Your News, My Views 5.20.08
Posted by Larry Csonka on 05.20.2008

  • Welcome to the Tuesday news adventure, the one stop shop for all of the wrestling news, scuttlebutt, tidbits and rumors that you crave…Your News, My Views! I am your host Larry Csonka and it is time for the news! I have changed up the beginning a bit, as I am including some small news items in with my normal things I want to talk about. I may be doing some other changes starting next week, we'll see.

  • A rather light week for the news, but I will do my best to comment on what I think you want to discuss.

  • Really Randle? That was it?

  • QUESTION OF THE WEEK: William Regal: Booking Change or Wellness Violation?

  • Unfortunate news this week as the CAC announced that Penny Banner passed away peacefully in her sleep, at her daughter's home in North Carolina. Penny Banner was one of the most decorated women in the history of professional wrestling, considered an all-time great along side the late Fabulous Moolah. Her accolades have included being the first recipient of the CAC's Art Abrams Lifetime Achievement Award, being inducted into the Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame in New York, the St. Louis and Stampede Wrestling Halls of Fame, and she will be the first woman inducted to the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in Waterloo in 2008. She was an AWA as well as an NWA World Champion, and some compared her as the Ric Flair or Nick Bockwinkle to Moolah being more of the Hulk Hogan of Ladies wrestling. After wrestling she competed in the Senior Olympic Games, doing Swimming plus the Shot Put and Discus throws. Banner thankfully lived a full life finally losing out to cancer. My thoughts and prayer are with her family, friends and family.

  • I had the chance to review the most recent editions from the SHIMMER group, volumes 15 and 16 over the last week. I have to say that if you are on the fence about checking them out, and haven't yet, these are the DVD's to check out. Two great DVD's that show Kong, Del Rey, Melissa and Dark Angel shine. I don't think you'd be disappointed.

  • American Gladiators came back last week and didn't do well in the ratings. 2.9 or so is the score. Some don't think that the show is in any danger, due to NBC putting money into it, but we saw how quickly CBS killed the celebrity talent contest. If the ratings stay low and advertisers get upset, Gladiators won't be long for the world, which is a shame because it is harmless fun.

  • The final crowd number for the ROH show in New York City on May 10th looks to be 2,300 fans, which is a new attendance record for the promotion. That's obviously great news for the promotion, especially because a lot of fans thought that they couldn't break 2,000 with out adding a big name (RVD was rumored by some) but they proved everyone wrong. The key is drawing well again when they return later this summer. If they can score 1,800 or so, I would consider that another success. They have the time to build to it, and

  • Get ready for the Independent Draft Spectacular II. My roster is EPIC.

  • ROH will make its Canadian debut on 7/25 at the Ted Reeve Arena in Toronto, Ontario. The expansion of ROH continues as they finally will make their long awaited Canadian debut. The jokes have run wild, due to poor PPV numbers in Canada and the fact that the ROH trips out west were not exactly successful. Obviously it is a risky move, as any venture into a new market is but I think the people that are predicting a sure failure may be in for a shock. I don't expect any huge numbers, but I think they'll do well enough to go back. You can't succeed unless you try.

  • Bobby Lashley and Krystal are expecting their first child soon, best of luck to the happy couple. Lashley will also be working AAA's TRIPLEMANIA, something that was speculated here a little while back. While they didn't get Goldberg, Lashley will be tagging with KENZO SAZUKI! He's been fun from what I have seen of his work in Mexico. They will face CHARLIE MANSON and LA PARKA. That's some odd shit right there.

  • Another preview of sorts for you kids, get ready for a new series of features here in the 411 wrestling zone. The first part of it will run in June!

  • How about those Penguins? Sup Ken Schmidt…

  • SANTINO TROMBINO~!

  • I now that some people are extremely excited about Jeff Hardy's return, but I'm not one of them right now. I wish him well, I hope he kicks his problems and I hope he lives a smarter life. But the uninspired win over Umaga and useless match against MVP just didn't do it for me.

  • Sunday is golfer's appreciation day at the local golf course. It is only $25 to golf all day plus free food. I will drive over there at 6am, shoot 18-holes, go to church and work, and then it is back to the course for another 18-holes, a hamburger and some beers. I love the last Sunday of every month.

  • TNA is looking into holding another PPV in the Northeast before 2008 is finished. Philadelphia has been rumored forever, and looks to be a certainty for 2009 if not before. I thin it is a great idea, because TNA has drawn oddly well in the Northeast and poor. I see no reason why they shouldn't run PPV's from the Hammerstein Ballroom and or the old ECW arena. Smaller venues, but sell outs for sure as well as awesome crowds.

  • That Wrestler of the Week column sure does cause some controversy huh? Newsflash, not only do we all have opinions but they are often different. Also, contrary to popular belief there is wrestling outside of WWE and TNA, some of it outside this country. Remarkable I say.

  • How much of a punk did Batista look like at Judgment Day? He told HBK that the next time he saw him, that he would hurt him for faking the injury. And then he shows up and says, "eh, maybe later." I guess they decided to change things for the Raw match. BIG DAVE DOES NOT APPROVE!

  • There is a new Whedon show with Eliza Dushku and Amy Acker. I am there. Catch the trailer of it here.

  • Jonny Fairplay's negotiations with TNA do not appear to be going well. He appeared on the Opie and Anthony over the weekend and didn't have kind words for the company. My thoughts? Eat shit Jonny Fairplay, you were a waste of money before and you'd be one now. Go away.

  • WEDDING BOOBS!

    ~WARRIOR VAN DAM~

    TNA stories, scuttlebutt and rumors:

LISTEN TO ME WARRIORS I confess I didn't photo shop the picture, but it is glorious nonetheless and needed to be shared. I think that if you follow wrestling at all you know that Warrior is set to return to the ring in June for a show in Madrid, Spain for NWE. He is even working out with RVD, which the above video shares some hilarity with us. Warrior is a true enigma, he has is wacky way of life, he changed his name to Warrior, he lives his life the Warrior way and even makes up words like FOKE. He has political views that many don't like, he dislikes the "gays" and isn't afraid to show it. But the one thing that people always end up asking is, "When or would the Warrior ever come back to wrestling?" As mentioned he is, and will do so battling Orlando Jordan of all people, and will likely take home a huge paycheck.

While he is coming back, it is in Spain, and that means next to nothing for the American wrestling fan. Sure we crack the jokes, but it doesn't mean much. Warrior is always planting seeds, because he knows if he comes back he will get a huge payday. He has mentioned that he could make TNA, that he could set a record buy rate if he worked Vince McMahon at WrestleMania XXV and so on. You have to give him credit; he's a smart businessman.

This past Thursday on Impact Sting did another interview with TNA, basically the same interview they did back in the day, when he returned and on the Sting DVD. He discussed his early career; how he broke in, how Jerry Jarrett was the only one that gave him a shot and that he started with Jim Helwig as the Blade Runners. THE SEEDS WERE PLANTED! Or were they? Now we could assume that TNA would not mention Warrior's name on Impact unless they had a deal done with him. But this is TNA! How many times have they mentioned a name or shot an angle with people that didn't have a contract? There's been Hulk Hogan, Test, Rikishi, Judas Mesias, Shannon Moore, Miss Banks and so on and so forth. They don't have great track records with that.

Was it a tease for something to come, or simply as I stated, the same Sting interview being rehashed for a 4th time? TNA is interested in bringing in Warrior and has expressed their interest to Warrior's camp. But is it a good idea. We know he's shit in the ring, his last WCW stint proved that and I couldn't imagine he has improved since then. He is going to require a HUGE payoff to work TNA, likely a STING like deal, roughly $500,000 for a year. So he will be expensive and he will SUCK in the ring. But will he deliver ratings and more importantly BUYS?

As much as I have a perverse desire to see a Blade Runners reunion, I have to say no. Why? Because Team 3D, Rhino, Raven, Christian Cage, Kurt Angle, Booker T and Sting have all failed at this. Sure they all had some initial interest, and Angle helped pop buy rates for a few months, but everything went right back to the way it was. I cannot see Warrior, who has been gone for so long doing any better than any of those men, thus I cannot say that he would be worth the money. Plus there is the fact that TNA's roster is STACKED and they don't need another guy that will collect a check, refuse to job and take a roster spot from a guy that deserves it. Train wreck possibilities aside, and what glorious fun Russo booking Warrior could be, TNA doesn't need another problem, they need solutions and he isn't one.

Your News: CMLL announced on their website that they would be signing a working agreement with TNA. This is related to the World X-Cup, and as of now CMLL plans to send Ultimo Guerrero, Averno, Volador Jr. and Rey Bucanero. The plans can change, because CMLL doesn't want their faces and heels working together, because of the coverage it would get in the magazines in Mexico. TNA has promised to avoid that, but CMLL still is concerned.

Milano Collection AT and Taichi Ishikari from New Japan will be participating in the World X Cup tournament.

TNA is currently interested in bringing in British wrestler Doug Williams, likely for the upcoming World X-Cup.

My Views: Slowly but surely the X-Cup seems to be coming together. I really think the team of Ultimo Guerrero, Averno, Volador Jr. and Rey Bucanero representing Mexico is a really good team that should bring the goodness to the event. I hope that TNA works with CMLL and abides by their wishes, because a working relationship could mean good things for the fans. Milano Collection AT coming in from Japan is good times, a guy that has really improved over the years and has had the chance to work with a good bit of the TNA guys. Ishikari to me is just fine, as I am not a huge fan. The team from Japan will be rounded out by Dragon Gate guys, no rumored names yet that I could find. Doug Williams could be part of "Team International" it seems, if he is being brought in for sure. I like Williams' work and it will be cool to see how he fits in. They have some good names confirmed and the event has a chance of succeeding, if the matches get the time and if politics doesn't get in the way. I am hoping for the best.

Your News: There could be a snag in the partnership between the two companies, as TNA is very interested in signing "Dark Angel" Sara Stock. Stock is one of the most popular women in CMLL, and the feeling is that if TNA were to sign her that CMLL would stop doing business with them.

My Views: And now I become torn in a way. They need to keep a good relationship with the company if they want to continue to do events like the World X-Cup. They have NO relationship with AAA and won't have one as long as Konnan is a fixture with that company. On the other hand, "Dark Angel" Sara Stock is completely awesome and would be an excellent addition to the TNA ladies division. These are the problems and decisions that can keep TNA a small company. Do they want to grow and sign the people they need to do so? Or do they want to play it nice, be everyone's friend and stay small. If it was a few years ago I can understand the use of working relationships and staying nice with other small and international companies. But they are finally making money, they are traveling and they need to take steps to keep growing. And when you do that, sometimes you have to be the bad guy.

Your News: Total Nonstop Action Wrestling is announcing that "Victory Road 2008" will be held live at the Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas, on Sunday, July 13, airing worldwide exclusively on Pay-Per-View. For the first time ever, the TNA Superstars invade Houston with one of their Pay-Per-View spectaculars.

My Views: And TNA continues to grow outside of Orlando as for the first time "Victory Road" will be held outside the "iMPACT! Zone" in Orlando. I think that is a good thing as they need to keep going outside and trying to grow their audience. Slammiversary was chosen to be in the Memphis area, due to the fact that they get some of their highest ratings from there and the fact that Memphis has always delivered huge ratings for wrestling. The Reliant Arena holds 8,000, with the TNA set up (which I expect to be similar to the one at Lockdown) it should be set up for 6,500 seats, which TNA nearly sold out. But again the key will be properly advertising and promoting the event. If I am TNA I talk Booker T into having his students help with that as cheap labor, hire them as ring crew and then pick a couple to have a dark match for starters. Booker can likely do the local radios shows like he does for his shows to get the word out and that is another good thing. I hope that they do well, but they don't have a great history of properly promoting their events. Prove me wrong TNA, because I would like nothing more than to be wrong.

Your News: The reason Roxxi Laveaux was the one who got her head shaved was because she was open to it when the idea was presented to her, partly because the hair dye and style of her voodoo character had stripped her hair and she was looking to cut it.

My Views: I know a lot of people were upset about this and thought she was forced to shave her head, but with this news I hope that it is all cleared up. Dying your hair does cause damage, and the Voodoo Gimmick and purple hair dye apparently was causing a lot of damage, and she wanted to change. She volunteered when asked, she wanted to change and I hope that she gets rewarded well for this.

WWE/ECW news, notes and happenings to the EXTREME:

Your News: WWE is reporting that Rey Mysterio was in China when the Earthquake hit today. The earthquake killed more than 8,600 people and registered a 7.9 reading.

My Views: I am not afraid to admit that if I were in this situation, I may have shit my pants. Seriously, I know some people that have been in them say earthquakes aren't that bad, but I am not sure I could handle one. And if I did handle it fine, hearing that over 8,000 were killed would just fuck with me beyond all belief. Mysterio was not injured in this. He was at a TV station in Xian, along with his wife, which did get evacuated. They were taken back to their hotel and were obviously shaken. While I am glad that Rey and his wife were ok, I think most people have glossed over the tragedy of more than 8,600 people dying. All this story has gotten is "Glad Rey's ok" or "Who gives a shit about China." The earthquake was so bad that rescue teams were unable to get in to help in a timely fashion due to severe road damage. According to WWE.com "Helicopters and 5,000 troops have been deployed in relief efforts, and the Chinese government intends to release $2.89 million in response to the disaster. The Chinese Red Cross is providing additional emergency assistance by sending tents and quilts to the disaster area." A huge loss of life and a true tragedy. Remember, no matter how shitty you think your life is, it could always be worse.

Your News: WWE's Definitive Ric Flair Collection DVD Set and their Best of Starrcade 3-disc set will both be released on 7/8.

My Views: Wait… The new Flair set AND a 3-Disc Starrcade set are coming out on the same day? And people wonder why I believe in God.

Your News: Jonathan Coachman's contract with WWE runs out in August, and with that being the case he has not officially signed a deal with ESPN. ESPN expects to still bring him in as an anchor, but with the WWE contract not expiring for months, anything could happen.

My Views: I would think that WWE, who apparently likes Coach, would let him out of his contract now so that he could take the new job. August is a long time away, and a lot can happen in that time. I would hate to see Coach lose this opportunity, as it seems to be exactly what he wants. The only good news here is that the MSG Network still wanted him and would likely take him on fulltime if the ESPN deal fell through. I hope everything works out for him and that he is happy.

Your News: The Big Show has said that he will be in a WWE film soon, which he says will be a comedy along the lines of "Kingpin" and "The Water Boy."

My Views: Call me crazy, but I would be down for this. I have enjoyed Show when he does wacky comedy (THE SHOWSTER) and liked him in his small role in the Water Boy. I think in a straight to DVD comedy; or buddy film he would be pretty entertaining. I'd give it a rental. Hell, he needs some kind of reward for his "comeback" to WWE.

    ~The HOTTNESS of Rebecca Knox~

    I love this woman!

    Independent Insights~!

Your News: ROH PPV numbers are said to be in the "high end of the projections," and it is expected that they will be signing a new PPV deal as well as announcing their next PPV date (July or August) shortly.

My Views: Certainly good news for ROH. While they had trouble in Canada, and one could argue that the PPV experiment hasn't generated the new fans they had hoped for, to this point they have offered up some great PPV's. If they can continue to do so, that is nothing but good for wrestling fans.

Your News: Dateline NBC is planning a special on the pro-wrestling industry, which would air in June, around the anniversary of the Benoit Murder/Suicide.

My Views: I was wondering if there would be anything mainstream regarding wrestling or Benoit as we creep closer to the anniversary of the tragedy. It will be interesting to see how they go about this, they could do a very informative piece, or we could just get another mainstream media burial of pro-wrestling. I will be sure to check this out when and if it airs.

Your News: Sean Waltman checked out of rehab in Houston last week. He actually stayed longer than first schedule and will continue to take part in an outpatient program. He said he's spoken with HHH about working behind the scenes for WWE and thanked Vince McMahon and Kevin Nash for their help.

My Views: I think I speak for many when I say that I hope Sean Waltman's latest stint in rehab was a successful one. The reported "suicide attempt" that led to this recent stay was scary enough, but when you add the years of drug and alcohol abuse into the fold it is even worse. Kevin Nash stepped up and helped his friend and as of now Sean Waltman looks to be loving life again. A backstage role, where he would have no stress on his body and would be able to hang out with HHH (who I am sure would try his best to keep him in check) wouldn't be the worst thing for him. Perhaps some time helping out the FCW developmental would be good for him as well. Regardless of where he ends up, I wish Sean Waltman nothing but the best.

    And I'm out of here!

I still don't see why Konnan/AAA want to use Bobby Lashley. He won't bring in the extra fans that justify his price tag. AAA supershows do well just on the talent they have right now and not outsiders. Even if they do get on US PPV, I don't think fans would buy a lucha PPV to see Lashley. It just seems like another case of Konnan wanting to get AAA mentioned in the Observer and other smaller US wrestling news websites, which is quite backwards.

That would be a nice lineup for CMLL to send, but CMLL is so hard to work with that I expect a total change. CMLL being so hard to work with is why TNA could take a shot at trying to sign Sarah Stock, if they want her that badly.

It would seem pretty easy for the two companies to work out a deal like Stock only working TV for TNA, with limited house shows thrown in there, and the rest of the time for CMLL.

Is one lady wrestler worth it? Sarah is good but she not a draw and nowhere near Mari and Fabi Apache level. In the end, it's not worth ruining a relationship with CMLL but then again CMLL will probably ruin the relationship first.

People been complaining about AAA spending money on Lashley too much, it just one show. They just brought in Steiner/Sabu for Rey De Reyes and Rikishi last Triplemania, obviously it didn't hurt their pockets. Why make a big fuss over Lashley?

As regards whether it was booking...

    WWE.com says

"STAMFORD, Conn., May 20, 2008 - In accordance with its Substance Abuse and Drug Testing Policy, WWE has suspended Darren Matthews (William Regal) for 60 days for his second violation of the company’s policy."

Mickie and Katie Lea, both should be there. I would do things to both of them. At once. Now on to the article. The Ultimate Warrior hates gays, right? So a near 50 year old man who is jacked like son of a bitch and who hates gays......is wearing a My Little Pony shirt. In the gym. Wow.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: William Regal: Booking Change or Wellness Violation?

I said from the start they weren't serious about him and he would get no real push. The haphazard way they threw that KOTR tournament together told the story. I love Regal, but hopefully this marks the end of one of the worst booking runs in WWE history. It just disgusts me that Regal will be associated with it.

"The reason Roxxi Laveaux was the one who got her head shaved was because she was open to it when the idea was presented to her, partly because the hair dye and style of her voodoo character had stripped her hair and she was looking to cut it."

I don't think we should be so quick to accept that story as fact. TNA management has been serious about cultivating a positive relationship with fans, and it's entirely possible that the fan outrage prompted them to make up a lie to get the heat off of them. If Roxxi wants to keep her job and be successful she would have to go along with it. Not saying that's the case, but in this business it wouldn't make the top hundred worst deceptions we've seen.

Big Show in a comedy is a great idea. I've always liked him best when he's allowed to show more charisma and personality, which he has lots of...and lots of people (including Larry, as seen above) still talk about those few weeks where Show kept coming out in different personas (Showster, Showkishi, Fat Bastard...hilarious TV, that was).

Hell, pair him with Santino Marella and I'll be there on opening day.

If Show can make a movie that's a quarter as funny as Kingpin, I'm there.

That Warrior picture is the highlight of my day, I'm certain.

Oh, I wanna make a request, too! Find me a good picture of Miss Hancock, for old time sakes. Stacy was surely at her finest in those days. Too bad WCW was already goin to shit.

    @ BJC:

you should photoshop big show & santino together while you ponder the utter shittiness of your idea.

I have actually been to a 2CW show. It's a great local promotion. I missed that show, but a friend of mine said it was a train reck live! (You know how you just can't look away.) I thin Sandman needs some help and maybe he take the WWE up on their offer for rehab for any former employees. It seems to me that he needs it.
