you with interesting TV, good wrestling and no bullshit. We know that many fans have been discouraged in what they have seen on TV in recent years, and have started to flock to the Independent scene. Well, look no further as we will be that answer! You'll see former champions, former major stars and the talent of tomorrow all on one show and competing for your pleasure! Once our draft is complete, you will see the image that the UWF wants to hold. The Universal Wrestling Federation: No Fake Deaths, the Way You Want it to Be!

IWA: Mid-South (IWAMS) sent out the following Press Release today: From the Desk of Ari Berenstein, new owner of IWA: Mid-South: IWA: Mid South is an independent company that works the states of Indiana and Illinois. A great many of today's independent, ROH, TNA and even WWE wrestlers made their mark here first. CM Punk. Colt Cabana. Alex Shelley. Jimmy Jacobs. Chris Hero. Jimmy Rave. Austin Aries. Matt Sydal. Delirious. The list goes on and on. Not only did IWA: MS bring to the fans these future stars, but they also brought great wrestling matches, from a technical wrestling standpoint and also with a noteworthy light heavyweight division. Not only did IWA: MS host great matches, but they are also foremost in the violent style of blood filled hardcore brutality.

In taking on the role of owner/booker of IWA: MS, I have three major goals—1) Give IWA: MS the larger and broader exposure it deserves by bringing back some of the successful alumni of the promotion working on the independent scene. Also by bringing in new and important wrestling talent, fans are going to see fresh matches with quality wrestlers. When a fan sees the wrestlers on the card, they know these are guys who can go. I'm going to bring in technical wrestlers and powerhouse wrestlers and we're going to see them fight it out. Power vs. Power. Technical vs. Technical. Power vs. Technical. We're going all out. 2) Retain current IWA: MS fans where possible by keeping some of the current talent, the buzzword wrestlers and fan favorites alike. Certain returning talents are going to stir up some controversy, but either way, fan reaction will be passionate. 3) Retain and use the Hardcore style matches as special attractions that will entertain and amaze fans. I won't go so far as to say that the "Box of Glass / Light Tubes / Tables Inferno" style of ultra-hardcore will stick around in my promotion, but the wrestlers will be going at it, rough and ready. When all is said and done, I will give the fans some great hardcore war dream matches that will satisfy the appetite for violence.

The best hardcore matches. The best powerhouse style matches. IWA: MS favorites, past and present. The debut of quality big name wrestlers from the independent scene. If you don't already, by the end of this draft you're going to know the name IWA: MS. We mean business.

    THE DRAFT:

    ROUND ONE:

With the 1st pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Ring of Honor selects…

Jay & Mark Briscoe: As far as I'm concerned, the Briscoe Brothers are the best thing going in Independent wrestling today. They consistently bring their best to every match and have stolen the show for countless promotions this year alone. In particular, their match against Motor City Machine Guns of Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin in ROH continues to hold the top spot on my Match of the Year ballot. When starting a promotion, you want to have names that wrestling fans will pay to see. When Jay & Mark are on the card, you can have them face off with two green local workers and STILL have a main event quality match up. That's what real talent is. MAN UP!

With the 2nd pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, PWG selects...

Bryan Danielson: Best In The World. What more do I have to say? Danielson brings legitimacy and potential **** matches every time out as THE most recognizable single Indy wrestler on the face of the planet. With him in the Main Event you can guarantee that your Fed will always manage to sell more than a few tickets. Right now Danielson is the one true Marquee player amongst a group of obvious 2nd place finishers. Besides, Danielson has a way of making everyone he works with that much better. I hope no one else was counting on him slipping in the draft because...IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!!

With the 3rd pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, FIP selects...

Nigel McGuinness: While Danielson is well known around everywhere, I would still take Nigel McGuinness over him. Nigel is without a doubt the complete package in Indy wrestling. He can put on a great match with just about anyone and has the size that meshes well with both the small speedster and the bigger powerhouse. But more importantly, he has the look of a superstar and the charisma to match. That is something that cannot be bought and makes Nigel the centerpiece of the new FIP.

With the 4th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Chikara Pro selects...

KENTA: This guy has star written all over him. He has main evented in Japan in front over 13,000 people. He has a fantastic move set to the American fans and can work with just about anybody and make it interesting. He can draw in fans and put on memorable matches. He also has a superstar look that nobody can deny. It doesn't seem right for me not to draft somebody from Japan first. Puro, after all, is my passion as far as pro wrestling is concerned.

With the 5th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, the UWF selects...

Roderick Strong: Credibility and the championship pedigree are things that you need when starting a new promotion. As we launch the new look UWF, we pulled a coup and stole the current FIP World Champion Roderick Strong and brought him to the UWF. Strong have been one of the most improved guys in the last 3-years and is now a top tier guy, and looking to break from the ROH/FIP stigma, break out on his own and make a true Impact. While the belt will stay with FIP, Strong walks into the promotion and will be in the mix for the first ever UWF Championship.

With the 6th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, IWA: MS selects...

The Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli): Hero coming home. His roots are here and now that his character and abilities have matured and evolved, he will be the centerpiece heel of my promotion. Since we can pick up Claudio Castagnoli in a combo for the first pick, let's reunite The Kings and unleash hell on the unsuspecting heroes of IWA: MS! Claudio can come in and do well against just about everyone and he has one hell of a wacky charisma. Not to mention down the line in the case of a face turn, these two are golden against each other. But for right now, in the NEW IWA: Mid South, KINGS REIGN SUPREME!

    ROUND TWO:

With the 7th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, IWA: MS selects...

Brent Albright: The uncrowned jewel in the remaining pack of top-notch independent workers. Albright has that "it' factor that connects to the crowds. You see it in the ROH shows right now. Albright can work face or heel and tap into that connection. He's a bruiser and a powerhouse but he is also a fierce technician who can go the distance and carry matches deep into the hour. Albright is someone who will fit right at home at the top of the card in IWA: MS and is my "Ace" of the staff.

With the 8th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, the UWF selects...

ICW TEXARKANA TV CHAMPION "Sweet & Sour" Larry Sweeney: Speaking of that championship pedigree and credibility, "Sweet & Sour" Larry Sweeney was a must have for the promotion. Sweeney possesses a ton of charisma, and also brings the TEXARKANA TV TITLE with him, since he claims ownership of it, although the legal team will have to make sure of that. Sweeney has had many battles through these last few years, and with him joining the UWF, other competitors better watch out, or they will be on a one-way trip to Larry-dise. He also could vault right into UWF Title contention.

With the 9th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Chikara Pro selects..

"Lightning" Mike Quakenbush: Would it really make sense for Chikara to exist without Quakenbush? No, it would not, so I have decided to take action and make sure Quack stays right where he belongs. Also, I have to keep some of my core since, as seems to be the case in drafts such as this, I'm getting raped of more talent than anybody else (by percentage at least). Am I really that rapable? Is that even a word?

With the 10th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, FIP selects...

Takeshi Morishima: The Japanese Big Man is the current Ring of Honor champion and will be a great replacement for losing our champion in Roderick Strong. Morishima has worked well in the past with Nigel and those two would be poised for another great run at an opening feud for the gold. The only knock would be that he could have trouble keeping with some of the smaller guys, but that can be worked out.

With the 11th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla selects...

El Generico: OLE!! He's truly the heart and soul of PWG. From day one this guy has steadily improved from "underrated Generic Luchador" to fully recognized charismatic champion. El Generico is also a seasoned tag team wrestler who brings versatility as well as a "plucky babyface" aura about him that fans can really get behind. Although some may consider this a "reach" I knew this was one guy I had to have on the roster that would truly represent the spirit of what this Fed is all about. PWG without El Generico is like an Indy fan without free access to porn. Just sad…very sad.

With the 12th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Ring of Honor selects…

Jimmy Jacobs: Even as recently as the beginning of 2007, Jacobs wouldn't have sniffed the second round of a draft like this. That's not to say that he wasn't already an immensely talented performer, just that it would have been unrealistic to characterize him as a main event presence worthy of being a company's first singles pick. Not anymore. As a result not only of his in-ring work during the final stages of his career-defining feud with former partner BJ Whitmer, but also his recent promo work (both on DVD releases and online video updates), Jacobs has cemented himself as one of the most well-rounded performers in all of Independent wrestling.

    ROUND THREE:

With the 13th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Ring of Honor selects…

Delirious: This is the first of what will be a series of back-to-back picks for me throughout this draft. I wanted to take someone who would compliment Jacobs' newfound ultra-serious character, but also be able to mesh with him in the ring if need be. Delirious, the consummate combination of comedy and solid ring work, fits that description more than anyone I could think of. Delirious has worked hard to establish himself as more than a curtain-jerking comedy sideshow, culminating in his submission victory over then-ROH World Champion Bryan Danielson in 2006. Can Delirious be the top man in a promotion? I don't know, but I'm willing to find out.

With the 14th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla selects...

The Havana Pitbulls: The best tag team left after the Briscoes and KoW were taken. Besides that Rocky Romero is one of my favorite Indy guys right now and Reyes will be fine on his own as a singles wrestler as I've seen more charisma out of him in a PWG ring in the past year than in all of his RoH tenure. I was tempted to take a Puro team but in reality I know I would only be able to fly them in on occasion based on PWG's realistic budget so I figured I'd go with a cheaper alternative that can be PWG 1st and foremost as well as a very popular tag team with SoCal roots.

With the 15th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, FIP selects...

Jack Evans: Tough choice here as I really wanted Delirious here, but I guess I can settle on Jack Evans, one of the more dynamic Indy wrestlers out there. The guy can do it all and keep the crowd in awe for an entire match. You get him in there with the right opponent and you get pure non-stop action that will keep the fans wanting more.

With the 16th Pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Chikara Pro selects...

Naomichi Marufuji: I'm just a huge sucker for the puro guys, it's that simple. Marufuji is a former GHC Heavyweight Champion and that is no small matter. I believe that makes him the most high profile wrestler available in this draft and I'll take him. He and KENTA can show the Americans how to wrestle and he is obviously a top contender anywhere in the world. Why wasn't he picked already?

With the 17th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, the UWF selects..

Lance Storm: UWF was shocked that this late in the draft the man from Calgary, Alberta Canada was still not selected by any other promotion. The man is a proven champion around the world and since departing World Wrestling Entertainment has had time to rest up injuries and start his own wrestling school. Lance will be a major player with the UWF, and we are also proud to announce that the UWF has signed an exclusive agreement with the Storm Wrestling Academy to become our minor league affiliate.

With the 18th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, IWA: MS selects...

NECRO BUTCHER: IWA:MS is known in part for its hardcore division, and I want to keep that aspect alive in some form. NECRO Butcher is a controversial figure. Not everyone loves him and some people hate him, but a lot of fans on the independent scene have come around to him especially in the last year. Necro is a fan favorite in IWA:MS and I'm keeping him around as a heck of a protagonist in the Hardcore, violent style matches. He certainly isn't Michelangelo in the ring, but can take a heck of licking and keeps on ticking. He's also fun for the kids. He can have an incredible series of hardcore wars with the next guy on my list.

    ROUND FOUR:

With the 19th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, IWA: MS selects...

The Homicidal, Suicidal, Genocidal, Death-Defying SABU: Newly released from WWE, one of the ORIGINATORS of hardcore wrestling will finally make his way to IWA: MS. Sabu has a few miles on the road and the beside manner of a Harlem sewer rat making its way through the NYC subway system, but he still brings a lot to the table. He's a money draw AND he's a match made in hardcore heaven (or is it hell?) for Necro Butcher. Feature these guys in a dream death match and IT'S ON! I'll also remember to never let him near a mic, and I will always keep a spare set of his gear stored with the ring truck. Just in case...

With the 20th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, the UWF selects...

The Backseat Boys (Trent Acid and Johnny Kashmere): The UWF is a promotion that wants to have a model similar to its predecessor, that being the Bill Watts ran Mid-South/UWF Promotion. Watts loved and used Tag Team Wrestling to make a lot of money and we here at the new UWF will do the same. With that being said, we are proud to announce that Trent Acid and Johnny Kashmere, better known to fans as The Backseat Boys have been selected to join the promotion. They have reunited and been awesome together in PWU, and look to revitalize tag team wrestling inside the UWF.

With the 21st pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Chikara Pro selects...

Super Dragon: Super Dragon, though partly retired is one of the most talented wrestlers in the independent scene in North American today. He can have extraordinary matches with KENTA, Marifuji and Quack and scare the piss out of the crowd. I couldn't pass him up.

With the 22nd pick in the Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, FIP selects...

BJ Whitmer: BJ Whitmer is another bruiser who can fit right in with Nigel and Morishima for some nice knock em out type matches. Plus, the guy is loyal to whoever he works for, so you never have to worry about him flaking out on you at the wrong time.

With the 23rd pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, PWG selects...

Davey Richards: Davey is a "Heat" machine now that he's gone to his Heel-ish ways and has grown by leaps and bounds since his start in PWG. Now an important part of the PWG roster it's a no-brainer to take such a versatile high-flyer and striker as a cornerstone of the roster. He has been able to keep up with just about every grappler and every style he's encountered and I have a feeling that he'll be THE top Heel in PWG for years to come. Oh, just don't call him an oompa loompa.

With the 24th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Ring of Honor selects…

"Photogenic" Chris Bosh: I'm a big fan of Bosh's promo work, but then again, there are lots of guys whose mic work I enjoy. If you're curious why I'm drafting Bosh in this slot, then you've clearly forgotten the fact that I have back-to-back picks every time out. Forget the fact that as a singles wrestler Bosh won the first Battle of Los Angeles Tournament in PWG, this pick is all about what I'm planning to have main event my first show. Not sure what I'm leading to yet? Wait just a second…

    ROUND FIVE:

With the 25th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Ring of Honor selects…

"The Professional" Scott Lost: Is it clear now? With each of us only allowed one tag team selection, I'm forced to burn two picks on Arrogance. I say it's worth it, as Bosh & Lost are amongst the top teams on the Independent scene, though still something of an undiscovered duo to a lot of fans. They're the perfect foils for the Briscoes in the tag team ranks, but are also able to hold their own in singles competition. Arrogance will be major players in the new Ring of Honor. I guarantee it.

With the 26th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, PWG selects...

PAC: "The Man Gravity Forgot", but not PWG. One half of the PWG tag champs and in my opinion the most exciting high flyer in Indy wrestling TODAY. PAC has shown a willingness to do whatever it takes to entertain the fans as well as make his opponent look good. The only downside to this pick is that he might just kill himself in a PWG ring one of these days. I want PWG to not only include the best athletes in the US, but also around the world. I'm fairly sure that wrestling fans in the UK can attest to the fact that PAC is bound for bigger and better things. I think they'll start here in PWG.

With the 27th pick in the Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, FIP selects...

Matt Sydal: Matt Sydal is another fast paced, high impact guy who could match upon match with Evans and never have it get old. The guy knows how to take some sick bumps also and that is always important.

With the 28th Pick in the Independent Wrestling Draft, Chikara Pro selects...

The Iron Saints of Sal & Vito Thomaselli: A great tag team from IWA:MS. They are capable in the ring and have long careers ahead of them.

With the 29th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, the UWF selects...

"THE KING OF ‘FN' OLD SCHOOL" Steve Corino: When starting fresh as we are here in the old school loving UWF, you need someone with credibility. A former world champion, and that man is Steve Corino. A former ECW World Champion, a former NWA World Champion and a former AWA World Champion, Steve brings that championship pedigree to the table. The man has traveled the world and knows what it takes to succeed in the business. He has had wars with many people and he is set to settle back here in the US as the retirement tour is off. Word on the street is that Cornio not only wants UWF gold, but also is looking to re-launch the Extreme Horsemen.

With the 30th pick in the 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, IWA: MS selects...

"Sexy Chucky T", Chuck Taylor: You can't get anymore "IWA:MS" than it's current and longstanding champion. Taylor has charisma to spare and is a heat magnet for the crowd. After all he won CHIKARA's Rey de Voladores (King of High Fliers) Tournament by REFUSING to do aerial moves. There is a lot of evil brilliance (or is that brilliant evil?) within Taylor for angles and vignettes. Also, at his young age there is tons of untapped potential in the ring that can be brought to bear. Taylor's ties with Hero and Claudio are an attractive prospect for future angles.

    Conclusion
And so ends rounds 1 thru 5 of the first ever 411 Independent Draft Spectacular! The six promotions are beginning to take shape, and with the press releases from the new owners most should see where these companies are going. There are 10 rounds to go, which will all go down next week. Who will be chosen, will there be any big name surprises?
