Can They Be Champ? 04.13.08: The WWE Title: From Now Til SummerSlam
Posted by Mike Minotti on 04.13.2008
This week, Mike Minotti predicts the landscape of the WWE title scene all the way up until SummerSlam. You may be surprised to see who he thinks will win the big one in the course of that time.
Well, I'm relieved to see that the Raw main event for Backlash won't be Orton vs. JBL. I totally agreed with HHH when he asked Regal, "Are you kidding me?" So now we have a Fatal Four Way. It seems to have become a Backlash tradition to just take the Raw main event from WrestleMania and one or two guys into the mix. It's worked great so far. The 2006 Triple Threat against Cena, HHH, and Edge was a great match. Same goes for the 2007 Fatal Four Way between Cena, Michaels, Orton, and Edge. Now, JBL isn't as exciting a participant as Orton or Edge were, but I think this should be a fun match at Backlash.
Truthfully, the match I'm really looking forward to at Backlash is Michaels vs. Batista. It's had such a great, emotional build. I know Batista gets a lot of crap sometimes, but if you put him in there with the right opponent, good things can happen. A lot of people have had their best matches against HBK. It could happen again if Batista is motivated. Also, I love how even after Flair leaves his retirement angle is still awesome.
Lockdown is tonight. It may have been prudent for me to write something about it in this column. Well, while I have been making a stronger effort to keep up with Impact lately, I don't think I'm going to be shelling out the cash for the PPV tonight. It looks like it might be a fun card, but I have a hard time getting the expensive WWE PPVs monthly as it is.
I don't really feel comfortable talking about PPVs I know I probably won't be able to watch. That's why I didn't participate in the Roundtable for it.
Today I will be predicting how things will go down for the WWE Championship scene from now until Summerslam. That means I'll be taking you through six PPVs, including Backlash and Summerslam. I'll get started on that after the Podcast break.

First off, I want to be clear that this isn't fantasy booking. I'm writing what I think will happen, not what I want to happen.
So, from now until Summerslam. Obviously, let's start with Backlash. We have Orton vs. HHH vs. JBL vs. Cena. First off, let's talk about JBL. I don't think we'll be seeing him win the WWE Championship anytime soon. He still gets a lot of crowd heat, so he still plays the part of a heel well. But would giving him the title again really increase his heat? He already reminds us every chance that he gets that he was the longest running WWE Champion in Smackdown history. He still is running from the fumes of that title reign. Why bother giving him another one? Also, after having a heel champion like Orton for so long, why have him drop the belt to another heel?
Cena is a guy who can win the championship again at anytime. Well, it has been a long time since he's been the WWE Champion. Probably the longest amount of time ever since he first became the WWE Champion at WrestleMania 21. It is possible that the WWE may back off on Cena dominated title scenes, as long as he can remain as over as he is. With Cena's strong appeal to kids, it shouldn't be a problem. I don't think Cena is going to be the guy to take the belt off of Orton. That would only lead to another Cena vs. Orton feud, and that has been played to hell lately.
HHH probably has the best chance to win at Backlash. Still, Backlash is Backlash. We usually don't see a world title change hands there. Yes, I know it has happened, but not since the WWE has adopted this "make it a triple threat/fatal four way" philosophy for Backlash. If you were going to have a title change in a match that is so similar to the WrestleMania match, why wouldn't you have the title change hands at WrestleMania? Some would argue that giving Orton the surprise win there gives more credibility. Does it really, especially after they made such a point to remind us that he only won because he took advantage of HHH's pedigree?
I think Orton will retain at Backlash. I think that's about as safe a prediction as I'll make in this column. We'll probably see the reverse scenario of what happened at WrestleMania, with Cena FUing HHH, but Orton stealing the pin. This will set up a Cena/HHH feud for Judgment Day. It's a match people want to see, and they don't need the title involved for it to big. So much so that the WWE Championship match will be scaled back, meaning that we'll see Orton beat somewhat a bit below the caliber of HHH or Cena. Maybe we'll see that Orton/JBL one on one match here. Whoever Orton faces (and beats), it will probably be a one time thing.
Meanwhile, HHH will beat Cena at their Judgment Day match, setting him up for the #1 contender. This will finally give Triple H his one on one championship match against Orton that he's complained about not getting for so long. The match will be at One Night Stand.
This time, HHH will finally win his 12th world title. Naturally, the rematch will be booked for Night of Champions. By the way, if it's true, I'm glad to see the name change. So many WWE PPVs have generic aggressive names. Backlash, Vengeance, No Mercy, Unforgiven, it's all the same thing. Also, Judgment Day and Armageddon practically mean the same thing.
Anyways, I'm sure the rematch will have some sort of gimmick applied to it. Falls Count Anywhere, Last Man Standing (a rematch of their second No Mercy match), Hell in a Cell even. Whatever it is, HHH will win again, defending his WWE title.
The Great American Bash will be next. Here, we'll see another HHH/Cena match, this time for the world title. There may be a gimmick applied here, but it could just as easily be a simple one fall match. We'll see another HHH title defense here. I know, I have Cena losing quite a bit here. I'm sure the Cena haters are going to get a kick out of that.
Well, that finally brings us to SummerSlam. I think two things can happen here. We could see another match against Cena, this time with a gimmick applied. Cena would have a good chance of winning that match. However, I think during this whole period Shawn Michaels will be on quite a roll, all starting with his retiring Ric Flair. This could put HBK in title contention, and we could see another HHH/HBK feud, though this time with both of them relatively playing the parts of faces. I know this feud has been done to death before, it's been quite some time now. Considering the WWE's philosophy of "if it didn't happen six months ago, it never happened", I don't think they'd be too hesitant to start this feud up again. With HBK on one of the larger roles in his career in some time, he will finally win the WWE Championship again at SummerSlam.
Alright, that takes us all the way through SummerSlam. What do you guys think? Am I on the right track? Am I way off? What the hell am I thinking predicting that Shawn Michaels will win a world title again? Be sure to leave comments telling me what you agree with and what you don't agree with. I'd love to post some of them in the next column.
Anyways, that's it for this week. I'll probably be giving the World Heavyweight Championship the same treatment next week. I'll see you all then.
Another great column, I agree completely Orton FTW at Backlash with a loss to HHH. How many times have you called it right before? We should start a tally.

I would love to see HBK with another title run, even if it means seeing him face off against HHH again. That being said, I'm sure Cena will be done filming his movie by Summerslam. I see the title back on him by Judgement Day or SS at the latest. I'll keep my fingers crossed for Shawn though!

I like you're thinking the whole way through the booking sounds very much like the route the E would go here. I do however think that whether it's at Summerslam or before hand Cena and Triple H will meet again title or not, like you said. The fact that the last time they met was 2 years ago makes this second meeting more important and I think the E is trying to distance out these guys matches to give their "feud" a more historical, memorable feel to it similar to Rock-Austin who met 3 times with 2 year intervals. To me, at this time I expect Trips to get what he wants (sooner rather than later) and get his title and I do expect it at Backlash but I'm not ruling out Orton holding on. I expect Trips to make a run in the summer facing guys like Jeff Hardy Y2J and possibly Batista assuming he makes the move to Raw. Now that can go 2 ways, I could see Trips having his money match with Batista and ultimatley delaying the inevitable. But what I think will happen is we will see Triple H Cena 2 at Summerslam where Triple H will tie up their series 1-1 and begin the chase to Wrestlemania 25 where money will grow on trees for the E. Now on a small note if Orton holds on we will see him and Batista at Summerslam for the title and Triple H and Cena in a non tile match that will get a lot more attention. All in all I see Triple H and Cena in some fashion at Summerslam. I find it hard to believe HBK will ever get a run with the title again unless it's being a transitional champion which would be more likely heading into Mania be it on Raw or Smackdown. The man works a part time schedule no house shows only international tours and big markets the champ needs to travel everywhere and HBK is at that stage in his career where he doesnt do that anymore so it is a longshot that he gets the gold back although it would be a great moment.

I'd love to see it. I'm watching the HHH and HBK dvds a lot lately and after watching the SS unsanctioned match, the Armageddon 2/3 Falls match, Raw 12/29/03 (which I was at live! woot!!), I'm thinking how much better this feud would be NOW (because HHH isn't stale anymore since being a face). I actually think I'm going to go buy Badd Blood 04 for their HiaC match too!
Cena will live without the title for awhile. They could even set up an awesome HBK/HHH/Cena/Orton/Jericho(?) match come Survivor Series (with Elimination rules). Then again, those guys may not even all be on RAW anymore after the draft. But yeah, good column! I'd love to see it (cept for Orton/JBL one-on-one). Maybe have Orton vs. Jericho part II. (maybe even give Jericho the strap then too).

Good predictions overall, however I think HBK isn't going to get another title reign. He's already said that he doesn't want it because he feels he cannot carry Raw any longer.

I can see CM Punk being that guy against " Orton. But I think he will go with edge on smackdown. I would love to see a Shelton push to see if he could handle it. Of course he would't win but would probably be a hell of a match.. ,aybe getting him over. which in my opinion would not be bad thing.

I agree with most of what u said, and i think all of that WOULD happen if CM Punk wasn't in the picture. Taker has the belt on Smackdown, so i don't see punk going there. i predict that Punk will challenge for the title in a few months, maybe at Summerslam itself.
But if u take him out of the picture, everything u said would probably happen. Nice column!

We will never see Triple H versus John Cena on a non big four pay-per-view. Are you insane?
Posted By: Guest#2478 (Guest) on April 13, 2008 at 02:25 PM
i like it however theyre all logical conclusions vince will never go for it the real question is how if at all will jeff hardy fit in the title picture when he returns
Posted By: swordslinger (Registered) on April 13, 2008 at 02:44 PM
Although i would like HBK to win a major title i just dont see it happening, so many times he has been on a roll and so many times he hasnt win so i dont see HBK winning the title anytime soon
And i doubt Cena will lose so much in the next 6 months but anything can happen

Have you seen the judgement day poster? Orton will pn JBL off a peigree again an this will make HUNTER MAD. I'm sure it's going to be HHH vs Orton hell in a cell for the title and whats more Orton wil win, this cememnts him as an amazing champion even getting the heel respect off JR! Then he'll lose it to Punk sometime either at one night stand, summerslam o evenstr after the cell match. I can't see Undertaker losing until wresltemania 2bh. And where the hell is Kennedy gone? like he' literally dissapeared for 2 weeks
Posted By: macca (Guest) on April 13, 2008 at 02:53 PM
I agree with the poster who called for a Shelton push. That man has talent.

The only thing wrong with that set of matches is that by the end of it everybody will be sick to the back teeth of orton-hhh/hhh-cena/cena-orton. I think a better option would be to have a final cena - orton match followed by a final cena - hhh than bring in a fresh face such as jericho/micheals/batista/hardy or whoever comes over from smackdown.
Posted By: sitheman (Guest) on April 13, 2008 at 03:25 PM
And where the hell is
Kennedy
he is off filiming a movie
Posted By: Guest#6272 (Guest) on April 13, 2008 at 03:37 PM
i think that the same at backlash orton will retain the wwe title.
But on Raw at the start of 2008 orton gave me a idea he said that he is walking in to 2008 as wwe champion and walking out 2008 as the champion it could be true.
Then at judgment day like you said john cena vs hhh in a #1 contenders match and the winner faces orton at one night stand for the wwe title. But my question is who will orton defend is wwe title at judgment day it could JBL or hbk because JBL will want a wwe title match and hbk because he reteird ric flair and vince will be happy about that and then reward shawn michals with a wwe title shot against orton but batista and hbk haveing a fued its persoal.

I am all for HHH, or anybody for that matter, beating Cena, anytime anyplace. Hell, I would even go out and hire all those "99 marines" that kicked HBK's ass once, if I only knew where he [sic] is.
Posted By: Guest#9204 (Guest) on April 13, 2008 at 05:47 PM
Personally, I'd love to see a triple threat match between Cena, HHH & HBK at SummerSlam. It should be awesome from an in-ring point of view, and it would practically book itself, too. All three men have feuded *and* worked together at different times; all three could conceivably take the belt at the drop of a hat; and all of them could realistically cross the line (read: turn heel) in their frenzied pursuit of it.
I'd pay to see it!
Posted By: Vinz (Guest) on April 13, 2008 at 07:27 PM
Cena/HHH will never happen apart from WM. "Our generation of Austin/Rock" are the words that come to mind...
Either Cena or HHH need to get away fom Raw in the draft. Get Batista to Raw so we have a huge fued with Orton/Batista and then for Summerslam have CM Punk cash in his MiTB and LOSE (yes lose, not win) in some sneaky (not bitchy) way. I would like to see Orton lose the title on Raw... havent had that for a while, maybe 2 weeks after Summerslamm, then Orton gets his rematch and loses. Punk goes on his merry way to fued with HBK (DREAM MATCH~!)...
Thats how i would do it anyway.
Posted By: Brad (Guest) on April 13, 2008 at 09:21 PM
What if the draft screws things up?
Posted By: Rob (Guest) on April 13, 2008 at 09:36 PM
I could see HBK being champ by Summerslam
I like pudding.
Posted By: Darth Mortis (Guest) on April 13, 2008 at 10:26 PM
CM Punk and Chris Jericho. Two guys you are completely forgetting as the WWE also seems to have a problem with. Oh and the Big Show who I believe is RAW talent.
Posted By: Joe (Guest) on April 14, 2008 at 12:33 AM
I like where you going with the HHH line but i think that at summerslam u might see jeff hardy take the wwe title, if he regains the trust of the company and gets back on the run he was on before he would be in line for a good run as champion, also the HHH/Hardy angle would be picked off from when hardy beat HHH at armageddon and then when HHH pinned hardy in the elimination chamber, the title match would act as a rubber match
Posted By: Gaz J (Guest) on April 14, 2008 at 08:17 AM
jeff hardy wouldnot suit the wwe title and wat u all on about cena not got a change at the wwe title rember he did'nt lose the wwe title if orton didnt giv cheap shots he would win the wwe title
Posted By: jake copp (Guest) on April 15, 2008 at 03:47 PM
theres no way hbk will win at summerslam, in my opinion as much as ai hate to say it and i hate john cena, i dont even watch when he has the title, its his time top dominate for the next 2 to 3 years, let us hope that his next injury is a carrerr ending one so we do not have to sit through another raw with his lame wannabe rap opening music.
