Evolution Schematic 01.05.08: Nidia
Posted by Mathew Sforcina on 01.05.2008

Writer's Notes

For the last time, YES, I am aware of the 2 or 3 matches Warrior had that were longer than 10 minutes. NO, that does not mean I screwed up. 3 out of hundreds does not a difference make. Chyna matches were about the same, he ran like a moron, she didn't, ergo she wins in Stamina. STOP ASKING/COMPLAINING.

Ahem.

Welcome one and all to another Evolution Schematic, the first of the new year. This is cutting into my Mass Effect playing/getting grumpy when it stops working time, so let's get this thing going. Although for the record, No Beautiful Katamari for us PAL region peoples does not make me happy. No, it does not. Really.

Viva Piñata and Virtual Fighter 5 are both really addictive (when they work…)

Overview

Firstly, if you're just here for Hot Texan/Puerto Rican Goodness, here you go then.

Won't be a moment if you want the column itself.

Just gotta placate the masses.

You know how it is.

If you actually want to know about her as a person, and the lessons that can be learnt from her career, well then…

Uh…

It's a short tale of caution. Nidia's career was/is remarkably short, with a couple of major phases and mostly just quiet achievement. Nidia, after winning her dream job, didn't want to risk anything to mess it up. She knew the lows, she was pragmatic, and she played it safe, played politics, and kept her head down. And thus, she never truly gained a major height.

To paraphrase a WWE ad campaign, only those who chase their (true) dreams end up catching them.

Origins- Tex-Rico just doesn't sound right…

Nidia comes from a Puerto Rico background, that's where her family is from and where she was born. But she grew up in Texas, a rough and tumble girl, living in a trailer park, dreaming of a double wide and such other clichés.

As a teenager she moved around a bit, and for a brief time lived in North Carolina, where she dated a young man called Gregory Helms before he dumped her. But she didn't really see her future in the ring, although she was a fan.

That is, she didn't see her future in the ring until the WWF made a ‘reality TV' show…

(Isn't every WWE show a Reality TV show though?)

Debut- She was Tough Enough.

Nidia tried out, earned her spot, competed, trained, worked hard, and then won the first season of WWF Tough Enough, along with Maven. Her time on Tough Enough gave her what had seemed, at first, an impossible dream, a WWF Contract. So, while the afterglow was still fresh, she still had her innocence about her.

Phase 2- Sticking together.

She helped out Maven, assisting him to defeat Tazz and accompanying him to the ring on a few occasions. However, pretty soon she realised that, while this was a dream job, it was still a job.

Phase 3- More training.

And she didn't want to risk losing it. So, she requested and got a spot in WWF developmental, continuing to hone her skills. Sure, it wasn't as glamorous and perhaps not as well paid, but she wanted to be here for a long time, and thus she would play it safe, and trained her butt off.

While she trained, she also hardened. She reverted slightly to her less friendly, more trailer park ways and attitude, since she had to fight and fight hard for what she had. Eventually, she began to date a young man called Jamie Noble, and together, they worked out a plan, a way to get ahead. The WWE, as it was now called, was a very different place from a year ago when she had won Tough Enough. Much had changed, least of which was that 2 new Tough Enough winners were around, both of them women. So Nidia needed to ensure she was safe. So she hatched a plan. A plan to ensure they would land a spot and keep a spot on the main roster.

Phase 4- Stalking A Superhero.

Hurricane, then WWE Cruiserweight Champion, was just getting used to his new digs as a Smackdown Exclusive wrestler when he started getting strange notes and messages. Eventually, they consolidated and revealed Nidia as the source, claiming revenge on his dumping of her. In actuality, she just wanted to get Noble a Cruiserweight Title shot as quickly as possible, and this was how she came up with it. By getting Hurricane mad and attacking him, he demanded and got a match with Nidia's man Noble at King Of The Ring. Nidia made sure it was a Title match. And at KOTR '02, Noble pinned Hurricane to win the title, and Nidia's life was seemingly set.

Phase 5- We're rolling now, we've got CRUISERWEIGHT money!

As Cruiserweight Champ, Noble was rolling in the dough it seems. But when he got an inheritance, coupled with Champion's Money (which then ran out after Noble lost the belt at Survivor Series), then the duo were pimping. He was able to buy Nidia a fine mink coat, and they ate out every second meal, they were two happy campers. Or is that trailers? Regardless, the two ran roughshod over the division while their were champ, but after Noble lost it, they still had the inheritance money, and thus still lived the high life, even if their attempts to regain the belt using Noble's cousin Nunzio failed spectacularly.

Phase 6- Playboy rears it's blonde, well toned head.

2003 was marked for Nidia mostly by having some problems with Torrie Wilson that ran across Smackdown, PPV and Girls Gone Wild PPV. At first it was just simple ‘I'm better looking than you" which ensured that she got photo shoots and such. But when Torrie got into Playboy, that really set Nidia off, and she campaigned long and hard to convince Hef to give her a shot.

This eventually led to Jamie Noble getting the hots for Torrie, offering her cash for sex. Nidia walked out, disgusted, and then Noble won sex with Torrie by beating Billy Gunn at Vengeance. Neither Nidia nor Billy Gunn, Torrie's boyfriend, liked this, and both ended up trying to stop it.

It ended with a foursome.

And somehow, that made the fans like Noble and Nidia.

Phase 7- Let's put a stop to that then!

Billy and Noble would occasionally team up for tag matches, and NOTHING ELSE, but eventually Noble and Nidia would revert back to their old ways, helping Tajiri keep the Cruiserweight belt (and certain adult situations that were implied) then turning on him to try and get it on Tajiri, although that failed, rather spectacularly, when Tajiri blinded Nidia with black mist.

Phase 8- Green disorientates, red burns, black blinds, blue kills, yellow disgusts and white impregnates. Got it.

(And yes, mist has impregnated someone, in HUSTLE. Muta and Yinling had Akebono as their son… Think Japanese CHIKARA.)

Nidia was away from the spotlight for a few weeks as she tried to regain her sight and, since she wasn't doing anything, have her boobs done.

Hey, she's a no-nonsense girl with nothing better to do.

Eventually she returned to ringside, but she was still blinded. At first this seemed to be a hindrance for Noble, as due to his attention being drafted, due to him looking out for Nidia, he would lose matches. This gained both some sympathy.

Until Noble started using Nidia for his own gain, throwing her at his opponents and taking advantage to win. Although some people tried to tell her what he was doing, she refused to believe them, trusting Noble.

However her eyesight returned, and she saw with her own eyes what Noble was doing. So she decided to cut her loses, turning on him twice, costing him the Cruiserweight Title twice, first at the 04 Royal Rumble by ‘accidentally' tripping Noble to give Rey Mysterio the win, then revealing she was no longer blind on the following Smackdown, which again distracted Noble and cost him the match.

Nidia would then ‘get a chance at revenge' at No Way Out, where she had to fight Noble, although he would be blindfolded. Nidia embarrassed him, but then lost after Noble cheated, peaking out from the blindfold then locking in the Trailer Hitch for a very fast tap out.

Almost immediately, Nidia's life took a far more important break than just losing a boyfriend.

Phase 9- Raw.

She was drafted to Raw, and thus finally once again could compete for the Women's Title, which she now saw as her best chance to keep her job, if she stayed in the title hunt, she would be fine.

Nidia would get a couple of chances at the title, being out-witted and out muscled by Trish Stratus at most turns, Trish using a cast, Tyson Tomko and anything she could to keep Nidia away, especially once Nidia threw off the trailer park once and for all and got back to her roots, moving back to Puerto Rico and getting in touch with her inner Hot Tamale. But while she had Maven as a friend, and some fan support, she never got the stars aligned just right to win the Women's title. And since she invested so much on it, she became so focused on winning it, she ended up losing her job when cuts were made in late 2004.

Today- Retired, for now.

Nidia then re-evaluated her life, and decided to travel. She went all over the world, doing the occasional Indy show (including a run in Australia against Gail Kim with World Series Wrestling) but for the most part, she tried to increase her life outside the ring. She is now a mother, and there are no plans, it seems, for her to step back in the ring.

But then every wrestler says that. And almost all of them lie.

Conclusion.

Another short, less than stellar career. What can we learn? It's not a pleasant thing. Nidia had everything right, a home grown talent, attractive, willing to enhance herself, willing to learn, tough, willing to change, and eager to succeed. And yet, she was still expendable. And she never cracked the big time.

Sometimes, things just don't work out.

But if they don't, then don't give up. Stand up, dust yourself off, and try again. And this time, you might just get it. You never know.

And now, another sliver of a fractured view of life, as from the pen of Dave Lovelace...
