The Best Of The Rest 7.18.07: Volume 5
Posted by Alex Mattis on 07.18.2007
PWG's 4th Birthday Party is coming up, I heard they're asking for a new bike. The summer of tournaments continues. Good Times, Great Memories, and more here on the Best Of The Rest.
Welcome back to the Best of The Rest. Today I talk ROH, PWG, and probably some other stuff. Enjoy
A Year Of Tournament's:
With The Young Lion's Cup and Best Of The Best, which Joker won by the way, in the books our next stop on the year of totally super awesome Indy tournaments is the "Race To The Top" tourney on July 27th and 28th. Although there are always annual shows like the TPI and BOLA but with the addition of the "Race To The Top" and given the ridiculously stacked natural of TPI and BOLA, and don't even count out the Super 8, this has turned into a year of tournaments. With Chuck Taylor and Joker being the first big victors of this year of tournaments. Who will race to the top of ROH next weekend? Alex Mattis hopes that Chris Hero wins the tournament, but it looks Delirious or Brent Albright might be a safer bet, it would help Albright as he needs a world of momentum going into his ROH title match against Morishima at Death Before Dishonor V, thus bringing an end to the month of July. Closing out the month of August will be PWG's Battle Of Los Angeles. All the participants have been announced and I thought it was going to be difficult to top the set of wrestlers from last year, but it seems that they have outdone themselves on this one. Moving along to the end of September the Ted Petty Invitation will go down in Midlothian, IL. This tourney to me has the best line up of wrestlers and promises to be an amazing show. The only first round match announced so far is Low Ki Vs. Samoa Joe, I mean come on! How can this show not shape up to be astounding? I am very exciting for what lays ahead on the Indy trail, as this promises to be one of the best series of great and diverse shows in recent memory. Can anyone pull a Davey Richards and win two or even three of these huge tournaments? One, two, three, or four Indy superstars will cement their spots by the end of '07.
Upcoming Show Preview: PWG's Four Year Anniversary Show:
Pro Wrestling Guerrilla will celebrate its 4th birthday on July 29th with a big show, and a BIG showdown for the PWG Title. Featured on the card is, what should be, an excellent tag team contest pitting the PWG Tag Team champions (Pac & Roderick Strong) against The Briscoes in a 2 out of 3 falls match. Jay & Mark have been establishing a reputation of winning this type of matches 2-0, they defeated Aries & Strong as well as the King's Of Wrestling in such fashion. Can they do the same to "The Man That Gravity Forgot" and "The Messiah Of The BackBreaker"? In an absolute clash of wrestling styles, Kevin Steen will do battle with the Necro Butcher. I honestly do not know what to expect out of this one, but it certainly has grabbed my attention. Tempers will flare and heads may roll in an unsanctioned street fight between Scorpio Sky and Joey Ryan. Elsewhere Austin Aries will face Rocky Romero and Davey Richards will square off with Fergal Devitt. And in the highly anticipated match for the PWG Tile, the reigning and defending champ El Generico will put the strap on the line against the "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson. Much like Steen-Necro, this is a contrast of styles, but I still think it will be a hell of a match and possibly a sleeper of the year. El Generico ALWAYS brings his A-Game to PWG, and since he won the title he has turned it up even more. Danielson is possibly the best wrestler in the world, and when does he ever have a bad match? Danielson has yet to capture gold in the land of the Guerrilla, could this be the night he does? If not how will Generico put the Dragon down? So far this year, this is one of my most anticipated matches and I cannot wait to see it. The show as a whole should be very solid given the card, but for me the main event is where most of my interest will go.
The Plug Zone:
Who: Ring Of Honor
What: "Good Times, Great Memories"
When: April 28, 2007
Where: Chicago, IL
Why You Want To Own This DVD: Colt Cabana went out with a bang. And his Farwell show was a great one that featured a top contender for the 2007 MOTY. The showed kicked off with a fun six-man mayhem match that featured Mike Quackenbush who earned himself a spot in Ring Of Honor. Takeshi Morishima defended his title in what turned out to be a solid and surprisingly competitive match against SHINGO, many power moves. Roderick Strong and Jack Evans step into the ring for their 6574th match, but like always it's an entertaining battle. Following a match with Erick Stevens, Christopher Daniels cuts an amazing heel promo on the ROH crowd. A must see promo. The Murder City Machine Guns face off against the Brisoces in an amazing MOTY contender. Not much more to be said about it, another must see. All four men in the match continue to get better, and this match showcases the evolution of their skills as well as the amazing heel tactics of the MCMG's. And in the main event Colt Cabana has an emotional Farwell as he does battle with Adam Pearce. Colt's usual in-ring comedy makes the match very fun. This match wasn't a must see or anything, but was still a good sendoff for Cabana, and his post match speech is very heart-felt and enjoyable. For these reasons in more, pick up your copy of "Good Times, Great Memories" soon.
The Stoppage:
-The Iceman is confirmed for a return at UFC 76 as he will face "The Dean Of Mean" Keith Jardine. While this is a dangerous fight because both men will be looking for serious redemption after their KO losses at UFC 71, I don't see Jardine being able to out strike Chuck. Thus we begin Liddell's climb back to the title. When o' when will we get Chuck Liddell Vs. Wanderlei Silva?
-I'm not sure why he was arrested, but I stumbled across Babalu's mug shot and Jesus Christ, he looks like he was dragged to the movies and had to watch License To Wed...
-Nick Diaz will return to the octagon as it was announced that he would be on the Ultimate Fight Night 11 card. I'm hoping he has an impressive victory in this fight. The way he won he UFC contract was rather unimpressive so a KO, TKO, or tap out in this one could help him greatly here. Although with Sean Sherk being the lightweight champ, I'm sure what the reward of excelling in the lightweight division is.
In honor of the return of Goofy Heel Kurt I present *This Week's YouTube Sendoff*
Well that's all for me this week. By the way, I'm stoked for the return of Triple X, some actual interesting booking by TNA. Just throwing that out there.

Everyone have a good week, and remember to think independently.
