The Triple Threat 1.20.08: The 78th Edition - Undeniable, Big Show, Impact and More
Posted by David Martell on 01.20.2008

The Triple Threat is back. Sorry we didn't have a column last week. We did have one put it was not put up because two of our topics had false information. Zach is out this week with some computer problems but with have a fill in with our ex-triple threater Sean Garmer. Hope you guys enjoy!

Topic # 1 The Big Show recently signed a new WWE contract. What are your thoughts on this?

David Martell: I think that its great to see the big guy back in the WWE. Supposedly he lost a lot of weight trying to become a boxer so that is great news. I hope that he will be able to be in the Royal Rumble. He has always been one of the best participants in the rumble. He could be used on either show but I would prefer him to be on Smackdown to give them another upper card wrestler. I can't wait to see his return.

Alex Mattis: Weeeellll, this is some big news. It looks like the big man is heading back to the E. For what? I'm not too sure, I don't know if this was the E's idea or Show or both. It will be interesting to see how he comes back and where he goes. His title run in ECW was pretty good and I hope they book him in a proper role upon his return and not make a joke out of him like they have done in the past.

Sean Garmer: I guess Big Show needed some money or something? Because it seemed like he was set on being done with WWE. David told me that he has lost a considerable amount of weight, and that's a wonderful thing to hear, maybe it was in anticipation for a return? Regardless, I'm sure it will help him in the ring. The great thing about Big Show is that not only can he still draw somewhat, but he also has no problem putting over people when needed, and he always works good in the tag team environment. I haven't been watching wrestling regularly, but I wouldn't be surprised if he gets involved with the storyline between Khali and Hornswoggle, as a sort of Enforcer for the little guy. If he's not on RAW, I don't really see a spot for him, he's not needed on SmackDown or ECW. Either way I'm sure the fans will be thrilled to hear that music and see the Big man make his return to the squared circle.

Topic # 2 Last weeks TNA Impact drew their highest rating to date with a 1.22 cable rating. What does this mean for TNA?

David Martell: This is great news for TNA and it almost surprises me that TNA is growing. It really wasn't that much bigger then their last highest rating but I guess you have to grow a little at a time. I personally don't watch to much TNA because the bad really out weighs the good. I do think its funny that when I was reading this rating, they constantly refer to ECW's ratings acting like that's a major victory.

Alex Mattis: While I can't understand why, I can see that TNA is continuing to grow. But rather than take advantage of the fact that their audience is swelling and trying to put out good things that will keep new fans hooked, the continue to provide only a momentary sizzle that fans will ultimately turn away from. You've got the numbers, keep 'em up and keep 'em strong.

Sean Garmer: The wrestling on this show was apparently better than it has been, and I guess with all those clean finishes it helped get .1 more viewers this week. The sad thing is, that its still getting that low numbers with two hours on its plate. Honestly, the storylines I keep reading coming out of these shows are ludicrous. Samoa Joe is almost to the point of "just a guy", AJ Styles whole dumb storyline about choosing what to do, if he won, and that involved giving the freaking champion a two month title defense break? Yeah, I think a mosquito could have figured out AJ wasn't going to win with that. I don't understand these silly skits, in fact I don't understand TNA period, what matters is next week, if the rating drops, this is meaningless. What's even more sad, is that as long as TNA has had TV, that we are talking about a 1.2 being a ratings record.

Topic # 3 ROH's Undeniable PPV came out this weekend. What are your thoughts on the card and the PPV itself?

David Martell: First off, I am going to lead you to Csonka's 4 Rs because it is a great review of the show. This is one of ROH's biggest shows and the matches show that. Its great to see that Nigel won the title against Morishima in what I heard was a great match. You also get Danielson vs. Chris Hero and Aries vs. Strong; two main event caliber matches. This is a great way to start ROH in 2008 and I hope they continue to pull out strong PPVs as the year continues.

Alex Mattis: One of the biggest PPV's ROH has put out thus far which features the match that shifted the tides of Ring Of Honor, the match where Takeshi Morishima lost the ROH world title to Nigel McGuinness. The world title situation as been rather shaky since this match, but the match itself was said to have been excellent. I found it odd how well these two mesh together. Here's to hoping for some good numbers for ROH and all the best with their PPV's in 2008.

Sean Garmer: Its great to see ROH with another PPV, and it seems that this one went well. Chris Hero vs. Bryan Danielson, Roderick Strong vs. Austin Aries, and Nigel vs. Morishima all on one show, sounds like a dandy. The numbers should be pretty good for ROH, but even if they aren't, the fans can't argue with another great night of wrestling.

Topic # 4 John Cena might end up playing a role at this year's Wrestlemania. How do you feel about this situation?

David Martell: They should really save Cena's return for later because the E really doesn't need him for Mania. He is the biggest name in wrestling today and his return should be something special. They should have him return on an episode of RAW or maybe a run in on a smaller PPV. It should be something special and if they waste it on some role at Wrestlemania then his return will have no meaning.

Alex Mattis: Eh, this would only be done to boost numbers and he probably would do next to nothing. I think an event as large as Cena's return should be saved for an event that isn't huge already. Mania is Mania, it doesn't need Cena's return to make it bigger. Personally, I think it would be genius for the E to keep Cena's return a secret and create a real shocking moment out of it. So to answer the original question, Cena doesn't need to have a part in WrestleMania this year.

Sean Garmer: I kinda agree with Alex on this. He's not going to wrestle, and he's not an old legend such as Stone Cold or Mick Foley. A return as a special referee would be a total waste. Wrestlemania doesn't need it, and it would be more important for him to return for a RAW or lesser PPV boost. Unless he's going to pull a Roddy Piper and make a surprise return to turn the tide in the Main Event it is unnecessary for him to be there. He should make his return, when he's ready to go in the ring, and they can find a suitable storyline to get him involved. It will do much of nothing to the PPV buys to include him and it takes away from what a surprise return could do.

Topic # 5 JR just signed a two-year deal with the WWE. How do you feel about this?

David Martell: Two more years of good ole' JR sounds great to me. I honestly cant imagine watching a PPV without the guy and it will be a sad, sad day when he finally retires. If I were the WWE I would keep him as long as possible. He is a great announcer, one of the best of all time, and he always knows what he is talking about.

Alex Mattis: Well, glad to hear that the veteran voice of the E will be sticking around for a little longer. The E is starving for good announcing and JR is pretty much their last hope now that JBL is wrestling again. Is it too much to ask for JR to start teaching classes so that talentless stiffs like Michael Cole and Todd Grisham can learn how to at least fake knowing what they're talking about.

Sean Garmer: I love JR, and its good to see that he will be around RAW for a few more years. I don't loathe Michael Cole like most, but without JBL it wouldn't be as fun to see him move over to be the lead man at RAW. Leaving JR and King on RAW, helps WWE find a difficult replacement for JR, my pick would be Joey Styles, but that's not gonna happen. JR is the greatest announcer in Wrestling history, and his voice makes the big matches memorable. Glad to know, we will be able to hear him for some more years to come.

That it for this week. Next week we have the Royal Rumble Edition of the column. Hopefully Zach will get his computer up and running. Don't forget that RAW goes HD this week so if you are lucky and own an HD TV definitely check it out. Have a great week of wrestling. Bye!

I,m just worried that Cena will get booed, because all the "cool" people like to boo him no matter what.

Like to see Big Show back soon. Him and Lashley should be kept as suprise entrants in the Rumble. Also, J.R. has his flaws, like calling the whisper in the wind the twist of fate, but his voice is memorable all right. Good Ol' J.R. hanging around a little longer is only a good thing!

I hope SuperCena comes back at Wrestlemania, wins the WWE, World, IC, and US Titles, and squashes the entire roster month after month after month and holds both belts for a jillion years! Y'know, just like he did in 2007 because that NEVER got old! I also hope he develops a new finisher more powerful than the DEVASTATING fireman's carry or the World's Worst STF (TM)!

Good column guys, I agree that having Big Show back is good and I wanna see him on Smackdown. Raw already has alot of the star power (HHH, HBK, Orton, Jericho, JBL etc) where as the Edge/Taker/Batista feud has given us good matches but could get stale post-Mania and Show could help freshen things up,plus he has history with Taker & teamed with Edge (Back when Edge was on SD! in '02-03)

i think YouStayClassy confused Cena with HHH. Which one held two titles at once again...?

i think Cena must have cockblocked Youstayclassy at a frat party. lol.

Well, not to be a smart ass, but Cena held two titles at once before
Mania last year when he was the WWE Champ and one half of the World Tag Team Champs with HBK - burn!

Considering how hard Cena works, he deserved both titles. I TRIPPLE DOG DARE YA to top that!

Posted By: Capt. Smooth (Guest)  on January 21, 2008 at 04:05 PM

Great burn, Smo! Or, not really... holding the tag belt and world title belt is nothing truly significant. holding the intercontinental belt and world belt is. only two people have done it... and HHH happens to be one of them. he also ends up in seemingly every angle going on.

I'm kinda excited to see Big show back in the mix. Don't get me wrong he can have his share of clunky matches. But show v. Khali at wrestlemania has the potential to be a train wreck of Brock/Goldberg porportions. I love great wrestling but I also love wrestling that's so horrible its great.

Big Show will be good if they can do with him what they had him do right before he left. him as ECW champ was good stuff.

The wrestlemania Crowd is NOT a casual crowd. they are the HARDCORE wrestling fans and MARKS. If Cena makes an appearance, he will be booed out of the building

Seeing as the TNA audience is growing, and they really are a start-up company against a monopoly, I think using ECW as a measuring stick of success makes sense lol Impact doesn't get the exposure or promotion ECW's show does to fans, so for them to take over the WWE's third brand in the ratings is quite an achievement for a promotion, whom, 6 years ago, didn't exist.
