Can They Be Champ? 03.02.08: The Other Four MitB Participants
Posted by Mike Minotti on 03.02.2008
WrestleMania 24 is less than a month away, and we only have four people announced for MitB 4. Inside, Mike gives his picks for who should fill in the other four spots. He also does a little ranting on No Way Out's EC matches and the sad state of WWE heels.
Well, it looks like the WM24 card is finally shaping up. We have seven matches announced so far, and I'm still expecting some sort of McMahon, JBL, Finlay, and Hornswoggle match to be announced. We might also get an ECW title match, although with CM Punk fighting Chavo for his title next Tuesday, I'm not sure where things are going to go. If, say, they don't have that match, I'm guessing we'll see Punk in the MitB ladder match. Chavo… well, if he's still champion, I hope they wouldn't put him in a match where the goal is to get a shot to become a champion. Of course, they already put him in the Royal Rumble, so who knows.
I find it a bit odd that after announcing three people for the MitB ladder match the first week after No Way Out (Jeff Hardy, Mr. Kennedy, and Shelton Benjamin), that we only had one new entrant announced this week (Chris Jericho). I hope they get around to announcing everyone involved in this match sooner rather later.
Speaking of which, that leaves us four empty spots. Wouldn't it be fun if I tried to predict who would fill those spots?

By the way, I noticed some strange Spanish wrestling site stole my image. Take a look here. Should I be upset, or flattered?
Anyways, we have four spots to fill. So far we have three Raw guys and one ECW guy. I think it's important that we get a Smackdown guy in there. Who should it be? I think MVP is a logical choice. He still has a firm spot on the upper-mid card, despite not actually winning any of his matches lately and being made to look like crap in the EC match at No Way Out. Would it have hurt them so much to let MVP eliminate one person? You know, that's the reason why I liked the Raw EC so much more than the Smackdown one. Everyone in the Raw EC looked good (well, JBL didn't exactly look amazing, but he didn't look terrible). Umaga was on a path of destruction that was only stopped after he got hit by EVERYONE'S FINISHING MOVE! God, I love finishing move montages. I'm a total mark for that stuff. SWEET CHIN MUSIC! CODE BREAKER! PEDIGREE! SWANTON! My whole living room was jumping up and down like crazy. Also, don't correct me if I got the order of the finishing moves wrong, I assure you I'm not claiming to remember exactly how it went down.
My point is that it took a lot for them to take Umaga out, and even before he did he was looking like a monster. I still remember that sick spot where he bashed Jericho's head through one of the pods. Jericho looked good because he got to start the match with HBK, and he also got to pin Umaga. HBK looked good because he, again, started the match and went a long way. Hardy got to kick out of the pedigree. I also marked out for that big time.
On the Smackdown side, however, the only two guys who looked good were Batista and Taker, who both started and ended the match. Thank god we're keeping Batista safe for his high profile match against Umaga at WM24. I don't know, maybe I shouldn't complain. We did get that cool tombstone piledriver reversal. And, at the end of the day, maybe that's all that Undertaker matches are about. Cool reversals into tombstones. They'll be thinking of new ways to pull those off long after my hollow words have disappeared from this net.
Ok, that was a bit of a tangent. My point is that MVP needs to be in MitB, and he needs to look strong in it. I mean, what is the other option? Have him defend his US title? I don't see who he could defend it against, unless Matt Hardy suddenly came back. The problem there is that Hardy would surely be booked to win that match, and I don't think a victory over MVP is going to mean that much unless we make the character look strong again.
You know what the problem with so many WWE heels is? They all have this "lot of talk but can't back it up" thing. Randy Orton had that problem for a long time until he was finally turned into a big threat again (thanks to all the head kicking he started doing last year). Mr. Kennedy has that gimmick. MVP has that gimmick. Hell, even Edge, our freaking WORLD HEAVY WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP, has to depend on cheating to win just about every single high profile match he's in. Come on guys, we really can't let Edge beat Rey Mysterio cleanly? Even when you know he has to look strong for an upcoming feud with Taker? I mean, really guys? Why can't a heel who isn't a "monster" be dominant in the ring anymore? I'm tired of it. And then they wonder why they have such a hard time getting people like Kennedy to the main event. Their solution is always to have him be apart of some elaborate angle. "Hey, let's make Mr. Kennedy McMahon's murderer/accomplice/son, and then he'll be over!" I have a crazy idea! Maybe if Mr. Kennedy racked up a lot of wins, he would get over! Kind of like that one time when he beat five former champions on Smackdown, which gave him momentum all the way to winning last year's MitB. Oh, and wins against Super Crazy and Brian Kendrick don't count. Val Venis, too. God, Val Venis in a MitB qualifying match…. God. Let's not even go there.
Alright, maybe I should finally fill in MitB spot #6. Well, I think we should have at least one more ECW guy. Now, assuming that CM Punk and Chavo are having their own match, I think John Morrison would be a great choice. He's shown that he can hang in ladder matches before, and he definitely has a high spot on ECW's card. I think it would be a big waste to not have him be a part of WM24, and this seems like the most logical place to put him. Hey, you know what else? If John Morrison made it clear that he wanted to win so he could have a shot at the ECW Title, we may even actually increase the value of that decrepit belt!
Let's get another Smackdown guy in the match. This time it's going to come down to "who doesn't have anything else to do, but should be in WM". I think this qualifies Kane. Besides, I'm not even sure who else from Smackdown to put in the match. Kane has been in this match before, and when motivated he can still perform well. I mean, he has to do better than he did at last year's WM. Speaking of which, I know Khali doesn't have anything to do at WM24, but please don't put him in this match. Please….
Ok, we have one more spot. We have three Raw guys, two Smackdown guys, and two ECW guys. Well, Smackdown is a more important brand than ECW, but besides maybe Chuck Palambo, I can't think of anyone decent to put in this match. A sad sign of Smackdwon's troubled mid card. I think ECW can offer better choices. Since we already have Morrison in the match, I say we go ahead and add the Miz. If we don't, he'll look like the weak half of the team. Besides, I think being in a big match like this can really benefit Miz. It also means we can that tag team "will they or won't they work together?" thing going on. Good stuff.
Alright, that does it. I've added MVP, John Morrison, Kane, and Miz to the match. There are our eight participants. What do you guys think? Who would you add in the match? Did I add someone you want to stay the hell away from MitB?
Considering Matt Hardy has just returned at a house show involving MVP, it looks like we will get that MVP v Matt match at WM.

yeah, i'd much rather have MVP and Matt fight than have MVP in the MitB match. i do, however, love ur idea of having the Miz and Morrison in there. Kane being in there too is a decent idea. the thing i don't like is how smackdown doesn't have enought ppl that could be possibilities. Noble or Palumbo, maybe, but thats very questional. Elijah Burke would do very well in there, and they could use this to get him back on track. i'm not saying have him win, but he could pull off some cool stuff and have ppl start to give a shit about him again.
So to sum things up, Miz, Morrison, Burke, and Kane. And have Matt and MVP go in a nice, long, emotional match. Nice article, btw.

Agree: Keep khali (Dalip Singh) OUT!!!!
Did you keep someone out I would put in? Yes, I would have the last spot filled by a "money in the bank losers" match of everyone who was a loser in the qualifying matches. It would be here that I turn to Jimmy Wang Yang, whose skill set just might bode really well in this type of contest.

I see them possibly thinking about Cody Rhodes & The Elijah Experience in it.
Posted By: Quacker (Guest) on March 02, 2008 at 04:08 PM
Why not stick Stevie or Dreamer in there instead of Kane. MVP should be in there but should be taken out by Matt. Sets up Hardy MVP at Backlash.

i tink jeff hardy can win mtib ladder match. chris jeraco hs a good chance to. Kendy just has big mouth an like to get on micraphone so he can hear his own name. i thinkk they shud give bulldog son a spot in ladder march,

i would kick out miz and morrison and have a actual tag title defense at WM haven't seen one of those since WM 20 if i rember and throw in richards Burke instead and kick mvp out casue fo the us title match adn throw in jamie nobel give him some exposure eh

Even though Hardy will win, I want Kennedy to win again.

Mark 4 CM Punk...OMG!!!1! You know wrestler's real names! U R SO INSIDER!
Lame.
Posted By: StereotypeA (Guest) on March 02, 2008 at 05:04 PM
They should put Kofi Kingston in there instead of MVP. Him and Shelton would be jumping all over the place!
Posted By: JJ (Guest) on March 02, 2008 at 05:04 PM
I'd call him the big 400 pound turd, but I didn't want to infringe on your trademark.
Posted By: Mark 4 CM Punk (Guest) on March 02, 2008 at 05:59 PM
I say give CM Punk the ECW title back, then have him start feuding with Burke. Put Chavo in MITB along with Kofi. Kane should stay in.
They'll probably do Matt Hardy vs. MVP. As much as everyone may hate it, I can honestly see them putting Khali in, if no other reason than to have do Kane/Khali during it (You know those two won't win it, so I honestly see no harm here). Plus, they could play up the super-tall monster in a ladder match angle.
Posted By: JLAJRC (Guest) on March 02, 2008 at 06:54 PM
MVP and Matt Hardy will probably have their own match off somewhere. Morrison & Miz should be in a multi-team match against Tommy Dreamer & Colin Delaney, Jesse & Festus and either The Edge Heads or Jimmy Wang Yang & Shannon Moore. Two guys to think about, are Jamie Noble and Elijah Burke.
Posted By: Matt Eli (Guest) on March 02, 2008 at 07:00 PM
I'd have Matt Hardy get his big Wrestlemania moment alongside his brother winning MITB by getting his first big Singles title from MVP.
I'd put Miz and Morrison in it because Morrison is fucking awesome and Miz has proven that when you tag team with someone as awesome as Morrison, it'll rub off on you.
Given perfect circumstances, I'd put Gregory Helms in it, but since he's out until May, I'll go with Jimmy Wang Yang.
And Kane is always a good standby over on Smackdown. Need someone to fill a spot in a multi-man match? Give Kane a call. Need a filler challenger for a championship? Kane's probably not doing anything. And the good part is he can still go decently every week on Smackdown and can do well in big matches when he gets the opportunity.

I would go with Khali and Kane for SD! and Stevie and Elijah for ECW. Matt Hardy and MVP are both going to be busy with a hopefully spectacular US Title Match, Finlay's busy on RAW with JBL, Rey's out hurt... I could see Jamie Noble and Chuck Palumbo in instead of Kane and Khali, but that opens up the possibility of having Kane/Khali II at WM.
Kane and Khali in MitB, however, would add the big man element to the match. Elijah with a great showing here could boost him back up into title contention on ECW, and the same for Stevie. I'm sorry, but I'm kind of tired of seeing Punk in every ECW Title match.
Miz and Morrison should be involved in some kind of title defense at WM, in a multi-team match as Matt Eli suggested.
So, MitB would look like this:
RAW: Jeff Hardy, Chris Jericho, and Mr. Kennedy.
ECW: Elijah Burke, Stevie Richards, and Shelton Benjamin.
SD!: Kane and Khali.

No I don't want MVP in the MitB match, it should be Matt vs. MVP at WM for the US title. Then both Hardyz will have their great Mania moments. Jeff winning MiTB and Matt winning the US title.
Posted By: Marty (Guest) on March 02, 2008 at 08:12 PM
How come no one has mentioned Cody Rhodes?? I think he would fit perfectly in the MiTB match! I agree with the John Morrison and Miz choices. My final choice would be Kane.

big daddy v + mitb= MASSIVE BUYRATES
Posted By: rey (Guest) on March 02, 2008 at 09:52 PM
man kennedy really needs his momentum back, and it seems to be coming slowly but surely. maybe his spot in the raw main event and the mic check on cena after is a sign of things to come?
Posted By: the man dude (Guest) on March 02, 2008 at 11:17 PM
can you say COLIN DELANEY, Mr Money In The Bank ???????
*drool*
Posted By: Pepo (Guest) on March 02, 2008 at 11:20 PM
where's all this, 'i know, lets add elijah coming from?'...he's good enough thats for certain, but he has spent the last 6 months jobbing or off tv so you can't put him in a high profile wm match like that!
i would like to see the pulumbo/noble feud added to mitb, i'm 90% sure we'll see punk in there and morrison (although a multi man tag for the titles, featuring jwy & moore, edgeheads, dreamer & delaney and festus & jesse would be spectacular - tables elimination!! - it's not happening!)
as for mvp and hardy, they'll be locking up for the us title i'm sure
Posted By: nzlnotorious (Guest) on March 02, 2008 at 11:33 PM
I'd put Brian Kendrick in there, partly because of London's on/off again foot but also for the punishment he's willing to take. He's great to watch in ladder matches.
Posted By: Tag Scream (Guest) on March 02, 2008 at 11:46 PM
I know what you mean about finishing sequences... I was at one of the RAW house shows this past weekend, and Randy Orton and Jeff Hardy did this amazing rapid-fire grappling sequence at the end that culminated with Orton reversing Hardy's Twist of Fate into an RKO. It took my breath away live, seriously.

The MITB is one of the best matches on WM in my opinion. Kofi and Benjamin would be some good additions. Miz/Morrison works too. MVP/Hardy needs to be a long and good match, about 30 mins. If MVP didn't have the title, then he could get in the match too. I like the US belt on MVP for now anyway, because it seems to be a part of him. (Oh,and by the way, people can hate on his gear all they want, but I love the shit! The only thing that slightly throws it off is the brace under his knee pad. He should go ahead and get the other brace for extra protection.)Other than that, MITB IV should be in the middle of the show instead of a starter match. the match should be good like last year,if not better. Anyone agree?

I actually wanted them to pull a swerve and NOT have Jeff qualify for the match; rather, I'd have him face HBK 1-on-1 at 'mania, partially to solidify his new spot at the top and also because everyone right now expects him to win MitB. I'd love to see Jericho win MitB and feud with Kennedy over the briefcase for the next couple months (anyone remember the last time Kennedy had a feud that lasted longer than four weeks?) I'm also one of those people who wants Kane, Elijah Burke AND Stevie Richards in the match.

let's see, so far we have Kennedy, Benjamin, Hardy, Y2J and Carlito. I would go with Morrison, Dreamer and maybe Palumbo? Maybe Kane and Palumbo can feud over the final MITB match.
