The Triple Threat 3.22.08: The 85th Edition - Sting's Return, Vengeance, Spotlight on Edge and More
Posted by David Martell on 03.22.2008

Welcome back to the Triple Threat. Alex is finally back with us this week. As of this week the entire Triple Threat works for Cinemark! Any who, this week we talk about Sting, the Vengence PPV and Edge is our superstar highlight. Please enjoy.

Topic # 1 Sting will be making his return to TNA soon. How do you feel about this?

David Martell: Sting is one of the few redeeming parts of TNA. This is great news for TNA and wrestling fans alike. Hopefully he will makes thing a bit more entertaining. I still wish he would make his way to the WWE before he gets too old. I much rather see him go against the WWE roster which could make for some damn good matches. Either way, its good to see him back in the ring once again.

Alex Mattis: Woo, glad to see Sting making his return to TNA. His pretty much the only "legend" still around that has the right mind for the business and puts over people when necessary, and his run in TNA has shown it. His put on many solid matches and has truly shown that he still "has it." I'm glad that he made the decision to come back as I feel he is a major part of the company and can still add a lot to it. I see him working some solid mid card programs and possibly a big title showdown between him and Joe at Bound For Glory when the torch will finally be passed.

Zach Brown: I'm really glad Sting is coming back. He's done great things for TNA, and he is one of the few wrestlers over 40 that can still deliver in the ring. I mean the guy just turned 49 and he's still a main eventer. The only other wrestlers (that I can think of) over 40 that are still in main events are Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker, and they're both only 42. He's also pretty much the only guy in the business to have never worked for Vince McMahon and can be called one of the best of all time. Plus, he helped out David Arquette and Jimmy King in that Triple Cage match. Seriously though, Sting is one of my favorite wrestlers of all time, so the longer he can stay in TNA, the happier I'll be.

Topic # 2 This year's Vengeance will once again be a Night of Champions PPV. What do you think about this?

David Martell: I actually went to last years Vengeance where they had the night of champions. It was also my very first PPV that I have attended. I really like the idea of the night of champions PPV. It is probably one of the only times you will ever see all the titles get defended, especially the tag belts, the US Title and the IC Title. Last years show was kind of over shadowed because of Benoit but it was still a decent show I thought. It is definitely a great premise and Vengeance always seems to be one of the better WWE PPVs.

Alex Mattis: Hey this is the stretch from WrestleMania to SummerSlam, they gotta have an attraction to fill the space. And if "the night of champions" gimmick works for them so be it. Of course this PPV may always be in the shell of the Benoit incident, but like last year they could put on a pretty solid show. I don't remember how many titles changed hands, but this PPV is a great chance to shake things up in the title picture before the second biggest event of the year.

Zach Brown: I really like the idea of Vengeance being a Night of Champions again this year. It makes a lot of sense because many of the titles are rarely defended, and hardly any of them are actually defended on PPVs these days. For example, the Tag Team belts are hardly ever defended on a PPV, and the same goes for the IC title and the United States Championship. Lately, a lot of the title changes on the less important belts have only happened because a champ got injured, suspended, or whatever else. So yeah, I'm happy that WWE gives the lesser belts at least one PPV to have the spotlight. Although for a so called "Night of Champions," last year's Vengeance was pretty ridiculous because the only title that changed hands was the Women's Championship (besides the ECW title, but that was vacant.) I mean if you're going to have a PPV where every match is a title defense, don't have all of the champs retain their titles. I mean if they're going to lose it, at least let them lose it on a big stage like a PPV instead of some random episode of Smackdown or RAW.

Topic # 3 Recently Chuck Liddell made some comments about Kurt Angle getting into MMA. What are your thoughts on those comments?

David Martell: Chuck is right. Kurt Angle has not made any effort in trying to get into MMA even with all of his talk. I honestly think Angle would get murdered if he went into the octagon. Angle has obviously gone crazy. Chuck mention that he doesn't think Angle has had any training and that if he's just going to come in with only wrestling, he's going to get his ass kicked. That might actually be fun to watch and maybe Kurt would shut his yap.

Alex Mattis: Well… he's right. I once heard that Kurt said that he could beat Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell now, both of those fights would end in the first round with Angle down and out. Angle could discipline himself and really make a solid effort at MMA, but for right now all he is doing is taking out of his ass. He has a much better chance of setting up a submission wrestling match with Randy Couture than a legit MMA fight. So for the time being, Chuck Liddell stating that Angle is living in a "dream world" is quite accurate.

Zach Brown: I completely agree with Chuck Liddell on this one. Even though I'm a huge fan of Kurt Angle, I have to admit that pure wrestling skills can't instantly translate well to MMA. Sure, Kurt will be able to dominate with takedowns and sprawling and getting a dominant position. Kurt could probably get a good mount or get someone's back fairly easily in a fight. But what could he do with it? Has he been training for striking or submissions? I have no idea. To my knowledge, he is just going into the fight with his wrestling ability alone, and that is a bad idea. Wrestling is a great skill to have in MMA, but it simply doesn't finish fights. With the right amount of training, Kurt could definitely make some noise in the world of Mixed Martial Arts. But as of right now, Kurt is going in as a one-dimensional fighter, and that won't get him very far. The best fighters of all time have been well-rounded ones with both striking and ground skills. If you go through the best pound for pound MMA fighters, (Georges St. Pierre, BJ Penn, Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, and Anderson Silva just to name a few) they can all end fights either on the ground or standing up. Chuck knows what he's talking about, and if Kurt thinks he can just walk into the world of MMA with only his current skill set, he's in for a rude awakening.

Topic # 4 Larry King will be having WWE stars on his show in the near future and it will be going head to head against TNA. Do you think this will affect TNA at all?

David Martell: I seriously doubt that Larry King will steal any of TNA's ratings. If it does it will be very little. Yeah, you will have wrestlers such as John Cena on the show but I honestly doubt that wrestling fans will turn in. Its probably just going to be them hyping up Wrestlemania. Vince always likes to get as much publicity as possible for Mania to get some more buys and that's all I think this is. TNA will be perfectly fine and there should be no worries at all.

Alex Mattis: Well I don't think this is going to affect TNA's rating one way or the other. I think the people that watch TNA watch it every week and make up the 1.2 rating they get. So following the Larry King show when the ratings come out I expect them to be no different. That being said, I think that the Larry King rating may go up a bit, not much but a bit, when the E faithful tune it. There are some fans that will watch absolutely anything that has to do with the E, and expect the King rating to show that if only slightly.

Zach Brown: Who is honestly going to watch Larry King over TNA? Does Larry King really appeal to wrestling fans? What could the guys talk about? If Larry King actually asks hard hitting questions about steroid use or Chris Benoit, I'd be surprised. I don't know if it was planned that they are going up against TNA, but it's just a stupid premise really. If Larry King actually draws more viewers than TNA, I think it would be from people who actually watch Larry King, and not from wrestling fans who are genuinely more interested in the interviews instead of TNA. The fact is, talk shows like Larry King are usually boring. If TNA beats Larry King in the ratings, it would only be because TNA is actually putting on wrestling, and over on Larry King, we're just listening to wrestlers talk. Big whoop.

What are your thoughts on Edge?

David Martell: I really don't see why people hate Edge so much. He isn't a bad wrestler and he does have some pretty damn good promos. Yeah, he is mixed up in a ridiculous storyline with Vickie Guerrero but I don't think that affects his overall career. He has had great matches such as TLC 1 and 2, the hardcore match with Foley at Mania, and even some decent bouts with John Cena. I think he gets over great as a chicken shit heel. I like Edge because he is willing to go the distance when needed and is usually up for anything. I think his match at Mania could be really good with the Undertaker. I just wish he would do the damn electric chair drop again. Back in the day when he was with Christian, he was amazing. How can we forget the hair vs. hair match with him and Angle? Overall I think Edge is a pretty decent wrestler who at times totally reeks of awesomeness.

Alex Mattis: Ahhhh, Edge. Anyone who reads anything I write knows that can't stand Edge and have even gone as far as to say that he is the most overrated wrestler of the past decade. I have no idea why he gets the props he does, I don't know how he is seen in any light as a top tier talent, and I don't know why he has so many fans that defend him to me. But I did love a certain era of Edge's career, the E & C era. He and Christian were so genius during this period… but looking at the present. Edge has taken himself to a new low in my book with his recent "love" angle with Vickie Guerrero, but that doesn't change the fact that the E views him as a top heel. And I've already stated that I think he is going to beat Taker clean at Mania, I hope my prediction isn't true but we'll have to wait and see.

Zach Brown: I have mixed feelings about Edge. I have to admit, it's pretty cool that he used to be a WWE fan like all of us, and now he's living his dream. Sometimes I think he can say some of the funniest stuff on WWE, and every once in a while, I think he's a pretty good heel (despite what Alex may say.) Plus his tag team with Christian was golden. While I like his personality and his mic skills, I really don't care for his wrestling ability all that much. A spear can be devastating if used correctly, but Edge's spear is pretty much one of the least powerful finishing moves that I can think of in WWE. I mean it's pretty unrealistic to me when his opponent can be dominating the entire match, but if Edge lands a spear, it's game over. It's kind of like the Pedigree or the STFU in terms of match ending-ness. But unlike those moves, Edge's spear never looks devastating enough to actually end a match in a heartbeat. An Edgecution is a little more convincing, but I never really see him do that move anymore. So yeah, I don't know…Edge isn't the most entertaining wrestler in my eyes. Some people love him for some reason, but I'm just not one of those guys. Plus some of the storylines he's been involved in are pretty stupid. Like the Vickie Guerrero stuff is pretty disgusting at the very least. That being said, he's not my least favorite WWE wrestler by any means. But for a main eventer, he's definitely not at the top of my list.

Here is something Edge is remembered by.

That's it for the Triple Threat this week. We have been having the lack of comments lately so get writing! We like the feed back. Once again, have a great week. Cya!

I for one can't wait for Sting to return. I really hope that TNA listens to him and lets him put over the younger talent. I really believe that Christopher Daniels would not need the Curry Man gimmick had they let him win that feud with Sting.

Smart move of the WWE to make Vengeance the night of champions again. After hearing so many complaints about the lack of title matches at WM this justifies things a bit.

Lidell-Angle: Dont' see it happening unless it's a submission match. Actually TNA should make it happen, people would watch and plus it moves Angle away from the title scene.

Edge needs to stop using that spear. It's not convincing as a finisher and he needs to go back to the Edgecution.

Last years vengeance night of the champions was ONLY the worst waste of 40 dollars all year.....

Payed for a 3 hour show, it was over by 25 till 11.

It sucked.

Correction to Edge's credentials needs to be made. He was not the winner of the MITB in 2007. It was Kennedy. Edge just won the case/contract from him when he injured his arm last year, then cashed it in on Undertaker when he was injured and needed time away.

i like edge. he is an awesome heel. i actually like his angle with vickie. it shows how low he is willing to go to be champ. it adds to his total prick factor.

Edge is my favortie wrestler. i'll admit, at first i just liked him cause he was with Lita, but now i think hes nothing but greatness. i do HATE the Vickie angle, simply because WWE wants us to forget that he was with Lita for a year and a half, and that without Lita he wouldnt be so popular.

but hes still my fav. wrestler nevertheless.
