The Happy-Go-Sucky Wrestling Report 07.09.08
Posted by Steve Sullivan on 07.09.2008

Not that anyone cares, but I really frickin loving this new job of mine. I basically get to convince venues and concert halls to give me free tickets to give away on my station, and then get them to give me free stuff too. So basically, I will never have to pay for anything music related ever again.

With that being said however, my job IS going to keep me from going to the WWE Raw House Show in Lexington this Friday. So bah.

Anyway, let's rassle!

News: Trevor Murdoch was released by the WWE.

Happy: I was worried for awhile there that we were going to have the mixed tag team of Trevor Murdoch and Jillian Hall terrorizing my ears. But if anything, this was the best thing that could have happened for Trevor Murdoch. He's not good enough for a singles career. He's barely over as a multiple time tag team champion. Nobody was digging the singing.

The best moment of Trevor Murdoch's WWE career was that house show where Edge lost his luggage and had to borrow his singlet to wrestle in.

But before you anger filled, hormonally challenged column writer haters begin filling my comments section with your hate messages and your "Epic Fails", understand that I DON'T believe it was Trevor Murdoch's fault. Trevor had the pedigree and the training and every opportunity to become a major contender in the WWE. But it takes super human charisma and talent to go from being a tag teamer to a successful singles wrestler. When you think about guys who pulled away from being known only as one half of a tag team, to Single's Superstar, you have to get into the company of guys like Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Matt & Jeff Hardy, and Edge. Trevor Murdoch can not and will not ever have his name mentioned among these people.

Go Sucky: It's unfortunate for Trevor because a year or so ago, when Dusty Rhodes was head over Smackdown and ECW, Dusty wanted Trevor on his show. Apparently, Dusty had a plan for Trevor and was ready to push him as a singles wrestler. And given that Dusty probably knew Trevor since he was a child, Dusty might have pushed him into a title picture.

But of course, Dusty is gone. He's working with FCW and developing talents down there. And Michael Hayes, whom given recent events, you'd think would be all about a country, tobacco spitting, down south redneck like Trevor Murdoch, had nothing for him. This was really bad timing on the part of WWE.

News: TNA has released James Mitchell.

Happy: I'm honestly surprised he's lasted this long. This is good news in so many ways. First off, it means that TNA won't be bringing in three or four different guys to beat up on Abyss when Abyss returns. Relik, Judas Mesias, Black Reign….it's all been done. Over and over again. What was TNA thinking hiring guys like this anyway? Yes it makes a fairly entertaining storyline for a couple of weeks. But once Abyss gets past them or gets put out to dry by them, what other purpose do they serve? Judas Mesias may have had a career in the form of what Kane was to the Undertaker in his early career. But the others never stood a chance.

Ok so that doesn't necessarily take aim straight at James Mitchell. But with Mitchell leaving, that frees up Abyss to be either himself, or focus on other storylines that don't involve him being his daddy, or someone kidnapping his mommy.

I'm a big fan of Abyss and I really look forward to seeing what comes of his career knowing that we might not have to see anymore Battle of the Monsters anymore.

News: TNA Knockout Mickie "Moose" Knuckles broke her right femur and is expected to be out of the ring for 6 months.

Happy: The good part is that Moose had the surgery yesterday which was a success. She is expected to be able to walk out on crutches sometime today and that she will be able to get back in the ring again once she's healed up.

Go Sucky: It's never a good thing when someone gets hurt. And unfortunately for Moose, she doesn't have medical insurance either.

And say what you will about her. True she isn't exactly attractive to look at. But she was fairly talented in the ring. You have to admit it was kind of fun to see women in hardcore matches.

But unfortunately, the timing of this injury was awful. Sure she picked up a big win against ODB, but nobody is going to remember that 6 months from now. So now, she will likely lose her spot in TNA and return to the indies and start all over again. I wish her the best….mainly because she's a fellow Kentuckian!

And yes, Hazard really is the name of a town here.

News: Kane has apparently turned heel on Raw.

Happy: YES! YES! YES! This is what I was hoping for! Kane as a face has been an awful experience. I'm a huge fan of Kane, mainly because in the past, he and only he was one of the reasons I tuned in each week. I wanted to find out what kind of crazy stuff Kane was going to do next week. What kind of stunt would he pull off? Like jumping into a pit of fire, or riding in a limo straight into a semi truck? Will he light Jim Ross (or better yet, Michael Cole) on fire again?

I want so bad for Kane to get into a feud with The Undertaker when he returns (whom I DON'T believe Kane is asking about). I want them to get into another epic battle between two brothers and I want the Undertaker to "burn" Kane's face off so that he has to go back to wearing the mask. That was the best Kane character. Not this vanilla, movie star, child friendly Kane. A pissed off, sadistic Kane will bring in some good ratings and an interesting storyline that hasn't been used in awhile.

What I DO expect to see here is a feud between Kane and the McMahons. A lot of people think Kane is wanting to know if The Undertaker is still alive, but obviously by WWE storyline, the Undertaker is just retired. Not missing or injured. He walked away.

But of course, one person we don't know the "status" of is Vince McMahon. It would seem as though Kane was the one who "destroyed" the set and it is Kane who will be starring in this summer's McMahon Murder Mystery.

Go Sucky: I don't really see anything bad coming out of this. I didn't really expect Kane to get a push like this when he came to Raw so once again, the WWE has shocked me. The only bad thing here I guess is that this isn't really promoting a new star or pushing anyone that might need help getting over, but it's re-inventing a classic character. Which I guess if you think about it, with guys like Punk and Kofi Kingston heading up the main titles on Raw, why would they need to promote another younger talent?

News: C.M. Punk vs. Batista has been announced for the Great American Bash.

Happy: I'm really intrigued by this match. On paper, C.M. Punk has no friggin chance in hell. This is good because I still don't think that Punk is ready to head up Raw. I do like the idea of getting Punk in the ring with guys like Batista and JBL and really playing him up with the big guys. But I just can't help but to think they are going to push the guy too hard and rush this or worse yet, injure him.

Go Sucky: Unfortunately, what I see happening here is a lot of interference, mainly from JBL or even John Cena. So Punk will pick up a cheap win and retain the title and continue looking like some bozo who can't win his own fights. Some "face" champion huh?

News: Mr. Kennedy is expected to pick up on Smackdown with the same status he had on Raw.

Happy: I've heard several definations of this bit of news. My understanding of this is that Kennedy will continue to bob back and forth between the main event and mid card. Unlike on Raw with Kofi Kingston, Kennedy goes over to Smackdown while he's already over and will find himself in the mix of big contenders over there.

Go Sucky: Unfortunately for Mr. Kennedy, that mix of big contenders includes Triple H, The Big Show, Jeff Hard, Edge, and many others who are probably not about to put Kennedy over just yet. So Kennedy has his work cut out for him. And with the U.S. Title over on ECW right now, I'm not sure what they will do with Kennedy other than job him out to the big dogs for awhile.

And to think this time last year, Kennedy was supposed to be the big pushed superstar. Stay off drugs kids!

Rapid Fire!

News: Shelton Benjamin was moved to Smackdown because Michael Hayes is high on his work.

And thus begins Shelton's 168th push. The over/under on him getting pulled again is 2 months. Any takers?

News: Scott D'more is leaving TNA at the end of the month.

Scott had been working as an agent for the last few years since the disbanding of Team Canada. Which was a shame in the first place because he could cut a fantastic promo and really could have helped push a younger talent over. Look what he did for guys like Petey Williams, Robert Roode, and Eric Young. No word on why he's leaving as of print.

News: Triple H & Shawn Michaels are on the cover of Raw vs. Smackdown 2009.

How awful would it be if Shawn Michaels decided to up and leave after publication of this game? Don't get me wrong, I haven't heard anything about that happening, but there always seems to be one guy who leaves the company after they get put into the video game. But how bad would it be if one of the cover guys left! I guess the WWE learned a little lesson about guys like Brock Lesner and Bobby Lashley so they went with the sure thing!

News: Ashley Massaro wants out of her WWE contract to be with her 7 year old daughter.

Good for her…better for us!

News: Smackdown scored a 1.6 rating on the 4th of July episode.

Don't read into that too much. That 1.6 were probably immigrants.

And that's going to do it for me this week! Enjoy the week and until next week, may your lives be Happy…or Go Sucky!

I think your credibility gets completely shot when you metion Trevor Murdoch "had the pedigree" and that Dusty "probably knew Trevor since he was a child." Trevor is in no way related to either Dick Murdoch or Dusty Rhodes!

Posted By: Guest#0005 (Guest)  on July 08, 2008 at 11:17 PM

Good column, but I'm forced to ask if you read other columns and news bits on 411? D'Amore is focusing on his sports bar in Canada, and TNA has said that they will sign Moose upon her return. Again, though...good read as always.

Posted By: Steve307 (Guest)  on July 08, 2008 at 11:33 PM

Dude you know that Trevor isn't really related to Dick Murdoch right?

Posted By: Davis (Guest)  on July 08, 2008 at 11:44 PM

Sullivan,
First off totally agree with you on Kane, I think when he's motivated hes a solid in ring worker and also very entertaining.
Second off, what do you think about this opinion of mine...Sit Batista and Punk down...have them watch eddie vs brock at No Way Out...tell them to have that type of match...Insulting Yes...Similiar matchup...yes?
Lastly, I love Shelton I'm taking the over and I truly would love to see him in a meaningful feud because he's got the talent...

Yes because immigrants know nothing of patriotism. Jackass.

Posted By: Guest#9996 (Guest)  on July 09, 2008 at 12:04 AM

Uh, how would Murdoch have the pedigree to make it in the business, and how would Dusty have known him since he was a kid?

LMAO @ the immigrants joke

Your comments on Trevor Murdoch seem to indicate that you fell for his implied heritage as much as I did. Despite using the name Murdoch, claiming Waxahachie, TX as his hometown, and being a spitting image of the man, Bill "Trevor Murdoch" Mueller is in no way related to Dick Murdoch.

Also, the news item announcing D'Amore's departure indicated that he was doing so to devote more time to his sports bar back home in Canada.

I hope Benjamin's push work, but like someone on this site said, Benjamin's move set is good for a face.

Also note WWE wants a face black guy and Kofi can't be the only one.

I've said this once I'll say it again, Benjamin can do some good high flying moves. If it worked for Jeff Hardy it can work for Benjamin and if they are worried about his mic skills well Elijah Burke ain't doing shit so use him. WWE can make Benjamin work if they don't do stupid shit like his losing streak that lead to his momma. I say all this because ever since the WGTT broke up in 2004 I wanted to see Benjamin a star and while it looked like it from 04-mid 05 it hasn't come true. I'm a HUGE Benjamin mark and would love to see him as US champ of getting pops when he comes out.

How exactly did CM Punk not win his own fight when he beat JBL on RAW? Neither John Cena nor Cryme Time laid a hand on JBL, they didn't even enter the ring. It's not like he had a dozen run ins and a GM watching his back like Edge.

Posted By: Craig (Guest)  on July 09, 2008 at 01:07 AM

Aw crap, that means I'm an immigrant.

Posted By: Steven Q. Urkel (Guest)  on July 09, 2008 at 01:07 AM

Trevor Murdoch's Pedigree:

1) He was trained by Harley Race
2) Some would consider him one of race's top charges
3) Race, Rhodes, Hayes and others are all in that NWA fraternity of legends, so Race really putting Murdoch over to them, is a realistic possibility
4) Trevor's style is so old school that it's not hard to see why Rhodes and Hayes would've liked him around.

What other pedigree do you need?

"That 1.6 were probably immigrants." What is that supposed to mean? Totally immature and distasteful. Think before you write.

Posted By: Taker904 (Guest)  on July 09, 2008 at 02:23 AM

Matt & Jeff Hardy were painful on the mic when the WWE decided to push them as singles - it took jeff a trip over to tna and back again before he finally learnt how to talk on the mic and matt was the new lance storm with his boring monotone voice until the edge/lita/matt era.

The post about the Spanish dictator just decimated every other comment here.

Posted By: Guest#4478 (Guest)  on July 09, 2008 at 03:26 AM

What he probably means is that immigrants aren't patriotic. Why would they be watching Smackdown rather than celebrating the 4th of July?

Whether I agree with it or not, that doesn't matter

Posted By: Talon (Guest)  on July 09, 2008 at 03:33 AM

I really think you are overplaying how hard it is to have a successful singles career after being a tag champion.

Super human charisma and talent? You're going overboard.

To the last Jackass who posted a comment, Batista is no Lesner? Dude you read too much, get off the computer think for yourself, don't be a sheep. And not to disrespect the dead, but dude, nevermind... And the immigrant comment was funny, don't worry about the uber sensitive crowd they will mend.

Posted By: Chic (Guest)  on July 09, 2008 at 11:44 AM

I think that you have gotten your facts mixed up. According to the news report on 411, the move of Shelton Benjamin to Smackdown was a surprise to most because Michael Hayes is NOT high on him. He feels that he is un-motivated and has not seized opportunities put forth for him, his constant inability to cut a decent promo, and the fact that he blows spots left and right. Don't get wrong, I like Benjamin and think with a little critiquing and handling, he could become someone. However, Hayes' assessment of him is 100% correct.

Posted By: P.S. Hayes (Guest)  on July 09, 2008 at 11:50 AM

Wow, the immigrant joke wasn't very amusing, but it was hardly offensive. Some of you losers are trying too hard to find something to be outraged over. The Trevor Murdoch thing is too bad, I wouldn't have minded him sticking around, especially if it was sans the singing gimmick.

Posted By: Encito (Guest)  on July 09, 2008 at 12:46 PM

You don't have to be related to someone to know them since they were a child. Steve Sullivan didn't say or imply Trevor Murdoch is related to Dick Murdock or Dusty Rhodes.

Posted By: Chico (Guest)  on July 09, 2008 at 01:31 PM

If Trevor Murdoch was fired because he doesn't have charisma to be a singles wrrestler, why is Lance Cade still employed? What has he done to show charisma? He sucker punched Trevor Murdoch, got off the 'roids, grew a goatee, shaved his hair, and now follows Chris Jericho around like a puppy dog. Is that supposed to be charismatic?

Posted By: Chico (Guest)  on July 09, 2008 at 01:48 PM

So many fans look at masked Kane through rose-colored shades. That was the same guy who jobbed to X-Pac and fell for Tori. That was the same guy who did Hulk Hogan impersonations and gave shout-outs to his "Kane-anites." Masked Kane wasn't always the guy who literally set the world on fire. He spent a lot of time as an idiotic face, posing goof, patriotic beast (remember that Unamericans feud?) or an attempt at a sympathetic monster.

Putting the mask back on won't undo any of that, or turn him back into the guy he was when he debuted (before his one-day title reign and jobs to Undertaker).

You don't exactly need super human charisma to move from being a great tag team wrestler to singles superstar, just look at Bret Hart. Great talent, zero charisma. Though I do see what you were getting at Steve. You could've done an entire column dedicated to those tag team wrestlers who became major single stars. Time will tell if Lance Cade will take that next step.

Immigrant Joke = EPIC WIN!!!!

its not sheltons fault that they brought him in with charlie haas (the most boring wrestler of all time) and made him a part of team angle. Except for his mama's angle, he has never had a gimmick. Hook him up with that chick maryse and he will finally get some heat. I love the gold hair, and it gives him a different edge. He is way too good of a talent to have been wasted this long. Plus, since the wellness policy got put in, he is one of very few guys to have not gotten any smaller, in comparison he looks huge.

Kane's gonna KILL YOU!

Posted By: Q (Guest)  on July 09, 2008 at 04:33 PM

CM Punk can work his ars off! He's a bit of a throwback and if booked right as a babyface Champion underdog, he will generate a lot of interest and he hits the WWE demographic head on. This kid is the real deal. If they would give Brian Danielson a chance to come in as a heel even though he is small he has such good psychology in the ring size will be overlooked. I think the biggest problem is that Triple H and Shaunboy still see themselves as the measuring stick in the company. Fact is Levesque is "OLD" now and brittle and can't be counted on to work a full year anymore. Shaun is just a jerk who will hold someone down if he can as long as he has someones ear he's really a detriment to the business for all his amazing in ring talent. Too bad
he isn't more Like Jericho and just go with the flow. If they screw with Jericho he'll just retire again and keep his dignity or go TNA this time. I think they should get another Midget for the Green Little guy to work with as that would be fun for fans and kids alike and broaden the appeal for kids. Midgets are cool!! TNA has better wrestling Chicks so WWE better get training some of their
hollywood wannabe babes who love to be on TV! Too bad they all get hurt cause they can't work at all. What ever happened to the days when people wondered if it was a work and the boys rarely got hurt. Now the business is fully exposed and the wrestlers are huge marks and hurt all the time...Go Figure.

This was met a a joke due to the low rating. As I child of immigrants I wasn't insulted and found it funny. like why are these people watching tv when they should be celebrating or something like that.

"why is Lance Cade still employed? What has he done to show charisma?"

Uh, maybe because he was trained by Shawn Michaels and hence he's involved in the Michaels/Jericho fued now...btw, if Kane is the one revealed to be the one in the Vince storyline, then I could see where they have Vince goto 'Taker for help against crazy Kane...

I totally disagree with everyones take on CM Punk as champion.....so far it looks as though he isnt a fighting champion but a underdog champion who gets his wins off the shoulders of others....i personally think they should have left the title on smackdown and possibly unify the titles....meanwhile build the rep of the IC title.....and instead of CMP as world champion have him win the IC championship instead....and when Edge would have shown up on RAW punk would explain that the World championship contenders are nothing but drama queens and cry babies and challenge Edge a the next major PPV....putting eachothers title on the line.....that would give Edge the insentive to take yet another title from the "Flagship show" and have built up hype for the PPV....Then CM Punk could win the title and at the same time look like a presentable champion....but i dont work for creative and what i said didnt matter so yea....all well

Chico,

The obvious implication is that Steve was making the case that Trevor Murdoch was in some way related to either Dick Murdoch or Dusty Rhodes. If that's not true and Steve was simply implying that Dusty knew Trevor in some way since he was a child than Steve needs to be a better journalist and cite his sources. No other wrestling website, television program or magazine has ever claimed Trevor was related to either Dusty or Dick. So either Steve is privy to information previoulsy unreported, is making his information up or is just not informed about Trevor's true background. However you see it, its poor journalism.

the kane thing seemed a lil odd for me but it got me thinking...what if they bring back paul bearer...i mean when undertaker came back as the dead man, thats who was along side him. he was in a glass box and was filled with concrete on SMACKDOWN where michael cole was....thats why i think kane went after him, he was there

Kennedy was supposed to be Vincies son, watta a push. Look how Hornswoggle ended up. Somehow they made Finlay the father. That was a really gay storyline. No pushes, heel turns, just finaly face turn.
