The Top Ten 7.29.08: Wrestling DVDs
Posted by Julian Williams on 07.29.2008
The DVD's that were so good, it made you not give up on wrestling for one more week. Ahh, who am I kidding, you weren't going anywhere. What else would you do with your life silly?
Good day people and welcome back to another fantastical edition of The Top Ten. This week we're going to look at The Top Ten Wrestling DVD's. That doesn't include DVD's for individual shows, but rather specific DVD sets. And I'm only talking about DVD's not VHS because, let's face it, VHS tapes could hold 2 or 3 hours of material tops while most DVD sets nowadays have easily 6 or more hours of content. And most of the VHS wrestling tapes I've seen couldn't touch the jock strap of most DVD sets. So before you email me talking about why did I not include one of the old ECW collections or the Best of SD Jones, that's why. Ok, onto the column.
Random Thoughts Of A Disturbed Wrestling Fan
-So a lot of people have been bitching and how CM Punk has basically been a punk (see what I did there) since winning the World Heavyweight Title and I actually have to agree with the bitchers and moaners this time around. But what I'm hoping for is that this is a foreshadowing of either one of two things. Either Punk gets fed up of everyone treating him like a chump and he goes full blown heel to get some respect or he becomes the plucky underdog ala Bret Hart that everyone underestimates but yet always finds a way to retain the title. I think either scenario would be good, I just hope that they don't "Rey Mysterio" Punk's title reign and actually make him look like a competent champion before he loses the belt.
-Many people have been saying how the new Diva's Title is the ugliest belt ever in pro wrestling, while others have said fuck no, the Spinner Belt is. The truth is that both sides are wrong. The Divas belt is pretty ugly….if you're a dude. The belt was made to attract women by being pretty and girly and the chicks I know seem to like the new Divas Title. Which is good for the WWE because then some of those chicks will fork over money to get a replica of it. And the Spinner Belt is not nearly as bad as people made it out to be. When it was created, the spinner thing was really popular so WWE was actually being modern (for once) by creating a belt that young people would like. I will admit that the belt should have been a Cena special, just like the Smoking Skull belt was only for Stone Cold. But it definitely wasn't the ugliest belt. The ugliest belt ever? That god-awful NWA World Title that TNA was using up to last year. That thing looks less like a World Championship and more like an alien sex toy.
-I recently purchased an HDTV after one of my tube TV's bit the dust and all I have to say about HD is: BELIEVE THE HYPE! I was always one of those people that thought that HDTV's were overhyped and they didn't really make a big difference, but let me tell you, once you watch something on an HDTV, you don't want to watch a regular TV. Me and my girl still have a Tube TV in our bedroom and ever since we've got this HDTV a week ago, we've watched the TV in the bedroom maybe once or twice. After being able to count how many grey hairs are growing on Chris Jericho's chin, I just don't want to go back to regular TV ever again.
-I can't decide who's hotter, the chick from the "Dangerous" video or the chick from the "Flashing Lights" video. You decide:
Dangerous Chick
Flashing Lights Chick
-Greatest Ric Flair Quote of all-time? "You can ask all the girls! When you go to bed with the big boys, you're gonna feel some pain in the morning! WOOOOO!"
The Top Ten Wrestling DVD's
Honorable Mention: The Rock: The Most Electrifying Man In Sports Entertainment
This is a DVD set that many Rock fans have been waiting on for years and it certainly didn't disappoint. This set has pretty much every important match in Rocky's career including his IC Title victory over HHH, his brutal matches against Mankind, his classic matches with Stone Cold, his intense feud with Triple H and great matches against such superstars like Chris Jericho, Booker T, Kurt Angle, Kane, Eddie Guerrero and of course Hollywood Hulk Hogan. In addition, you had some of The Rock's greatest promos and that adds up into one hell of a DVD set.
Honorable Mention: The History Of The WWE Championship
With such rare matches as Morales/Koloff and Sammartino/Kowalski as well as all-time classics like Hogan/Andre, HBK/Hart, HHH/Cactus, and Benoit/Angle, this DVD set is easily a winner. On top of all those great matches, you also have the great Hart/Hart Cage Match, Hogan/Warrior, Hogan/Savage, Rock/Brock, Rock/Austin, and about a half a dozen more fantastic matches. On top of that, there is a cool little feature that showcases every WWE Title change to happen in WWE History. This is the definitive collection to own if you're a new fan as it features pretty much every important WWE Title match in the company's history.
Honorable Mention: Rey Mysterio - The Biggest Little Man
I think this is a very underrated DVD set as many people usually rave about other DVD's, but I rarely hear anyone talk about this one. And that's a shame because this is one of the most consistently entertaining DVD that I've ever watched. It features some of Rey's rare matches against the likes of Super Calo, Jushin Lyger, and Blitzkreig as well as his classic matches against Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko, and Kurt Angle. I can honestly say that there are no dogs on this DVD set as every match is at least mildly entertaining. If you are a fan of Rey, past or present, than there is no excuse not to own this.
Honorable Mention: The Best Of Raw – Vol. 1 & 2
No, this isn't the 15th Anniversary set that was recently released (although that one was pretty good), but rather a 2-disc set that was released in 2001 and featured action from RAW between late 1997 to late 1999. This set featured all the pivotal moments of the attitude era including The Beer Truck Incident, Austin stunning Vince for the first time, The Rock throwing Austin off a bridge, Mankind winning the WWE Title, Zamboni 3:16, DX invading WCW, Sable and her painted tits, DX mocking The Nation, and the debut of Y2J. On top of that, it also contains rare Raw matches like Rock vs. X-Pac, Mankind vs. Undertaker, HHH vs. Rock (I Quit), and Edge & Christian vs. The Hardyz (T.I.T. Tournament). This was my first wrestling DVD and I watched it so many times, that I have it pretty much memorized. Because of this, I may be a bit bias towards this set, but all-in-all it is a very entertaining DVD.
Honorable Mention: Unstoppable – The Best Of Samoa Joe
Well let's see. Joe/Sabin, Joe/Dutt, Joe/Delirious, Joe/Styles, Joe/Styles/Daniels, Joe/Liger, and Joe/Daniels. Yea, this set is awesome. It features 11 matches and more than half of them are over 4 stars. No more words for this, it is awesome, you must own. Next!
Honorable Mention: ROH Presents Bloodstained Honor
I was hyped for this DVD set once I saw the match listing and it certainly did not disappoint. I had seen a few of the matches on the set, but the rest I hadn't but had heard great things of. Out of the 8 matches on this set, only one of them (in my opinion) is under 4 stars. That is unbelievable. I cant wait to pick up future ROH releases to see if they can match the quality set by this fantastic compilation.
10) Foley Greatest Hits & Misses: The Hardcore Edition
I love this DVD set because it features Foley presenting some of his best….and worst matches. It's pretty funny to see Mick ragging on himself and even the bad matches were fun to watch in a trainwreck sort of way. But there are a lot of good matches and they certainly deliver to make this one of the better DVD sets I've ever seen. Matches like Jack/Vader, Jack/Whipwreck, Jack/Sting, Love/Austin, Mankind/Rock, Mankind/HBK, Foley/Funk, Mankind/Undertaker, Jack/HHH, Jack/Orton, Foley/Edge and Foley/Flair make the match quality on this set unbelievable. On top of that, you had some additional great matches like Jack & Maxx Payne vs. Nasty Boys, Jack & Raven vs. Funk & Dreamer, Foley & Edge vs. Dreamer and Funk & Jack vs. Chris Candido. If that weren't enough, you also have some of the greatest promos ever in the biz as Foley's Anti-Hardcore promos from ECW are shown in their entirety. Damn, fuck this column, I'm going to watch this set again now.
9) Phenomenal: The Best Of AJ Styles Vol. 1
This was (I believe) TNA's first DVD offering and they couldn't have started off with a better subject than AJ Styles. This was a great set that featured such fantastic matches like the Double Elimination match to crown the first X-Division champ, a couple of the Styles/Lynn/Lo-Ki classics, a fun ladder match between AJ and D-Lo Brown, and other great matches against the likes of Abyss, Amazing Red, Syxx-Pac and Jeff Jarrett. This was just a wonderful package from start to finish and one that I still get great enjoyment from watching even to this day.
8) The Shawn Michaels Story: Heartbreak & Triumph
HBK had a previous DVD released on him (From The Vault) in 2003 which was great in its own right, but many fans wanted to see a complete story on HBK. Their wishes were granted when this set was released last year. The biography given on HBK's life was fantastic as it blended early childhood stories of Shawn with stories that we've heard a million times as well as stories that we never knew about, including his bouts with drug addiction. This set also featured some great matches like The Rockers vs. Buddy Rose & Doug Somers, The Rockers vs. The Brainbusters, The Rockers vs. The Orient Express, HBK vs. The British Bulldog, HBK vs. Jeff Jarrett, HBK vs. HHH, HBK vs. Kurt Angle and HBK vs. John Cena. This is just a phenomenal set that is the type of DVD presentation that HBK deserves.
7) The Ladder Match
Do I really need to explain myself? Ok, fine. Michaels/Ramon, HHH/Rock, Hardyz/Edge & Christian/Dudleyz, Benoit/Jericho, Guerrero/Van Dam, Guerrero/Mysterio, Edge/Hardy, Edge/Flair, Edge/Cena, MITB 1, and Hardy/Nitro (or Morrison if you prefer). In addition to that you have underrated matches like Hart/Michaels, Edge/Christian, Jericho/Christian and London & Kendrick/Hardys/MNM/Regal & Taylor. It's rare that there is a set with no bad matches, but this is definitely one of them.
6) Cheating Death, Stealing Life: The Eddie Guerrero Story
This was perhaps the most uplifting, and heartbreaking, wrestling DVD to ever be released. Uplifting because of all the trials and tribulations that Eddie had to overcome to achieve his dream of becoming a World Champion. Heartbreaking because although Eddie overcame his demons, they eventually caught up to him and ended his life far too early. Eddie talks candidly in the biography section about his past addictions and how he nearly wasn't able to overcome them. One of those seemingly uncensored moments come when Eddie is told for the first time that Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko and Perry Saturn went behind his back to tell Jim Ross about Eddie's addiction. It's obvious that Eddie feels a little betrayed, but I think that he even realized that was what probably saved his life at the time. To add to the great biography section (probably the best of a single wrestler on any WWE DVD), there are some great matches included such as Eddie & Art Barr vs. El Hijo Del Santo and Octagon, Eddie vs. Dean Malenko, Eddie vs. Rey Mysterio, Eddie vs. Chris Jericho, Eddie vs. Chris Benoit and of course Eddie vs. Brock Lesnar. This is a fantastic set that is kind of heartbreaking to watch nowadays, but still terrific nonetheless.
5) The Legacy Of Stone Cold Steve Austin
Stone Cold has had a bunch of DVD sets released for him, but none have been as definitive as this set. From his early days in WCW to his brief stint in ECW to his mega success in the WWE, this covers Austin's career pretty nicely. The set features such great matches like Austin/Steamboat, Austin/Vega, Austin/Taker, Austin/Hart, Austin/Rock, and Austin/HHH. This is one of those sets where it seems like its going to take forever to finish watching, but it is so entertaining that it doesn't feel tedious at all.
4) Hard Knocks: The Chris Benoit Story
Well this certainly is a heartbreaking inclusion on this list. This DVD set featured a great biography on how Benoit toiled for years in the lower card into becoming one of the most respected workers in the biz to being a World Champion. The matches included were tremendous and included rare Japanese matches against the likes of The Great Sasuke, Jushin Liger and Black Tiger (aka Eddie Guerrero). It featured some of his memorable WCW matches against Kevin Sullivan, Eddie Guerrero, 2 Cold Scorpio, Booker T, Bret Hart as well as his classic bouts against WWE stars like William Regal, Kurt Angle, Triple H, and Shawn Michaels. This was easily one of my favorite DVD sets ever and it saddens me that I'll probably never watch it again because I honestly don't think I'd be able to enjoy it.
3) The Ultimate Ric Flair Collection
This set is pure, unadulterated awesomeness. The only thing it was missing was a biography section and a couple more matches as that would have easily made this the greatest wrestling DVD of all-time. I think that if they would have combined this set with the newly released Definitive Collection, that there would never be a greater DVD set ever created. On its own, though, this collection is certainly not slacking. It features some of Flair's most classic matches against the likes of Harley Race, Dusty Rhodes, Barry Windham, Ricky Steamboat, Terry Funk, Sting, and Triple H. It also features his unforgettable 1992 Royal Rumble win as well s some legendary Flair promos. The Definitive Collection comes close, but in terms of overall quality, this is easily the superior Flair release.
2) Bret Hart: The Best There Is, The Best There Was & The Best There Ever Will Be
This DVD set features 18 matches and 13 of them are easily 4 stars or more. That is freakish. In terms of match quality, no other DVD set is even close to touching this one. The biography section is pretty damn good as well as Bret speaks openly about different topics including the Montreal Screwjob and the death of his brother, Owen. Some people love Bret, some people hate him, but I don't think anybody can deny that this set is absolutely phenomenal.
1) The Rise & Fall Of ECW
This DVD single handedly brought about the resurrection of ECW. That alone could explain its position at #1, but on top of that it was a FANTASTIC set. To my knowledge, this is still the highest grossing DVD (non-Wrestlemania) in WWE history and it was met with such an overwhelming response that the WWE wanted to cash in my creating the first One Night Stand. That event was so successful that they decided to bring ECW back full-time (granted, much more watered down) and the rest, as they say, is history. This is the only WWE DVD set to ever be rated TV-MA and it certainly deserves it as the curses fly all over the place in this set. The in-depth biography section covers pretty much every major event to ever happen in ECW from the early days as Eastern Championship Wrestling to Shane Douglas throwing down the title to the emergence of Raven to the Taz/Sabu feud to the rise of RVD to the death of the promotion. The extras feature such ECW classics like Raven & Stevie Richards vs. The Pitbulls, Too Cold Scorpio vs. Sabu and RVD vs. Jerry Lynn. The biography (which is easily the best I've ever seen) was honestly enough to make this number 1, but when you factor in the matches that are included, how could you choose anything else as number 1?
The Sign-Off
Yup, I'm done. But be sure to leave your feedback and come back next week when the topic will be The Top Ten Wrestlers EVER. Until then, go wash your ass!
The Four Horsemen: Brilliant look at the history of the group, classic moments and promos and great interviews, even with Paul Roma.
Loose Cannon: A surprisingly fair look at Brian Pillman's life, explaining the impact he had and how elaborate his con job was.
The Spectacular Legacy of the AWA: Wonderfully in depth on the organization and great to show that, while Vince's talent raids hurt, it was Gagne's refusal to flex with the times that killed him in the end.
Heroes of World Class: The WWE disc is good but this independent DVD is a more heartfelt version, a bit harder on Fritz but still containing classic moments and great interviews with those involved to paint the glory years of WCCW. The scene of Kevin going through the ruins of the Sportatorium is still moving.

Flashing Lights, hands down.
Good column
Posted By: Bobby (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 03:27 PM
Honorable Mention:
Shawn Michaels From the Vault
This DVD collection of seven matches started ALL of this. WWE tried to come out with a "Best Of" with Shawn Michaels to see how well it would do. To say that it did well was a HUGE understatement. WWE realized just how much money there was in old school.
Why do you think WWE 24/7 exists?
Posted By: Axle (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 03:33 PM
The Rise of Fall of ECW is not the most successful non-WrestleMania DVD. The 2005 Undertaker DVD sold more copies, and I think that was eventually topped, too.
As far as Punk goes, start bitching when he finally loses a match. Right now, he has won 4 times, hasn't lost, and had 2 no-contests on TV since winning the title.

wow this is the first time i have 0 complaints, really good list
Posted By: Ray A (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 03:41 PM
Just wanted to see if I could beat the grievance-pushers to the punch and say I agree with putting the Benoit-DVD up there.
Worst quote of the DVD: Mother Benoit asking where Chris will be, when he is 40...
Worst quote of the Eddie DVD: Malenko worrying about finding Eddie in a hotel-room some day

ric flair and the four horsemen is stright gold.
and the new ric flair dvd surpasses the earlier edition.

Dangerous Chick without a doubt

what about wccw that movie was killer. hogans was damn good too.
Posted By: tim (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 04:03 PM
Where's the Four Horsemen DVD? That was awesome.
Posted By: Guest#3268 (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 04:11 PM
"Heroes of World Class" is a glaring omission from your list. It may not have a bunch of bonus content, but the documentary itself is the best wrestling documentary ever produced.
Posted By: Joshtinpowers (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 04:11 PM
no self destruction of warrior dvd?
Posted By: Guest#8361 (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 04:13 PM
good stuff, i would give honorable mentions to :
tna- ultimate x
ecw: hardcore evolution
wwe: tombstone and the jake roberts dvd
plus the Heroes of World Class
Posted By: L I A M (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 04:17 PM
Heroes of World Class.
Posted By: The Fuj (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 04:18 PM
Solid list but where's THE SELF-DESTRUCTION OF THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR???
I think Jake Roberts: Pick Your Poison is worthy of an honorable mention.
Posted By: Doakes (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 04:20 PM
Great list. I'm personally stoked for the Hell in a Cell DVD set that is coming out soon. I think it will end up taking one of these top 10 spots.
Posted By: Mr. C. (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 04:21 PM
I own all of the top 10 except for the Styles DVD and I have to say I'm happy that you included the Benoit DVD as it was very good. Gotta wonder where the Hogan dvd is? Either one would be fine but surely one of them for honorable mention if nothing else? I personally think Bret Hart's is rated too high as I found it very dull at some points.
Others you could've given love to would have been the Road Warriors dvd, the 4 Horsemen dvd and the McMahon dvd.
Posted By: JP (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 04:24 PM
you should really check out Forever Hardcore too. it's kind of a non-WWe companion piece that must be seen with Rise & Fall. Hell I'll sell it to you. Hahahaha
Posted By: Jake Fury (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 04:25 PM
I have 5 out of the top 10 on the list and I think they are all great. Rise and Fall would always win on a list like this no contest. Only one I think is missing is the monday night wars. Sure its a little one sided but its a cool dvd to watch. They could have made this a 3 disk set and included a shit load of Extras thats my only gripe.
Posted By: Tony Dorian (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 04:26 PM
Good choice for #1 and a great list overall. I would have personally included either the "Monday Night Wars" or the "nWo: Back in black" DVD in the honorable mentions just for the simple fact that that era of wrestling was extremely popular and easily the best we have ever seen.
Posted By: Dustin James (Registered) on July 29, 2008 at 04:37 PM
That ECW Rise & Fall DVD made ECW what it is 2day.
Posted By: Conor O'Boyle (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 04:38 PM
No Raw 15th Anniversary? Really?
That DVD is filled with great matches
Posted By: Kevin (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 04:41 PM
Jullian qiute enjoy your list
I would add one major change move everything down a spot and place Heroes of World Class / Directors Cut Double DVD in the Top Spot arguably better than The Rise and Fall of ECW especially for Old School Fans of the 80s
give it a look and see if you haven't seen it yet Tremendous addition to any fans collection
question to other posters : has anyone here seen the Mid South Wrestling DVD 1 & 2 Giants,Heroes,Midgets & Villians....how were these ?
Posted By: Cincinnati Kid (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 04:42 PM
The Undertaker's Tombstone set was really good, as was the Monday Night Wars DVD as well.
Posted By: Guest#2552 (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 04:51 PM
Ok...I admit that I have one of the biggest wrestling tape collections you will ever see. Fine, say what you want about that. So to help you guys out...let me add what I find to be some really good DVD's that may not have been mentioned here. Now, bear in mind, I enjoy the biographies on DVD's more than just matches and angles. I enjoy hearing insider/backstage stories and the guys out of character, for the most part.
The John Cena 'My Life' DVD is awesome from start to finish. Not sure how much, if any, of the biography is bullshit, but theres alot of awesome stuff on here. 3 disks, and the '5 questions w/ Cena' disk 3 is pure gold. You may even start to like Cena after watching this, seriously. Its a great set.
HBK DVD is awesome. totally agree.
Both Flair DVD's are excellent. Im partial to the new one because of the more extensive bio. again, just my taste.
NOT a fan of the Stone Cold the Legacy DVD, even though Im a huge Austin fan. Not enough talking all around. Although there are a plenty of good matches on here. For my money, the old "Hell Yeah" DVD/VHS from 99-00. 'What?' which came out in 02, And the 'Stone Cold truth' which is loaded with great stuff, are much much better. I'd go with those if you can get them.
Just thought I'd throw this in there. Have fun.

The Jake Roberts one is mad underrated.
Posted By: Brett (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 05:03 PM
Not to pick nits but the AJ Styles DVD was NOT the first one released by TNA. The original versions of "Best of Bloodiest Brawls","Best of the X-Division" and a World Championship collection were released on DVD in 2003.
Posted By: Wesgr81 (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 05:04 PM
In regards to #9, it was the 5th DVD as Best of the NWA Title Matches, Best of the X-Division, Best of the Bloodiest Brawls, and the Ultimate X Collection came out before it.
Posted By: JP Nichols (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 05:20 PM
This is a good list. I did see the WCCW thing on pay per view. It's not a bad one either.
Posted By: the dude (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 05:25 PM
I'm surprised they haven't released an updated version of the Eddie Guerrero DVD to talk about his death and the tribute shows.
I love both of the Hulk Hogan DVD sets. Of course, I'm an Hogan fan.
Same goes with the Tombstone set.
I'm not a big fan of the WWE Championship DVD because alot of the matches don't feature a title change.
The Monday Night Wars dvd is pretty good.
Even though it's totally biased, the Self-Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior dvd is great to watch.
Posted By: JLAJRC (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 05:35 PM
Honorable mention: WrestleMania XX and the disc version of WrestleMania 2000/16.
Posted By: guy incognito (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 05:47 PM
"-I can't decide who's hotter, the chick from the "Dangerous" video or the chick from the "Flashing Lights" video. You decide:"
Flashing Lights.
Better face, better tits, better ass - and better dressed. No Contest.
Posted By: Sarcastro (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 06:10 PM
Good top five, the ecw documentry is the best i have seen from the wwe, as far as match quality goes, Brets is my favourite.
Posted By: jbardo (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 06:16 PM
No Horsemen in the list is disappointing, if only for Flair's road stories!
But totally agree with ECDubbya in at No.1
Posted By: Ricky Morton (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 06:31 PM
i liked the rock. but his dvd isnt top ten material. the whole biograghy was done in kayfabe, and there was no dwayne johnson interview.
Posted By: rey (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 06:49 PM
Where the hell is The Monday Night Wars?
Posted By: natedoggcata (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 07:06 PM
For me Brian Pillman was the best DVD ever produced... I was always a mild fan of his before watching it but became a huge mark after this. Without doubt the most interesting documentary section looking at how Pillman evolved from cookie cutter babyface to twisted unpredictable innovative character... Plus the match list is awesome including Wargames, Liger matches and Hollywood Blonde material.
Posted By: Andrew Barbarash (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 07:06 PM
Overall a good column. I am not a big fan of the format of The Rock's, Triple-H's, or Stone Cold's dvds though, the whole story, match, story, match deal. I prefer the biographical like Flair's definitive collection or Shawn Michaels Heartbreak and Triumph
Posted By: Supermannsc (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 08:06 PM
wasnt the original DX dvd rated MA?
Posted By: e (Guest) on July 29, 2008 at 08:22 PM

Great list but i feel a few more DVDs deserve mentioning
TNA Best of X Divison (2003)
TNA Best of Championship Matches (2003)
TNA Best of Ultimate X (2003)
Undertaker: Tombstone
Four Horsemen
Monday Night Wars
RVD- One of a Kind
Raw 15th Anniversary
And what about the Beyond the Mat Documentrary? Does that count for this list as well?
Posted By: Guest#2275 (Guest) on July 30, 2008 at 12:25 AM
Most of my selections have already been mentioned, but i'll say a little bit about them anyway:
Brian Pillman - Loose Cannon - this is such a phenomenal DVD, i'd have it in my top 5. A captivating story, and some tremendous matches.
TNA - best of X division - I enjoyed TNA before this DVD. This DVD made me love TNA (for a time anyway...) In terms of match quality, I doubt there's been many better.
RVD - One of a Kind - again, for pure match quality, this one is fantastic. It's full of hard (impossible) to find matches, and is a fantastic DVD to refute the haters who claim that RVD was a one dimensional spot monkey. (of course, that's exactly what he was in his later career)
Jake "the snake" Roberts - I loved Jake growing up. Watching the matches, I'm not sure that his matches hold up all that well today. But the documentary portion is captivating.
and Monday Night Wars is unlucky to miss out as well.
a word on Four Horseman - it doesn't deserve to be on this list. I was so disappointed with some of the match selections, and Arn Anderson drives me crazy talking in a bizarre half-kayfabe manner.

No question the chick from Flashing Lights..BOD-DEE. However what's up with that video, garbage!
Posted By: Peezy (Guest) on July 30, 2008 at 08:20 AM
Question to everyone commenting, and to you Julian. Do you prefer the old style form of WWE DVD (like most on your list, with matches and the biography program separate) or the new style, like the Stone Cold one, where they put the matches into the bio program, and the bio stretches across several discs? Personally, I like the old way better. I find that full matches in the main program take me out of the story that's being told. Don't get me wrong, I want all the matches in the set, but I find they're distracting when they're a part of the bio. Thoughts?
Posted By: Hawkeye (Guest) on July 30, 2008 at 08:37 AM
The flashing lights chick is way hotter. And again, Julian, get a new gimmick. Your lists suck. They are boring.

Cenas Word DVD....Anybody....No?

Hawkeye:
I MUCH prefer the old method. Rock, Austin, Triple H, Mysterio & Cena's dvd don't even have biography sections. Sure a little info between matches but hardly biography worthy. The new HBK and Flair dvds are excellent and seperate the two, as will the new Mr. Perfect set, so the "art" isn't gone just yet.

The Dangerous girl is hotter because you feel like you can get her. i mean she must not have high standards if shes attracted to Kardinal. He's fugly

Good list here, i'd probably have the Ladder Match DVD higher but not by much.

Are those the top 10 because you say so or is it done by an actual expert?

OF COURSE the damn Chris Benoit DVD is on there. Gotta keep up this weird IWC love affair with the man that murdered his family, I guess. Or was it just to spark some debate in the comments section? Ah, I see what you did there.
Monday Night War, Ric Flair & The 4 Horsemen, and Raw 15th Anniversary should be on the main list in place of Benoit, Austin, and the 1st Flair set.

Benoit's DVD made the list because regardless what he did, he still made a huge fucking contribution to the wrestling business regardless of what some people say. You cannot ignore what he did in the business, he had one of the greatest Wrestlemania main events ever when he won the world title, that isn't wiped from the history books as much as you want to believe WWE's stance on it, that being if they ignore it, it didn't happen, the fact is, it did happen.

The Rock DVD is worthless with no "Rock concert". Jake and Pillman are top ten, Jakes is top 3.

Some more honorable mentions
Recently bought PWG Sells Out great best of 3 Disc Set, that introduces the company and filled with great matches.
THe Loose Cannon DVD is great as well though it should have been uncensored.
Heroes of World Class is a great documentary on WCCW light on the extras though, the WWE's DVD is more of a companion piece.

The Rise & Fall of ECW disc is by a country mile, THE BEST DVD that WWE has released. So bloody damn awesome.
My honourable mention would go to The Roddy Piper DVD Set mainly for the Valentine dog collar match. But without doubt because of the Piper’s Pits on DVD 3.
I did like the nWo DVD but the documentary let it down as the 85 min running time was 40 mins for the WCW period than another 40 odd mins for the two months they had been in the WWF/E.

Heroes of World Class: greatest wrestling doc ever, and one of the greatest DVDs ever. I dare you not to get choked up when Kevin Von Erich takes his last tour of the Sportatorium.

This is what I have from the list.
Bret Hart
Chris Benoit
Ladder Match
ECW
Mick Foley (original version). I have the new matches elsewhere.
Samoa Joe
Ric Flair-Both DVDS. I just got his second one. Jullian, that DVD should have received an honorable mention. But If you don't have it yet that's fine.
Rey Mysterio
Shawn Michaels-Both DVDS
WWE Championship
Stone Cold

Hotter girl in Dangerous, better rapping in Flashing Lights.
Good job on having the guts to put Benoit on there, and so high.

The Horsemen DVD should be in here certainly.

This is a very good list- quite an accomplishment for lists of this sort. Usually there is a slew of complaints.
I see why people are mentioning the Horsemen DVD, but honestly I own it and never watched it even a 3rd time.
Personally I feel that the WWE Superstars of the 80's deserves mention if for nothing other than the matches- the bio section was pretty shallow. I'd like to hear more about the Definitive Ric Flair Collection and whether or not is worthwhile.

I also own the Rock's set. Forgot to put it on my list.

so how come Lita:It just feels right isnt on the list?
i recently got bloodstained honor, and i'd like to know, which match do you say is under 4 stars?

After reading this column, I sat down today and watched Rise and Fall of ECW for the first time in about a year.
Having watched it, I can no longer agree that it's the best DVD that WWE has released. In the year that I've haven't watched this DVD, i've watched Jeremy Borash's Forever Hardcore a few times - and it's such a superior chronicle of ECW that I feel ridiculous in initially agreeing with this column.
Watching Rise and Fall kind of pisses me off now, because Heyman is so full of shit it's ridiculous. Their coverage of the Mass Transit incident, of 'the mole' and of the death of ECW is streets ahead of the WWE version
Of course, the WWE version delivered matches that the unofficial version could not - but in my opinion it doesn't make up for it. There was too much stuff 'conveniently left out' of the WWE version for it to be the best DVD.
My new picks are the ladder match dvd, bret hart, eddie guerrero and the first ric flair dvd.

ok list but there are a few problems. how the heck is the 4 horsemen not even an honorable mention. i also think the ladder match dvd was a little to high on the list. you said there wasn't a single bad match on it. did you even watch the crapfest that was the jake roberts vs big daddy ritter. In my opinion brett's dvd deserves the top spot. he could put on a 3 star match minimum with virtually anybody even the piece of lard that yokozuna.
