Can They Be Champ? 02.10.08: WWE and the Elimination Chambers of Secrets
Posted by Mike Minotti on 02.10.2008

Well, it looks like the No Way Out will be having not one, but two elimination chambers at No Way Out. I think some feel like they may be stretching the gimmick match a bit thin, but considering we haven't had a decent elimination chamber match since January 2006, I don't really mind. Besides, it's a decent way to figure out who the number one contenders will be at WrestleMania without making one brand feel less important than the other. I mean what if Raw had an elimination chamber and Smackdown just had some lame tournament?

Also, this is going to help the No Way Out PPV immensely. Remember last year's main event? I don't, let me look it up real quick…

Oh boy, an inter-promtional tag team match that wasn't for anything. John Cena and Shawn Michaels vs. Batista and Undertaker? Thrilling. Especially considering that those men tagged a total of about a dozen times on Raw and Smackdown leading up to WrestleMania. Cena and Michaels were the tag champions after all.

Why don't we talk a bit predictions a bit? But first, podcast plug!

The monthly TNA conference call with Karen Angle is up.

Before we talk about No Way Out, let's revisit my Royal Rumble predictions once again.

#1 and #2 entrants: HBK and Mr. Kennedy.

Well, I was half right. Starting with Taker as the number one man was actually a really cool choice, especially with HBK being second. Letting both men go so long really helped the whole first half of the rumble. Mr. Kennedy would actually end up being the #23 entrant.

Final Four: HHH, Undertaker, Batista, and Mr. Kennedy.

Well, I got HHH and Batista right. Mr. Kennedy was in the final five, so… kind of close, I guess. Also, I obviously didn't predict Cena's surprise return. Too bad, it would have been real impressive if I did. The final four were. HHH, Batista, John Cena, and Kane.

Longest time in the ring: Mr. Kennedy.

Well, this one was sort of counting on Kennedy being either the number one or two entrant. Batista was actually the 2008 Royal Rubmle iron man. He entered from #8, and lasted 37:42. Don't take my word for it, but I think that is one of the shorter iron man runs in recent rumble history.

Shortest time the ring: Santino Marella.

I was pretty close. Santino only lasted 25 seconds. Shelton Benjamin actually had the shortest run, with only 18 seconds. Boor Shelton, so much for the "Golden Standard".

Surprise entrant: Big Show.

I think almost everyone was expecting Big Show to be the #30 entrant. Of course, the surprise entrant would end up being John Cena. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Alright, I got two of them half right. So I got one right.

Let's talk about the elimination chambers a little bit. It's time to make some more predictions to later regret.

Actually, I feel pretty good about these predictions. I think just about everyone else is calling for the same thing. HHH will win the Raw elimination chamber, and Cena will win the WWE title from Orton, setting up Cena vs. HHH at WM24. We knew that the WWE wanted to do this match last year, but couldn't due to HHH's injury. Now that HHH is healthy, and Cena is (hopefully) healthy, it looks like they can finally have their matches.

Honestly, the only other Raw main event I would have thought likely for WM was Orton vs. Cena, and since they're doing that at No Way Out, it's out of the window. I personally would have rather seen that match at WM24. Orton's title run was surprisingly good, and I think it's a bit of a bummer that he's going to come so short of being the champ at WrestleMania.

What other elimination chamber participant can you see being in a WM main event with Cena? Jericho isn't hot enough to main event such an important show at the moment, just recently returning to action. The same goes for JBL (I don't think anyone wants to see a WM21 rematch between Cena and JBL).Umaga… well, WrestleMania main event material he aint. HBK? Well, HBK has been playing second fiddle to HHH for awhile now.

HHH will win. I feel just as sure about as I felt about him winning the Royal Rumble this year.

See what I did there?

Now, how about the Smackdown elimination chamber? Well, let's assume that Edge will be the champion going into WM24. I don't see Rey Mysterio main eventing a WrestleMania anytime too soon.

Obviously, Edge vs. Undertaker seems like the most likely main event for WM24. People have been predicting that match for a long time now. Now, the only thing that could upset it is if they go with that Taker/HBK match at WM that some have predicted. I don't think they will. People were reading into their Royal Rumble interactions a bit much. I think it was simply meant to play on their Rumble performances of the previous year. I don't think it meant anything more than that.

Batista vs. Edge would be the next most likely WM24 match, but that has already been done quite a bit in 2007. But who knows, I mean, I have a hard time imagining what else Batista is going to do at WM. Finlay is obviously working towards some sort of program with Vince, so he's out. MVP is likely to defend his US Title, probably against Matt Hardy. Great Khali or Big Daddy V? No.

I wish these predictions were a little more wild or difficult to make, but they are what they are. HHH will win the Raw elimination chamber, and Taker will win the Smackdown elimination chamber.

You know, with two elimination chambers and two title matches, No Way Out looks like it will be a pretty good show this year.

Oh, how about a quick word about Against All Odds? The main event will be Angle vs. Christian, which is a main event that I actually wouldn't mind seeing. Now, I think Angle will be the likely winner here, since a continued Joe/Angle feud has practically been given more importance on Impact than the Angle/Christian feud. Expect Angle to win, and expect Joe to do something screwy.

You know, I haven't been covering TNA all that much lately. I admit, I only watch the show occasionally these days. If you want me to cover TNA more, tell me so in the comments section, and I'll make a greater effort to do so.

If you want to post comment, feel free to e-mail me.

Have a good week, everyone. See you next time.

Mike, nice Harry Potter reference! I honestly think that Snape will win. We need more puns in wrestling.

"Well, I got HHH and Taker right." you mean,HHH and Batista

So, Jeff Hardy didn't even rate a mention.

I'm not expecting him to win but he has more chance of winning the RAW chamber then Batista does of winning the SD/ECW Chamber

Mike,
Taker and Umaga weren't in the final four.

no mention of Jeff Hardy?

numerous mistakes in rumble article

very poor article overall, especially since you fail to even mention the second favourite for the Raw Chamber

very poor

i would say HHH and Hardy have a pretty damn great chance of winning the chamber (of course you didn't even mention Hardy)...forget about Cena for 2 seconds and think of who else is the WWE's hottest commodity right now...Hardy...did you hear his huge pop on monday?? I personally wouldn't care how amazing the undercard for wrestlemania would be (except Flair's pending final match), if it's going to be Cena v. HHH then i'm not going to buy it....i just dont care...but if it was say Cena/Hardy or even Orton/Hardy, i would pay for that...i want to see something different, thats what makes people pay! And who wouldn't pay to see Hardy going over Cena?? I wouldn't mind if he dropped the title a month later, just give him his big chance for once

Jeff Hardy has zero chance of winning the Elimination Chamber...like it should be.

I never criticize a writer. But they're are quite a few mistakes in here. And you never mention Hardy, yet you give a nod to BDV and Khali. To each his own, but HHH put Jeff Hardy over...clean. That's got to amount to somethin'.

Posted By: Rick Landis (Guest)  on February 10, 2008 at 02:24 PM

I'd pay to see cena go over hardy

Posted By: token (Guest)  on February 10, 2008 at 02:30 PM

Mike, final four were actually Cena, Triple H, Batista & KANE

Guys, thanks for the final four corrections. Undertaker was a typo, but for some reason I did think that Umaga was in the final four. It was kind of hard to remember, since this year more emphasis was placed on the final three. Also, I did goof up and forget to talk about Jeff Hardy, which was a big blunder considering how over he's gotten these days. Still, I don't think he'll be winning the Elimination Chamber. Cena vs Hardy would be interesting, but I don't think the WWE is willing to take such a risk instead of going with the much safer Cena/HHH main event. Jeff will probably be the runner-up in the chamber. As for Jeff's future, I think he has a good chance of being the next Mr. Money in the Bank. Sorry for the careless errors, guys. Thanks for calling me out on them.

Uhh he said that.

Was the "false info" that Stephanie gave Lagana the Big Shows return. Because if it is real, Batista vs. Big Show could be done. It has a Kane vs. Khali kind of appeal to them. Or hell even Show vs. Khali.

Posted By: Eric (Guest)  on February 10, 2008 at 03:04 PM

To clarify, I have since updated the column to add the real final four.

Personally, I think HHH and Taker win the Chambers. Cena wins the title match by DQ, Orton "re-injures" him (actually, puts Cena on the shelf to heal his still-not-100%-healed real injuries), gains himself a ton of heat (yes, there are still people who like Cena), setting up Edge-Taker and HHH-Orton for WM. Cena returns for real at some point before Summerslam and gets the strap back at SS, if not sooner.

Just a thought.

I can't believe nobody is calling Orton vs. Cena vs. HHH for WM. Other predictions:

Edge vs Taker
Jericho vs JBL
HBK vs Flair
MVP vs Matt Hardy
Vince vs Finlay
CM Punk vs Chavo
MITB: Batista/Jeff Hardy/Kennedy/Rey Mysterio/Shelton Benjamin/Morrison
Yang/Wang (c's) vs. London/Kendrick (we can dream)

its a good card at no way out and hopfully is going to be betta thn last yaer.

i am the #1 cena fan (well i say i am) but i dont want him winning, if booking went my way this is wot mania would look like:

Orton v Batista - WWE Title, Edge v HHH - WHT, They decide to switch brands after nwo. Cena v Flair, HBK v Taker, JBL v KYJ - texas bull rope, Mat Hardy v MVP - US Title, Finlay v Vince in some match for Horny boys custody, MITB with Jeff n Kennedy being the options to win. No ecw title there as ECW sucks. Maybe, just maybe, Kane v Benjamin in some Gimmick match

Posted By: jacob (Guest)  on February 10, 2008 at 07:19 PM

Id like to see Joe pull a Stone Cold and declare himself the champ! At this point the way TNA has screwed up Joe's career I think this would be the best way to put the title on Joe!

Posted By: GUESTINGINGit (Guest)  on February 10, 2008 at 07:22 PM

Not only will Hardy win, but he will be in the final 2 with HHH, and win clean.

Posted By: Joel Yeomans (Guest)  on February 10, 2008 at 09:49 PM

I'm with Joel, if they haven't been building Hardy for a Mania spot, then what the hell have the been building him for? I'm tipping HHH to lose to Hardy clean as the last two in the chamber. HHH has been teaming with/putting Jeff over for the last few months. There has to be more to it.

Posted By: Hon Rillings (Guest)  on February 10, 2008 at 11:17 PM

maybe orton will beat cena at no way out and it'll be Triple H vs Randy Orton for the WWE Title, while John Cena can somehow feud with Batista setting up one of the biggest dream matches today at the biggest show of the year...BATISTA vs JOHN CENA in a non title match at mania sounds pretty good to me. since wwe likes to put on a dream match or some at mania.(angle/hbk, rock/stonecold, hitman/hbk, kane/undertaker)

Posted By: Jake (Guest)  on February 10, 2008 at 11:25 PM

ROFLMAO at the people thinking than HHH will JOB and CLEAN to Hardy TWICE .

Not only will HHH win and he will pin HARDY CLEAN for it at The EC and will main event Mania against Cena .

You've got to be damn dumb to think Jeff Hardy stands a chance against Trips in the EC .

HHH will get the rub on the RAW EC and Taker on the SD ! one

GUARANTEED

I think that the Jacob guy has a good view on NWO. But at Mania dont have Kane v Benjamin

If there is enough room for 1 more match (which i doubt) have Phenoix v Candice

that would be a good mania :D

Orton v Batista - WWE Title
Edge v HHH - WHT
Cena v Flair - Retirement match
HBK v Taker - Inter-promo
M Hardy v MVP - US Title - 2 / 3 falls
JBL v Y2J - Texas Bull Rope
Vince v Finlay - Street Fight for Hornswoggles Custody

And if there needs be another match

Phenoix v Candice - Womens title

No Way Out having 2 chambers is fun and much better than usual sure, but if anyone wins aside from Triple H and Undertaker I'll be stunned...and for that reason it's as good as ruined seeing as it's so predictable. The same goes for Wrestlemania. I can't believe how much I couldn't wait for last year with the build to Cena & Michaels and to a slightly lesser extent Undertaker & Batista. Nobody knew what would happen. And what do we have this year, Cena & Triple H and Undertaker & Edge...to quote Happy Gilmore "WHOOPEDY-DO!" even Orton & Triple H would suck seeing as it's been done twice only at No Mercy 07. If WWE really goes ahead with those and doesn't attempt a HUGE last minute swerve then this will be the most flat and stale Wrestlemania in years. I'm so bored with WWE right now.

Posted By: Col (Guest)  on February 11, 2008 at 11:53 AM

yeah Jacob and Benny
those cards look good
dont have Kane v Benjamin and the womens match
Batista v Orton wil draw in the money, not really sure about Edge n HHH, i think that HBK v Taker would also be a dream match, Cena going over on flair :)

Yeah lets hope it happens

but i doubt it, most likly HHH and Taker will win at NWO
