Truth B Told 8.23.07: Ties That Bind
Posted by Bayani Domingo on 08.23.2007

It was a hell of a day on Sunday. It wasn't what I had expected at all. I made the 40 min or so drive out to watch some fairly mediocre Indy wrestling in Downey. The place was sweltering as they decided that the open auditorium didn't require any A/C and they'd merely open up the door…to let in the 92 degree weather. Luckily I was able to convince a buddy to make the trip with me. We were convinced to go after another friend had convinced me that it was a "group thing" and it would be nice to all hang out and possibly celebrate my new employment. I knew that was just a clever rouse but I bit anyways, I figured since I had nothing better to do a couple hours of "entertainment" as pitiful as it might be wouldn't be so bad. It didn't turn out that way at all. We met up with 6 other friends already there and about 15 minutes before the bell one of the guys had to go to the hospital to see his mother who was very sick. Two of the other guys went with him. The 5 of us that were left stayed for the rest of the show. It was probably one of the worst shows I've ever seen live. Right after the main event came to a schmozzy DQ finish one of us got a text message. Our friend's mom had passed away after a tough battle with cancer. Sunday…was a hell of a day.

What can you do in a situation like that? My immediate response was that we should probably go see him, but I wasn't even sure if that was the best option. We stood around trying to figure out what to do when I just said that we should just drop by. It's a tough situation to be in because you really don't know what that person might want. There was a question of whether our friend was the kind of person who would just want his space or would want the support. You'd like to think you really know someone who you've known for a few years, but in a case like that it's hard to be sure. We debated it for a bit, but I knew better…we hit the mall first because the gym was absolutely sweltering and then, Orange Julius's in tow, we headed down to Orange County. It felt like one of the longest drives ever as miles and miles of freeway gave way to more miles and miles of freeway, and yet another freeway, and another. We got there and stood around for the better part of 2 hours. Just recapping the horrid show, some PWG talk, just basically bullshitting for the sake of bullshitting. There wasn't really much else we could do, I hope it helped. I'm not sure if it did, but I've got to hope it did if even just a little bit.

We headed out just before it got dark, made a quick stop at a Chili's for dinner and just kind of sat there for a while, trying not to reflect too much of what had happened that day. The one thing I did regret though as I drove back to LA with a friend of mine was that I didn't get the Shanghai Wings. That was about it. Then as I dropped off my buddy something very important dawned on me. For as much as I refer to a core group of like 9 or 10 guys as my "wrestling friends"…I don't need to put a qualifier in front of that second word anymore. They're just my friends. It's weird that something as silly as ‘small packages' and spandex can bear something so important, but it did. I'm thankful for that.

We all have our segments of "friends". We have our "work friends", we have our old "high school friends", maybe even a gym buddy (or…probably not...this is the IWC after all). We all have these friends that we know from a place, or a time in our lives that we feel the need to categorize because it's just easier to do so when all of your friends don't all hang out. I had my "wrestling friends". I would hang out with "work friends" or "college friends" and I'd mention one of them and when they asked who they were I'd say, "oh…they're one of my wrestling friends". It was usually the end to that line of questioning because while a lot of my friends think wrestling is silly, they accept that I love it and don't say much more about it. Deep down I felt ashamed a little because it felt like I was just covering up this segment of people I see very often, but then again…it's more because of the distance and lack of licensed drivers than it is avoiding the mix of my "real friends" and my "wrestling friends". Whenever possible we try to mix the groups, with varying results of course. The funny thing is that if it wasn't for wrestling, probably none of us would have anything else in common and have no reason to hang out. We're all from different backgrounds, cultures, ages, stages in life, pretty much everything except being bi-pedal. But this weekend I more or less came to accept these people as "my friends who like wrestling" and not just my "wrestling friends". Tragedy has a funny way of bringing people together and showing you exactly what kind of a person they are.

Wrestling fans are such a funny animal. Alone they tend to be harmless, but in a herd they can be both excitable and vicious at the same time. We're a group of outcasts who with their ranks create their own hierarchy and elitist culture. No where else can a group of "rejects" and "geeks" create this hierarchy that sometimes refuses to accept it's own members simply because of a difference of opinion or a lack of "insider knowledge" that comes from hours of combing through websites, blogs, and message boards. Okay, maybe the sci-fi geeks, but that's probably it. Being a wrestling fan is sometimes like a huge extension of middle school. Everyone is already so insecure and awkward about themselves that they feel the need to ridicule others in order to make themselves feel a little better about themselves. If only temporarily. Sometimes, however you luck out and you meet some like minded people. Maybe you are from the same cultural background, maybe the same area of town, or maybe you're both wearing swank BJ Whitmer t-shirts, but sometimes, perhaps, you'll find a "wrestling friend".

When I go to shows I see 1 of 3 things with the crowd. A group of people arrive together and are an accepted "crew", a few people show up individually but end up congregating in one specific spot (usually cutting in front of everyone else) and that is an accepted "group", or the other possibility are the stragglers. These are the guys who are so committed to watching wrestling and enjoy it so much that they just show up alone. I used to make fun of those guys because they were "losers" who didn't have any friends to come with them. But, deep down, I don't think I would be dedicated enough or brave enough to just show up by myself because I love wrestling so much. In fact, my own "crew" has picked up a "straggler" or two along the way and…I'm glad we did. If you love wrestling enough to just sit there for an hour or two in line in the sweltering heat by yourself, sit through a 3 or 4 hour show, and make a long, late night drive back all by your lonesome…then maybe you deserve a little more respect and a little less ridicule. I mean, my "crew" isn't accepting membership applications right now (just too damn big as is), but I'm sure someone else wouldn't mind. I guess that's how "groups" get started.

I think what this all comes from is that wrestling truly is a "social event". It's just not the same when you sit at home and watch it on television by yourself. Having friends over to watch it or meeting people at your local Indy show, it all makes up this ‘event' that enriches the whole experience. You make a day out of it, you wake up in the morning excited to see a show, you meet up with buddies before hand to eat and talk about what you expect to happen, you wait in line, sometimes for hours ahead of time just rattling off every bit of wrestling insight, knowledge, or bullshit you have. Then even after the show you might grab a late night meal and replay the entire night again. It's a full day ‘event'. Even ordering pizza with a buddy or two while you watch RAW or Smackdown just makes the entire experience that much more powerful. Wrestling is a bond born out of the ridiculous and fictional but it doesn't become any less meaningful because of that.

When you look at some of the more memorable moments within wrestling inside the ring, even those are sometimes tied to the notion of "friendship" and "allegiances". Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage becomes the "Super Powers" and then becoming bitter rivals. The 4 Horsemen's rise to prominence. The picture of the Kliq sharing a hug in Madison Square Garden before half of them left for WCW. Even that poignant moment when Eddie climbed into the ring to huge Benoit after his first and only WWF Championship. That moment left an indelible mark in my memories that will never be stricken no matter what transpired afterwards. It's life imitating art. The depth of storylines which are brought out by the inclusions of those kayfabe (and sometimes real life) friendships inside the ring are played out just as cogently in the stands.

Lately I feel almost ashamed of being a wrestling fan now. The crap I see on television is a constant disappointment. Sometimes it feels as if the wrestling industry is almost ashamed of just being professional wrestling. That's probably why they spend so much time looking for "Hollywood writers" and why they spend so much of the show on comedy segments and bringing in "celebrities", retirees, and athletes hoping to drum up some media exposure, because they just aren't happy with the audience, the loyal audience, that they already have. Its almost embarrassing to tell people you like wrestling because it's such a farce that you can't even defend it to yourself believably, let alone someone who knows nothing more about it than grown men in little shorts. But there are those people that understand and can commiserate. A group of people you can sit around and bitch about the industry for literally hours on end. You can just shoot the shit about blown spots, forced pushes, and bad promos and in the end actually feel better. It doesn't make a whole ton of sense…but we're talking about wrestling after all. Where Great Khali is a champion and Samoa Joe is a high end jobber.

Wrestling, like any sport is a form of ‘entertainment' which is meant to be enjoyed in the company of others. While the wrestling itself is the main course, the camaraderie is the dessert. Its hard to sit at a show or in front of your television and not want to turn to someone and comment, make a joke, or a "WTF??" kind of look. I talked about this a while back, but the connection you make with another wrestling fan is just a kinship that is hard to describe. Because no matter how many times we read about "ratings" and "buy rates" when it comes down to it, it just seems like there really are so few of us. Finding someone else who know exactly what you mean when you say, "Yeah, I was trying to get that chick's number at the bar last night, but she TOTALLY no-sold me", that truly is priceless. Even when it really does seem that no one else you know would spend 5 mins watching a show with you there is always the internet. Chat rooms, message boards, AIM, all means to an end in reaching out to find that human connection, that thread of commonality that makes watching wrestling that much more fulfilling. How else could people thousands of miles away watch RAW on Mondays and be able to type out "I knew he'd say JAM" almost simultaneously. As weird as it sounds, I'd rather see bad wrestling with a good group of friends, then 3 hours of ****+ matches by myself any day of the week. For as much as the wrestling industry sometimes wants to pretend that they are so much more than just two men in a ring pretending to beat each other up…I hate to admit it but they are right. But it's not the promos and backstage antics…it's the guys in the audience…the friends in the audience that came there to watch a little wrestling and hang out. I figured that all out in that 10 minute ride back home last Sunday. But like I said…Sunday was a hell of a day.

The Truth

I guess I should apologize to some of you for departing from my usual cynical, smart ass meandering about the pitfalls of today's booking. I'll try to get back on track next week and throw in a few more "dick jokes" and asian bitches to make up for it. I guess this was just a momentary sidetrack. I didn't talk to my buddy about sharing an experience that was so personal. I hope he and his "little" brother are okay with it, I don't know if he'll even come across this, but it was something that was pretty profound and somehow writing about whether MVP and Matt Hardy is building into the feud of the year" or "Should VKM be assassinated" just seemed pretty insignificant. Sometimes you just need to examine more than just the show itself but also the people who are touched by it. It's the friendships you make that revolve around that squared circle that can mean so much. With the way wrestling has been lately it has just made me so bitter and disenfranchised by the whole perversion of something I used to love, but sometimes you just get reminded of how much wrestling has really enriched your life. Even if it was merely an unintended result. For those of you who are the "stragglers", the sole solitary wrestling fan in a sea of non-believers. Take heart. There will be a chance to join in with a like minded group of cast offs and nomads. It may take time, but it can be well worth it because the it's not just the destination, its' not just the journey, but it's the company you take along for that ride.

Coming Up Short

CM Punk was playing Ricky Morton in the tag match on ECW. While I realize everyone is basically betting the farm that he wins the title from John Morrison at Summerslam, I'm not so sure. Right now it looked like it was Boogeyman being set up for the hot tag and as the real threat in this match. He even got to no-sell Morrison and Miz on several occasions. By the way, I actually thought the match was messier than a Diva Search contestant's after the first round, but that's just me. For me Punk is really on a treadmill in that his character hasn't developed much and he's just being made to look less threatening than both Big Daddy V and Boogeyman. Not what you want considering Punk and Morrison are the two wrestlers with any hope of longevity on ECW, especially with Elijah doing a clean job to Balls…um….yeah that just doesn't hit the ol' ear drum right. CM Punk and Morrison need to be built up as the big feud here, not BDV and Boogey. If CM Punk finally wins the belt at Summerslam it will seem a little flat to me and if he loses then he'll officially be a ‘choker'. Either way, not what you want to do with the guy who is supposed to be holding the 3rd most important belt in the company right now. At LEAST give the guy a nice video package…c'mon….in my opinion CM Punk's inevitable push to the top has just come up short.

Louis Jones isn't a limey after all:

As for my victory, I first need to clarify something. I am not from England. I just happen to like British Men... in movies I mean. Nope, I am actually Canadian
(watch out, we are invading. We have already taken Wisconsin). Anyway, to continue in the vein of men I love, lets connect Alan Rickman. He should be easier than Jay Buhner!

Canadian?? Damn, that is crazy…and to think I used to respect you. Ya Hoser. Btw, you can have Wisconsin. In fact, if you are willing to take back Alanis Morrissette and Celine Dion you can have Idaho too. Well there is no logical choice for the man who plays one of my favorite Harry Potter characters…or…is there?

Oh yeah, you ol skool wrasslin' fans don't need to be told who this man is. But since there are a few Canadians in the audience…it's the Grand Wizard of Wrestling. Yep, from one evil wizard to another it's one of the last few 6DO's before the big tournament so if you want a chance to enter, you gotta get a win. Perhaps this week. Get to it.

Whatchu talkin' bout readers?

Chris Jacobs weighs in on the Hollywoodification of Wrestling:

my opinion to the hollywood writer only applications is this, and thinking as positive as I can; They have ex-wrestlers in the back giving ideas. Maybe they dont know how to word things out and work it into long term angles and give drama, so the writers come in and take those ideas and tweek it a little until the wrestlers mesh with the writers and hopefully we have some good angles that will be coming out of wrestling soon....thinking with lots of hope...

You know, that's probably the thinking in the "e". you have to have add some "sizzle with the steak" so to speak. I think the problem is that you get people who are Hollywood and sitcom writers without any idea of the product itself. It's like having your girlfriend send you to the supermarket for groceries…without a grocery list. I'm sure she can piece something together from the celery, shrimp, and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, but you aren't going to want seconds.

Caught your article this week. Goodness Bayani, I miss actual wrestling on TV too. I got sick of WWE's so-called "sports entertainment" shtick a long time ago. Look at it this way. When your favorite wrestler ever is still on TV performing and you STILL won't watch the show, that's saying something. TNA used to be my free TV salvation in all of this. But then that Vince Russo guy came back... and of course IMPACT took a nosedive into the cesspool everyone sees now. I wasn't watching anymore, and I sure as hell wasn't going near the PPV "buy" button on my TV screen.
My final foray with "sports entertainment" ended with an angry agreement to Ryan Byers' "Impact Crater", a rant that was spewing with venom and distain for what TNA and wrestling as a whole has become. To this day, many months later, I've kept to my word and avoided free TV wrestling like a plague.
I still come here and read recaps and laugh when you guys talk about how badly WWE is booked, and TNA being even worse since they are playing follow the leader on a completely broken formula.
Like you said, it's truly sad that there is more wrestling shows on weekday TV than ever but very little of it actually has any real wrestling. My attitude about has always been like I see other sports. I watch basketball to see basketball, I watch baseball to see baseball (which many have more dopers than wrestling these days), etc. etc. While I know well that a wrestling show will never be all about the in-ring product -- there used to be a solid balance… Heh, not anymore.
I hope that one day sooner or later someone once again puts together something that I can get into without me being forced to buy indie DVDs. But I can tell you with all certainty that "WWE Idol" isn't going to cut the mustard.

Marlen Austin

You know Marlen, Indy DVD's aren't too bad. I know I've pretty much resigned myself to subsisting mainly off of RoH and PWG DVD's. Sure it takes a pretty penny out of the old wallet, but I just feel like I get a better bang for my buck. I guess we can always hope that when that 2nd hour of Impact! Comes in the next month of so Russo will finally come to his sense. Yeah right…who's writing fantasy now?

I feel ur pain brother - I ended up ranting about the same thing in the "You're an idiot - The Great Khali" debate last week.

Like you, i was ready to hang-up my boots as a fan and stop watching wrestling. But since I love wrestling so much, I ended up buying a few ROH DVD's that were reviewed in 411 and caught the ROH PPV and am back on track. Now all I need is for an ROH tv show.

Just tape the episodes of Raw (Smackdown's not even worth it anymore) and ECW and fast-forward through all the 'entertainment' segment crap and watch the matches with the guys u wanna see - that's what I do now to stay sane and still get my wrestling fix.

You're right, it's sad that wrestling's become like this, but WWE and TNA just don't wanna listen no matter how much we complain - let's hope ROH doesn't follow suit. Wrestling is a joke now and it's shameful to admit you're a fan these days because not only do you lose respect for the average joe who doesn't know a thing about wrestling, but u lose respect from the wrestling fans that have turned their back on wrestling because of the "entertainment" focus.

Derek

You gotta get your fix as a ‘wrestling fan', no matter how, where, or why. Wrestling is trying to repackage itself as entertainment so the "casual fan" won't be embarrassed to watch it, but what about the hardcore fans who like the action and don't mind taking it a bit more seriously? Well…we have Pacman Jones. I wonder if his contract even lets his fart in the presence of another wrestler?

Holy Shit

I have to say that this latest 6DO was the most dificult yet. I spent all week working on it, and I finally got it late Tuesday night!

1) Jay Buhner made his major league on Sept 11th, 1987, the same day that the great actor Lorne Greene passed away.
2) Lorne Greene starred forever on the show "Bonanza" along with a young Micheal Landon, who played his son.
3) Micheal Landon starred in "Sam's Son" along with Eli Wallach.
4) Eli Wallach was in the film "Nuts" with Leslie Neilson.
5) Leslie Neilson was in "Family Plan", which contained a cameo by Kevin Nash as a Jackhammer worker.
6) Kevin Nash won the epic 3 Ring Battle Royal at WWIII 1998, of which Chavo Guerrero failed to win

It was like a Kurt Angle/Samoa Joe match, it was built pretty good and it was solid all the way up until the end where it kinda went…meh. Still, I would not have pegged Buhner and Lorne Greene as links. Not even on my best day…which is Friday. Yep…Friday.

I'm liking the recent competition in the 6DO ring. To keep up, I have two submissions this week:

#1 -

1. Jay Buhner was traded to the Seattle Mariners from the New York Yankees, a trade that was mocked in an episode of "Seinfeld" after George Steinbrenner went to the Costanza's house to report (mistakenly) that George was dead and Frank Costanza yelled at him, "What the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for?! He had 30 home runs, over 100 RBIs last year! He's got a rocket for an arm...You don't know what the hell you're doing!" Frank Costanza was played by Jerry Stiller.
2. Jerry Stiller stars in the TV show "The King Of Queens" with Kevin James.
3. Kevin James starred in the 2007 movie "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry" with Adam Sandler.
4. Adam Sandler starred in the 2005 movie "The Longest Yard", which boated the acting talents of Bill Goldberg.
5. Goldberg's first appearance on WCW television was on the September 22, 1997, episode of WCW Monday Nitro, when he defeated Hugh Morrus.
6. Hugh Morrus was a member of the stable Misfits In Action (as General Hugh G. Rection), as was Chavo Guerrero (as Lt. Loco).

#2 -

1. Jay Buhner is known to be able to vomit on command, as was Darren Drozdov, which earned Droz the stage name 'Puke' when he first came into the WWE.
2. On October 5, 1999, Droz was left a quadriplegic at the hands of D-Lo Brown after D-Lo botched a running powerbomb.
3. D-Lo Brown was one of only a few wrestlers to hold both the Intercontinental and European Championship simultaneously, one other being Rob Van Dam.
4. Rob Van Dam had to put his Money In The Bank opportunity on the line at Backlash 2006 against Shelton Benjamin after he was defeated by an opponent chosen by Benjamin, which was all 5 members of the Spirit Squad.
5. One of the members of the Spirit Squad was Nicky, aka Nick Nemeth.
6. Nick Nemeth was the caddy/enforcer for Kerwin White, aka Chavo Guerrero.

Double C

Just enough to win this week. Though one can not underestimate the power of puking on cue. Which sounds like one of those things that "America's Got Talent" has clearly missed the bus on. Well Double C you are rolling into the "King of 6DO" tournament coming up as a firm #1 seed. Let's see what you can do with another win and another week's nominee.

Left Overs…

  • Looks like Rosey may be back after all. Remember that guy? He was the ‘shit'. Apparently he also lost a lot of weight. I think it was after he was on that new reality show…I forgot what it was…um…I dunno…"America's got Diabetes"?

  • Rumors have it that Mick Foley was trying to get on RAW more, but Vince decided he didn't connect as well with viewers in 2007. I mean…he's NO Hacksaw Jim Duggans.

  • Highlanders to Smackdown? So now the tag ranks will have Blonde twins, Greasers, and men in skirts?? This is like one spooky child actor short of a Kubrick film now.

  • Mark Henry may not resign after his contract is over this fall. He's already booked for tour of Japan. No, not a wrestler, just restaurants...mainly buffets.

  • Brent Albright vs Bryan Danielson is the NWA Heavyweight Title finals set for 9/1 in Puerto Rico. Danielson is set to wrestling in the Battle of Los Angeles just a day before that. I'm not sure how that affects his odds of advancing in the tournament due to that kind of time restriction but I'm sure it doesn't bode well. Unless he somehow finds the same time portal to the past that Vince Russo has been booking in.

  • Matt Sydal has been rumored to have been sent a Developmental Deal by the "e" but has yet to sign it. I could just imagine Matt Sydal after he drops all the top rope and "high risk" moves.

  • So Vince is trying to get Bret Hart to come back and push the intro of the Hart Foundation 2.0 in exchange for pimping his book. I hear each pre-ordered book comes with a free sample of the same mouthwash Bret is going to use to take the taste of Vince's ass out of his mouth.

  • Stephanie is pushing for a D'lo Brown revival. Wow, that Steph has her finger on the very PULSE of popular wrestling. Maybe she'll try to bring back tights with tassels while she's at it. Ass tassels = Ratings.

  • Aries looking to replace Cross and Stevens? Well it makes sense, because if I was on the losing end of a feud I'd want to replace them with...um... Jason Blade. Or...I dunno...a mop... a nice one though.

  • Random Asian Bitch Lookin' Good Pic of the Week

I guess that's why you never hear of a "Yellow Scare".

  • Serioiusly, where the hell are they going with this "Kelly Kelly <3's Balls" deal? Kelly Kelly is a Ho Ho. First Knox, then Punk, then Miz, then Balls, then the Anus. Wait...sorry, I guess that's just a logical place to go after Balls right?

  • The 9/15 RoH show in Detroit will feature Bryan Danielson and Austin Aries taking on the Briscoe Bros for the tag titles. In an ironic twist why do I have the feeling that during that match a steel beam will fall on the ring, kill all those guys and RoH will have to run with Bobby Dempsey vs Pelle Primeau in the main event until it shuts down 2 weeks later?

  • I hear that the "Survivor" that Ashley is going to be on is set in China. China. China? Are we running out of places that are totally unpopulated now? I hear this is going to be an all female cast however with the challenge being that each girl will be assigned as a ‘daughter' to a family that really wanted a boy with only a 1 child quota. Yeah, trying surviving that bitches.

  • Is anyone else not liking the name "Team Pacman"? I think I've come up with an even snazzier tag team name for Killings and Jones. Hell, they even got Entrance Music all ready for them.

"Make it chocolate rain…on them ho's!!"

    Pimpin' In High Places

So apparently the theme of the past week has been, "TNA WTF??" Which would make an awesome t-shirt. Not as swank as a TBT baby Tee but still nice.:

Ask 411 tackles Zeus this week. No, not the Greek God, the Black dude...with the lazy eye. Which is equally awe inspiring. As in ..."Awwww....someone should help him get that fixed".

Jules has his Top 10 Summerslam matches. I always wished they would bring back the "Bash at the Beach" for the hell of it. Great Khali in coolots? How can you go wrong?

J-Link has a love/hat relationship with TNA. Which is like being ‘bi', right?

Fink's Payload takes on a plethora of subjects. Which leads us to believe that the A.D.D. suffered by Russo and the bookers has spread to the rest of the IWC.

Evo Scheme has the Honky Tonk Man. Who won this spot by pulling the tights of Tito Santana. The ref said he never saw it.

CoH doesn't hate TNA. Then again...they have their own problems to deal with. Namely Bobby Dempsey sneakin' Dairy Queen again. The Fatkins diet strikes again.

Threat x 3 takes on TNA. They lose of course...it's not their fault...Russo was booking. At least we got a random Sean Garmer cameo and subsequent heel turn tho.

Csonka's TNA Top 10. Mine includes mostly porn stars and models...his includes James Storm. Odd....

Sammy makes us remember what we would like to forget. Hagadorn vs Primeau...uh, yeah...moving on...

D-Dubya thinks TNA is in the layer cake. Ooh, look at me and my topical international humor. I'm like a brown Mr. Bean.

Big week coming up. The Pro Wrestling Guerrilla Battle of Los Angeles 2007 Preview Spectac-U-Lar is set for next week. Perhaps even a little round table action will be in order. I also am officially unemployed...for two weeks that is, until I start my new job. Nice little vacation and time off before my commute changes from .5 to 20.5 miles. Damn, that sucks. Anyways hopefully TNA will do something, ANYTHING to restore my faith in them and with a little luck we'll have some actual wrestling on TV. Not that speculation as to whether Big Daddy V is actually Vince's bastard child or not isn't great but...it isn't. Not by a long shot. Oh well, get your picks in early cuz' next week is all about BoLA '07.

Till then, the Truth will set you free.
