The Seventh Dimension 05.02.08: The Generation Blame
Posted by T.G. Corke on 05.02.2008

Once again this week, the events on the green baize at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre (in other words, the World Snooker Championship) has been devoted much more of my attention than wrestling. After many cynics were starting to label it as "the worst championship in years", Monday's play saw an unbelievable 147 break from Ronnie O'Sullivan and an excruciatingly tense match between Liang Wenbo and Joe Swail. The next evening, Allister Carter made a 147 of his own, the first thing of huge significance he's ever accomplished in his career, and went on to defeat former champion Peter Ebdon 13-9 to reach the semi-finals. And then, Joe Perry scored a big upset over pre-tournament favourite Stephen Maguire, winning 13-12 having dominated almost every single frame of the match.

So the semi-final line-up is Allister Carter vs. Joe Perry, and Ronnie O'Sullivan vs. Stephen Hendry. Obviously, with neither Carter nor Perry ever reaching the last four until this year, the big favourite for the title will be the winner of O'Sullivan/Hendry, who have nine world titles between them. Whoever goes on to take the title, this year's tournament has certainly proved that the old guard are more than capable of remaining in the mix, while some of the previously unheralded players have made major breakthroughs. However, it hasn't been such a great year for the younger generation, with only a few making it past the first round.

That got me thinking, though…how is a generation defined in wrestling? Is it purely by virtue of age, or relevance? And how crucial is it for an industry to effectively realise the transition period?

Let's find out. Well, read shit.

The Generation Blame

A lot is always said about WWE and, especially, TNA not doing enough to create new stars. I've always maintained that while this is probably true, it's not right to overlook the efforts made to maintain the stars they've already established. There's no point in pushing somebody to the moon if their star is going to fade almost immediately, although if they never try they'll never know either way. It's an important balance to strike, and I guess it's a matter of individual preference as to whether they're managing to do this at the moment.

One thing that's easy to forget about WWE's main-event scene is that it was only just over three years ago that Batista and John Cena received their pushes to the top of the card. Before then, Triple H and JBL had been dominating their respective shows for several months, and it was a breath of fresh air to see something new and different. However, that didn't take long to change as the ‘new school' quickly became the ‘same old shit' in the eyes of many.

So why were these two men, who had been undoubtedly two of the most popular men on either roster leading up to Wrestlemania, greeted with such distain when they received the belts? Well, the answers usually don't span beyond "bcoz they sux, lol asl plz", but there are a lot of other possibilities. Of course, one of them is the whole ‘changing everything people liked about Cena's character' aspect of the argument. But there's also one I mentioned a few weeks back which was that, in Cena's case, Triple H was out injured and he only had a midcard act and a tweener who'd been face just a few months previously (Christian Cage and Chris Jericho, respectively) to defend against, while Batista at least had JBL. Another is that they held onto the belts for too long – which was an even bigger problem because they won the belts at the same time as each other, so some saw it as the same reign being played out by two different men. But I think the biggest problem is exactly that – the WWE tried to create two separate eras at the same time.

In this day and age, one man does NOT a generation make.

It worked back in the territorial days with Sammartino, Morales and Backlund. It worked with Hogan as well, when the WWF was on its way to becoming the biggest show in town and its television was considered quality over quantity, so Hogan wasn't thought of as overexposed. But once Hogan had gone, there was a huge wealth of talents willing to run with the baton, and many were given that chance. Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart especially, with Diesel and Sid among others just behind them, carried the company through its toughest times. And then, once the Monday Night Wars had swung back in the WWF's favour and both Bret and Shawn were gone, Stone Cold Steve Austin became the big star. But he was far from alone – The Rock was rising the ranks, Kane and Mick Foley were probably at their peaks, and Mister McMahon had been born. Triple H wasn't far behind them either, so in a way this was the Attitude Era generation.

Now, imagine if when Hogan left, only either Bret or Shawn was ever pushed, and the company rested exclusively on his shoulders. Flash forward to 1998, and after Stone Cold won the WWF Championship for the first time, his next major title feud was a three-way against Billy Gunn and Vader. On top of that, Austin becomes ‘humbled' by his success. I dare say he would have suffered a similar fate as John Cena.

When John Cena and Batista were elevated in 2005, they were the only ones from their generation to earn such an honour. Had they both been on the same show, fighting for the same belt, it surely would have been better received. Instead, they were distanced from each other and therefore could have been perceived as two armies of one, here to force change upon us before it was necessarily ready to take place. I also think that having them both receive SUCH lengthy and dominant reigns simultaneously. If even one of them had a legitimate threat after their rematches with the champions they defeated, things may have been different for them. But it didn't really happen. So when Cena finally DID get that big program going with Triple H, it was almost too little too late for some tastes. That's probably the root of a lot of the ‘shoved down our throats' sentiment.

Thankfully, while this was going on, two other men who had yet to really find their niches were also progressing, in the same mold that Cena and Batista had been just month earlier. And strangely, they were both men that the WWE had tried to push to superstardom before those two.

Randy Orton is the next obvious contender, as he was brought through the ranks at the same time as Cena and Batista, but was the first to receive a push. He held the World title in 2004, which died on its arse thanks to the short-sighted booking of his questionable face turn, and was quickly shoved back down into the upper-midcard. If it wasn't for Batista catching fire during the Evolution days, I imagine it would have been Orton challenging Triple H at Wrestlemania 21 out of desperation if nothing else. Then, after both Orton and Batista were drafted to Smackdown, it seemed almost a certainty that they would face each other for the World title at Wrestlemania 22. Instead, Eddie Guerrero died and Batista was injured, meaning Orton took a pinfall to Rey Mysterio in a triple-threat title match where Kurt Angle was defending champion. Orton and Batista have, to date, never feuded. Luckily, Orton was drafted back to Raw and finally given another shot as champion last October. Although his time came to an end on Sunday, his story has been an integral part of this new age even if it hasn't always been at the forefront. He's a perfect supporting cast-member in a bigger tale.

The same can be said to Edge. It's bizarre to think that a man who debuted with the WWF in 1998 can be thought of as part of the ‘new breed', but it has to be the case. If he'd held the title once, then no. He'd just be a champion in a long list of them. However, he's been a World champion four times in the last two years, which is about on par with the greatest legends during the Attitude era. Although he'll never get a chance to really rule the title scene, he's the fourth wheel of the ship. A ship with wheels.

The thing is, though, none of these four men hold the gold at the moment. Triple H and Undertaker, two mainstays in the title scene, are the World champions. Doesn't that make this whole thing a bit moot, and prove that nobody really gets anywhere? Well, no. If it had been Triple H AGAINST The Undertaker at the top, then the point could be made. But because they're both having to fend off the four I already mentioned in order to stay at the top, it still sends the message that their days are numbered and one day the torch will have to be permanently passed. It's important for them to continue to look strong, anyway – as Ric Flair proved in his final years as has Mick Foley, it doesn't mean anything to beat a legend if an infinite number of rivals have done so before you. This will help the younger crop in the long run.

So, what will the situation be in another three years? It's difficult to say, but if I had to guess – Triple H, Undertaker, and Shawn Michaels will be contemplating retirement. This will leave Batista in a difficult spot, as he'll be one of the last remaining superstars from his age group yet he'll also be one of those who hasn't been in the business for that long. Edge will also have that problem due to his age and physical condition, but because of his experience he will have fewer complaints. It will be their responsibility more than either of the other two to put others over themselves. Meanwhile, Cena and Orton will still be going strong, probably on opposite brands, trying to establish new World champions Ken Kennedy and Matt Hardy after the fans got tired of their blue-chipper babyface acts and turned against them. And so, the circle of life continues.

What did we learn, then? Well, nothing. This hasn't told you anything you didn't already know – namely, that wrestlers come and go, but wrestling will always stay like a casual moss.

So perhaps I'll leave any doubters of the industry's future prospects with one final thought. John Cena and Randy Orton both debuted as bland ‘Johnny Boots N Tights' cookie-cutter faces with no direction. Batista debuted as D'Von Dudley's catholic bodyguard. And, going back several years, Triple H entered the fray as a Greenwich snob. And all of these men turned out just fine.

If you start worrying about what's forthcoming, just take a look at the past. It'll probably all work out.

Rubbish Youtube Quote of the Week~!

william regal sucks like hell . he is a mother fucker .

I don't even need to comment, really. Instead, just look at this animated Einstein shaking his head.

"No, no…"

On One Hand, With Mike Adamle

5) "That looked really brutal." – With all the enthusiasm of Sarah Michelle-Gellar opening a launderette in Milton Keynes.
4) "Atlantic City, where fortunes have been won and lost. But tonight, Lady Luck will take a back seat to athleticism, fortitude and cunning." – Translation: ‘Hello'.
3) "I kind of like this sock. I'm going to take it home with me." – That was after willingly and intentionally sucking Mr. Socko for about ten seconds while Tazz just stared at him in silence. It was like he'd never owned a sock before. He's Adamle the House Elf.
2) "Referee Mike Cosey (sic?), obviously smaller than these two wrestlers, having a difficult time of exercising his ‘thority!" – Abbreviating the word ‘Authority' by one syllable is über. Incidentally, he called the same referee ‘Scott Armstrong' at Backlash, and Tazz relished correcting him.
1) "…" – This was, of course, the result of his now infamous walkout. Since Tazz decided to leave with him and WWE.com has since promoted it like the Resurrection of Sliced Bread Christ, we can only assume it's a work. If so, where they go from here is beyond me. Are they really planning a long-term Mike Adamle storyline? Who knows. Strange, strange turn of events.

Anyway, thanks for giving us another talking point. You are, if T-Dog is to be believed, the T.G. Corke of WWE announcers.

Bye.

Well, that's it for another seven. Next week, I'll have no excuses. The snooker will be long over, hopefully with either Rocket Ronnie or Captain Carter holding the trophy aloft. And, with a bit of luck, my thirst for wrestling shall once again leave me with a dry thirst in need of moistening through the art of writing.

I know it's over now…

XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX

Come on the rocket. I hate that miserable Hendry twat. Mind you, have you enjoyed "Junior Pot Black"? The kids after winning being interviewed is gold. they were like Rabbits in headlights.

Snooker, Darts and Wrestling have one thing in common. Bizarre hero worship.

Snooker is giant in China at present, and Ding, Fu and Laing are loved and respected. As Was the Rocket, dunno about now.

In Holland darts in second only to football and people like Barney, Jalle Klaasen, Co "The Paedo" Stompe and Michael "THE AWESOME DUDE" van Gerwen get mobbed on the street.

In Wrestling it's similar. Great Khali is apparently the MAN in India, much like Regal could piss over HHH's face and as long as it happens on these shores we'd just cheer louder!

I think, all considered this means we need 411SnookerDartsandBowls.

Sports of Kings.

Anyway, quite decent Corky. Not enough comment on how fat Virgo is these days though.

You've got a point Corke. There isn't really a good amount of mixed generations on the main event, and so we're stuck with aging guys and young guys who don't have anybody but the old guys to contend with. Cena might very well be the last fresh fued a lot of the older guys get, and none of the younger guys are established enough to fued with Cena. I mean who are they going to go to, Kenny Dystra?

Younger Talent needs to be eleveated soon before It ends up Just Cena on top.

Great column as usual! I am going to call this the "Stigma Generation", because it seems like when a wrestler debuts or people become bored with the character, they just go on the internet and bitch. The bitching becomes organized threw the internet, so when you hear somebody in the crowd boo, let's say Batista, you can join along, and the next person does, and the next until an audible group is heard on the t.v. Cena's got a stigma and hasn't been able to get past it. The same thing goes for Batista, Masters, Lashley, and plenty more, no matter how much they improve their game. It's really a shame that these clowns have been allowed to ruin the show for everyone else.

I pretty much agree with Capt. Smooth. I think we just have shorter attention spans now. I'm sure if Orton were to hold on to the belt for a couple more months we would start turning against him again.

good article, though.

Actually that is T.J.'s pic at the top of the article giving his best "O" face to a possible Matt Hardy championship reign.

First and foremost WWE wrestling is based on personality, and in this era most characters appear cookie cutter, only a handful have one or can demonstrate it on TV, as such the personalities formed out of the last era(s) are the dominant superstars of the present.

nice article..batista cud still wrestle..batista learnt from flair n hhh..orton n edge learnt alot from their ass whoopin by the dx..but cena ?..what has he learnt? 5 moves?..the thing is..y cudnt u make y2j champ at the time when he was forced to lose to cena..y2j was given the torch from the rock..the wcw title i.e. .. n then hhhs injury..the mistake wwe made is the article picture..john cenas first title reign was ok..but since he came to raw he sunk raw and wwe with it..he was never a bret hart or a rock..or an austin..or an hhh..i understand that orton can be the next hhh..i understand batista is the animal..n he can become something like the next phenom with his strength n ability..his rage n his intensity..
john cena is not about his attitude or his character..its about his wrestling..the guy waits for the camera to be pointed at him so he can say dialogues..backlash 08 'u gotta understand that this is a do business'..did u guys hear that when he made his entrance..for fugz sake..i love the fact that people like hhh hbk undertaker r still on top..n thats the way they shud be sent out coz there is a huge gap between them n cena..batista orton n edge r excellent atheletes n have earned their respect..jeff hardy..how can u forget the guy..things hes done n things he can do r quite unimaginable..i am an hhh fan but if jeff beats hhh for the wwe title i wudnt be disappointed...hhh can openly say that hardyz hunger was more than hes coz hes been there 12 times..n hardy is the kind of guy who has the eagerness..he shows it by diving off a thousand feet..now orton is an exceptional heel..batista has proven strength..john cena has proven 5 moves n proven rap that sucks ?..gimme a break..its not an early move..its a move that shud never have taken place..cena a former wwe champion is ok..but a former 3 time wwe champ ?..hbk has done it thrice..foleyz done it thrice..what next..u make him equal hoganz record at wm 3 wm wins in a row..how can u expect a bret hart or hbk or rock or austin or hhh lover to understand why he deserved that with his fn 5 moves..im sorry but i can never understand y eddie had 1 wwe title to his name after 7-8 yrs of service..or benoit not even being given the wwe championship..a player of his talent n calibre..y didnt y2j get the same thing when ppl love him 1000 times more than batista n cena put together..i will support wwe for making hhh n undertaker the champz coz they r better than making a 3 yr experienced chump like cena the champ..coz hhh is the best wwe champ in history..n undertaker is a legacy of his own..all hail wwe for making HHH THE WWE CHAMPION..n please dont compare cena with talents like batista orton edge jeff hardy kennedy or mvp..they can wrestle

the IWC turns on anything that becomes too popular. everyone loved cena when he was freestyling to the ring and was an up and comer. batista was the talk of the town as he was the bodyguard being manipulated by HHH. just wait until cm punk wins his world title, the IWC will turn on him like everyone else.

since undertaker has been stripped of his world heavyweight title..i can see edge being handed the title..punk cashing in the mitb n winning it from edge..thats great news..undertakers moving to raw

Sid, I hope you are right. Can we trade Vicki to TNA?

The next breed after Edge, Batista, Cena and Orton are: Morrison, Burke, CM Punk, Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy, Lance Cade, MVP, Mr. Kennedy, Chavo, and maybe Helms if he ever comes back.

I think Elijah Burke has got some serious untapped potential that the wwe just do not recognise at the moment. He should be pushed.

411 Darts would be fantastic...book it!!!

I place the blame on mister Johnny Ace and his apparent inability to do his job. Jim Ross was impeccable. He brought Batista, Orton, Cena, Lesnar down the pipe in his last year or two, and pushed for these guys to be used well. Johnny Ace is more worried about guys like Kozlov. Sigh

Elijah Burke has everything going for him except some love from the booking team. He's talented both in ring and on the mic, and he doesn't have a lengthy criminal or drug record. the guy used to be a cop. he could do so freaking well if pushed right. Bring him to Raw and have him feud w/ Y2J over the IC title.

Mark Webster plays Darts in my Local (Kronenbourg 1664 is his tipple of choice. Pint thereof, ta!) if anyone from 411 ever got a darts thing going ythey could BOOK THE WEBSTAH!

Great article T.G. We in the IWC want to be like the media so badly in which we love to praise an up and comer like CM Punk but then bury him once he gets the big gold. It's just part of our cynical and sick nature.

People wonder why the WWE hasn't built up more stars I'm sure that has something to do with it. They'll let it be known that they, and not the fans, will determine who will get the big push, regardless of talent.

That said, I like how T.G. brought up the past of today's biggest stars (Cena, HHH, Batista) and remember that at one time they were nothing more than filler on a program. The key for the WWE in regards to future stars is to not shove them out in the main event too quickly (Lashley) before the fans can truly accept them.

Build them up so the fans can get behind them so when they do win the big belt they will have other feuds to be ready for.

I think this column is great and it goes back to WWE's booking. Too many rematches, no new contenders. Seriously, other than like HBK vs. Flair, & Hardy vs HBK, Hardy vs HHH what other matches in the last yr have you wanted to see?

What matches are you dreaming about that you will pay $49.99 to watch?

I seen enough Orton vs HHH & Orton vs Cena crap. Its boring and lets get something new. This is why fans get pissed. If you are building a new champion (ex. Cena) then you need to build challengers and not just established ones (HHH) to face. I'm talking about new face/heels at the tops, new challenges, new programs, something interesting to watch. This is why people turn it off and come back 2 months later because its the same feud that they turned off a few months ago.

right now wwe made jeff hardy beat hbk,hhh..then u made him lose to orton..doesnt quite make alot of sense..u made kennedy beat batista,hbk,undertaker..n some other big names..n u make him a no show against john cena..u made cm punk beat y2j..thats just a start..all these wins didnt seem bad at all..they were the right people to push..but where is kennedy standing now..no where..when khali arrived to the wwe scene he knocked undertaker out with one blow..n a couple of months later he taps out to cenas stfu..a month after that cena fuz him over 20 feet high..batista has still lost matches..cena doesnt job to anyone..cena hasnt even given anyone a pin over him..edge the wwe championship after cena came out of an elimination chamber..cashed in the mitb..pinned cena..second time again with some help..third time he gets injured n leaves the title..or else..who does cena job to..lol..if cena holds the wwe championship once more..he wont let go off it in less than a yrs time atleast..n he wont lose a single match..there we go..another superman era..i mean atleast u cud show him to be spiderman..but no..bullets get squashed on his eyes..i really hope the torch was passed to jeff hardy,mvp,kennedy,punk..batista orton n edge r a great big 3 for the future..they have great attitude..n proven wrestlers..
i ve said this before..undertaker batista edge big show shud be drafted to raw..have punk, mvp, kennedy, hardyz, rey on smackdown..n make a fresh start with them..n give them the world heavyweight championship..n like people just said..elijah burke n all the guys who have midcarder status can be properly pushed by wwe..even shelton benjamin y not..the guy beat hhh 3 times in a row on raw(lol) n then he totally sucked..wwe didnt take care of him..once edge is out of smackdown it wudnt really matter what vickie is..or what she does..think about it guys..if u do have 2 brands..y not have the midcarder names on one show..the midcarders will become ur top draws..speaking of which..y not bring in some new titles..for ecw tag team..ecw lightweight..n some womens title sd n ecw..
speaking of which..i wud like to see some of the big names retiring soon..coz if they dont..the fresh talent will never be able to rise..no matter how much i love undertaker hbk n kane..theres a time when they have to step out of the ring for good..
before that i wanna c hhh,cena,orton,jbl,y2j,hbk,batista,bigshow,undertaker,edge all on the same roster..
