The Top Ten 3.04.08: Underappreciated Matches
Posted by Julian Williams on 03.04.2008

Good day peeps and welcome back to another stirring edition of The Top Ten. This week we're going to look at The Top Ten Unappreciated Matches. Sorry about leaving you all hanging last week, but I had to work numerous double shifts so I had virtually no time to type this up. A few things about this week's topic before we get into the list. These matches are the bouts that I feel were underappreciated, NOT underrated. The difference being that some of these matches have been critically acclaimed, yet are barely discussed when people mention all-time great contests. Other matches included are matches that I felt were overshadowed by other matches on the same show and thusly didn't get the accolades that they deserve. And then there are other matches that people blasted at the time, but I feel were better than most people made it out to be. So I guess you can call this list a mixture of forgotten, overshadowed and underrated matches, but it was just easier to say underappreciated since I believe that applied to them all. Also, the order I did the list in was based on how unappreciated I feel the match is, not how good it is. Ok, ‘nuff explaining, let's do this Marines (sorry, I been playing too much Call Of Duty 4 lately).

A Moment For Commentary: Cena calling out The Rock

Anyone who reads this column regularly knows that I'm a supporter (what am I, British?) of John Cena and usually defend him since I feel that many people in the IWC unfairly criticize him and pretty much just find any reason to shit on him. That being said, I must say that I feel that Cena was completely wrong when talking about The Rock turning his back on wrestling.

You cannot fault The Rock for getting in a more lucrative (and safe) profession. That doesn't mean that he no longer loves wrestling, it just means that he's moved on to the next phase of his life. Honestly, The Rock could have been gone from early 2002 because after The Scorpion King, the movie offers started pouring in for him. But instead of just taking the money and running, he stuck around for a while and helped put over as many people as possible including Chris Jericho, Goldberg, Evolution, and Brock Lesnar. He didn't have to do that. He stopped by occasionally to cut a promo and pop a rating. He didn't have to do that. He taped a promo to hype last year's Battle Of The Billionaires. He didn't have to do that. He did it because he DOES love the business and tried to give something back even though he was moving on. How many of us would be that gracious? How many of us, if we got a chance to be a big time movie star, would go back to our current job to crunch some numbers or help build company morale? I'd say that just about 0.00% of us would do that. But The Rock did. The man is busy filming movies and working on deals for future movies. You can't expect him to still be wrestling or coming in every couple of months to cut promos. That's just unfair and selfish.

Would it be great if The Rock returned to the ring for one final match or showed up on Raw more often to give a classic Rocky promo? Of course it would be. But should we spite him because he doesn't? Of course not. Basically, The Rock has moved on and if you are a true fan of his, you would support his decision to not return to the ring and focus on his acting career. I hope The Rock gets the ovation he deserves at the Hall Of Fame ceremony and I truly hope that there aren't any assholes there to boo him or make stupid comments because that would truly ruin what could be a great moment to show The Rock how much we truly thank him for all the years of entertainment he provided us.

The Top Ten Underappreciated Matches

Honorable Mention: The Midnight Express vs. The Southern Boys (Great American Bash ‘90)
When people talk of great tag teams matches, they might immediately mention Bulldogs/Hart Foundation, Rockers/Brainbusters, Midnights/R&R Express, Dudleyz/Hardyz/Edge & Christian, but you probably won't think of this match which is shame because this is one of the best tag team matches EVER. The Midnights were in the twilight of their run together and people started to wonder if they could still perform how they used to, but on this night Sweet Stan and Beautiful Bobby proved why they were one the best tag teams ever. Jim Cornette even called this match one of the Midnights best matches EVER and considering some of their classic matches, that is a high compliment to this match. The Southern Boys were pretty much seen as fodder before this match, but after this impressive showing, they immediately became big time contenders in the tag team division. This was just a great match that saw The Midnight Express dominate for most of it by secluding Smothers into their side of the ring. Smothers was eventually able to get the hot tag to Armstrong and then it all broke down from there with The Midnights hitting The Rocket Launcher and doing the OLD SCHOOL switch-a-roo, but The Southern Boys just couldn't be put away. The ending came when Sweet Stan nailed Smothers in the back of the head with a kick from the apron which allowed Beautiful Bobby to roll him up for the win. This is definitely a forgotten classic and should be looked up by anybody who loves great tag team wrestling.

10) Mick Foley vs. Edge (Wrestlemania 22)
While this may not be the greatest hardcore match of all-time (like Edge and Foley claimed), it was one of the best hardcore matches I've seen in my life so I don't understand why some people have turned on this match in recent years. I've heard people call it tedious or boring or not that good and I can only wonder what kind of drugs they are on because the match I saw was action packed and featured one of the most insane finishes I've ever seen to a match. This match is also a personal favorite of mine because it gave Mick Foley a chance to finally shine on the Wrestlemania stage. This match completely stole WM22, in my opinion, by being the most brutal match ever seen at ‘Mania. These two men brutalized each other with steel chairs, thumbtacks, barbed wire, and finally a flaming table. That flaming table spot with Edge going FACE FIRST into fire is still one of the craziest things I've ever seen and I doubt I'll see anything that surpasses it anytime soon. Foley finally got his Wrestlemania classic and I think we all know that after all the bumps and bruises he's experienced during his career for our enjoyment, he deserved to shine on the grandest stage of all. For Christ's sake people, Edge went face first through fire. FIRE! Show this match some damn respect.

9) Ric Flair vs. Randy Savage (Wrestlemania 8)
When people talk about all-time great Wrestlemania matches, this match always seems to be excluded and I never understand why as it is one of the best I've ever seen on the grandest stage of them all. This match was about as personal as you can get because Ric Flair bragged about having an affair with Miss Elizabeth and promised to reveal a scantily clad photo of Liz after he won the match (which as a horny eight year old automatically made me root for Flair). This match was a great back and forth contest which saw The Nature Boy focus and Savage's knee and dissect it to the point where Savage could barely stand. Flair seemed to be in total control and ready to set up for the figure four, when Savage was able to catch the Nature Boy in a rollup and take a page out of Flair's book by grabbing onto the tights. This gave Savage his second WWE Title and this was a great payoff to a fantastic storyline. If you've never seen this match, do yourself a favor and check it out because it is truly one of the best Wrestlemania matches I've ever seen.

8) Shelton Benjamin vs. Shawn Michaels (Raw, 5/2/05)
Now I know what you're probably thinking. How could I include a match that has been universally praised on a list about underappreciated matches? It's quite simple. It's because I think this match doesn't get ENOUGH praise as it is one of the best Raw matches of all-time and is damn near flawless. This was a part of the Gold Rush Tournament to crown a new #1 contender for the World Heavyweight Championship and it was a match that lived up to all of our expectations and, at least in my view, far exceeded it. This match made Shelton Benjamin look like an absolute BEAST as he was able to utilize his strength and agility to dominate HBK for the majority of it. This match was so fast-paced that if you blinked, you would probably miss something. It seemed as though Shelton had an answer to all of HBK's offense and just when it seemed like Shelton was going to score the upset, one of the sickest finishers to a match I've ever seen happened. Shelton attempted to springboard onto HBK, but Michaels responded by taking Shelton's head off with Sweet Chin Music while Benjamin was still in the air. Sick, sick, sick, sick, SICK finish to one of the most exciting matches I've ever seen. I truly hope that we see these two lock in up again sometime in the future.

7) Chris Jericho vs. The Rock (Royal Rumble ‘02)
This is a match that I feel is unjustly overlooked when people talk about some of the best matches ever at The Royal Rumble. Jericho had won the Undisputed Championship the prior month at Vengeance and The Rock was poised to dethrone Jericho of his title. This match featured some absolutely awesome action and Jericho hung in tough with The Rock, making him seem like a true main eventer. Everytime that it seemed that The Rock might pull off the win, Jericho would reach in his bag of trickeration to stay alive. The ending to this match is one of my favorite ever as Jericho used not one, not two, but THREE illegal maneuvers to pick up the W. First he gave The Rock a low blow, then threw him into an exposed turnbuckle and then rolled Rocky up with his feet on the rope. THREE TIMES THE HEELERY!! I felt this match made Jericho seem like a big time heel capable of using his cheating ways to outsmart his opponents ala Ric Flair & HHH, but alas Jericho would be promptly bitched out at Wrestlemania 18 and would never get another chance to run with the big belt. Shame I say, he was a damn good champ.

6) Triple H vs. Chris Jericho (Wrestlemania 18)
Speaking of Jericho being bitched out, we have this match. I've always felt this was a match that never got a fair chance. First off, the WWE made the IDIOTIC move of putting this match on as the main event instead of Hogan/Rock which I still can't understand to this day. I understand that you want the title match in the main event, but nothing and I repeat NOTHING deserved to main event more than Rock/Hogan. As a result, the crowd was totally deflated for this match and it resulted in the most silence I've ever heard for a Wrestlemania main event. Despite Stephanie McMahon's involvement, this match still managed to be very good as Jericho played the heel role perfectly by targeting The Game's injured quad. They were able to tell a great story with Jericho being desperate to retain his title by working over HHH's leg and Trips trying everything in his power to fight back. Stephanie, to her credit, took a great amount of punishment in this match including getting Jericho's shoulder rammed into her gut and taking a Pedigree from Trips. This was a fantastic mat based matchup that mixed in some high spots and my appreciation for this match grows everytime I see it. If you haven't seen it in a while, watch it again and you might come to appreciate it a little more. That's if you can get Stephanie's shrieking voice out of your head.

5) The Hart Foundation vs. The Rockers (SNME, 10/90)
This is the infamous "broken rope" match and before seeing this match, I heard about it being so brutally bad that they didn't even show it on SNME and thus robbed The Rockers of the one title reign they had. I have to tell you guys, this match was damn good. It wasn't up to the level of the previous matches between these two teams, but it was a very good match that I feel unfairly gets shitted on. The broken rope only affected the second fall, but the first fall and the third fall featured some fantastic action and the way they responded to the broken rope was good enough that it didn't completely drag down the match. I don't know why this match gets such a bad rap and I wish the WWE would have had the balls to go through with showing this match so The Rockers would have had the title run they richly deserved. I still have a hard time figuring out how Vince thought this match was too bad to show on TV yet has given the green light to such "classics" as Kane vs. Fake Kane, Fake Rosie vs. Fake Trump, and The Great Khali vs. well, anybody.

4) Bret Hart vs. Razor Ramon (Royal Rumble '93)
When you talk about great title bouts at the Royal Rumble, people usually discuss Angle/Benoit, Triple H/Cactus, or The Rock/Mankind, but seem to forget this match which was thisclose to being a classic. I remember this match being the match that made me turn into a huge Bret Hart mark because of the way he absolutely dissected Razor's leg, I thought that was immensely cool because I had never seen psychology in a wrestling match like that before. I also remember Razor throwing his toothpick at a kid at ringside after Bret gave him his sunglasses and thinking that even though Razor was a heel, he was pretty damn cool. I think that was the first time I cheered for anything a heel did. Anyhow, this match was brilliant. Bret spent the majority of the match focusing on Razor's leg, but Razor would fight back and nearly put the Hitman away a couple times. The match ended after Bret reversed a Razor's Edge attempt into a backslide and once Razor kicked out of that, he applied the Sharpshooter for the submission. This match made me a huge fan of both men and is proof that when Scott Hall was sober, he was one of the best in the business.

3) The Rock vs. Kurt Angle vs. The Undertaker (Vengeance '02)
With the legendary status that triple threat matches like Triple H/Michaels/Benoit and Joe/Daniels/Styles has achieved, people seem to forget about this match which was really one of the first great triple threat matches. This match was absolute excellence and was so good in fact that it turned a lot of naysayers, who stated before the match that triple threat matches were played out, into believers that triple threat matches can be great when done correctly. All three men held their own in this match, but Kurt was definitely the glue and brought this match from the "good" level into the "fucking awesome" level. All three men hitting each other with one of the others finishing move never gets old to me. The perfect definition of a fun match.

2) AMW vs. XXX (TNA Weekly PPV, 6/25/03)
Everybody knows about their classic match at Turning Point the following year, but this was the original cage match between these two teams and was an awesome match in its own right. After watching both this and the Turning Point match a few times, I'm starting to like this match more because it was just non-stop action from the opening bell until the finish. Not only was it the first cage match in TNA history, but it was significant because XXX at that point was 4-0 against AMW, mainly due to outside interference from the third member of XXX. This was AMW's way of guaranteeing that there would be no interference from Low-Ki during this encounter. This match is highlighted by Primetime doing a sick crossbody from the top of the cage and AMW delivering the Death Sentence on the Fallen Angel from the top of the cage. A brutal cage match that finally saw AMW get the edge on their nemesis.

1) Bret Hart vs. The 1-2-3 Kid (Raw, 7/11/94)
Whenever there is a discussion about great matches in WWE history, this match is virtually never mentioned and that's a damn shame because it is one of the best pure wrestling matches you will ever see. This match is a forgotten gem in the annals of RAW's history and I'm so glad that the WWE included it on their Best Of Raw DVD set because it truly deserves to be recognized. This match was for Bret's WWE Title and The Kid came in as a huge underdog (big surprise) but by the end of this match, he earned the respect of all the fans. The match started off with some nice matwork, with both men feeling each other out, but soon Bret started to dominate with his strength advantage. He started delivering some vicious shots to The Kid and it seemed like Bret was just too much for the underdog. However, The Kid was able to fight back by utilizing his speed until Bret caught him with a Samoan Drop and pinned him for the three count. The match wasn't over, though, because The Kid had draped his foot across the bottom rope just before the 3 count and Bret (ever the babyface) made the official aware of it so the match was restarted. That seemed like it was going to be a fatal mistake for Bret as soon The Kid was able to regain himself and start taking the fight to Bret, including a SWEET running dropkick in the corner that caught Bret right in the mouth. It seemed like The Kid might pull of the huge upset, but he went for one too many high risk moves as Bret was able to catch him when he attempted a dropkick from the top rope and locked in The Sharpshooter to get the victory. A phenomenal, forgotten match that I hope more people get to enjoy now that it's been released on a DVD set.

I have to say that Rock and Jericho did some great work together. I feel most of there stuff is over-looked. The promos, the matches, the slow build during the alliance feud. Strongly agree w/ your pick of their match. In addition, I could watch that HBK vs Shelton match 3 times a week and not get tired of it. I wish they had these two feud and build off this match in terms of chemistry.

I vividly remember the rock CHOKESLAMMING Undertaker in that triple threat match. Yes for the people who never saw it, the undertaker got chokeslammed by the ROCK !! Pure beauty.

solid list...might I add the Rock/HHH Ironman match from 2000? That match is seemingly ignored by the E but is the most entertaining IM match they've done.

Personally I feel The Rock v HHH at Backlash 2000 is the most underappricated match of all time... the heat for this match was off the charts and the execution of the storyline (Rock against the world!) was played out to perfection, it led to one of the most satisfying title changes in history... yet this match gets overshadowed by the great judgment day match.. but for the life of me this was the most fun match I've ever seen.

are you like 15 or something? Edge going face first into the fire was the craziest thing you have ever seen ever? have yo not seen Mick Foley fly off the hell in a cell, have you not seen Bubba Ray and Matt going flying off a "20" foot ladder to 4 stacked tables below? Have you not seen Randy Orton get RKO'd on Thumbtacks by Mick Foley? Did you not watch the original ECW One Night Stand?
Did you not see Shane McMahon fall god knows how many feet onto Big Show below him.

That Wrestle Mania matches was AWESOME and I give it ***** but hell there have been way better spots and better hardcore matches in the past

One of my favorite underappreciated gems is Undertaker vs Nash at WM12. For battle between big men they layed it down. While its not a 4-5 star classic its very good. What made it special to me it was their only match afterwards. In the era rematches are common they never had a follow up and its best it never did.

Posted By: Guest#5893 (Guest)  on March 04, 2008 at 04:47 PM

The most underappreciated match ever is the Triple H/Rocky Ironman match from 2000. It was ***** for 59:30 and then the Undertaker came back as the American Bad Ass and ruined everything. Seriously, that was like watching an Oscar-worthy epic with a crap ending. I think the fact he ruined that match with his return actually hurt his heat...i know i stopped cheering for him.

And Jericho/Triple H is not underappreciated. It's junk. 60,000 people sitting on their hands, not caring, as they wait for Triple H to win. Maybe it's not their fault the crowd didn't care (followed Rock/Hogan, terrible storyline) but they didn't. By far, the most lifeless WrestleMania main event (and I mean last match on the card) in history. Total junk.

WCW and the NWA rarely get love on these lists, but thanks for the honorable mention.

Others
Raven & Saturn v. Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko v. Rey Mysterio Jr. & Billy Kidman

Raven v. Benoit v. DDP

The WarGames with the Dangerous Alliance vs. Sting, Ricky Steamboat, Dustin Rhodes, Barry Windham & Nikita Koloff

In ECW, the first Rey vs. Psychosis match since it really was the first Lucha match shown on American tv

the Malenko-Guerrero classic

I was at the Skydome for the Jericho/HHH match...fans weren't sitting on their hands...THEY WERE LEAVING!!! I've never seen anything like it in my life...the match shouldn't could have gone on last if it didn't suck so bad. Think about it...if the HHH/Michaels/Benoit match from WMXX had been the main event of WMX8 and gone on after Rock/Hogan, no one would have left.

What about when i saved Sting from the 4 Horseman in WCW???

Posted By: RoboCop (Guest)  on March 04, 2008 at 06:16 PM

One match I'm a huge fan of: WWF Championship match between Diesel and Bret Hart from the 1995 Survivor Series. It was one of the best technician vs. big man matches in history.

Posted By: KanyonKreist (Guest)  on March 04, 2008 at 06:31 PM

sorry but in humble opinion the Y2J/HHH and Edge/Foley matches are WAYYYYYYY overated by Mr. Williams.

Posted By: JMASCORPIO (Guest)  on March 04, 2008 at 06:37 PM

I thought I was crazy. I knew AMW and TX already had a match inside a cage with the same skipper spot from 2004.

Posted By: Mr1700 (Guest)  on March 04, 2008 at 06:45 PM

One of my favorite Royal Rumble matches is Ronnie Garvin vs. Greg Valentine Submission match.

As for underappreciated WM matches, my list includes:
Don Muracco/Bob Orton vs. Can-Am Connection from WM 3. Hogan/Andre and Savage/Steamboat get all the kudos, but I actually think this this tag match was the best match there.

There are two AWESOME tag matches at WM 2 in British Bulldogs vs The Dream Team and Tito Santana/JYD vs. The Funk Brothers.

I think Hogan/Slaughter from WM 7 is pretty good.

I think the Bret/Owen Summerslam Steel Cage match is WAY better than their WM X match.

Jake Roberts vs. Rick Martel Blindfold match is fun, as is Piper/Goldust.

Posted By: JLAJRC (Guest)  on March 04, 2008 at 07:14 PM

Malenko vs. Benoit from Hog Wild 1996 is a terrific match that is nearly ruined by the unappreciative biker crowd. Put that match in front of any wrestling crowd (i.e., people who actually paid for a wrestling show), and the people would be on their feet.

Steiners vs. Owen/Bret Hart from (I think) Coliseum's Wrestlefest '94 is a match that you should go out of your way to see, and I hope WWE puts it on a DVD someday.

To go international, the JPW vs. AJW 8-Woman tag from July 31, 1993 (it's on youtube) is phenomenal. It was sort of like an iron team match.

I love the Edge/Foley match... that's the match that got me back into wrestling after several years of not giving a crap anymore.

Triple H & Jericho was NOT a bad match AT ALL.... it was a TERRIBLE FEUD. That's why it had no crowd heat. If they had played it right it could have been huge.

The Edge vs Foley match was great and while we could all find more hardcore stuff online right now I honestly was in shock at the ending of the match. Thumbtacks and tables had been done to death and they had to go find something worse. Also the barbwire socko to lita and the foley clothesline where all three go over the top was great.

The Rock vs Triple H Iron Man Match is by far the best one they've ever put on but they prefer to talk about Bret vs Shawn dont know why. Maybe showing clips of Shawn smuggling banana's isnt something the wwe board approve of.

Backlash 2000's main event was great and should have been the Mania Main Event. I remember really rooting for the Rock despite the fact that I really loved Triple H at the time.

bret vs. british bulldog @ in your house (the blade job/ECW chanting one) was another awesome match that I think people forget about a lot.

A personal under-appreciated favourite of mine is King vs. Tazz at SS 2000. The match itself isn't any special but that last moment with JR smashing Tazz over the head with the glass jar....I dunno, I totally mark out! It's even better hearing the 1-2-3 without commentary.

I must say that Foley/Edge never did much for me personally. I think the main problem being that I watched it a long time after Wrestlemania 22, meaning I never got caught up in the pre-Mania hype

kurt angle defending the wwf title against taker at survivor series 2000. i have never seen ANYONE toss taker around like that before.
the rick rude/sting matches are real gems.

and the best wrestling i EVER seen was the miracle violence connection vs the steiner bros.

Finally, the Savage vs. Flair bout at Wrestlemania gets some love - yes, it was a very emotional match filled with a ton of pychology and pure wrestling, between two wreslers just about ready for the twilight of their careers, pure awesomeness.

I think Edge/Foley at WM is a bit overrated. Yes it has some insane spots but most of those spots look so set up that you can just tell what's going to happen. It's a great spot fest, but not that great as a whole match.

Posted By: Olyompic hero (Guest)  on March 04, 2008 at 08:23 PM

O'dog I couldnt agree with you more. Words cannot explain how PISSED I was after the Undertaker came out and destroyed a classic ***** 58 minute classic. UGH It would have been one thing if Taker came out with like 5 minutes left and they got to finish the match with a pinfall but OMG such a terrible ending for Shawn Michaels to bitch out cause he had the referee shirt on and disqualify the rock

Posted By: natedoggcata (Guest)  on March 04, 2008 at 09:31 PM

John Cena vs. Kurt Angle from No Mercy 2003. That match never gets any love because people would rather talk about the shitacular Cena of today.

Posted By: JJ (Guest)  on March 04, 2008 at 09:38 PM

Thank you for putting Rock/Angle/Taker on here, that is one of my most favorite matches, I watched that match when I was 12 and was just amazed by it. I think Taker/HHH at X7 is pretty underated

It's a good list but I have a couple disagreements. First, I think Shelton/Michaels gets its due. I mean, come on, it's even on the Best Of Raw DVD set.

My other arguement is Foley/Edge. If anything that match is OVER hyped. Don't get me wrong, it was an excellant hardcore affair but Orton/Foley was better in my opinion. But that's MY opinion and this isn't my column. Nobody will ever 100% agree with you but you.

Again, good job on the list and here's an idea for a future list I just came up with... what about a top 10 of good matches that had no right to be good matches? Whether it was bad wrestlers pulling out a good match out of nowhere or a stipulation that should have sucked but became entertaining due to the talent involved. Just an idea. Keep up the good work.

Yeah, I saw this on the Raw 15th Anniversary Box Set. I'm with you on this one, I really enjoyed the match, although given the status of these two guys, I kinda knew who would win it. Regardless of that the sportsmanship, and performances shown by these guys were nothing short of awesome. Truly one to remember.

I always felt that Jericho v X Pac v Eddie Guerrero v Benoit at No Way Out in 2001 never gets the credit it deserves. It's a hot fast paced match with a great finishing sequence.
I also liked the Rhino v Raven match at Backlash 2001 (the one with the great shopping trolley Gore) more than most.
I also feel that as a whole Summerslam 2002 doesn't get enough love. I rate it on a par with Wrestlemania 17 (it has better matches but not the epic quality.)
Oh, and Jericho v HHH sucked balls but was still a thousand times better than the Hogan/HHH and Hogan/Taker main events that followed.

Two of my personal favourite matches were Diesel and HBK vs Razor and 123 Kid from the old Action Zone show, that was my favourite tag match of all time, and also Bret Hart vs Hakushi from the first In Your House was awesome.

i agree with JJ, cena-angle nm 2003 was great. this was the last good match cena had before he got a big push despite being in terrible form. he wouldn't have a good match again until the i quit match vs jbl, jd 2005.
whilst on the subject of underrated matches, what about angle vs hhh, unforgiven 2000. i know the whole love triangle storyline got in the way a bit, but what they did in the ring was excellent, good psychology with kurt working over the ribs and especially that belly2belly through the spanish announce table (oh dios mio!)

I'm glad AMW and XXX got second seed, and nobody seems to have a problem with that. Everything involving that rivalry, right down to the final match between Daniels and Skipper, was golden, and probably will remained buried in TNA archives forever and forgotten...unless TNA puts it on a DVD, which is likely.

To hell with the critics on this one, regardless to how far you broaden your horizons, nobody's going to accept some matches, and nobody's going to be pleased with anyone's top 10.

I feel most of this list. Shelton and HBK should indeed have a real program, maybe with a huge blowoff match at SummerSlam?

I also liked that you included the Rumble 2002 Rock/Y2J match and Hitman vs. Razor (although I prefer their KOTR match, which is also very underrated - just like many matches of the 1994/1995 hitman runs, when he would pull out a watchable match out of ANYBODY > Isaac Yankem? Jean-Pierre Lafitte?).

more matches to add besides mentioned Rock/HHH iron man match would be HBK vs. The British Bulldog from 1995 Raw, HBK vs. Owen Hart from IYH6 (although the ending sucked) and the Steiners vs. Owen & Bret (I know SOME guys put it on their "best ever" list but how that's a very small group of people because unfortunately very few actually saw this encounter).

The Rock vs. Chris Benoit for the WWF title at Fully Loaded 2000 doesn't get many mentions. A great match with several false finishes, proved Benoit was a main event WWF player!

HHH vs Taker XM17 Was a great match and I would have put it on here if it were my list, but it's not.

Also a few years back Eddie vs Rock main event from raw was pretty good match as well.

I do not understand the bitching from HHH vs Rock ironman. If HHH won without the Taker ending you would all be PMSing OMGZ HHH ALWAYS WINS DAMN THAT STEPHANIE! Also I think every great tag match is underrappreciated besides the TLC ones but maybe I am the only one who likes a good tag match.

Can't believe people are actually shitting on the ending to the Rock/HHH iron match match? It featured one of the best "surprise returns" and loudest cheers you'll ever here (track down the YouTube video if it's still around). His reappearance as a good guy (after a year doing his demonic character) was unbelievable and a perfect end to a solid match.

The guy calling the Roberts-Martel blindfold match "fun" must consider watching flies fuck fun too.

No love (again) for HBK/Diesel vs. Razor/Kid (Action Zone, Oct. 04) which is probably the most unappreciated tag title match of all time.

natedogg: Grow up. You're not a rebel because you mention Benoit's name.

WWEMan: He probably left out UT/Hardy because that already appeared high on his previous "most overrated matches" list.

Pretty much agree with most of that list! I'm going to have to watch the Y2J/HHH wrestlemania match again because watching it live I hated it but that was mainly because Y2J was Steph's bitch leading upto to the match.
Some more underrated or 'underappreciated' matches off the top of my head.

Hardyz vs Edge & Christian - No Way Out 2000
This was a fantastic tag team match -very solid wrestling that showcased why 2000 was the year of the tag-teams! This match is often overlooked because of the many matches that the two teams were involved in - TLC's, cage matchs (Unforgiven 2000 - another gem).

Angle vs Rey Mysterio (Summerslam 2002) - opening to one of the best Summerslams but this match never gets mentioned these days. Rey's first PPV match in WWE and just another one of the many great Angle matchs in 2002.

Undertaker vs Orton (WM21). Overshadowed by the other raw vs smackdown match - Angle vs HBK -I thought this match was fantastic and for the first time in ages though the Ol' Dead Man might not win.

Batista vs Eddie Guerrero (No Mercy 2005). Eddie's last match and a fantastic world title match. Full of psychology (Eddie being tempted to cheat, targeting Batista's back).

Nitro vs Shelton Benjamin vs Carlito (Vengeance 2006)
Again an under appreciated triple threat match which allowed these mid-carders to show that they COULD become the future of the WWE.

Can't think of anymore at the moment but I'm sure I will!

How could you forget the SummerSlam 1992 match at Wimbley Station, Bret VS Davie Boy Smith, in my opinnion the best pure wrestling match that I have seen in the last twenty years. A true wrestling clinic.

I'd like to second that suggestion by King Miker. I think that would be an awesome article. The top ten good matches that should never have been good. I'd love to read that one. I'd be interested to see what terrible wrestlers actually somehow pulled out a great match, and what ridiculous, lame gimmick matches actually ended up being really entertaining.

I'd just like to say thank you. I've been a huge fan of The Rock since day one, and have also been a pretty big John Cena fan. I was shocked when I read the interview and comments that John Cena made about The Rock, and as much as I like John Cena, I feel that he was just being ignorant of all the times that The Rock did show up after his acting career took off. It seems that he very quickly forgot about The Rock showing up to try to help get fans into the first Diva Search, or when he showed up to support Eugene, or when the WWE was in Miami, and he got into Randy Orton's face and got thrown out of the building by Bischoff, but not before setting Orton up for the spear from Edge (Orton was Intercontinental champ at the time), or as you mentioned, when he showed up to help get over the 'Battle of the Billionaires'.

And let's not forget that he did come back to put over guys like Brock Lesnar & Goldberg. Two guys who The Rock decided would be ok to put over, and yet in the long run, they leave the WWE, and both make negative comments about it ever since. Which one would think is kind of like a slap in the face not only to the WWE, who put the World titles on these guys, but to The Rock, who is, and probably always will be, one of the most over guys in the history of the business. At least Randy Orton, Batista & Ric Flair (Evolution) and Chris Jericho are still going. Yes they may be retiring, or have taken time off, or not, but they didn't slap the WWE or The Rock in the face....outside of the ring at least.

Who knows? Maybe John Cena is a little selfish and just upset that The Rock worked with so many of the greats such as Undertaker, Triple H, Steve Austin, Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero, Big Show, Ric Flair, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, and Hulk Hogan that Cena may be wishing that he'd gotten the chance to face The Great One. Personally it's a mtch I'd love to see. I'd never pass up the chance to see The Rock in the ring. But I'd also love to see The Rock against Rey Mysterio and see what those two could do together, but you don't see Rey Mysterio going out of his way to insult The Rock and his love for pro wrestling.

On a side note kind of relating to all the greats that The Rock has worked with on screen that we've had the privilege to witness, let's not forget that early on in his career he was basically taken under the wing of another great, Bret "Hitman" Hart, as well as The Rock had his first try-out match with the WWE against Owen Hart.

The Rock gave us several years of wrestling, and in all those years, even more unforgettable memories. As I previously said, I'm a big fan of John Cena's as well, however with his comments about The Rock, I think I've lost a little respect for him.

Wouldn't it be great if the next time John Cena came out to the ring, the crowd just started to chant "ROCK-Y! ROCK-Y! ROCK-Y!" Do you think that maybe John Cena would get it then?

Jericho/X-pac/Benoit/Eddie, but one match which was awesome and was rated 4 stars by scott keith, meltzer, and keller that gets no mention or love at all today is Benoit/HHH from No Mercy 2000

I'd say I'd have to agree with what Cena said about The Rock..oops I mean Dwayne Johnson If I recall on a certain Monday night Raw, called out Stone Cold for "Taking his ball and going home" Talk about how wrestling was in his blood and finished the promo with "for the Rock this is home"....and where has he been? Cena is right, why not show your face every now and then...because the wrestling business and the wrestling fan is the reason why he has so much success now as a actor. You can't pay me to believe that he thinks even now with the recent backlash the wrestling business has taken with the Benoit suicide gave him more ante to severe ties with that part of his life. Is it that he thinks this business jeopardizes his acting career? With all due respect to Hogan, The Rock will ride his acting career til it runs dry like Hogan and look to the wrestling business to kick start a second come back.... justlike Hogan.

Some that come to mind:

- Trish Stratus versus Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley; No Way Out 2001
- Rob Van Dam/Jeff Hardy; InVasion
- Brock Lesnar/Kurt Angle; WrestleMania XIX (nobody talks about it because when they think of the match, they think of Brock's mistake, not the rest of the match)
- Melina/Mickie James; Backlash '07
- Practically the entire Vengeance '03 card, but especially Cena/Undertaker as well as...
- Big Show/Brock Lesnar/Kurt Angle; Vengeance '03

I don't care if this pisses off all of you "wrestling purist", but Goldberg in the elimination chamber was sick. The only time he was booked properly, and one hell of a match. When Triple H hides in his chamber and gives him the bird, then Goldberg smashed it... Priceless.

I agree with many of those picks - especially the Triple Threat between The Rock, Angle, and Taker. And while this is only a Top 10, I can't help but throw in a few more more:

- Kurt Angle Vs Rey Mysterio from SummerSlam 2002
- The Rock Vs Kurt Angle from No Way Out 2001
- John Cena Vs Chris Jericho Vs Christian from Vengeance 2005
- Stone Cold Steve Austin Vs HHH: 3 Stages of Hell from No Way Out 2001
- The Fatal Four Way Tag Team TLC Match from the Smackdown X episode

There are probably tons more I could mention, but those are a few that popped into my head immediately.

I'd have to agree with Amber above me there. I love the Rock, don't get me wrong. And I LOVE everything he's done for the business. But John Cena didn't knock his accomplishment to the business. He didn't get upset at the fact that he left and made movies and made money and got a better working schedule for himself and his family. Quite frankly, I am happy for the Rock too. The last thing I want is another failed marriage or depressed wrestler. But John Cena simply just say that you can go and leave wrestling and do whatever you want and it's fine, don't fuck with everyone, including him and the fans and say that you love the business. I think Cena was shooting as a fan more than a WWE Superstar. Because I don't think in any way WWE would've approved him saying anything like that with the Rock's dad and grandpa's induction coming so soon.

And honestly, I am pretty pissed at the Rock too. I remember right after The Mummy Returns came out, he was all over the press saying that the movie thing is just on the side, no matter how big his movie career becomes, wrestling always comes first in his life. We all see how that ended up. And when Austin refused to job to Brock and quit. He came back and said he will still be with WWE wrestling when he is 80 years old. How old is he now? Now even 40 yet.

People kept bringing up that he jobbed to Brock, and Evolution. First of all, when all that happened, he was still under contract. Meaning he was still an employee of WWE, it wasn't like he came back and did that for free. And it wasn't like he came back to do an one show deal just to put someone over. He was even the one who did the job in the Evolution tag match.

And all the other segments he did with Eugene and the divas, as I said, he was still under contract. So he pretty much had to show up when the WWE was in town and called him up. And as soon as his contract was up, he was nowhere to be seen. He mentioned nothing of wrestling when he's with the press. He just apparently cut all ties with it.

I know a lot of you are gonna say "what about the millionaires hair vs hair promo?" I mean, that match got so much Hollywood attention, even eXtra was covering it. I mean, they got people like Will.i.am and John Travolta talking about it, it really wasn't like the Rock came back in person and talked about the Cena/HBK match or put over Lashley.

I guess my beef with this whole issue is that, I think Cena had a legit claim when he made his statement. And I've always liked the Rock, but I do feel abandoned as his fan. And I agree with Cena, "don't fuck with us and say you love the business"

And if anyone cared to pay attention to Cena. He is usually very humble and respectful when talking about other people in the industry.

I know you guys are going to shit all over me for this, but i think that Goldberg/Lesner from WM 20 should be on here. i think it was a good match, and truth be told all of you would say the same thing if the crowd didnt act the way they did

Good column. I'm not going to analyze it. But I have to say that HHH vs. Jericho at WM18 sucked, and it wasnt because of Jericho. HHH sold the quad which really slowed the match down. I wonder what they were thinking when they decided to go with that for the direction of the match? No one cared at that point anyway. HHH and everybody else got overshadowed by Hogan.

Just one more that came to mind recently - the episode of Smackdown that involved a tag team match where Chris Benoit German suplexed Steve Austin 11 times. Not only was the match fun and interesting (from what I can remember), but that spot came out of nowhere. From the looks and sound of the crowd, that spot helped make the match better and more entertaining. And I think that was not only because that moment was surprising (and probably displayed the most consecutive connected German suplexes in one match), but because Austin actually took that many considering his neck injury.
