Please…Don’t Hate 5.4.08: Sean Waltman (The Wrestler)
Posted by Julian Bond on 05.04.2008
In this special “Reader’s Request” edition, we look at one of the significant members of both the NWO (New World Order) and DX (Degeneration X) whose outside reputation is more notorious than his in-ring abilities. We cover the man formally known as X-Pac, Sean Waltman.
Welcome everyone to Please…Don't Hate, the weekly column which takes a look at some of the most hated on and complained about wrestlers, companies, and topics within the wrestling world. This is the first edition of "Reader's Request" in which I take a reader's suggestion for a topic and cover it for the column. For this week, I picked out a wrestler suggested by reader JBBTHWK@aol.com. They write:
I've never understood why there was so much heat on Sean "X-Pac" Waltman I mean he was a talented wrestler, decent on the mic when he needed to be, and he sold the Underdog appeal better then even Rey Mysterio did with some of the beatings he took from much larger men. I've just never understood why there was so much heat always thrown toward X-pac.
So the topic of the week will be Sean Waltman…the wrestler. I say Waltman the wrestler and not Waltman the man because there's some hate aimed towards him for his notorious reputation outside of the ring. From his reported abusive relationship to Joanie Laurer (Chyna) to his frequent drug/alcohol abuse, the man has definitely done some dirt in his personal life. For this column I really want to separate the wrestler from the man. I definitely don't condone his behavior nor do I want to ignore it, but for the purposes of this column I wanted to set it aside and take a look at why people have hated on the man as a wrestler throughout the years, despite his achievements in the ring. But first….
Reader Reverb
This is the section where two reader comments, one being for the weekly topic and the other being against, are chosen and I give my two cents on them.
Last week's topic: "Stone Cold" Shark Boy
Dave (Guest) comments:
Stone Cold Shark boy is Funny. I don't think he should be in the world title scene, but an X Division reign would be okay. he is a good little guy wrestler and he does Stone Cold's moves effectively. I like him.
Oh and Hater who are against imitation. Here's a bit of trivia. Ric Flair: wearing the flashy robe, Using the Nickame "Nature Boy". Is a rip off of an older wrestler named Buddy Rodgers. If Flair could be so awesome imitating another wrestler and making his gimmick his own, why shouldn't Shark boy be successful. I'm not saying he's a legend in the making but I don't see a problem with him being over on the midcard.
Interesting comment you made about Ric Flair essentially borrowing the gimmick from Buddy Rodgers and making it a separate identity of his own. While this example may not seem comparable to the Stone Cold Shark Boy gimmick, they do share a major similarity. While Shark Boy is mainly seen as a direct parody of Stone Cold, he's doing little but major things to make it his own identity, as with Flair starting out with the same flashy robes as Rodgers, but making that much more elaborate and that much more his own persona. I will never ever say that Shark Boy will become greater than Stone Cold based off of this gimmick (!), but he is trying to be original with an already used idea. Also, I agree on the notion that the man shouldn't all of a sudden rise to main event status solely based off of this gimmick, but again it's MILES away from his constant jobber status that he seemed to be stuck in forever.
Moneymaker Matt (Guest) comments:
I don't hate Sharky for playing this character as much as I hate Russo for doing it. How can you take a guy seriously who was basically a jobber for years and all of a sudden he starts acting like Stone Cold and is now an ass-kicker. As much as Jay Lethal rips off the Macho Man character he was never a jobber like Sharky. Russo is so obsessed with ripping off things that worked in WWE years ago that he loses sight of what fans of today want. Having the VKM "declaring war" on a rival company? The Black Reign/Goldust charcter? What about letting wrestlers own personalities and ability dictate the direction of the company? TNA has plenty of guys with charisma and athletism to have to resort to junk like this.
The question I have about this comment is why blame the Shark Boy character on Vince Russo when it could of possibly came from Shark Boy himself. This harps on the same complaints that are aimed towards anything from TNA, because in my opinion it's easier to blame Russo for every single solitary thing wrong with TNA than looking at the individuals and organization as a whole. The man seems much more motivated than he would be if Russo had forced him to do so against his will. The thing about Russo (which I will cover extensively as an upcoming topic) is that he sometimes creates gimmicks, like others do as well, that are a homage to the ones of the past. The Stone Cold Shark Boy gig doesn't seem intended to take a crap on the originator, but instead is giving props to it by making it something different. I think that Sharky had taken a risk in wanting to stick to his original gimmick while also wanting to add on something that has been done. I think that the risk has been worth it.
Before the "X-Pac Sucks" chants begins....
Why People Hate On…Sean Waltman (The Wrestler)
-Memories of very tiring X-Pac character
-Performs the same moves for every match (Bronco Buster, X-Factor)
-Has a track record of average to below-average matches
-His real life out-of-ring antics (drug use, Chyna relationship, etc) have made him a notorious "jack-ass"
My Reasoning for Not Hating On… Sean Waltman (The Wrestler)
To start this conversation off, I will state the brief history of Waltman's travels throughout the major wrestling companies. When Sean Waltman first came on the scene in the WWE he made an immediate impact as the 1-2-3 Kid by pulling one of the, if not the, biggest upsets in the wrestling world by beating then major superstar Razor Ramon. After becoming known for being the underdog he continued to carry this persona having notable matches with the likes of Bret Hart and Bob Holly, before turning a 180 and going to WCW and becoming the bad-ass NWO member Syxx. After a semi-successful run there, and then being unceremoniously fired, the man came BACK to the WWE for another run this time as the rebel known as X-Pac in the "genesis" of DX.
During the next couple of years he found great success rolling with Degeneration X, and then was taken of action in the summer of 2000 with a neck injury. So when he came back a few months later there was no DX gimmick for him to pair with anymore and thus the crowd totally turned against him. From that point on no matter what match or feud he was involved with (heel OR face), the very loud "X-Pac Sucks" chants started up and would never end until the man's match was over. So why has the man garnered so much hate and loathing from that point on in his career. My theory is that with the grand combination of not fresh gimmicks, sets of average to sub par matches, and bad outside real-life reputation the crowds just plain hated him and lost total interest of seeing him wrestle in general. Here is why I think that this shouldn't be the case.
While his last tenure in the WWE was remembered (lack therefore of) for not being so good people forget that the man has an excellent track record of matches before and after this run. In every company Waltman has wrestled in he has had a good set of memorable matches and feuds that showcased his superb in-ring skills. In WCW he was a unqiue addition to the already stacked Cruiserweight Division, fighting with guys like Chris Jericho and Dean Malenko, and even had a nice NWO/4 Horseman feud with Ric Flair, and forming a underdog/big dog tag team with Kane, all before the heavy booing began. Even years later in TNA, he put on a great series of matches (King of the Mountain, Clockwork Orange Match) that ended up being the surprise highlights of the PPVs in 2005.
Waltman (or any other wrestler in a similar situation) shouldn't be constantly dissed just based on a specific period of their wrestling career. The only reason someone should remotely start thinking about heavily hating on someone is if that person is currently continuing the accused crappiness of their way. So as far as I know (with last seeing him in TNA and Wrestling Society X) I'm assuming that he isn't in the same boat as he was in his last stint in WWE. Instead of harping on the negative points in the man's career the focus should be turned more to the good he has brought to the squared circle.
Good Reasons to Love…. Sean Waltman (The Wrestler)
Stint in WCW
As one of the major founding members of the New World Order (NWO), Waltman as Syxx had a number of good feuds and matches against a number of cruiserweights in the division. One notable match was with the up and coming Rey Mysterio Jr.
(Syxx vs. Rey)
Stint in WWE (As X-Pac)
After the initial fresh feeling of DX wore out and before the string of semi-bad groups (X-Factor, NWO version 3.0) X-Pac had a very good run with big red machine Kane. They made an interesting big man-little man tag team, which won a few titles, and then had an equally interesting feud with each other thereafter.
(Kane/X-Pac Rivalry)
Stint in TNA
When Waltman came back for a second stint in TNA in 2005 he seemed to have resorted to his younger cruiserweight self. His matches with Raven, A.J. Styles, and Jerry Lynn, along with his participation in the first King of the Mountain match, were some of the major highlights on the TNA PPVs for that year.
(1st King of the Mountain Match)
Despite Waltman's personal downfalls outside of the ring and bad runs of unmotivated matches, the man undeniably has great mat skills. When you look back upon his work in the ring years from now he should be noted for contributing a great deal to every major wrestling company he has worked at. So before you make your final conclusion on continuing to hate on "Pac" please look in between the lines of the constant Bronco Busters and "Suck It" gestures to really examine an excellent mat technician who can probably turn up the heat in the ring at the drop of a dime.
On The Next Episode of…"Please…Don't Hate"
After talking about the former X-Pac I'm feeling a little nostalgic for the good old days of Degeneration X, so I want to cover some of the other members in the group for the next couple of columns. I will soon cover one of the heated topics of hating today with the King of Kings, Triple H, but first for next week we will look at the now former tag team of B.G. James and Kip James aka the former Voodoo Kin Mafia aka the former New Age Outlaws.
tough one to defend in my book. Possibly harder than defending Nash
Posted By: Colin (Guest) on May 01, 2008 at 09:03 PM
I agree that Waltman is a tough one to not hate, especially since he even
generated a smark term known as "X-Pac Heat" - the type of negative
crowd reaction that comes from boredom, not a dislike of the character.
And then there's that whole porno thing he did with Chyna. Gross.
Posted By: Joe (Guest) on May 01, 2008 at 09:55 PM
Interesting read. Added Russo to the list of possible article topics?

You oughta try defending Stephanie McMahon if you haven't already.
Posted By: Blanky (Guest) on May 04, 2008 at 03:31 PM
Yea, I was just thinking of how the crowds and the IWC basically turned on all
of the various DX members once they broke up. X-Pac you just covered.
Billy Gunn- People totally turned on his singles run and his various gimmicks
before and after DX.
Road Dog- Basically became a non-entity once DX was over.
Chyna- Practically a joke since she left the WWE.
HHH- Ego, marriage to Stephanie, etc. I'm sure you'll cover it.

There is no defending this snotrag of a worker. He HAD potential but pissed it
away living his gimmick. Waltman is just lucky he didnt manage to burn EVERY
bridge. (Nash) Otherwise he would probably be among the "wave of
deaths". Hope he straightens himself out but dude....hang it up..its over.

His run in AAA in 2007 was great. This guy still knows how to wrestle. I'm
surprise you has not mention his recent AAA stuff, then again lucha is ignore on
the internet.
I never got the Xpac heat thing, it must be a smark term created by someone
like Scott Keith(who knows nothing about good wrestling).
It seems like people hate him based on his personal life which is none of you
guys business. We should only judge a wrestler based on what happen on screen
or LIVE in a wrestling ring.
Posted By: USAUSA1 (Guest) on May 04, 2008 at 04:15 PM
Ok... really I have to say this. I've followed Pac everywhere he's gone because
he really has worked in most of the major companies. I know alot of people
hated on him but I STILL think the guy is great in the ring. He's proved it,
time and time again when he went in the ring with some of the best and not so
good wrestlers, he pulled the trigger.
I may never know why they hate on him so damn much but you make a point, inside
the ring he's great and steps it up no matter what.
Posted By: Adrian (Guest) on May 04, 2008 at 04:34 PM
I will say this. He did give me one of my favorite mark out moments of all time.
When he beat Razor Ramon! I'm glad you are doing VKM next week.

i always had fondness for x-pac for being in a the revolutionary original
wolfpac with hall and nash. i thought it was a great idea to have a
mini-faction within a faction.
he can put on a show. i just think his reputaution overshadowed whatever he did
in the ring.
Posted By: reh629 (Registered) on May 04, 2008 at 06:33 PM
People hate him because he carries that persona of the little guy who talks the
most shit because he's always with his bigger friends, but as a card carrying
member of the Clique I can't wait until he gets out of rehab and Comes Back
To....RAW, if you smell the Kid is cookin!

He had a great match with Jerry Lynn at Sacrifice 2005.
Posted By: JO (Guest) on May 04, 2008 at 07:01 PM
I never understood why so-called "smart" fans always bashed him like
he was worthless. He had a really good run in wwf and was a major asshole heel
in the nwo.Good luck with next weeks 'In defense of' You're gonna need it.
Posted By: murph (Guest) on May 04, 2008 at 07:06 PM
How can you hate the person that, during his Wrestlemania promo, gave us the
line, "Your ass is grass, and we're gonna smoke it."
Posted By: David (Guest) on May 04, 2008 at 10:50 PM
You should defend Eric Bischoff
Posted By: lordRegalRulz (Guest) on May 04, 2008 at 10:52 PM
Waltman's recent match on NWA Showcase against Pearce was a damn good match. He
even beat the guy for the NWA Heritage Title for a little while. He's still
good...let's just hope the guy doesn't try to hang himself again like he tried
earlier this year.
Posted By: Dirk (Guest) on May 04, 2008 at 11:01 PM
Waltman's problem is that when the fans turned on him they didn't respond to it
well. It happens that fans turn on a wrestler. Hell I remember Rocky sucks
chants when he was a babyface...but they turned him and made him into a massive
star.
Xpac never got this IMO. The fans turned on him and they let them....once they
didn't fix it then there was no turning back.
Posted By: Stephen (Guest) on May 04, 2008 at 11:15 PM
X-Pac Sucks was his name, wasn't it? It sure fit.
Posted By: X-Pac Sucks (Guest) on May 04, 2008 at 11:49 PM
Sean Waltman called my Mom a whore during an autograph signing at a county fair
in Middletown, CT. I hate that guy.

Stephanie Mcmahon Chris Benoit
Vince Russo
HHH
Mike Tenay & Don West
Michael Cole
John Cena
Vince Mcmahon
Try giving me a reason not to "hate" these guys and gal. Very
interesting idea for a column. Keep up the good work.
Posted By: bourbonrich (Guest) on May 05, 2008 at 12:44 AM
I never understood the hate on Sean, he was a real pioneer when it comes to the
American junior/cruiser style.
You always hear about Sabu and 2 Cold Scorpio but go and watch the stuff
Waltman was doing with Jerry Lynn back in '91-'92, even after his first neck
injury he still put on great matches in both WcW and WWF(E). Yeah, his
character got stale and there was a period after his 2nd neck injury when his
matches wern't that good but were they any worse than half the guys stinking up
WWE rings today??
Posted By: G3KKO (Guest) on May 05, 2008 at 01:42 AM
Lol Deeno.
Not even the late Johnnie Cochrane could defend HBK the person 1996-1998.
Posted By: Rocker Dropper (Guest) on May 05, 2008 at 02:12 AM
Not to mention how gay he looked losing the "cry baby" match to Razor
Ramon back in '96. What a loser, I'm sorry. He's annoyed me his whole career.
Posted By: Denver (Guest) on May 05, 2008 at 09:27 AM
I hope you include HHH's involvement in the Montreal Screwjob as a reason to
hate him. I think that alone is enough reason for us Hitman marks to hate his
ass.
Posted By: ben (Guest) on May 05, 2008 at 09:40 AM
Just a minor thing, but the first King of the Mountain match took place in June
of 2004 at the 2nd Anniversary show, when TNA still used the traditional
4-sided ring. The participants were AJ Styles, Raven, Chris Harris, Jeff
Jarrett, and defending NWA World champion Ron Killings. It was actually a solid
match with Chris Harris and AJ Styles being the stand-out stars that was
entirely ruined by Jarrett regaining the belt. Jarrett, oddly enough, had the
infamous "X-Pac Heat" at this point, where fans didn't boo Jarrett
because he was a good heel and generated their interest in seeing him lose, but
rather because he was boring in the ring and on the stick and the fans wanted
him out of their faces.

Let's not forget that Sean Waltman basically saved Shawn Michaels' life when
Michaels was attacked by that rabid group of Marines. Waltman is a tough little
bugger
Posted By: Ken (Guest) on May 05, 2008 at 10:04 AM
Can't wait to read the Russo one. I hate how he gets blamed for everything in
TNA. He, Jeff Jarrett, and Dutch Mantel all book together, with Russo having
the least power of all. Nothing he does or comes up goes without it being
approved by the other two.

How can you NOT hate any one that styles their hair with Crisco? X-Pac Sucks!

ok someone has to educate me here, what is the story with Waltman saving HBK
from a pack of marines?
Posted By: stronelis (Guest) on May 05, 2008 at 01:23 PM
"ok someone has to educate me here, what is the story with Waltman saving
HBK from a pack of marines?"
According to Michael's autobiography, among other places, Shawn, Kid (Waltman),
and Davey Boy Smith were out at a club after a show in Syracuse. Trips and
Razor were across the pond doing a European tour. While Shawn doesn't remember
what happened, the gist of the story as pieced together from statements from
Davey Boy, Waltman, and witnesses at the bar, pretty much unfolds with Shawn
getting on the bad side of a group of Marines whose girls were checking him
out. The bartender told Shawn that he'd had a bit too much to drink so he went
outside to wait in the car for Davey Boy and Waltman to be done. The Marines
attacked Shawn, and Waltman and Davey Boy called in security to break it up.
Shawn woke up the next morning on gurney in the hospital with Sunny keeping an
eye on him.
This was the reason why he forfeited the IC belt to Douglas rather than
wrestle. The doctors wouldn't let him.

"try to defend hbk the person 1996-1998"
He was a young man lacking in self-confidence and surety of the people around
him who chose to drown his insecurities in alcohol and pills. Rather than deal
with his emotions and fears, he lashed out and hid behind an arrogant fascade.
I could continue on the psychological factors that were likely in play based on
Michael's own words and the descriptors of others, and offer an analysis based
the sociological nature of the human creature.
In short, however, he was a human being who made poor choices driven by
familiar emotions to most, if not all, of humanity; specifically insecurities
and fears that mutated into an unhealthy anger and immaturity.
Good for Michaels that he was able to turn that around and become a humble
humanitarian and a truly good person.
More people make mistakes than those who do not. Not everyone who makes
mistakes chooses to turn it around and become a better person.

I've never understood all the hatred for X-Pac. I mean sure his character was an
annoying little crapstain and you wanted to see somebody like Kane or Undertaker
pummel him into paste. But he was a heel that was his job.
Posted By: The Adamantium Elbow (Guest) on May 05, 2008 at 05:51 PM
I think a lot of people hate on X-Pac for the same reason they hate on Bagwell.
They had too much promise, when they came up.
Waltmans early work had me believing, that he ould be an all-time-great with a
decade of experience under his belt (ok, I was a kid back then, what the f...
did I know?)
I remember both Waltman and Bagwell looking like they had so much potential,
when they debuted a young age with a young look and did some decent stuff
(Bagwell teamed with 2 Cold Scorpio, which I remember loving). I thought for
both of these guys, that they were the next huge thing.
Other wrestlers debuted at a later age, or simply didn't have that 'young guy
barely out of his teens'-look and aura, so you didn't build the same kind of
expectations for them.
For me that is a major part of the hate, and it might be a contributing factor
for someone else.
Posted By: PaulOrndorff (Guest) on May 05, 2008 at 06:46 PM
okay, the censorship continues...
As I tried to post twice before...I only hate X-Pac for tapping Chyna because I
can't.
Posted By: MP (Guest) on May 05, 2008 at 07:36 PM
Great column man. You should definitely defend The Coach. If there was anyone
else out there who was a beacon for hate, it's Coach.
Which is a shame..the guy is a company man, he towed the line, did whatever he
was asked, including hosting a craperific Girls GonE Wild/WWE sponsored PPV,
multiple humiliations by wrestlers, fans, etc, and damn near anything else.
He might not have been a top notch announcer, but he's a hell of a lot better
than some (Tenay, West, Lawler, Adalme, Shane/Vinnie Mac)
Either that or give me space and I'll defend him..heh.
