411 Fact or Fiction 1.17.08: The Big Show Returning, Chris Harris Leaving, Foley Retiring and More!

THE 411 WRESTLING HALL OF FAME!

  • The 411 Wrestling Hall of Fame has kicked off this week! Make sure to check it out.

  • Welcome back to another week of 411 Fact or Fiction: Wrestling Edition! This week, two 411 writers go to battle as Geoff Eubanks enters the 411 Arena to do battle with Steve Cook!

  • And remember to go to TigerFlashGames.com and play addictive, free flash games when you're bored at work, school, or whenever! Ashish made this place because he loves you.

  • Let's get to it!

    1. WWE RAW not be pre-empted by the Westminster dog show this year is a huge positive for the company's standing with NBC Universal.

Geoff Eubanks: FICTION. So it comes down to the dog show or a dog of a show, huh? J/K. This is going to be something of an off-the-path response, but bear with me (and please note I am not terribly business-minded, it's simply a point of view). Back in the day, when Raw was pulling in 5.0s – 6.0s on a regular basis, WWE's fanbase was so strong and dedicated, USA had the luxury of switching Raw's night and/or time, confident the audience would follow along and tune in. Now, however, when it isn't entirely unheard of for SmackDown! to slightly outdraw the so-called A-show, although Raw provides USA with a solid, consistent number, I hesitate to consider this a mandate of good faith; rather, it seems to me USA has more faith in fans of the Shih Tzu division than the Women's division.

Steve Cook: FACT. I don't know if it's a "huge" positive, but I do know this…I remember when I was a little wrestling fan that watched WWF Monday Night Raw every week. It was often the highlight of my week because I didn't have much else going for me in life. When you're a geek, that's how it is. I remember being so disappointed when Raw would be pre-empted for a stupid dog show. The US Open didn't bother me so much because sometimes a hot female tennis player would be on the show, but there was nothing worthwhile about the dog show. I didn't know how advertising worked back then, and I didn't understand why USA would take my wrestling off the air just so they can show some stupid dogs running around. It sucked. Now that NBC Universal has seen the light and realizes that wrestling gets better ratings than dogs, that makes me happy…even if I don't enjoy Raw as much as I used to. To actually answer the question, the fact that somebody at USA realizes that Raw does better ratings than a dog show can only mean good things for WWE's standing with the network.

    Score: 0 for 1

    2. Chris Harris leaving TNA is a big loss for the company.

Geoff Eubanks: FICTION. And I proclaim that in despondent fashion. Chris Harris leaving TNA *should* be a big loss for the company, but it's not. Breaking up AMERICA'S MOST WANTED should have been a huge springboard for at least one of its members, but their spilt was treated as perfunctory and arbitrary by TNA management. I'm not going to raise any red flags just yet, but Dixie should keep an eye on this situation because it *could* be seen as a harbinger of things to come. Instead of chasing after WWE's most recent release with her nose up their butt laboring under the misapprehension that "X" will bring in viewers because they used to be with the Fed, she needs to start pushing the people who made her franchise in the first place, Harris being one of them.

Steve Cook: FICTION. I'm not taking anything away from Harris' talent, because anybody who knows me knows that I'm a mark for guys out of the Northern Kentucky area, and I'm a big fan of the Wildcat. That being said, TNA wasn't doing a whole hell of a lot with the guy. Could more have been done? Sure, but as much as I like Harris, I don't see him as the kind of guy that you can build a national wrestling company around. He's a solid worker but not great, and his microphone skills aren't the best. Harris is best in a tag team situation, which is why America's Most Wanted was one of the best tag teams of this decade. Hell, you could say they were the best. But when you're not using somebody, it makes their departure not much of a loss because they might as well not have even been there anyway and it wouldn't have made much of a difference. This is the case of Chris Harris, and I hope that he makes one more stop at Shimmers Tavern before going up north.

    Score: 1 for 2

    3. It is being said that 2008 will be Mick Foley's final year wrestling and he will then retire. That being then said, you feel that Mick Foley will return to wrestle in 2009.

Geoff Eubanks: FICTION. At least on a full-time basis. I can see him coming back to do one more angle and then a blow-off at WrestleMania or SURVIVOR SERIES, one of the biggies, but as far as his semi-retirement thing we've seen over the past few years, no, I think Mrs. Foley's baby boy will hang em up…and, as much as it pains me to say it, that's a good thing. Few have as much Mick love as have I, but when he waddled down the ramp on Monday to be Horny Bastard McMahon's partner, I was like, "Oh, for Flair's sake, again?! Mick, dood, you look awful." I don't want to feel that way about one of the greatest performers in the history of the business. There are those like Hogan who come back because he's needy and greedy; Foley's at least, returned to put over young talent like Randy Orton and Edge (hmm…and who are our World Champions…?). I'd love it if he could take a managerial role or if he was given the book on Mondays, but in the ring? Mick, sir, thank you, but you've given enough. You'll never be forgotten and always be revered. Give your body a rest

Steve Cook: FACT. It's like our President says…fool me once, shame on you. Fool me-we can't get fooled again. We've all heard this song and dance before from Mick, haven't we? "Oh, I'm gonna retire and it's actually gonna mean something." Sure, Mick. Whatever you say. Don't get me wrong, Mick Foley is one of my all-time favorite wrestlers, is a fine human being from all accounts and has provided us with too many memories to list here. But don't feed me this retirement garbage because I ain't buying it. And anybody with half a brain won't buy it either, because a Mick Foley retirement means about as much as a Terry Funk retirement. Oh, and one more thing…dude, if you really want to go out on a high note, don't go into that ring 50 pounds overweight and tag team with a midget. Nobody wants that to be the final memory of a Hardcore Legend.

    Score: 1 for 3

    ---SWITCH~!---

    4. Chris Masters will end up in TNA during 2008.

Steve Cook: FACT. Masters is reportedly trying to get into TNA as we speak, and I think he might be a good fit there. In WWE he went about business the wrong way and was never given a chance to get up to the next level. It's not his fault that WWE called him up to the main roster long before he should have been due to his physique and Vince's hard-on for it. And it's not his fault that they instituted a policy that made it impossible for him to maintain the one thing that got him on television to begin with. Sure, he got a big head, but wouldn't you have a big head if you were his age and in the position that he was in? If Masters is going to be anything in this business, he needs to get down and dirty and find out how to really work. TNA, while certainly not the perfect place to do that, can serve that purpose for him. The TNA fans will likely accept him like they accept all the rest of the WWE rejects, and he can perfect his craft on a platform that isn't quite as big as Monday Night Raw. From interviews I've seen, Masters seems like a guy that wants to learn and wants to succeed, and TNA just might be the place for him to do that.

Geoff Eubanks: FICTION. At least I HOPE not. Masters' story in the business thus far has been a sad one, really. He was screwed by his own company, brought up from development too early, saddled with a gimmick he had to break the company's own rules to maintain and then was let go when he couldn't straddle the delicate balance between extremes. Add to that the fact that he was pretty crummy on the mic and was booked in absolute one-dimensional fashion his entire run on two shows and one has to think he was given a raw deal, pardon the pun.

In the aftermath of his WWE release, Masters has shown intelligence, class and drive in that he's not allowed this set back to bury his passion and that's to be commended. Best of all, though, is the fact that he's set his eyes on Japan with the intension of improving his craft, which is a proven method by which raw talent willing to improve can do so. That said, I think it would be a shame for Masters to derail himself from this path, as I think it will serve him VERY well to spend a couple years in Japan in the overall picture. Perhaps 2010 would be a good time for him to set his sites upon returning to America, where he can allow his talent dictate his course, and not a misappropriated gimmick and apathetic company.

    Score: 1 for 4

    5. It has been reported that the Big Show has agreed to or has signed a new deal to return to the WWE. The Big Show returning to WWE is not a big deal for the company.

Steve Cook: FACT. Is Big Show a good performer? Sure. Is he a unique attraction? Sure. Does he have cool entrance music? No doubt about it. Is the Big Show big box office? No. He never drew that much money when he was on top of the company before…I'd place him on the tier below guys like Austin, Rock, Triple H, UT, Foley, etc. It's nice to have the big guy back, but it's not going to make a difference in the ratings or ticket sales. In order for something to be a big deal, it'd have to make both of those things go up. You know whose return would make both ticket sales and ratings go up? The Rock. That would be a big deal. Big Show…not so much. Of course, the WWE fans reading this will probably say Big Show's return will bring the return of the wrestling boom and ratings will go through the roof…I wish it was that easy, but it's not.

Geoff Eubanks: FACT. Again, as with Chris Harris' TNA departure, stated with regret. Quite frankly, I was surprised to hear this news, as, just a few months ago, it seemed, Paul Wight was referring to "Big Show" as his "slave name." However, to the issue at hand, considering the tepid booking treatment Chris Jericho, a talent for who fans have been clamoring to see return to the ring, has received, one can only imagine what's in store for someone like Show, whom no one has really missed, I daresay, and all deference to Mr. Wight. Big Show/Great Khali at WrestleMania 24, anyone? I KNOW…the sleep I've lost praying…

    Score: 2 for 5

    6. TNA made the right call when the booked the Knockouts Title change on Impact last week.

Steve Cook: FICTION. Honestly, they goofed the thing up when they didn't put the title on Kong to begin with. You're supposed to build up the dominant heel as a champion and have the plucky babyface chase the heel to get the belt. TNA reversed it up on us for reasons that defy me, and had Kong destroy the rest of the division while Gail sat around with her belt and waited to get killed. That being said, I didn't mind getting to watch the title change on free television. So why should I get all worked up about this? Sorry Larry, I know this is the part where you would insert this:

But, I got to see a good match on TV for free. If TNA puts more good matches on TV for free, maybe more people will pay money to see even better matches on PPV. It's so crazy that it just might work! So while I say FICTION, I applaud TNA's efforts and wish them the best in their future endeavors.

Geoff Eubanks: FICTION. But are you surprised? I first agreed with this decision when I heard Gail Kim, the Knockouts champion, suffered an injury at the PPV. If Kim is injured, have her drop the belt ASAP, get her into rehab and let her heal up, allow Awesome Kong to run wild with the belt in the meantime, then book a triumphant return for Kim when she's well. Classic, basic booking.

However, if Kim ISN'T injured, then this is just more ass-stupid booking from everyone's second-favorite Vince. This was hailed by EVERYONE as being the best-booked program in TNA, bar none, in eons. Why would TNA give away such an important match on free TV? I mean, holy Hogan-Goldberg, Batman. Okay, not to suggest that Kong/Kim would have touched that blown buy-rate, but, really. Such a shame, because trash stinks all over, not just in a localized manner and if they're doing the ladies this way, when, here to fore, everything's been done superbly, what chance have the men got…?

Mr Cook, there isn't a WWE fan alive who believes that the Big Show will cause a rating boom. But if there is, then I'll have to apologizes to Cook, and consider the possibility that fans out there have lost their minds. The same people who probably thinks Sid Vicious and Jake the Snake still got what it takes to make an impact.

Chris Masters was a dull fest for WWE, in my humble opinion. This might get gasps, but he's as horrible as Lux Luger was back in the days. Yes, Lux Luger was popular, but anyone with steroids type muscles was. I rarely see muscle bound wrestlers succeed without knowing how to work the mic. Bobby Lashley has succeeded, but mostly cause they shoved him their our throats.

I agree Show's not a draw, but I don't agree that no one has missed him. From frequenting various forums it seem like there were plenty of fans, at least in the internet community who were hoping he'd come back, and lot of people who are excited about him coming back now that the news has leaked out (and yes, I know the internet doesn't always represent the majority fanbase). No, he's not going to make a difference in the ratings or anything, but I certainly think that there are plenty of people out there who've missed the big guy.

Free TV matches = ZERO BUYS. Kong vs. ODB = ZERO BUYS.

In regards to the Kim/Kong booking, the only thing that TNA should have done differently was to hype the match for a week and put it on the next Impact. While these two put on a great show, there did not need to be another PPV to change the title. Matches between these two have stayed fresh, but soon they would have been repetitive. Obviously, Kim needed to lose the title soon. With her dropping the title, more Knockouts get thrown into the mix, and they look more legit.

Actually, I have read statistics that state Big Show *is* a draw. Not a massive one, of course, but enough that when his segments came on, people tuned in rather than tuned out. I remember being surprised by it. Big Show being back is definitely a good thing for the WWE.

Just out of curiosity, should I take all the "free tv title change = no buys" talk to mean that a few months of entertaining women's wrestling has changed the entire culture of American professional wrestling to the extent that people are going to buy ppvs to see a women's match (that weren't going to buy it anyway)? I mean when was the last time a women's match made money, or produced "buys", for a predominantly male wrestling company? I'm not saying the train of thought is wrong, just looking for an expansion of the logic behind the statement.

He's not a very big draw but i will be glad to see the Big man back.
i met him back in 1997 "The Giant at the time" when they were in my town filming Thunder for WCW. he was taking on Kevin Nash that night. ive met several wreslers over the years and i would say him and RVD was the nicest wrestlers i met up to date.

Jacob, the highest rated parts of the TNA shows are the women's matches. So, shut up. :)

Oh, the womens matches are the highest rated part of TNA are the women's matches eh? Where did you get that information?

i like mick like everyone else. hell look at his best feuds/jobs and you'll see how much he has helped younger talent. he put over up and comers by the names of the rock, HHH, orton and edge.
he does need to call it quits. his body is in worst shape than most pro-offensive linemen.

It was actually reported on this site several times that with ratings break down that the women's div is a ratings spike.

It appears that kim did at least have a concussion so why the hot shot change. I love odb but I see her as the protective force... ala she'll take the pin in a future to protect Kong's dominance in a three way match.

Don't worry Michelle some of these guys don't get that TNA is bring back women's wrestling stronger than ever, but then again 411mania has to be one of the most positive places I've seen for Kong/Kim. Don't let em' get you down/ :)

FACT! Booking of the knockouts was right call. Kim is injured so they had to take the title off her.

If anything, Foley jobs too much... Beating isn't really that big a deal anymore when you know it's going to happen.

The kim concussion happened during the iMPACT match, and not before. The title switch wasn't injury related.

I like how 411 acts like the woman's title ISN'T a secondary title. Here's a few facts for ya.
Fact: Secondary title changes are VERY common in ANY brand.
Fact: Very few promotions give a secondary title, much less the women's title, a main event spot and make such a big deal out of it, and the FACT that TNA did hype this match, and did make it a big deal was good booking.

You know, you have to give away at least one or two PPV quality matches in order to get folks to buy the PPV's. I know the ROH marks here at 411 don't get that concept, since their precious little indie doesn't have a TV deal, but in the REAL national and global scene, where people HAVE TV deals, they have to rely on more than PPV hype on TV Guide to sell people on paying for something, even if it means getting a free taste.

Stating TNA will pick up Masters is pretty ignorant, too. Say what you want about TNA "picking up WWE's droppings" but so far, every acquisition has wrestled twice as good as they have in WWE. Why? Maybe it's because they like being treated like they're important commodity to a company. I'm sure someone will throw the "TNA Homegrowns" in my face after this, but you can't really say that fresh faces aren't being pushed. I mean, 4 years ago, anyone would've laughed you out of the building if you told them that Frankie Kazarian was main eventing on a nationally broadcast television show.

TNA Knockouts, Fact! There never going to have the main event on a PPV, so booking them, with Kim injured, as a main even on Impact was the right call.

Kids, it ain't hard to figure out that Big Show will be returning this Monday on RAW. Who the hell else do you think they'd put up against Trips as a "mystery opponent"? He's goddamn THOR for Jeebus' sake.

It's no coincidence that Foley's only win in the last several years came against Carlito, and Ric Flair is undefeated against Carlito after over two years of on-off feuding and fighting.

Kim was injured during Monday's match, so it did make sense to make the switch. Besides, Kim can eventually chase down Kong upon her return. Hopefully TNA will be smart enough to wait on the blowoff match until Lockdown.

What I like among this discussion is that people are actually talking more about the actual wrestling instead of, "How does she look in those jeans?" BS that we fans have been fed from the 'e'.

Great to hear that Masters is getting better in the ring. I think his time in Japan will serve him well. Who knows, perhaps when he does return to the states he will be booked like Tomko. Who ever thought that he would get a pushed based on the way he was booked in the past?

"Does he (Big Show) have cool entrance music? No doubt about it."
What?! That is terrible music. I remember the first time all of my friends and I heard it, we all cringed & thought, Well that can't possibly last long, thinking they would change it soon. Well, year after year, when Rock, Undertaker, & everyone kept getting new, updated music, Big Show's horrible theme remained unchanged. If he does return, they've really gotta do something about that ridiculousness.

I approve of Kong going over Gail, mainly because it stops the fued from being Gail Hogan vs Awesome Kong Bundy. Now they need a nice long build to Gail geting the belt back so she can move to a fued with Roxxi. ODB appears to be getting the Lance Hoyt "People in the Impact Zone love her for no discernable reason" momentum - pleasing the home crowd doen't = buys or ratings.

Thanks Michelle, thats a piece of information I didn't have before. Not sure it completely changes my opinion (there are lots of things on television that get good ratings that I'm not sure people would pay to see). Don't get me wrong, I have loved the Knockout division so far, but comparing Kim/Kong to Goldberg/Hogan seemed a bit much. I will say that, because it's something we have never seen before for an extended time, I hope women's wrestling gets to that level.

Big Show might not be "a draw like The Rock", but I for one am happy to hear he will be back and I would actually like to see him make the triumphant return at the Rumble and WIN it (if anything, partially because the other few guys, who could credibly win it, HBK, HHH (yes, he will probably get in too), Undertaker, Batista, have already won, while he has usually been at best "one of the runner ups").

Please, someone change Big Show's ring music before he comes back. He needs something with the same beat as Demolition's old music. Hmmm, maybe he could come back with a Demolition style wardrobe, and just punish people, before using a new finishing move. I'm sick of everyone's choke slams, give him something like a powerbomb or torture rack submission. Plus, I hope he wins more this time.

Look At JERICHO's Return,Do You Really Think BIG SHOWS is going to be any better?I dont. He'll return as a "Suprise"enterant in the RUMBLE,get a pop from The MSG fans, probabily dominate the rumble for a bit until he is eliminated by Kali or Kane or Mark Henry or Big Daddy V and then it will be over as quick as it started.OR he wins the RUMBLE,callenges PUNK for the Velocity Title Wins It back at WM24 and PUNK goes Into THe IC or US title picture where he belongs.

Who says Kong/Kim is over? Or that this last match was the blow-off? Quantify how this fued is more over than most in TNA, the impact zone tends to react to everything, segment ratings is hardly indisputable, and the opinions of this community are not necessarily representative of the wrestling community at large. Again, understand I am just making an argument because it seems this concept of "that won't make any money" is bandied about an awful lot, and I just wonder if it isn't overused exponentially as a way for certain individuals to criticize things that they don't like and making it sound objective instead of subjective. Plus I enjoy a good argument, especially when I disagree with what I am defending, it's more fun that way.

    1. If big show comes back he should go to Raw, Smackdown has it's 2 giants, Khali and Henry, while ECW's small roster probably couldn't afford another dominant giant character. Raw only has two giants both of whom are very questionable as main eventers, Umaga and Snitsky, both of them can pull off a main event, but with Snitsky practically being allergic to championships and Umaga stuck as Vince's favorite thug, Big Show could do well as the giant there.

I wouldn't exactly go bananas about RAW replacing the dog show this year. If they REALLY want to impress me, then I'd like to see them try to replace the dog show NBC runs on Thanksgiving every year.

I consider Big Show to be a fun mid-carder who can occaisionally be bumped up to the main event when needed. Sorta like Kane.

I actually liked Chris Masters. I just think his heel persona was lacking. I think it would have worked better for both wrestlers if it was Masters that turned face in his feud with Carlito. Masters just seems like a face guy to me.

Honestly, the IWC in general needs to get over the fact that Austin and/or The Rock are not going to wrestle again. This reminds me of the NBA waiting for another Micheal Jordan. It is the exact same with wrestling right now, everyone is waiting for the next Austin or The Rock.

Geoff, I gotta say...great minds think alike! Here's what I said to Wilcox about the Big Show on his last column...

"Here's what I'm thinking as far as Show goes. He's always been billed as the big man of the fed (umm..hello? "The Big Show"?) Well who is one person that is being built up as a huge, unstoppable monster? The Great Khali. In my eyes, this whole Hornswaggle/Khali/Finlay deal has to end sometime because it's run his course. I mean, they're down to arm wrestling contests now...seriously, it's over. Sooo to cap it off, you set up one final blow off match between Finlay and Khali (Shillelagh on a Pole? Cage match? Hornswaggle in a cage above the ring and if Khali wins he gets to eat him for dinner? Something.) Khali wins and goes after Hornswaggle one way for another, gets his hands on him and he's about to give him the big chop. Hand is raised in the air, he does his crazy Indian man yell, and then... "WELLLLLL....WELL IT'S THE BIG SHOW!!" Sure, Khali sucks in the ring but I really think Show could carry the match like Cena carried his matches with Khali. Have the big man show down happen at Wrestlemania. After that, you have Kane doing nothing, Kane and Show were once a tag team...put them back together and have them contend for the belts. You could even have them feud with Big Daddy V and Mark Henry. "

TNA made the right call in the title switch. I read another column and he put it perfectly. When is 411 gonna get with it? Everyone has to subscribe to the church of Csonka? No buys? No one was buying for that match, THEY'D ALREADY RAN IT TWICE ON PAY PER VIEW! God, the people on this site are so ignorant to anything in the wrestling business. That match wa sa give away to see FUTURE Gail/Kong matches. Many people didn't know what they could do because they didn't order the PPV. Now they CAN and they WILL. Which means this move directly translates into MANY BUYS! Morons.

ODB is also the hottest female act in TNA, so it makes PERFECT sense for her to challenge for the belt. Get with it 411!
