The Wrestling News Experience: 03.31.08
Posted by Stephen Randle on 03.31.2008

Good morning everyone, and welcome to the Experience. I am Stephen Randle, and I've experienced the first sign that I need to leave my crappy job: nightmares about being at work, resulting in waking up feeling like you've been at work rather than asleep. Considering the next sign is attempting to murder co-workers, I think I'd better step lively. But seriously, WrestleMania was last night, and Opening Day is today, so who am I to complain?

Three weeks, two essays, one presentation, one exam, and a second degree is under the belt. Damn, I'm well educated.

Moving on.

PPV In Review - WWE WrestleMania XXIV

Larry has the live coverage, and a bevy of 411 staff has Instant Access. Plus, I dug into my meagre savings to pay for the biggest show of the year, so you get my own, personal impressions of the show itself.

JBL defeated Finlay in a Belfast Brawl (pinfall, Clothesline from Hell)

A big surprise result to the very first match on the card, which would pretty much be the theme for the evening. A decent garbage match, with a sweet Finlay highspot(!?!) as he dove through the ropes at JBL. Not sure why Finlay doesn't get his revenge for JBL beating up his midget, but since they've seemingly decided to de-push the entire feud, I guess we'll see it continue on a lower level.

CM Punk claimed the Money in the Bank briefcase

The excellent and totally correct decision, and hey, you could do worse than have a Straight Edge guy as one of your champions sometime in the near future. I was a little shocked that they had both "hardcore" matches right away and one right after the other. Great work from all seven men, plus a good spot from an interfering Matt Hardy. There, now we get that feud, everyone happy now?

Bonus points for Carlito and his "oh crap, what did we just do there" look after he and Kennedy put Shelton through a ladder.

Batista defeated Umaga (pinfall, Batista Bomb)

Well, that was…clean. Not a bad match, just forgettable, although it did feature a high level of Batista selling that I haven't really seen before.

Kane defeated Chavo Guerrero to win the ECW title (pinfall, chokeslam)

In three seconds, no less. So, is this the end of Chavo Guerrero's "push"? Frankly, they could do worse than put it on total company man Kane, who's been involved in some of the goofiest stuff and lost a lot in many years while still remaining a credible monster. I'd suspect this is sort of a reward for him, even if the title itself is largely meaningless.

Shawn Michaels defeated Ric Flair (pinfall, Sweet Chin Music)

The emotion was high, and I'd be lying if it didn't affect me as well. I was never the biggest Flair fan, being a WWE mark first and foremost, but I respect what Flair has done for the business, and I'm proud to have been able to, at least, see his very last match. To see a man, knowing he's about to wrestle his final match, and know he's going to lose, and still walk out, head held high, and put on a performance like I saw tonight…it gives you chills.

Beth Phoenix and Melina defeated Maria and Ashley in a Lumberjack Match (pinfall, Fisherman's Buster)

I'm kind of glad they let Phoenix keep her level of bad-assery and relevance in the middle of a very silly match. This will mostly be remembered for all the lights in the Citrus Dome going out in mid-match, and yet the ladies kept going, which is pretty impressive. The match sucked, but nobody's going to care about that.

Randy Orton defeated John Cena and Triple H in a Triple Threat Match to retain the WWE title (Orton pins Cena, stole the pin off a Pedigree)

This match disappointed, and not just the result. I think I expected a more titanic battle, but maybe I've been spoiled by the WrestleMania XX triple threat match. Plus, the finish came straight out of nowhere after the bulk of the action featured Cena and Trip. Definitely slightly killed the crowd and the atmosphere here at home.

Floyd Mayweather defeated The Big Show (KO, brass knuckles)

This was incredibly fun in terms of action, and I thought that Show and Mayweather definitely made the best out of what they had to work with. Even though I realize the argument for Mayweather winning is obvious, the ending was really deflating, and I think the crowd felt the same way. Show just doesn't get the respect he deserves sometimes.

The Undertaker defeated Edge to win the World Heavyweight title (submission, gogoplata)

"Vintage Undertaker" count: only 2, shockingly.

Started out slow and not great, but built to a really good ending, and I almost believed that Edge was going to pull it out, against all odds. They also had to work against a crowd that had seen a lot of "down" endings all night, but they managed to get everyone back into it, and the result was a good ending to the entire show.

Also, for all the times people have (rightly or wrongly) complained about Taker not putting people over, this night he gave Edge all the offense in the world, and both men looked like stars in the process. Edge also cut a great promo during the show to promote the match, and looks like he won't be hurt too badly by losing the title, which was my chief concern.

Overall, WrestleMania delivered in terms of match quality, in emotion, and in pageantry. I have questions about the booking decisions made in terms of who won, but I did feel I got my money's worth in the end.

What's On Tap - WWE Raw for March 31st

Another classic WrestleMania is in the books, and it was one full of surprises. None bigger, of course, than Randy Orton walking into Orlando as WWE Champion, and leaving the Citrus Bowl still clutching that same title belt. You can be sure both of Orton's challengers from last night will have a little revenge on their minds, so the Legend Killer will not be able to rest easy tonight.

In addition, Raw's Umaga came up short in the battle for brand supremacy against Smackdown's Batista, and you can be sure that he won't be pleased with that outcome, and neither will General Manager William Regal.

Plus, it's the start of a new wrestling year in WWE, and that always means new storylines, new twists and turns, and possibly some new big debuts waiting in the wings. Indeed, you never know what will go down, as Raw will be completely live the night after WrestleMania.

Around The Horn

As you could only expect with WWE intruding on TNA's Orlando stomping grounds, there were shenanigans taking place all weekend. Most notable, of course, is the appearance of Highlander Robbie McAllister getting caught on camera during the live broadcast of TNA Impact, watching the show from the crowd. Almost immediately, Robbie was sent home from WrestleMania, and will probably face some severe punishment, if not outright release. Surprisingly, word is trickling down that many TNA wrestlers are upset with management for showing McAllister during Impact, feeling that TNA may have deliberately screwed over a fellow wrestler's career just for the sake of taking a shot at WWE that will be completely ignored by the big company anyway. I can't help but agree, especially since it's not like Robbie is a headliner who can afford to miss a couple paydays and would cause a big sensation for showing up in an Impact crowd. He's a Heat jobber whose partner is currently out on long-term injury, who probably relies on a small downside paycheck each week to support himself. So, while Robbie is also at fault here, because really, he should have known better, additional jeers directed to TNA for being so desperate for attention that they're not going to get anyway. And on that note, I can't imagine what "shoot"-happy Creative member was backstage and got the cameras to cut to Robbie, can you?

Meanwhile, TNA continued to fire BB's across the WWE battleship, as several TNA wrestlers were present at WWE Axxess, telling people to attend the Impact tapings, and many WWE and TNA wrestlers mingled at private parties over the weekend. Is TNA aware that if they actually piss of Vince McMahon, he will reach out with his giant fist full of money and crush them with as little emotion as if he were smashing an ant? I'm just saying, poking the bear is all fun and games, until it wakes up.

Something strange was making the rounds on the Internet this week, as previously announced 24-man Battle Royal contender Big Daddy V was not present at last week's ECW on Sci-Fi 24-man tag match. He was replaced in that match by his manager Matt Striker, then replaced at WrestleMania by Stevie Richards. At this time, Big Daddy V's status with WWE is unknown, but I, for one, am curious, and plan to stay with this story until I find out something to satisfy my curiosity. Frankly, it's more attention than anyone's paid to Big Daddy V in years, he should be thrilled.

From the video game front, THQ has officially announced that they will be releasing Smackdown vs Raw 2009 in the fall, which came as a surprise to nobody, other than the fact that it looks like they might continue to release the franchise for the PS2. Meanwhile, Midway Games has officially announced the upcoming release of a TNA video game, which has been in development for so long, that I remember the original promo video featured the two biggest stars on the roster at the time: Samoa Joe and AJ Styles.

Damn, most of the rest of the news this week is related to WrestleMania, which you already saw last night, right? Well, if you did, you might very well be part of the 1.4 million buys that Floyd Mayweather himself predicted. I assume he took credit for most of them, too. Be careful Floyd, or you'll end up talking yourself right off the DVD cover. Just ask Donald Trump.

And before I leave this segment, I promised you a review of Bret Hart's autobiography, but I'm bad at formal reviews, so here we go. I know you can't buy this book in America yet, but you should really try to get your hands on it, as it's truly the first unabashedly frank perspective of a life in wrestling and all the flaws that revolve around it. For a Superstar who was promoted as clean and family-friendly, the true story of the Hart family and Bret's career in wrestling is, quite simply, shocking to someone who grew up watching and idolizing the Hitman. He makes no excuses for his mistakes, but instead spends his time reminiscing about times and people he's met, many of them sadly gone, and talking quite honestly about the lurid details of his life in a wrestling family, and later, in both WWF and WCW, both fraught with their own perils, as well as the tragic events that would shape his life after retirement. Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling is definitely not the light-hearted fare of Mick Foley (and is definitely not recommended for children or young teenagers), but I feel that it's of an equal high quality, and definitely deserving of a place in any true wrestling fan's bookcase. Highest recommendation possible.

In Case You Missed It

The last week of wrestling before WrestleMania was full of promos and some good, clean, safe wrestling, while TNA went live for the very first time, and not much changed. This week, WWE starts over with a new year, hopefully toning down the massive interbrand stuff they've been overdosing on lately.

WWE Raw - March 24th

Match Results

- Carlito and MVP defeated Chris Jericho and CM Punk (MVP pinned Punk, inadvertant Jericho enziguri)
- The Great Khali defeated Hardcore Holly (pinfall, Tree Slam)
- Santino Marella, Melina, and Jillian Hall defeated Jerry Lawler, Ashley, and Maria (Santino pinned Maria, schmozz)
- John Cena, Triple H, Ric Flair, and Shawn Michaels defeated Randy Orton, Big Show, JBL, and Umaga (Orton submits to Flair, Figure Four Leglock)

Notes

- Many WrestleMania-related promos were cut.

- Finlay and Batista interfered in the eight-man tag match, taking out their Mania opponents. Big Show abandoned Orton because he's big and he can. Triple H and Cena fought to the back on their own, leaving Shawn and Flair against Orton for the finish.

ECW on Sci Fi - March 25th

Match Results

- 12 men defeated 12 other men (Snitsky pinned Tommy Dreamer, Rockette Kick)
- Shelton Benjamin defeated Carlito (pinfall, top-rope Pay Dirt)
- Mike Knox and Layla defeated Stevie Richards and Kelly Kelly (Knox pinned Richards, corkscrew neckbreaker)
- Chavo Guerrero defeated Tommy Dreamer in (essentially) a lumberjack match (pinfall, Frog Splash)

Notes

- After the Guerrero-Dreamer match, the entire ring filled with the battle royal competitors, mostly beating on Chavo.

TNA Impact! - March 27th

Match Results

- Johnny Devine defeated Alex Shelley to earn a spot in the Xscape Match at Lockdown (pinfall, butterfly piledriver)
- LAX defeated Scott Steiner, Petey Williams, and Rhaka Khan (Homicide pinned Petey, T-bone suplex)
- Booker T defeated Robert Roode in a First Blood Match
- Awesome Kong defeated ODB to retain the Knockouts title (pinfall, Awesome Bomb)
- Christian Cage, Kevin Nash, Rhino, and Sting defeated AJ Styles, Tomko, and Team 3D (Devon submitted to Sting, Scorpion Deathlock)

Notes

- Sting was revealed as the fourth member of Team Cage. James Storm was revealed as the fifth and final member of Team Tomko.

- Kurt Angle has a training match against AJ Style and Tomko that was interrupted by Team Cage, leading to a big schmozz.

WWE Smackdown - March 28th

Match Results

- Mark Henry won a four-man Battle Royal involving Chuck Palumbo, Kane, and Great Khali
- CM Punk defeated John Morrison (pinfall, Go2Sleep)
- Jesse, Festus, and Kofi Kingston defeated Miz, Lance Cade, and Trevor Murdoch (Kingston pinned Miz, Jamaican Buzzsaw)
- Batista defeated Snitsky (pinfall, Batista Bomb)
- Michelle McCool and Cherry defeated Victoria and Maryse in a Wet and Wild Water Fight (McCool pinned Victoria, Wings of Love…worst finisher name ever)
- Chris Jericho defeated MVP (DQ, attemped use of United States title)

Notes

- Eve was eliminated from the Smackdown Diva Contest. How is Cherry surviving?

- Edge, Vicki, Ryder, and Hawkins held a funeral for the Undertaker's streak. Taker emerged from a casket and laid waste to everyone except a fleeing Edge. I know, I didn't see it coming either.

Who's Holding Gold

Shockingly, only two of the three titles defended at WrestleMania changed hands, and more shockingly, one of them was not the WWE title. I know! But all three title holders have to be wary, because the Money in the Bank shot is in play again, held by the Straight Edge Superstar, CM Punk.

Larry's live coverage of WrestleMania, right here!

Byers and Prag have the weekend news reports.

From the glowing box, Borchardt has Smackdown, and Byers and Larry have live Impact.

Short has The Navigation Log.

Minotti has Can They Be Champ?

The Triple Threat previews WrestleMania.

Ari has Column of Honor.

Andrew Clark (not that guy, a new one) has the return of the Fink's Payload.

Sforcina has a new Un-Dream Match.

And Corke has The Seventh Dimension.

The Gab Bag

A lot of suggestions for improving my column, some of which I intend to use, some of which are just to complicated. For example, title defenses in the "Who's Holding Gold" feature would eat a lot of space and not really serve much purpose, and while projected return dates would be great for the injury list, too often I don't get actual injury recovery times, plus WWE doesn't always bring someone back right away once they're healthy (see Lashley, Bobby). Plus, now they seem interested in screwing with my list personally, such as the Cena injury. Well, at least I'm having an influence.

Banners, however, are something I've wanted to work on. I just have to get Photoshop back on my computer. Oh, and not suck at graphic design.

And no decision yet on what I'll be doing for Raw in Toronto, but don't worry, it'll be worth it. Unless I can't think of something, and then it'll just be beer. Which is still worth it, right?

Also, Ottawa sucks. That is all.

And One To Go On

Someone important (obviously not that important or I'd remember their name) once said "As if it matters how a man falls. When the fall is all that's left, it matters a great deal". It felt appropriate in this case. Good luck, Ric, and thanks for the memory. Woo!

411 will have live coverage of the first Raw of the new WWE year tonight starting at 9 pm EDT. Larry's in tomorrow, I'll be back next week.

Have a good one, and always be a fan.

Flair-HBK made me cry like a it was General Hospital.

I'm so happy that my mom loaned me the money to get the PPV.

I had mixed feelings about the show. Some things I enjoyed, but others i found
lacking. No crimson masks in either "hardcore match" I was
expecting some juice especially out of JBL vs Finley. And more importantly to
me was the larged number of matches that were under 15 minutes. Hell, this
isn't Raw or Smackdown, this is freaking wrestlemania, with the exception of
the Bunny match and the Kane Chavo match (because they really needed to push
such a new and up and coming talent as Kane as a monster) I don't feel there
was really an excuse for the number of short matches. I don't want to be
negative about it all, I LOVED Ric Flair and HBK, I was wondering how they were
going to put Flair into a beleivable position on how he could convincinly win
the match w/out the rollup. And when Sean did the senton bomb from the rope
through the anouncers table, OMG that was defnitely the holy shit moment for
me. And the phycology, the selling of the "Internal Damage" was
beautiful. I knew he would bump like crazy, but he did it in such a
beleiveable way, that it made you have a sensation of disbelief. Like everyone
else here I read all the columns, I knew that Flair was to take about 3 months
time off before hitting the Amasador Role and eventually returning to TV as a
manager. It was like Moses had set it in stone himeself. But man, watching
that match had me cheering, hoping and praying Ric could pull it off. And the
whole time I was just admiring how much worked this match. It wasn't Sting,
but for the first time since I heard about the angle, I was glad it wasn't
because Sean and Ric were so brutally eloquent together, it built, gathered
& held emotion; with an ending as heartbreaking as the match was
celebrating. Kudos Sean, and THANK YOU Mr. Flair. You will forever be the
gold standard and the reason I loved this sport. Briefly, I also wanted to say
I loved the Big Show / Mayweather fight. First, props for the money man, taking
bumps I had never expected him to take. He gave his body in ways I've never
seen other non wrestlers do so he definitely has my thanks for the show he put
up. Then again I'm compairing him to Donald Trump, Pete Rose, Denis Rodman,
David Arquette and Jay Leno, so take that for what it's worth. I think they
booked it as well as they could have. Show looked like the monster he is, by
rampaging the money man's entire crew and no selling shots like he was at a
Turkish flea market. They kept Mayweather heel and again almost had me
beleiving that his managers were legit pulling him out because the ass whuppen
he was getting was not part of the deal. Again great job guys. And I guess he
earned his money too, I wouldn't let Show stand on me. The WWE title match
needed more time to tell the story, the ending was abrupt.

Maybe there are long term reasons as to why Umaga jobbed clean to Batista.
'member those skits with Burchill asking Regal for Umaga's spot? Maybe we'll be
rewarded with a nice little post-mania Burchill push. i'm calling it

People give Vince McMahon way too much credit.

This isn't the "territory days" where he could backdoor every
competitor by stealing their TV time.

TNA isn't ECW in that he can move his show to SpikeTV and push them out,
because they don't like Vince; not to mention that TNA is backed by a
billion-dollar company, so it is not likely there would be a "hostile
takeover".
