The Thursday Small-For-All News Report: 03.06.08
Posted by Jeff Small on 03.06.2008

And One to Start With…

From commenter RavenTazECW, "SWERVE! Following your column last week where you stated the next week's inductee to your SFABHMHOF was a former world champion, I was ready to read something cool about Ron Simmons. Instead I am laughing my ass off at it being John Cena, complete with awesome goofy pictures. Well done."

Thanks all for the positive feedback on last week's edition. Sadly, I didn't get the intended rise out of the audience meaning either you all expect that shit from me OR all black people stopped reading when after my induction of the Godfather. I guess I'm going to have to go above and beyond silly stereotypes to get a rise out of all of you. While this week, I doubt that's going to happen. However, I have a funny feeling (no, it's not gas) that today's edition with be a SFANROTYC!!! God bless acronyms.

Wait for it…

Wait for it…

Keep waiting….

Yes, yes….

WHAMMY!!!!!!!

Welcome back to a star-studded edition of the Small-For-All News Report. As you just read, I have a good feeling in today's report. Why? Well, for the first time in many moons, we actually have a lot to talk about. In today's edition, we take a look at the location of Wrestlemania 25, talk industry news, purposely avoid previewing this weekend's TNA PPV, and witness the return of the WRESTLEMANIA BRACKETOLOGY! All this and much much more!

NEWS FROM TITAN TOWERS

I Can't Wait Till I'm Cited

Surely I'm not the first or even the second to report on this, but I still find it quite stunning one week later. Last Friday, the WWE added a section of their website entitled "Industry News." In addition to random musings of their own content, the WWE writers began to post information on TNA, CHIKARA, and Ring of Honor. Silly little websites like Rajah.com and Lords of Pain got cited for breaking stories first. Hell even the Wrestling Observer got a plug! While my first feeling was that Hell Froze Over, this was clearly not the case.

According to Meltzer, The Industry News section was created to increase unique hits to the website. With website traffic down, the feeling is that this will draw many hits to WWE.com. In fact, there is a content editor whose job is to filter what information gets placed in this section.

I applaud the WWE's decision to add the Industry News section to their website. It attracts people like me who never had a need to visit the E's page (unless to buy John Cena merchandise). Now, I spend a few minutes on WWE.com and find out more about TNA than I do anywhere else. Kinda sad, isn't it?

With that said, there are some odd observations on the Industry News page. My favorites include:

  • the WWE citing other websites for the developmental releases of Silas Young and Apolo!
  • the WWE citing Ashley's MySpace page to announce news of her hand injury. And to think, I thought I was the only one using MySpace as a credible source
  • the WWE mentioning TNA. I'm still in shock over this one

I Thought McMahon was the only one with Movie Inspirations

This past week, Chris Jericho did an interview with Fighting Spirit Magazine. Below are comments from the interview.

In regards to who came up with the Save Us Campaign: "There were a lot of rumours about who came up with that idea, but if other people had the idea then I never actually heard about it, because I came up with it one day when I was watching The Matrix and I thought, "That's kind of neat". I pitched it to Vince and that was basically it. He said he loved it, and it was me and a guy called Adam Pannuci from the WWE production team that created all the vignettes for the ten weeks that we did it."

Well at least we should be glad that he didn't pick out an idea from Lawnmower Man.

Comparing his debut to his return: "The first one will always be remembered, but in terms of competing with the first one, the second one was the absolute best that it could have been. The first one was a 10 and the second was a 9.5."

A 9.5? Look I was very happy to see Jericho return but nothing will compare to his verbal battle with the Rock. Hell, he came back to destroy Randy Orton and four months later, Orton's still on top and he's in a multi-man match for a title shot. Mission Failed.

On the minor changes to his character: "I always found that, performing 52 weeks a year on Raw or SmackDown, you're on TV every week and if you don't change something about yourself you become boring or complacent very quickly. I never wanted that, so I always changed my costumes or my hairstyles, or even something as small as my facial hair, and I always tried to update my promos with different catchphrases and different ideas. Also, wrestling-wise, I never wanted to rely on the same three or four moves. There's nothing wrong with having a ‘Greatest Hits', but you have to write new songs as well."

Oh shit, Jericho is shooting on Bret Hart and John Cena. Basement dwellers unite! It's time to rip on Chris Jericho for starting beef!

Overall, the entire interview was typical Jericho. Not that that's a bad thing at all.

    The Return of the Warrior

As everyone is aware of, next week's Raw is set to feature all Wrestlemania rematches from prior years. Looking at the current roster, there's only a handful of matches that can feasibly happen. These are:

    Chris Jericho vs. HHH
    Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels
    Ric Flair vs. The Undertaker
    The Undertaker vs. Kane
    Kane vs. The Great Khali
    The Undertaker vs. Mark Henry
    The Undertaker vs. Randy Orton
    The Undertaker vs. Batista
    HHH vs. The Undertaker
    HHH vs. Batista
    Shawn Michaels vs. John Cena
    John Cena vs. HHH
    John Cena vs. Big Show
    John Cena vs. JBL
    Shawn Michaels vs. Vince McMahon

Of course, the WWE could get nostaligic and bring back Jake "the Snake" Roberts to avenge his loss to the Undertaker at Wrestlemania 8. Or hell, bring back the Giant Gonzalez. Even better, bring back the man that strikes fear into Triple H…

Seriously that picture scares the shit out of me.

True Life: I'm a Wrestlemania Celebrity

According to the latest press release by the WWE, this year's Wrestlemania is quite star studded. In addition to Floyd Mayweather, Wrestlemania will feature 50 Cent (who will rap Floyd's entrance music), Snoop Dogg (who will be the Master of Ceremonies for Bunny Mania), John Legend (who will sing "America the Beautiful"), Kim Kardashian (who makes Paris Hilton look busy) and Raven-Symone. I even hear Soulja Boy Tell'em will be making an appearance to start a feud with this man…

Throw in the star-studded 411 Mania Staff (myself, Meehan, JP (who will shun me), and JT) and various other 411 readers (included the bald headed bastard named Kegger) and it shall be an excellent time. For a low, low cost of $10, I'll let any fan take a picture with me at the event. Sure it might seem overpriced but do you know expensive hand sanitizer will cost me? I ain't touching any of y'all without it.

    Quick N Dirty Wrestlemania News

    From all the usual sources:

Wrestlemania 25 will take place at the Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas on Sunday April 5, 2009. The Reliant Stadium holds 71,500 for football (the Houston Texans play there) and also has a retractable roof in case of inclement weather.

I have to say Houston does not appeal to me as much as the possibility of going to Las Vegas. However, neither did Detroit and I went to that show. Who's going to Houston?

Stephanie McMahon chewed out Bruce Pitchard for his work in directing the Floyd Mayweather segments on Raw

Seriously, Mayweather never answered any of JR and the King's questions making the entire segment awkward. Sadly, the build would be better if they just replayed this moment for the entire month:

The rumored last three participants in the Money in the Bank match are Elijah Burke, Kane, and the Great Khali

Seriously, if Khali qualified for the Money in the Bank match, it would be a dream come true. Imagine Khali chopping Chris Jericho from the top of the ladder! Now that's a dangerous bump!

And with more Wrestlemania news, here's the 2008 Wrestlemania Bracketology!

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY REVELANT… the 2008 WRESTLEMANIA BRACKETOLOGY!!!

Fun fact: this is the 3rd annual Wrestlemania Bracketology. With Selection Sunday under two weeks away, there's no better time than to look at the Wrestlemania Bubble.

For those of you who do not follow college basketball, I'll try to explain. Basically, the NCAA tournament is comprised of 65 basketball teams. 34 of the bids are automatic by either winning their conference tournament and or by being one of the best teams in their respective conference. For the rest of the teams, it's all about winning and hoping that similar teams lose. What happens is that there are usually 20 teams that have decent records and could make the tournament. These are placed on what is known as a "bubble". Bubble teams have to continue winning (usually against harder opponents) to move closer to making the tournament. When bubble teams lose an important game, they are subjected to the shitty tournament known as the NIT. The NIT is basically the Heat of college basketball.

So with that out of the way, I shall be looking at bubble wrestlers: those that are currently not scheduled for Wrestlemania. We will be looking at the odds of making the big show and what needs to be done in order to do so.

So first, let's look at our automatic bids. Here's the current card:

WWE Championship: Randy Orton © vs. John Cena vs. Triple H
World Championship: Edge © vs. the Undertaker
Boxer vs. Wrestler: Floyd Mayweather vs. the Big Show
Money in the Bank IV: Chris Jericho vs. Jeff Hardy vs. Carlito vs. Shelton Benjamin vs. Ken Kennedy vs. ???? vs. ???? vs. ????
Career Threatening Match: Ric Flair vs. Shawn Michaels
Smackdown vs. Raw: Batista vs. Umaga
BunnyMania Lumberjill Match: Beth Phoenix & Melina vs. Maria & Candice Michelle
    Finlay vs. JBL

With eight matches already announced, there's a possibility of one to three more matches that might be added to the card in addition to three roster spots for MITB4.

Let's first take a look at the Raw bubble:

    Raw Superstars Bubble Watch

Notable Superstars: Santino Marella, Hardcore Holly, Cody Rhodes, Paul Birchill, William Regal

(Note: As you can tell, Raw's pretty well represented at Wrestlemania!)

Santino Marella: If Carlito has a chance at winning the Money in the Bank match, clearly Santino deserves at the very least a chance at the ladder match. With that said, the former IC Champion's best chance at making the Wrestlemania card is by interfering in the Bunny Mania match. Really, I can see that happening. Santino costs Maria the match and afterwards, Snoop Dogg knocks Santino out. Sure, it's no Pete Rose tombstone but those days are long gone.

Hardcore Holly & Cody Rhodes: On Monday, we saw how low Rhodes's singles career stands. Considering the World Tag Team titles are almost invisible (those are JR's words not mine), I doubt either man will be performing on the main show.

Paul Birchill: I like Birchill as much as the next guy but his character is still in the tweaking stage. Can I see him make the Backlash card? Absolutely.

William Regal: As Commissioner of Raw, Regal's best chance at appearing at Wrestlemania will either be in a backstage segment with Vince McMahon or in JBL's corner during his match with Finlay.

    ECW Bubble Watch

Notable Superstars: Chavo Guerrero, CM Punk, John Morrison, the Miz, Tommy Dreamer, Colin Delaney, Elijah Burke, Big Daddy V

It's crazy to think that the ECW roster has the most omissions on the card. You would almost think that ECW is overlooked by the two main shows.

Chavo Guerrero: Chavo's clean win over CM Punk this past Tuesday places a lot of doubt on Chavo's status for Wrestlemania. A rematch with CM Punk (perhaps Extreme Rules) would have been almost certain if Chavo cheated to win on Tuesday. However, with a clean win, Chavo might be feudless heading into the Big Dance.

CM Punk: Even with a loss to Chavo, I cannot see CM Punk missing this year's Wrestlemania. If a rematch with Chavo does not happen, Punk would at least qualify for this year's Money in the Bank match.

John Morrison & the Miz: Morrison & the Miz are locked into two feuds in the WWE: against Dreamer and Delaney on ECW and against Jesse & Festus on Smackdown. Sadly, it looks like both feuds will be finished on weekly television. It's a shame John Morrison has not had a Wrestlemania moment as he would be a great addition to the Money in the Bank match.

Tommy Dreamer & Colin Delaney: As I mentioned above, look for this feud to be settled next week on ECW programming.

Elijah Burke: While rumors have him earning a spot in the Money in the Bank match, I just cannot fathom it. Since the summer, Burke has not even deserved a ECW title shot let alone a shot at one of the major titles. Burke needs a win streak before even being considered for a Wrestlemania spot. It's a pity too seeing as last year, he was leading the New Breed into a Wrestlemania match.

Big Daddy V: Considering he destroyed the entire ECW roster in the fall, it's unfortunate that BDV will be missing the big show.

    Smackdown Bubble Watch

Notable Superstars: MVP, Kane, the Great Khali, Mark Henry, Chuck Palumbo, Jaime Noble

MVP: I have to question why the WWE hasn't pulled the trigger on Matt Hardy's return. Unless they plan on having MVP in the Money in the Bank match, they cannot wait too much longer to start building MVP/Hardy. Considering this feud has not even been mentioned since December, it's best for either MVP to issue an open challenge on Smackdown and have Hardy (over the Tron) accept it OR have Hardy attack MVP this coming Monday on the three-hour Raw. If they wait until next week, I fear it won't be enough time to make the match meaningful.

Kane: I fully expect Kane to be in the Money in the Bank match.

the Great Khali: See the news above. Khali + ladders = awesomeness

Mark Henry: Good thing Henry signed that long term contract. Considering he's been MIA on Smackdown since the Royal Rumble, there's no chance of Henry making the card.

Chuck Palumbo/Jaime Noble: What might be the best feud on Smackdown just doesn't have enough sizzle for the Wrestlemania card. Pity.

    Wrap Up

I'll leave you with my prediction as to what will be added to the Wrestlemania card. I'm assuming that only 2 more matches will be added. Here's my additions:

  • John Morrison, Kane, and the Great Khali will be added to the Money in the Bank Ladder Match.
  • Extreme Rules Match for the ECW Championship: Chavo Guerrero © vs. CM Punk
  • United States Championship: MVP © vs. Matt Hardy

Yes, I know I took Morrison over Burke. Thing is Morrison was a former champion and could pull out some sick spots in the Money in the Bank match. As for the other two matches, both would be solid additions to a pretty good card. Finally, I just wish I could find room for this man but it's not looking so good:

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!!!

Back in January 17th, I wrote a nifty list counting down the IWC Top 15 . Overall, most people enjoyed my list and I got some props from JD Dunn, Randle, and even Meehan. Flash forward to last weekend when I received an email from funnyman Derek Burgan (#9). Derek just returned to one of my favorite columns, The Wrestling Enjoyment Index . As the title states, Derek comments on many newsworthy pieces and includes a rating on how he feels regarding the news item. Throw in many hilarious pictures and it's always a good read.

Well, Derek just added a new feature to his WEI: Five Things You Didn't Know about a IWC Superstar and lo and behold, he wanted me for it!!! As you can read in the above link, I am featured in this week's WEI . And seeing as this is my own news report, I feel like posting these five items right here right now!

Five Things You Didn't Know About Me!

    1. Let's get the obvious out of the way. Unlike my name states, I'm not Small. Seriously, I'm taller than you think. I guess the best way to describe me is that I am as tall as the Rock, have the boobs of Michelle McCool, and the thighs of Trevor Murdoch. I don't know how appealing that image is but it can't be any worse than Big Daddy V's current ring attire.

    2. Having a Thursday News Report column at 411Mania has its perks. If you were to Google my name, I am 3rd in the Search Results. You must admit that's pretty darn impressive. I bet that bum who coaches track and field at Marshall or the loser who has a PhD in Audiology and Speech Sciences wishes they could get hits for posting pictures of Bobby Lashley's cheeseburger obsession.

    3. While my friends got the memo in 2002 that wrestling was not cool anymore, my Inbox must have been full. Sadly, I sat through countless Test pushes, Heidenreich: Frozen Nazi Poet, the year 2005, and most recently, the Great Khali's imitation of a Magic Bullet. Worst part of it all: I didn't even have an avenue to filter out my aggression. And when I did finally receive one, I was stuck with Online Heat duty.

    4. I am planning on voting for Barack Obama not because of his politics; rather, I am memorized by his voice. If you were to close your eyes and listen to him speak, he sounds just like the Rock. I can't wait until he tells that jabroni Osama bin Laden that his ass is getting checked into the Smackdown hotel. Or when he asks Hilary if she likes strudel.

    5. I contributed to the downfall of the WWF New York restaurant. The summer before the restaurant closed, the local CBS affiliate was interviewing people on the streets of New York for a theme restaurant piece and lo and behold I was chosen. I gave some corny reason why I like WWF NY (I think I mentioned the food) and three months later, it closed down. What luck. If only I could attend a TNA show...

    Speaking of TNA…

    NEWS FROM O-TOWN

    Destination X Preview

Up until 10 minutes ago, I totally forget that this Sunday there's a TNA PPV. Mah bad.

Here's the card for those that might care (SPOILERS):

Six Man Action: Samoa Joe, Christian Cage, and Kevin Nash vs. The Angle Alliance
Elevation X: Rhyno vs. James Storm
X-Division Title: Black Machismo Jay Lethal © vs. Petey Williams
Strap Match: Booker T vs. Robert Roode
Knockouts Title: Amazing Kong © vs. ODB vs. Gail Kim
Fish Market Street Fight: Team 3D vs. Shark Boy & Curry Man

Yawn. Personally, I'm awaiting the Lockdown lineup as there's a good chance that I will be attending the show. Papered, of course.

    Live TNA Action

From WWE.com (how ironic), "TNA issued a March 3 press release on its website in regards to the company holding its first live TNA Impact broadcast. On Thursday, March 27, TNA will air live on SpikeTV. Future Impact tapings will take place the following two days, March 28 and March 29."

Between the ROH shows, TNA tapings, and Wrestlemania festivities, Orlando is clearly a hot spot for any wrestling nerd. As for TNA going live, I wonder if their non-stop pace would be negatively affected by the live atmosphere. So much goes on during each segment of Impact that I'm not sure if going live is necessarily a good thing for them. With that said, we will all be able to witness this experiment on March 27th.

    COMING ATTRACTIONS

I told you this week's edition was going to be good. Take it away Rockapella!

    Meehan's in tomorrow.

For the Thursday Small-For-All News Report, I'm Jeff Small… and you're not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the road to wrestlemania is so dull. it feels it's on a detour.

    I need a IWC dictionary :(

I hate how it seems like every columnist on this site, as well as all the people who comment on here, continually bash TNA.

It's like it's the "in" thing to do these days.

I know the storylines on the show, as well as some of the characters, could use some tweaking but there's no way TNA is as bad as everyone lets on.

Even though some of the TV shows come off a little blah, they almost ALWAYS deliver on PPV. That's not being a TNA mark, it's just being an objective wrestling fan.

I'll take TNA's roster over WWE's anyday of the week. AJ Styles has more talent in his pinky than anyone on Raw or Smackdown.

Thank you Small! I was sitting at the computer one night a few weeks back and I heard what I thought was The Rock and I turned to the TV and it was Barack Obama. If he starts yelling "If ya smell what BARACK is cooking", he's going to get a lot more votes ha.

    Shit, WrestleMania 25 in Houston?

Chris, I dont feel that any of the columnists are unfairly bashing TNA, come on TNA is screwing itself like a dutch prosi not getting any attention. It has all the talent they could possibly want, and i agree it may have better talent than WWE but TNA cant book feuds or matches.

The reason the PPVS are so good is due o the performance of the wreslers individually, not TNAs shitty booking. Fish Market brawl, drunk match, or a match with 27 stipulations, come on how can u not critisize. Its like buying gourmet food, physically shitting on it, and then saying to everyone....thats VARIETY....this is TNA.

if warrior came back and beat HHH in 30 seconds again, i think HHH would spontaneously combust right in the middle of the ring.

You're an idiot, Small. I don't see Jericho taking a shot at anyone. Did he come out and claim that it was towards Bret Hart or John Cena? Get your head out of your ass buddy. You suck.

All the talent in the world cannot help an organisation if the booking is pure, unadulterated shit. I think 411's writers have made it abundantly clear they like and respect TNA's individual performers very much, but it's painful to watch them struggle against their moronic creative direction. So the shows get bashed, and rightfully so.

Posted By: Finn (Guest)  on March 06, 2008 at 08:50 AM

TNA's booking is questionable, but unlike WWE at least they have feuds I can get excited about. Between Booker T and Roode that is a real blood feud that won't end in a sh*tty way like JBL-Y2J did, which could've been classic.

Also, at least TNA remembers they actually have a mid-card title worth defending. I love both WWE and TNA (heck I even watch ECW hoping for something to enjoy) but can someone out there please explain anything about WWE that is exciting right now? We all know Super Cena's going to win and so will the Undertaker, so that takes the excitement out of the only two belts that WWE cares about. Ric Flair and HBK could be great if they allow Shawn to revert to semi-heel mode. We all know Batista's going to beat Umaga, and unless they're actually going to pull the trigger on Jeff Hardy winning the gold I have no reason to invest in watching him win the MITB.

For once WWE give us something unexpected.

The Floyd/Show segment sucked royally and so did JR/King/Floyd as well. This just made them all seem like idiots. I thought you were getting rid of mini Batista in favor of Floyd?

There are TNA haters, but constructive criticism is perfectly acceptable. I used to order TNA PPVs all the time, now I haven't ordered one in at least 6-8 months, maybe longer. I just stopped caring. AJ is talented as hell, but he has been so devalued. There are at least 6 Angle segments each show, I used to love Angle, now he reminds me of HHH hogging all the spotlight. I do like the Booker T/Rhoode angle, it has been great back and forth and story telling. Kong/Kim/OBD is good. And I have been entertained by 3D lately, as well as Scotty and Petey. But other things just don't click. Does anyone realize that Tomko has 2 wins over Joe, but he is not in line for a world title shot? What the hell. But no, we get to see a 6 man at a PPV, 6 mans are for the go home show to a PPV to hype the big matches, not the main event itself. That main event annoys me more than anything else, cause it is almost exactly the same as 2 months ago (minus EY and add Cage). Its just bad booking.

Kaei, very eloquently put. I am really looking forward to TNA coming to the UK becaus I know I can expect some very solid, perhaps even spectacular wrestling matches with some interesting performers. As far as TV goes though, I very rarely bother tuning in. It's just two hours of disappointment after disappointment.

I'm gonna have to agree with DC on the state of TNA- I used to order the PPVs every during the 2005-2006 month before the Russo-riffic TV era began. The X-Divsion was excellent and even the heavyweight fights were great when the top featured Raven(in shape), Rhyno, Jarrett,(can't believe I'm missing him now) and Sting with the always rotating spot for guys like Harris, Hardy, Abyss, Monty Brown, ect... speaking of the X-Division, if I'm not mistaken wasn't Destination X the PPV that was semi-dedicated to it? All we have this year is Black Machismo vs Maple Leaf Muscle?!? I'll pass thanks and maybe dig out an old World X-Cup and long for the good days when I saw potential in the company...

Wasn't the line "Do it Rockapella!" Whatever.

Elijah supermanning dat ho is nice. Very nice. I'd love to see him at the big show, and then every big show after that. A year ago, Elijah was the future. I don't see why he can't have Chavo's spot.

Jeff was too humble to admit that in lieu of recieving money for contributing to the Wrestling Enjoyment Index, he asked that money be given in his name to the Human Fund. Bravo to you sir, Bravo~!

"Voting for someone because they talk like The Rock. That's a great way to
determine the leader of our country."

It's just as reasonable as all the idiots a few years back who wouldn't vote for John Kerry simply because he was Catholic.

And I'm glad I'm not the only one to see the Obama Bull. I've been saying "Barrack say, 'know your damn roll!'" for months, now.
