The Top Ten 10.23.07: Randy Orton Matches
Posted by Julian Williams on 10.23.2007

Good day folks and welcome back to another edition of The Top Ten. Sorry about the lackage of columnage last week, but working double shifts at work can wear a brotha down. Luckily, my hard work hasn't gone unnoticed as I just got promoted so hurray for me! Feel free to send your congratulatory liquor this way, preferably Jack Daniels or Southern Comfort, thank ya kindly. This week, we're going to take a gander at The Top Ten Randy Orton matches. Now I know you're probably thinking, "Julian, has Randy Orton even had one great match, yet alone ten?!?" Prepare to be amazed grasshopper because Young Randall has had more great matches than you may realize. Ok, enough dilly-dallying, let's get into this shite.

Reader Feedback

First up is Scott who mentions 2 Bret Hart matches that didn't make my list:

Julian,
My top 10 list of Bret Hart matches contains 8 of the same matches that your list consists of. The other 2 matches I have on my list, however, are not only not on your list, but they also didn't make your honorable mention category either. The other two matches I have in my top 10 list of Bret Hart matches are as part of the Hart Foundation versus the Brainbusters at SummerSlam '89 and versus Rowdy Roddy Piper at WM VIII. Also, nothing beats the interview before the match where Piper is talking about Helen making sandwiches for him and Bret. The Rowdy Scot was hilarious in his line about Helen only using a little bit of meat when making the sandwich. I, along with every other fan who enjoys great wrestling, just wish we could have seen Bret Hart/Kurt Angle main event a PPV. That's the only match, in my eyes, that could surpass the greatness that was Chris Benoit/Kurt Angle from the '03 Royal Rumble which I had the pleasure and honor of seeing live at the Fleet Center in Boston.

The Hart Foundation vs. Brainbusters at SS '89 was definitely a great match, but Bret had so many great matches, I had to leave a few off and that was one of them. Hell, I could make a Top Ten Hart Foundation matches because those two had great matches with EVERYONE whether it be The British Bulldogs or The Rougeaus or The Rockers or Demoliton. Yea, that actually sounds like a good idea. Watch out for it people!

Next we have Aaron, who feels that there should be a different #1 Bret match:

Great, phenomenal list for one of my personal favorite wrestlers. But I have two problems. One is that the Owen Hart Tribute Match should be #1 because that match is the most important match of Bret's life, not just his career.

And where's love for the Wrestlemania 8 match with the Hot Rod?

I can't disagree with Aaron here as the Bret/Benoit match had to easily be the most emotional of Bret's career. I would think that match is probably one of Bret's favorites if not his absolute favorite. Almost every email I got mentioned Bret/Piper and I cant fault any of you because that was certainly an awesome match, but I just liked the rest of the matches on the list just a weeee bit more.

Now we have Samer who wants to pay me back for my list. No need for the cash Samer, cheap booze and a peg-legged floozy will do:

Hey Jules, this is Samer from Lebanon..

How can i pay you back for this list? Simply Awesome..
I always wanted to E-mail you asking for a Top Ten Bret Hart matches list..
And I got to say this is probably the most difficult list to do, but you've done one hell of a job, without leaving out any major matches.. You've also done one hell of a job with the honorable mentions, naming some of the less talked about but equally awesome matches..

However, one thing i don't agree upon was the infamous Bret vs Shawn match at S.S 1997. This was a good match, we got a great brawl all over the place at the beginning followed by some good wrestling action, and yes it was a historically important match, but putting it at number 10 while ignoring their much better match at Survivor Series 1992 isn't quite correct in my opinion. I think the S.S 1992 is the best match Bret and Shawn had behind the Iron Man match at WrestleMania 12.

Another match you forgot to mention was the Bret vs Piper match from Wrestlemania with that awesome finish where Bret pins Piper after running the turnbuckles while he was in a sleeper.

And finally, i would say the best Bret Hart match is the Iron Man match against Shawn from Wrestlemania 12 followed closely by the Bret vs Austin match the next year. The reason i like this match better is simply because it had more wrestling. It is one of the best Wrestling matches of the 90's in North America. Seeing the best 2 wrestlers in the world at the time going for over an hour at the biggest show of the year isn't something you witness every day.

Still man, awesome list. Keep it up.

I must admit that I forgot all about the SurSer '92 match between Bret and HBK otherwise that might have cracked The Top Ten, that was an unbelievable match. I think that the Top Five matches that I had on Bret's list could all be interchangeable because they were all 5 star classics and I think it just depends on who you ask what order the matches would be placed in. I just happen to prefer Bret/Austin the most, but I can definitely see why other people, including Samer, would prefer Bret/Michaels because that was a wrestling masterpiece for 60 full minutes. How can you hate on that?

We have Austin next who mentions another great commentator:

You left off Paul Heyman after Lawler left Heyman did a great job in his abscence. Since Lawler came back he has lost something though. Also no Cyrus or Joel Gertner WTF!!! Oh well

Heyman was definitely a fantastic announcer and the only reason I didn't put him on the list is because I felt like he didn't do it for long enough to warrant a spot. But there isn't any doubt that whenever Heyman is on a mic, whether it be in the ring or behind the booth, great things are going to happen.

Nameless in Akron (actually I don't know where he's from) sent in this one, not understanding my #1 pick for commentators:

I stopped reading your Top 10 once it became obvious who #1 was. JR is terrible. Outside of his work in the early 90's, he's done very little to warrant even BEING on the top ten, must less #1. He still can't call HALF the moves the roster performs. He went several years where he called Chris Jericho, Benoit and Benoit Jericho. YEARS!

JR lucked into a kosher job in the WWE and he's kissed ass non-stop for years to keep it. Saying JR is the best announcer is like saying Triple H is the best wrestler. Just because WWE pushes them down our throats, doesn't mean they're worth shit.

Tony should be WAY higher. You wouldn't get flack over Tony. He's one of the best announcers EVER in the business.

Tenay should be on there too, if your putting fucktards like JBL on there.

And Tazz (Pre-ECW) > JBL

Ok, JR fucks up. We all know that. We've heard JR miscall moves and mispronounce wrestlers names numerous times over the last few years. And you know what? Even though he does all that, he is STILL the best commentator that ever lived and I'll tell you why. Nobody and I mean NOBODY calls a big match better than JR. Seriously. Think about it for a second. Who conveys more emotion and gets the viewer more emotionally invested in a match than JR? Nobody. And what's crazy is that JR was even BETTER when he was younger. People are so quick to dismiss JR based on his modern day commentating, seemingly forgetting how absolutely FLAWLESS he was during his WCW days. Hell, even in his early WWE days, JR was absolutely perfect on the mic. He didn't start fucking up regularly until his bout with Bells Palsy. And even though I like Tony, he doesn't deserve higher than 10 honestly. He is right that Pre-ECW Tazz was better than JBL, but unfortunately Tazz's commentating in ECW has gone way downhill from his time on Smackdown. And Mike Tenay sucks balls. Him and his $1.99 Tuxedo.

That's all for the feedback this week friends. Thank you to all you guys who sent in your thoughts and I hope to hear more from all of you.

Random Thoughts Of A Disturbed Wrestling Fan

-The Rey Mysterio/MVP match from Smackdown was the wrestling equivalent of a cock tease because you could see in that brief encounter that these two have the potential to put on one hell of a match. I hope that once their respective current feuds with Finlay and Matt Hardy are wrapped up, these two are given at least 15 minutes on a PPV to show us what they are capable of because I think it could turn out to be one of the best matches of the year.

-Is it just me or are the Diva Search wenches this year not that hot? They are alright, but not drop dead hot like I was expecting. The Asian chick was the best out of the final three, just because she had a SERIOUS ass (which is amazing for an Asian chick….sorry Bayani) and she got voted off. Damn whitey, always eliminating the hot ethnic girls.

-"I'm going to open up a can of the asswhip!" = Best Line of the year.

-HBK's return a couple weeks ago was one of the most pleasant surprises I've seen for quite some time in wrestling. Besides the fact that he looked bad-ass sporting his hybrid Chuck Norris/Skinner/Ted Nugent/Grizzly Adams beard, his return was a complete and total shock. A lot of people talked about the lukewarm reception he got when he first came out, but I think that's because the crowd was legitimately shocked and once they realized that HBK was actually there, they started going bananas. Great moment from the WWE in a year that seems to only produce crappy ones.

-I'm very sad about Booker T's departure from the ‘E as he was always one of the most entertaining superstars on any brand. Even though he pretty much shot himself in the foot with the Wellness suspension, I will still miss King BOOK-AH and the bootylicious Queen Sharmell gracing my television screen every week.

-Why in the blue fuck in the WWE suddenly giving The Highlanders a push? Not that I have anything against The Highlanders, but the WWE have spent the better part of a year completely burying The Highlanders to the point where they were getting beat by one man who wasn't HHH or Super Cena. Now all of a sudden, we're suppose to buy them as credible threats to the title? And let's not forget that the ‘E is ONCE AGAIN completely burying London & Kendrick in favor of having a Tag Title program that features two HEEL teams! That's right, instead of pushing the ONLY face tag team that they have on Raw to go after the titles, the ‘E opts instead to have two heel teams go at it. Do you hear that sound? That's the sound of nobody giving a fuck because they dislike both teams. Great job WWE. No wonder the kids nowadays couldn't give two damns about tag team wrestling. Hopefully the Hooliganz getting a win over Cade & Murdoch on Raw was a sign of a push to come, but I think they are just using L&K as fodder in a storyline that they have with Mickie James and Cade & Murdoch.

-I'm pretty excited about the news that ECW and Smackdown are joining forces. A lot of people are up in arms about this since it's once again shunting ECW, but let's face it, ECW has been the cock-eyed, unloved, stepchild of the WWE for a while. When it was first brought back, it seemed like the WWE might be trying to give this new ECW a chance by bolstering the roster with guys like Big Show, RVD, Kurt Angle, Tommy Dreamer, and Sabu and having superstars like Batista, John Cena, Edge, Randy Orton, The Hardys and DX appear on it every week. But then after a while, Vince just seemed to not give a fuck about it anymore. He put all the younger guys on the show and expected all the fans to care about them. Outside of CM Punk, the average fan couldn't give a crap about anybody on the current ECW roster. Let's face it, people aren't going to be tuning in every week to see CM Punk vs. John Morrison…..part 67. With the addition of Smackdown to the mix, now we have the possibility of seeing new and fresh matchups every Tuesday and Friday night. Also, the ECW guys will get a rub by hanging with the Smackdown guys and the possibility of seeing Rey Mysterio or Matt Hardy or Batista on a Tuesday night should instantly bolster ratings for the struggling ECW. I know a lot of people are saying that the ‘E should try to bring up more guys from development and allow these young guys to create their own niche on this show, but the only problem with that is that there isn't enough time for that. Their deal with Sci-Fi expires at the end of this year. And if ratings are still floundering in the 1.0 range, it's doubtful that they will get renewed. Sorry guys, but this is the right BUSINESS move and at the end of the day, this big & wacky circus that we like to call wrestling is still a business.

-I never realized how awesome NBA TV was until the other day. In a 6-hour span, I was able to see The Top Ten All-Star Weekend Moments, The Top Ten All-Star Game Moments, The Top 50 Larry Bird Play's, The 52 Greatest Moments in NBA History, and The Top 25 Dunks of All-Time. If you a fan of NBA basketball, you are doing yourself a serious disservice if you don't have this channel. It's Fan-Tastic. Good God, that was chessy.

-All my fears about this season of The Office have been unfounded because I thought that once Jim and Pam were in a relationship, their humor would fall by the wayside (see: Bing, Chandler) but they have been just as funny as ever. Their trip to Dwight's Bed & Breakfast was priceless and the way that they play off each other comically is gold. And of course Steve Carell has been his usual awesome self and finds new ways to make me nearly choke from laughing every episode.

-I just watched Children Of Men this weekend and that is one of the most intense and heart wrenching movies I've seen in a long time. The battle scenes are absolutely breathtaking and relentless and rival those of Saving Private Ryan and Flags Of Our Fathers, though not quite as detailed and extensive. This is a movie that anybody could appreciate and makes one realize just how important human life truly is.

-For some reason, I've had Hootie & The Blowfish stuck in my head for the last few days. Man, those guys ruled. Come back Hootie! Bring your Blowfish too! We all need a little more Hootie in our life.

Poll Results

So last time, I asked you guys what was your favorite Bret Hart match. Well the results are in and with 36% of the vote, the winner is:

Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin (Wrestlemania 13)

Well that makes me 100% in picking the same #1 as you guys. Admit it, I'm pretty awesome. Ok maybe not pretty awesome, but at least decent. Ok maybe not decent, but at least passable. Ok maybe not passable, but at least not as bad as that dude that boned your ex-girlfriend 2 days after she broke up with you and then tried to give you dap like everything was cool. Yea, I'm a little bit better than that guy.

The Top Ten Randy Orton Matches

Honorable Mention: Randy Orton vs. Batista vs. Triple H vs. Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit vs. Edge (New Year's Revolution '05)
This was an Elimination Chamber match for the vacant World Heavyweight Title and all six men came in looking to claim gold. The big story around this match was whether Batista would help out Evolution leader Triple H or try to go for the Big Gold Belt himself. Randy Orton had been tortured by Triple H for months after being kicked out of Evolution and looked to get some measure of revenge here. This was a highly enjoyable match with all six men brining something special and it's probably the second best EC match ever, just behind the first one at Survivor Series ;02. The star of the match was Batista who dominated pretty much everybody, but Orton came thisclose to gaining his second World Heavyweight Championship until Batista interfered after being eliminated and cost Orton the match. This was a fun spectacle that showcased just how great an Elimination Chamber match could (and should) be.

Honorable Mention: Randy Orton vs. Kurt Angle (One Night Stand '06)
During the initial re-birth of ECW, Kurt Angle was being heralded as the mold for the ECW superstar for the new millennium. ECW was no longer going to only showcase the most hardcore wrestlers in the world, but they were going to showcase the best technical wrestlers also. One man to quickly challenge that theory was Randy Orton as, fresh off suspension, he delivered a thunderous RKO to Angle to get his attention. This led to a face off at the second ever One Night Stand (oxymoronic, I know) and Randy played to the crowd perfectly. The booed the hell out of him for being a "sports entertainer" instead of a wrestler (even though less than 3 months later, ECW would fall under the veil of sports entertainment, but I digress) and he goaded them on until they were about ready to kill him. Angle came out and dissected Orton for the opening portion of the match, but then Randy started using his smarts and quickly gained control of the match. The match ended when Angle threw down Orton after an RKO attempt and slapped on the Anklelock for the submission. The highlight of this match was afterwards, though, as Randy demanded not one, but TWO refs help him to the back and waved and thanked all of his "adoring" fans. Classic.

Honorable Mention: Randy Orton vs. Rey Mysterio vs. Kurt Angle (WrestleMania 22)
Sure, this match was short as hell and could have been so much more, but for the nine minutes this match did run, it provided non-stop action that kept the crowd enthralled. Randy Orton came into this match as an uber-heel by robbing Rey Mysterio of his guaranteed Wrestlemania title shot at No Way Out after defeating him in a #1 Contender's Match after getting Rey emotional by defaming his deceased friend, Eddie Guerrero. Smackdown GM, Teddy Long, saw the injustice that took place and placed Rey into the Wrestlemania World Title Match between Kurt Angle and Randy Orton, thus making it a Triple Threat Match. From the opening bell, these men wrestled at a frenetic pace with barely any rest holds or slowdown. It was a short match, but they fit in a lot of stuff in that short time frame and the match ended when Rey busted out the West Coast Pop and dropped Orton straight on his head for the three count and the title. Orton played his role perfectly in this match and hung in there with two of the best that this industry has ever seen.

10) Randy Orton vs. Edge (Raw, 4/30/07)
Team Rated RKO seemed destined to explode from the time they first made their pact to destroy DX. The dueling partners finally locked it up on this episode of Raw and produced a match that instantly made you want to see more from these two. Orton controlled the early portions of the match by propelling Edge into the crowd barricade and Edge responded a few moments later when he sent Orton FLYING over the announce table. For the rest of the match, these two tried to outcheat each other with both men at various points putting their feet on the ropes, poking the eyes, and taking off the turnbuckle pads. The ending was fantastic as Edge went a spear which Orton leapfrogged over and went for an RKO which Edge was able to push off and then catch Orton with the Spear for the three count. Incredible stuff that makes me hope to see another match between these two somewhere down the line.

9) Randy Orton vs. The Undertaker (WrestleMania 21)
Leading up to this match, Randy finally went back to his heelish ways instead of being the bitch ass Orton that HHH had punked out and regained some of the edge that made him so popular in the first place (including a SWEEET RKO on the lovely Stacy Keibler). He challenged the Deadman to a match at Wrestlemania because he figured if he ended The Deadman's historic Wrestlemania streak, then nobody could ever deny that he's truly a Legend Killer. This match was a lot better than anyone ever expected with both men busting their ass to provide one hell of an entertaining bout. Even though Randy came very close to ending the streak, he fell victim to The Tombstone and became just another number on ‘Taker's historic streak. Even in defeat Randy proved why he's such a great talent and continued to prove all the naysayers wrong.

8) Randy Orton vs. Rey Mysterio (Smackdown, 4/7/06)
Many people fondly remember the match that these two had at No Way Out 2004, but in my opinion, this is an even better match than that one. This was Rey's first title defense after winning the belt at WM22 and Orton was trying his damndest to make it as short a reign as possible. Orton threw everything he could at Rey, including a vicious facebuster and a sweet dropkick that caught Rey when he tried to come off the top rope. Rey was able to fight off Orton's offense and hit two 619's (including one off the ringpost) and Drop The Dime to get the three count and his first successful title defense. This was an awesome match that showcased the skills of both men quite perfectly.

7) Team Bischoff vs. Team Austin (Survivor Series '03)
Eric Bischoff and Stone Cold Steve Austin were co-General Manager's on Raw and the two men could not stand each other. So the only resolution was to have one of them fired and that's how this match came about. Bischoff would assemble a team to combat a team assembled by Austin and the two teams would meet in a traditional Survivor Series match where the losing team would see their leader fired. Austin's team consisted of Shawn Michaels, Rob Van Dam, Booker T and The Dudley Boyz and Bischoff's team had Randy Orton, Chris Jericho, Christian, Mark Henry and Scott Steiner. After Scott Steiner, Booker T and Mark Henry were quickly dispatched, RVD and The Dudleyz followed suit, thus leaving Shawn Michaels all by his lonesome to take on Jericho, Christian and Orton. The three men took their time dissecting Michaels and it seemed like all hope was lost for The Heartbreak Kid. Christian catapulted Michaels into the steel post which busted HBK wide open and just when Christian went to take advantage, Michaels connected with Sweet Chin Music to put Christian down for the three count. Next came Jericho who seemed to have the match won when he reversed Sweet Chin Music into The Walls Of Jericho, but HBK reversed that into a roll-up for the three count. That left Michaels all alone with Orton and after Orton accidentally hit the ref with a flying crossbody, that allowed fellow Evolution member Batista to run-in and give Michaels the Batista Bomb which allowed Orton to cover for the pin. This was Orton's first major win and it showed that he could hang in the main event scene.

6) Randy Orton, Batista & Ric Flair vs. The Rock & Mick Foley (Wrestlemania 20)
This was a dream match for many fans mainly because you got to see The Rock, Mick Foley and Ric Flair together in the ring, but the two young guns in Batista and Randy Orton came in with something to prove. Going up against two of the most legendary men the business has ever seen, both Orton and Batista held their own and the result was one of the most fun matches you'll ever see. Just the interactions between The Rock and Flair alone are worth the price of admission to this match. The match ended when Orton was able to hit an RKO from out of nowhere on Mick Foley to score the upset win. This was the first big victory of Orton's career and he would have many more to come after this.

5) Randy Orton vs. Chris Benoit (Summerslam '04)
This was Randy Orton's first legitimate shot at the World Heavyweight Championship and the only thing standing in his way was one of the toughest men the business has ever seen. These two had a hard hitting, brutal affair where Orton was surprisingly able to stand his ground against one of the stiffest hitters in the history of sports entertainment. The ending came the same way most of Orton's matches end, with an RKO out of nowhere. This put Benoit down for the three count and gave Orton his first World Heavyweight Championship. Afterward, Benoit demanded a handshake of RESPECT and it seemed like Orton was destined for great things in the months to come, but we all know HHHow that turned out.

4) Randy Orton vs. Triple H (No Mercy '07)
I just got a chance to check out this match a few days ago and even though it isn't The Match Of The Year like some people are touting it to be, it still is an absolutely phenomenal match. The psychology behind the match was genius as HHH had hurt ribs from his earlier encounter with Umaga and that was the focus of Randy Orton's attack. Everytime Trips started to gain some steam, Orton would cut him off by targeting the ribs. This match featured some hellacious action like HHH giving Orton a wicked spinebuster on the floor, Orton giving HHH an RKO on an unfolded steel chair and finally Orton countering the Pedigree with a sick RKO on the announce table that finally gave him the 10 count for the victory. This was a match that wound up making both men look like a million bucks and is definitely one of the defining moments in Young Randy's career.

3) Randy Orton vs. John Cena (Summerslam '07)
This match was worth the price of admission for Summerslam as it was an absolutely FANTASTIC match. Even with Orton's 9,127 headlocks, this was still a very fast-paced and wildly entertaining match. Orton was actually the glue to this match and he exhibited why he indeed deserves to be a main eventer. When Orton hit the RKO, I truly thought it was over so when Cena kicked out, it was a genuine shock (something that I haven't felt while watching a wrestling match in a LOOONG time). The only thing that could have made this match better was if Randy kicked out of the F-U. If that happened, I think Continental Airlines Arena would have gone INSANE. As it stands, this was a phenomenal match that I think will go down for years to come as an all time Summerslam classic and I'm glad I was there live to see it.

2) Randy Orton vs. Edge vs. John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels (Backlash '07)
This was a phenomenal match and it showed why all four men are the foundation of the ‘E. It was well paced, action packed, and filled with tense moments that made you wonder who was going to pick up the win. I knew that Cena was going to win, but I think that the way they did it was absolutely genius. Shawn had Cena beat after the superkick, but Cena was just fortunate enough to land on top of Orton otherwise his title would be lost. Orton showcased some great stuff in this match and proved why he deserved to hang with the big boys. This was a fun match and a great way to cap off a great PPV.

1) Randy Orton vs. Cactus Jack (Backlash '04)
This is a personal favorite of mine as I loved this feud and I felt that this was the perfect culmination for it. This match made Randy Orton a star and proved that Mick Foley is willing to put people over for the good of the business. After months of taunting and abusing Mick and even squeaking by with a win in a tag match at WM20, Randy now had to face off against Mick one-on-one. But this wasn't just any kind of match and Randy wasn't facing the lovable, friendly Foley. It was a hardcore match and Randy was now facing Cactus Jack! The match was a brutal affair that Randy was surprisingly able to hold his own in. Cactus started off the match by trying to maim Orton with a baseball bat covered in barbed wire, which Orton frantically used a garbage can to block. After a cameraman got knocked over, Orton used the distraction to drop toe hold Cactus and take temporary control of the match. Cactus was able to regain control match soon enough and busted Orton wide open with a shot to the head with the barbwire covered baseball bat. Cactus went so far as to try to try to light his barbwire bat on fire until Eric Bischoff came out and threatened to shut down the whole PPV if Cactus did that. Cactus then decided to up the violence by bringing out a board covered in barbwire, but Orton threw the Evil Baby Powder Of Cheatery to gain the advantage and slam Cactus onto the barbwire board. Ouchies! Orton then set the barbwire board up in the corner and whipped Cactus face first into it. Double Ouchies! Orton then tried to prove his hardcoreness by pulling out some thumbtacks and went to RKO Cactus onto the tacks, but Cactus countered by throwing Orton back first onto the tacks! That was the first time I ever saw somebody go into a pile of tacks with no shirt on and the sight of seeing hundreds of tacks stuck all around the body of Randy Orton was completely unbelievable. Say what you will about Orton, but that was a MAN-SIZED bump. With some extra nuts on the side. The men then brawled up the ramp and Cactus proceeded to hurl Orton off of the stage and threw some table below and followed up with a Cactus elbow from the top of the ramp. That sequence is even more impressive considering that Orton still had a ton of tacks stuck inside of him so you know it must of hurt like a bitch to land on them when he got thrown off the stage. Orton showed a whole ton of guts by kicking out of that elbow and after a couple more minutes of brawling, the match ended when Randy hit an RKO on Cactus on the barbwire bat. This was a bloody, intriguing epic that is just as fun to watch today as it was during its original showing.
