Column of Honor 08.16.08: Exhilaration
Posted by Ari Berenstein on 08.16.2008

Unfortunately right now I'm writing this column on a back up computer because my newer one went to pieces after the awesomely uncool thunderstorms and nor'easter hit NYC this week. I have to take it in to be checked but the motherboard is likely fried and I'm just hoping my hard drive is salvageable. Worse is that this computer is outdated and slow as a turtle stuck in molasses.

Regardless, Welcome to the Column.

Matches

Preshow

-Shane Hollister & Mitch Franklin defeated Ninja Blue & Ninja Yellow via pinfall with a roaring punch from Franklin.
-Johnny Gargano defeated Sami Callihan via pinfall with The Stroke
-Alex "Sugarfoot" Payne & Lou Crank (what a name) defeat Midwest Air & Ground of Benjamin Sailor & Nate Bash (ditto) via pinfall following a hurricanran from Payne.

Main Show

-Kevin Steen defeated Jigsaw via pinfall following a Swanton to Jigsaw's back.
-Delirious defeated Rhett Titus via referee stoppage after multiple Panic Attacks.
-"American Dragon" Bryan Danielson defeated Kenny King via submission with a standing twisting armbar (painful looking).
-Sara Del Rey defeated Sassy Stephie via pinfall with a standing axe kick in a quick match.
-Adam Pearce defeated Ruckus via pinfall following a half nelson suplex following Sweet & Sour Incorporated interference.
-Austin Aries defeated Tyler Black via submission with the Last Chancery in an "Age of the Fall Rules" match, which is a scientific wrestling match.
-Jay & Mark Briscoe defeated Jimmy Jacobs & Delirious via pinfall with the springboard Doomsday Device.
-FIP World Champion Erick Stevens retained his title by defeating Claudio Castagnoli via disqualification due to Claudio not breaking after the ref's count when kneeing him repeatedly in the turnbuckle.
-Chris Hero & Go Shiozaki defeated Roderick Strong & Brent Albright via pinfal after Hero's knock out elbow to Strong.
-ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness retained his title by defeating El Generico via submission with the London Dungeon. Said to be a fantastic MOTYC.

Angles & Issues

-He Learned What Jimmy Knew: Delirious has joined with The Age of the Fall following the heartache he felt from rejection by Daizee Haze and being shown the cell phone video by Rhett Titus. Delriious went berserk on Titus and bloodied him up badly during this one, using the blood to paint the mask. Jacobs and Allison Wonderland made their presence known during the match and were shouting out encouragements to Delirious, stating he belonged with them. After all, love doesn't save. Jacobs later announced that Delirious was the newest member of Age of the Fall member. Allison hugs Delirious and holds him like a Mother holding her child. Daizee comes out to try and talk Delirious out of it, but he ignores her and leaves with Jacobs.

-15 Minutes of Fame: The Danielson-King match ran close to the fifteen minute time limit, meaning the story of the match was King giving Danielson a run for his money. According to the report about the show, "Danielson came out sporting a mad farmer's tan. He got a "Tan of the Year!" chant." Well.

-Who Rules?¨Tyler Black announced before the match against Aries the match was under "Age of the Fall rules". This meant no brawling or fighting in the crowd, just straight scientific wrestling.

-Dragon Flies In: After the DQ was called in the Castagnoli-Stevens match, the refree tried to stop Claudio's attack but was chased off by Claudio with a chair. Danielson then came out for the save and to fight Claudio, who ran off.

-No return date to Cleveland has been formally announced although they may run again next year.

ROH News
(via the ROHnewswire… and other sources when attributed)

Via Observer: Flair, New York Attendance, AAA Trying to Book ROH Wrestlers

The following pieces of information come from this week'sWrestling Observer:

There were talks with Ric Flair's people about him coming in for a big show to make an appearance, but the price wasn't feasible. Flair has both an appearance fee for coming in and doing autographs, and a separate price for coming in the ring and cutting a promo.

Ric Flair needs to make as much money as possible right now in order to offset his decision to leave WWE. I don't begrudge him any means of him doing business, including charging separate prices for different functions in making special appearances. Obviously Ring of Honor doesn't have a lot of money to throw around and would like to get the most bang for their buck. That creates an impasse in this situation that would have to be haggled over but likely not easily resolved. While I‘m sure Flair in an ROH ring or on an ROH show would have been quite the awesome moment, its not particularly necessary at this point in time and I would rather see ROH save their money for later investments or put it to better use (such as production and presentation) rather than use it here for what would likely be a one time deal and a short term bump in attention. Sure the extra DVD sales of a Flair appearance wouldn't have hurt, but I don't know how much it would have helped in the long run either. Still, there's the chance we could see this down the line if both sides make a good deal, but with Flair entertaining thousands of offers right now, its hard to see it happening any time soon.

Last week's shows saw the 8/1 show in Manassas, VA draw a sellout of more than 500 fans. The 8/2 show at the Hammerstein Ballroom drew about 1,850, down a few hundred from the first show, but still one of the biggest crowds in company history.
ROH being down 350 fans in New York City isn't the best thing in the world, but as noted by Dave Meltzer, it does still remain one of their larger crowds. If ROH can continue the trend of near 2,000 in attendance they should still be very comfortable in their position running the Hammerstein Ballroom. I'm shocked though that the Ring of Honor brand name as a whole likely drew more than the special appearance of the Motor City Machine Guns in New York City. Both shows had talent from NOAH and both shows had Nigel McGuinness and Bryan Danielson in key positions.

While Gabe Sapolsky hasn't been contacted, they are looking at trying to get several wrestlers from ROH for [AAA's] Verano de Escandalo.

Reading about the Lucha news through Meltzer and other sources I've come to understand these sorts of newsbits as the kind that you just wait and see until it actually comes to pass. It would be terrific for the ROH talent to obtain extra bookings in Mexico (we've already see Danielson and Jack Evans do this to some measure of success) and increase their exposure through those promotions. I'm just not holding my breath on it.

Lynn Returns For Glory

Via the ROH Newswire: Jerry Lynn will make his return to ROH on 9/19 in Boston and 9/20 in Philadelphia. Is Lynn here to stay?

Well, Meltzer reported in the Observer that Lynn's run (and I quote) "will begin" in September…so I can only assume that means that Lynn is going to be at least a semi-regular in the coming months. I'm glad for that because Lynn has a ton to offer in the ring and of course being a veteran in the ring has a ton to offer to the wrestlers as far as learning and improving in their profession. Lance Storm is an avid supporter of the product and it is great that he offers his advice to the wrestlers, but I don't think he'll be at the shows on an every show basis just because he has his own businesses to run such as the Lance Storm Wrestling Academy. If Lynn is booked on a regular or semi-regular basis, he becomes that veteran presence that is in the back and can help the wrestlers to improve from show to show.

There are a ton of fresh matches for Lynn as well, from Danielson to Delirious or Erick Stevens right on down to younger wrestlers like Pelle Primeau and Rhett Titus.

King Stays on the Throne

Kenny King is in ROH to stay. ROH officials highly anticipate what this charismatic athlete brings to the roster. You see stars born in ROH and Kenny King is the next name to remember. King will be tested right off the bat. This Friday in Cleveland will see him wrestle Bryan Danielson. Chicago will have King vs. Kevin Steen. It doesn't get any tougher than that for a first weekend. How will King do?

Well, on the one hand, I don't like that ROH went ahead and announced the longer term plans for King in ROH before he had his so called "try out" matches this weekend. ROH has jumped the gun on smaller storylines like this before and it irks me every time they do so. There's no reason this couldn't have waited until after King's matches this weekend against Danielson and Steen.

That said, King has been on the waiting list of wrestlers to make it full time into ROH for quite some time now. He's done well for himself in FIP and has stood out amongst his Young, Rich and Ready for Action stablemates in their sporadic ROH appearances. King will obviously start out as a heel, but I think he has that sort of "Kevin Steen" like personality that should endear himself to the fans as "cool" and "entertaining" within a short period of time, thus turning him face.

SHIMMER Tag Tournament To Be Gauntlet Match

Via Dave Prazak at SHIMMERwrestling.com:

Here's the scoop.

It's not going to be a single elimination tournament to crown the first SHIMMER Tag Team Champions. Rather than put seven tag team matches on a single DVD release, or have to split a tournament up across two different DVD releases, we've decided to go a different route to determine the first title holders, and have it all happen on one single DVD.

The answer is, we will have a tag team gauntlet on Volume 21. Each team will draw a number. Teams #1 and #2 will face each other to start off, with the winners of that pairing to immediately face the team which drew #3, and so on. The team which is victorious during the final pairing in the gauntlet will be crowned the first SHIMMER Tag Team Champions.

This is an easy way to determine the initial title holders, and get it all accomplished in one shot on a single DVD, while at the same time not occupying that entire DVD's card with tag team matches.

I like Gauntlet style matches, although they do tend to be a bit predictable in that the early teams never seem to make it far into the match or that the last team in the tournament wins it, logically being the freshest in stamina and strength. I'm guessing how this particular Gauntlet match works out will depend on the placement of the teams and the booking of the finishes to each match. There are a lot of wrestlers on the SHIMMER roster, so they need as much space on each card as possible to fit them in—that justifies the lack of a single elimination tournament format, but in the end I'd rather have that format and a whole DVD devoted to the tag tournament rather than just "one" match. I do get Prazak's point though and don't disagree with it. As far as potential winners, The Experience of Malia Hosaka and Lexie Fyfe has been THE constant in the division and should be heavy favorites. The Dangerous Angels (Sara Del Rey and Allison Danger) are likely suspects if they're involved. Ashley Lane and Nevaeh will have the plucky babyface upset special role and could steal the titles with some upset wins. The Canadian Ninjas (Portia Perez and Nicole Matthews) will have a cult following and be the dark horse candidates.

ROH Home Theatre Station

ROH Videowire:

The Briscoes shooting in the farm and the movie-like pump action of Mark Briscoe is an awesome highlight, as is Titus's rhyme at the end of the video. Just fantastic storyline advancement on both ends.

CHIKARA Special Edition: Shane Storm "Transforms"

Mixed feelings on the "shot" at Jigsaw and ROH, even though it is one of my least favorite moves ROH has done this year. The move for Storm to go rudo has been a long time in the making, so the mask switch makes sense and natural to the character. Don't know if it will improve him as a wrestler in the ring, but I guess that's a wait and see.

A very special edition of the Fave 5 sees me listing my favorite five released WWE wrestlers of the last two weeks.

1. Colin Delaney: Oh Colin, we barely knew thee. It's a damned shame WWE released him, because he could have been an awesome "loser" character for years to come. The heel turn was poorly thought out and hastily executed. While Colin showed in CHIKARA that he can do the annoying heel shtick very well, it was the turn that ultimately proved to be his demise. It should be interesting to see what CHIKARA does with Delaney upon his return, since his Jimmy Olson has now aligned with hated heel Vin Gerard based on his anger over the deception of CHIKARA officials as to Colin's whereabouts the last ten months. Will the Olsen Twins reunite or are they destined to be brothers at arms against one another?
2. Braden Walker: Male no mistake about it, Harris / Walker was absolutely awful in his match last week, but WWE did him no favors in how they presented him over the last month. What could he really do against Armando Estrada of all people? He's hardly the best wrestler out there. They also put him in there without any of his recognizable gimmick / attire. No trench coat and glasses, which were half of his "cool" look for his AMW entrance. No "wildcat" nickname. Walker was a Dead Man Walking the moment he debuted on ECW.
3. Stevie Richards: I just don't think WWE ever really "got" how to push Stevie. Even when Richards took it upon himself to get over as a character, whether it be "Stevie Night Heat" or as a part of the Blue World Order, WWE just wasn't hip to his jive. Richards was not going to be main event material but used correctly could have been a perpetual presence in the lower-mid card. They gave it a go upon his return from surgery, but it didn't gain traction and so he was out of the picture and then out of the federation. So long Stevie, we'll miss you.
4. Cherry: I love a girl in roller skates. Unfortunately, once Deuce and Domino broke up with her and once that team broke up, there was only so much for her to do based on that gimmick alone. She was happy-go-lucky and was very sympathetic as a face, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to keep her cherry afloat in the sticky soda pop world of WWE.
5. Wes Adams: This poor guy… he referees a match on ECW where a mistake occurred that wasn't his fault (Miz didn't come in for the save and Morrison took the fall when he wasn't supposed to do so at that time) and he gets fired for it. WWE does a better job on its referee tolerance policy than its Wellness / Drug Abuse policy. One strike and you're out.

Honorarium

-"Age of the Fall Rules" match huh? You know, they could have just called this a Pure Wrestling match, reinstate the division and be done with it.

-Deliirous and MSChif in the same stable? Awesome.

-The Briscoes seem to be hinting at a style change in the latest ROH videowire, lessening their high impact, spot to spot style offense. I'm guessing that this is a result of some advice they received from Lance Storm during Storm's recent appearances (they actually traveled together along with Roderick Strong to the Detroit show). This change has started with their match in Manhattan, which was a toned down Briscoes match but still fast paced and physical.

-If you think about it, Lenny Leonard's formal name is Leonard Leonard.

-I have to say I didn't like that WWE was changing Colt Cabana's name to Scotty Goldman. Even though it is close to his real name, it's certainly not as "charismatic" or memorable as if he went by the Cabana name. This is just like what they've done with so many others from the outside of WWE coming in—change the name to something more plain, more vanilla than with what the person came into their system. "Wildcat" Chris Harris was a good nickname and a somewhat recognizable normal appellation. Braden Walker? Complete vanilla job. Monty Brown was a former NFL player, but Marquis Corvon was a name that you had no idea what it meant. A lot of people say, what's in a name? But its one of the very first impressions that you can make to a wrestling crowd.

That said, Cabana, errr. Scotty Goldman, was given a fair deal to get over on Smackdown. They gave him an inset promo ala the old school Superstars style they've been going back to as of late. He was able to give a wacky but cute and entertaining albeit short promo about who he was. You can take away his name, but you ultimately can't strip the man of his charisma. He also was able to keep his "Boom Boom" wrestling singlet with all sorts of "Ka-Pows" and "Bam" special effects words all over it. Maybe if he gets over enough they'll give him back "Boom Boom" as his nickname, which is something more than nothing. Goldman didn't get much offense against "The" Brian Kendrick, but he did get in the Butt-Butt, which received a good pop. It's funny that these two wrestled back in August 2005 in a match where the ass was a point of offense. Kendrick put Cabana over on that night and now more than three years later Cabana puts Kendrick over and probably gladly so.

While he didn't start out as strong as I, or any Colt Cabana fan or ROH follower would have liked, there is a chance Cabana, errr. Goldman, may make it in WWE.

-Tyler Black's face at times looks like its been drawn by Chris Bachalo and inked by Mark Buckingham. Only comic book geeks will get that one, but it's a good one, trust me true believers.

Top 20 Most Exhilarating Moments in ROH History

What is an exhilarating moment? It is an instant, sometimes as short as a split-second flash and sometimes as much as the day is long, where thrill and excitement meet happiness and celebration. It is the end of the school year, or the beginning of a New Year. It is a birthday, a road trip or a wedding. It is your favorite sports team winning the playoffs, your favorite song being played at a concert, your numbers being called in the Lottery. Ring of Honor has provided many of these sorts of moments in its six and a half year history and this is a list of the top twenty of such moments.

These selections were based on how thrilling / exciting they were, the dramatic qualities about the moment, their short-term and long-term meaningfulness to ROH history and the volume and duration of crowd reaction based on the moment.

Honorable Mention: Ricky Steamboat takes CM Punk to school (At Our Best)
Honorable Mention: Jack Evans flies off the cage with a double moonsault (Scramble Cage Warfare)
Honorable Mention: Brent Albright wins the NWA Heavyweight Title (Death Before Dishonor VI)
Honorable Mention: The Prophecy defeated by AJ Styles & Low Ki (Revenge On The Prophecy)
Honorable Mention: Samoa Joe vs. Takeshi Morishima Brawl (Glory By Honor V Night 2)
Honorable Mention: Jade Chung's Emancipation (Joe vs. Kobashi)

20. The Aftermath of Samoa Joe & Jay Lethal vs. Low Ki & Homicide (Punk: The Final Chapter)
How would YOU like to see a chair flying right at you? Or how about several of them? Samoa Joe unleashed a salvo of chair onto Homicide during this lengthy and violent brawl, surely thrilling the fans right next to the action. Low Ki jumping onto Jay Lethal on the risers also was a hell of a moment from this brawl. It was a thrilling back and forth five minutes of action that may be more remembered than the match that preceded it. Samoa Joe rasing his arm in (short-lived) triumph received a great pop from the crowd.

19. The Original Riot (One Year Anniversary Show)
When the actual incident involving Steve Corino, Michael Shane, The Group, Homicide, the thugs that would soon become The Rotweillers and the entire ROH locker room and even a few fans spilled out of control in the Elks Lounge, it became a piece of ROH legend for several years afterwards. There were some there who thought the whole thing was legitimate and there were some fans who looked to get in on the action by jumping the rail (and they soon got their asses kicked by Homicide and other ROH wrestlers). The DVD presentation of the infamous first Riot was replayed three times and from different angles, spoiling the idea that this was a natural and genuine article. However, the intensity of the moment for those live in attendance cannot be denied. This was a moment where so many things were going on that you were just excited to be in the epicenter of the maelstrom. It became the prototype for may of the ROH brawls in the years to come, including the chaos of invasions from the CZW forces.

18. The Briscoes and Steen & Generico Brawl (Respect is Earned)
Speaking of crazy and out of control moments, Steen & Generico were the key players in providing fans exactly that last year. First, their challenge to The Briscoes occurred on the stage where General Admission fans were located. It was exciting to have Steen & Generico in the midst of the fans, then rushing through the crowd to accept Jay & Mark's open invitation. Then these two teams got physical with each other to the enjoyment of the crowd. They were separated, but then the fans were treated to Steen & Generico laying out the students and unidentified indie folks in the most awesome of fashions, including the visual of Steen throwing a wrestler through the ropes and nearly killing the man, and then the combination brainbuster-package piledriver. After all that Generico DIVED onto The Briscoes and an entire pile of wrestlers and the brawl continued through the curtain and to the back. After reading about all of that action, its plain to see why this moment thrilled the crowd and the fans who watched the event on PPV and DVD.

17. The Chair Throwing during the Chicago Street Fight (Death Before Dishonor II Part 2)
There had been a chair throwing incident in ECW and several in other independents, but Ring of Honor had yet to have one of their own. The Second City Saints and The Prophecy had feuded so intensely that when they got the call for chairs, the fans eagerly and with blood thirst began to throw chairs in the ring. Then they didn't stop. The visual of seeing oodles and oodles of chairs landing and piling up was a captivating moment that just captured and held your attention. It was surreal when it happened and then surreal to see how all the wrestlers had to work through the sea of steel to get to the end of the match.

16. Samoa Joe marches down to confront Chris Hero (Fourth Anniversary Show)
Ring of Honor needed a hero when Chris Hero invaded the Anniversary show as a representative of CZW. Hero insultingly sang the happy birthday song and challenged the fans saying there was no one in the back who could stop him. When Samoa Joe walked down, confident and ready to kick some Hero ass, the fans in attendance absolutely exploded in cheers. Joe's appearance was an incredible early moment in the ROH vs. CZW war, something the ROH fans appreciated to see—a major name on their side willing to fight. Hero and Necro Butcher were cleared out and the fans were proudly able to chant for their home company.

15. The Matrix Minute (Road To The Title)
Perhaps the most thrilling minute of action to take place in 2002 was when Amazing Red and Low Ki threw down in a martial arts style duel filled with dodges and escapes. No one actually made contact during this minute of action, but the thrill was in the close call. The artistry in how these two flowed from one attempted strike to the next should also be celebrated. This sequence has faded a bit from memory. If you asked anyone who was paying attention to ROH in the first two years and mentioned this phrase, you would get immediate recognition. Now, perhaps not so much, owing to the large amount of time that has passed and that these two no longer wrestle for ROH, or on the larger independent scene for that matter. But for sixty seconds the only thing that mattered was their duel of kicks and punches.

14. Jimmy Loves Lacey Part Four
This didn't take place at a live event, but it was one of the more "stimulating" vignettes in ROH history. Jacobs had been trying to woo his manager for years and had finally convinced her to go on a series of dates. Just when it seemed he had put his foot in his mouth and ruined it all, Lacey took him in to her hotel room and well, magic happened (or didn't happen for Jacobs as history would soon indicate) The reaction to this video on the forums and on the actual You Tube video speaks for itself—tons of positive feedback, lots of "attaboys" and people being overjoyed that Jacobs had been successful. Then there were those who were worried about the final look Jacobs had on camera after the two had made love (the camera cut away and then came back to give the two their privacy), a look of disdain and dissatisfaction, and wondered what that could mean in the future. This was a moment that has longevity, because it was built up for a year plus and has had an impact much of ROH history since then (the formation of Age of the Fall, the fate of Lacey).

13. The First Scramble Cage (Main Event Spectacles)
Its hard to beat the intensity and violence of a regular cage match, so ROH went the opposite way and made their first ever Scramble Cage about action, speed and high risk. Tag teams like The Backseat Boys, The SAT, Special K and The Carnage Crew were all in the ring at the same time trying to prove who was the best at that particular time. Jack Evans and Teddy Hart stole the show (both in their own unique way). Evans' insanely high-risk flying leaps off the top of the cage were a sight to see and thrilled the crowd (which would become a habit of his). Every team did its part in making this a thrill-a-minute match, starting a trend of Scramble Cage matches that lasted into 2005.

12. The crowd reaction to Nigel McGuinness's promo on vacating / not vacating the ROH World Title (Final Battle 2007)
How can you put into the words the combat of emotions between the pro-Nigel and anti-Nigel fans in attendance, waiting on baited breath to hear Nigel's contemplations about his frequent injuries and whether or not he should vacate the ROH World Title? The simultaneous occurrence of extreme love and extreme hate for one man in the same room is an excitement all unto itself. The vibe in the room changed from one minute to the next, and the Nigel chants changed literally in mid-air. This was white-hot heat for a wrestler at its best, the sort that you really had to be there to fully understand. Its one of those moments wrestling fans live for because it becomes legitimate and real to you—the best kind of live theatre.

11. James Gibson & Bryan Danielson's ROH World Title Wins (Redemption / Glory By Honor IV)
I place these two events together for two reasons: first, their proximity in occurring and secondly because both men were deserving of their ROH World Title win and the reaction each received for doing so. Gibson's win was the culmination of ten months worth of struggling to work his way to the top of the promotion, while Danielson's win was the ultimate conclusion to his three-year journey to the ROH Title. Both men wrestled in awesome matches to win the title and both men received spectacular ovations and post-match celebrations afterwards. Its always thrilling to see a title change hands, but its even more so when the person who wins it deserves the victory and the commemoration that goes with it.

10. Austin Aries Returns to ROH (Driven)
It had been hinted on the first show of that weekend's double shot, but it was confirmed during the Driven tapings that Austin Aries was coming back after two months in exile (not allowed on ROH shows due to his TNA contract and not being booked for TNA because he was out of political favor). He received a massive crowd ovation for his return, with people thunderously chanting his name as he shouted that he was back. THAT is how you do an exciting return, one of the best ROH has ever done. It was dramatic enough for him to run out of the crowd and run off the No Remorse Corps, but when he asked for a pen to sign his new ROH contract and had about twenty tossed in the ring, the moment became visually memorable as well. It was great to know that Aries was back in Ring of Honor, when he could have very well never returned at all.

9. The Original Dragon Gate Six Man Last Five Minutes (Supercard of Honor)
There are two major differences between this and the Matrix Minute. The first difference obviously would be the duration in time. The second differentiation that goes hand in hand with the first is that unlike the Matrix Minute, which was based on dodges and evades, the attacks in this match landed. The famous five minutes featured all out action that hit with impact on every move. Fans were treated to innovative moves and chained sequences that had insanely high degrees of difficulty. The Dragon Gate wrestlers received pop after pop from the crowd based on their action. The fans chanting, "please don't stop" and their increasing cheers and shouts throughout the last five minutes are proof enough of the exhilaration they felt.

8. Project 161
It was only the beginning of a larger viral campaign when secret messages were placed around ROH shows in the Summer of 2007. This was the start of Jimmy Jacobs and The Age of the Fall and to kick start their entry into Ring of Honor an alternate reality game was devised that brought in all interested ROH fans and the internet wrestling community at large. While we kind of knew what we were dealing with a few weeks into the Project 161 angle and website blogs, the confusion of what was going on provided some damned good drama and anticipation for what came next. Fans became investigators into this mystery, looking into secret websites for clues and trying to guess which ROH (or non-ROH) wrestlers were a part of this program. The whole thing took a spin into the real world when a mysterious man was sighted at ROH shows giving out T-shirts and DVDs to select ROH fans. Fans were being brought into a wrestling program like never before (but would soon be repeated with WWE's "SAVE_US.222" campaign).

7. CM Punk Wins The ROH World Title, Turns on the Crowd / Christopher Daniels Returns (Death Before Dishonor III)
Punk and ROH gave fans the excitement of cheering for a wrestler in his last match and the feeling of not knowing what comes next when he actually won the title. Fans were on a roller coaster ride from the minute Punk and Austin Aries entered the ring, although they likely thought the ride ended at the title win. When Punk betrayed their trust and turned heel, only to be met by a returning Christopher Daniels, these extra twists put the excitement factor into overdrive. Many fans couldn't have thought that Punk would win much less what came next. That is the thrill of walking into the unknown.

6. Raven & Tommy Dreamer Reunite (Death Before Dishonor I)
Many wrestling fans that followed ECW had known the history and longevity of the Dreamer-Raven feud. It was intriguing what would happen when both men were in the same place at the same time based on that history. CM Punk and Raven's feud had taken some interesting twists and turns, but the huge climax was when Punk defeated Raven in the chain match and had him strung up on the ropes. Punk was going to being Raven out of sobriety the hard way. Tommy Dreamer came out for the save and the tide was soon turned. It was Punk who was laid out and forced to drink beer. Raven and Dreamer looked at each other tentatively as if unsure what to do next, but they embraced, effectively putting their past history to rest. It was a symbolic moment, tying in the past of independent wrestling with its present.

5. Samoa Joe vs. Kenta Kobashi (Joe vs. Kobashi)
This was a true religious experience for those whose spirituality is found in professional wrestling. This match literally made me lose my mind (video evidence on the DVD when I am shown yelling out a primal scream as Joe poses on my side of the front row). I wasn't the only one, because the reaction these two received still ranks up there as one of the best crowd pops of all time. Joe and Kobashi going strike for strike and chop for chop are huge highlights within Ring of Honor history. Joe vs. Kobashi was a first-time ever match and the very nature of its existence was exhilaration enough. That it lived up to its billing (in my mind and for those in attendance) helped to create one of the best universally felt moments in Ring of Honor history.

4. Saying Goodbye to CM Punk (The Future Is Now / Punk: The Final Chapter)
There have been some very emotional goodbyes in the history of Ring of Honor. CM Punk's farewell may have been one of the more exhilarating send offs—heart warming and tear-jerking at the same time for those who had seen him grow up on the independent scene. The endless stream of streamers would have been enough to make this a memorable and joyous moment, but Punk's tearful reaction and the reception he received from the crowd and his peers puts this one over the top. Two months earlier, the New York crowd had given its goodbye with a huge standing ovation and was reciprocated with an incredible promo from Punk. Turns out he would stick around a bit longer, and the final farewell in Chicago was the one etched in memory.

3. Ring of Honor Wins Cage of Death (Death Before Dishonor IV)
The crowd in Philadelphia had come looking to see the fight of all fights, and that's what they got in the Cage of Death. The finale between Ring of Honor and Combat Zone Wrestling featured plenty of intense action and violence with the cage, chairs, boards, thumbtacks, ladders and barbed wire tables. The match also had some really tight storytelling, with Danielson's betrayal of ROH not to CZW but for himself, the surprise appearance of Eddie Kingston to the delight of the CZW supporters in the crowd, to the appearance of Homicide, met with thunderous cheers. Homicide made his decision to support Ring of Honor and you couldn't hear anything else but the roar of the crowd for the next several minutes. There was excitement and thrills throughout the hour long match and post-match interactions.

2. Homicide Celebrates His ROH World Title Win (Final Battle 2006)
We all saw Homicide's title win coming, but that didn't stop the partisan New York City crowd from celebrating like there was no tomorrow once it actually went down. This fifteen minute post-match celebration by Homicide, the ROH wrestlers and the 1,300 fans in New York City goes down in the record books. I don't know if any crowd in ROH history partied harder after that night as the fans were jumping up and down, chanting endlessly for Homicide and slapping hands with the man as he rushed into the crowd to rejoice with his people. It was a moment of pure release for the NYC crowd who was waiting for their guy to finally win the big one on the big day, and this was their moment in the sun.

1. Austin Aries Defeats Samoa Joe for the ROH World Title (Final Battle 2004) What puts this moment over the top is that unlike Homicide's win, Aries' title victory two years previous was more unexpected and it unseated the longest reigning ROH champion to that point. Some had speculated it would happen, but no one really expected Aries to defeat Joe—most would have told you that Joe would go the full two years as ROH champion before the title switch. CM Punk had given it his best shot and failed, what chance did Aries have? That was a big part of the story of the match. The ROH fans' buzz built up as Aries had more and more momentum in the match. The title win itself had one of the loudest ovations ever in ROH history. The post match was great as well, with fans giving respect to both Joe as former champion and Aries as current champion. A title switch is a moment of pure exhilaration, and ROH fans at that time had waited for almost two years to see one.

ROH Preview: Chicago Ridge, IL August 16th, 2008

Frontier Fieldhouse
7:30 pm belltime
9807 Sayre Ave.
Chicago Ridge, IL 60415

Tag Team Main Event
ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness & Claudio Castagnoli vs. Bryan Danielson & Austin Aries

Castagnoli has absolutely snapped and is totally engrossed in his embittered nature. Bryan Danielson is damned angry at how Castagnoli brutalized him during the four way elimination match at Death Before Dishonor VI. Aries is going to be in the uncomfortable role of keeping Danielson's temper reined in, but I'm sure McGuinness is going to be content to just let Castagnoli do as much damage to either man as he wants. Danielson is looking for payback, but if he can't focus then he won't be able to use his best offensive moves. Aries may have to pick up the slack.

No DQ Match
ROH World Tag Team Jimmy Jacobs vs. The Necro Butcher

Jacobs may be afraid of Necro Butcher but it looks as if he is over his friendship and partnership in Age of the Fall considering he has a new "animal" in Delirious. Jacobs isn't going to be able to avoid fighting Necro anymore though and he'll have to recompense for the abuse he's heaped on the West Virginia native. Expect lots of brawling, lots of weapons and lots of blood on both sides.

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match
Brent Albright defends vs. Go Shiozaki with Larry Sweeney

Albright continues his campaign against Sweet & Sour Inc. and that means putting up his newly won title and fighting their newest recruit in Shiozaki. Sweeney wants the NWA Title back in the possession of someone on his team to use its power and leverage in the wrestling world. Shiozaki wants a title desperately. It could all lead to a bad situation for Albright, who will go power for power in this match against the brawny NOAH import. Albright may find better positioning with a ground submission game, but Shiozaki's chop for chop strategy may negate any attempts to try to get there.

FIP World Heavyweight Title Match
Erick Stevens defends vs. Chris Hero with Larry Sweeney

Based on the results of last night's show, we know that Stevens isn't too proud to accept a DQ win this go around wearing the FIP Title (although to be fair, he was probably in no condition to challenge Castagnoli to restart the match). Will Stevens win here via DQ as well? Its possible but I don't think all that likely—Hero's game is more about the KO than anything else these days. It would be a supreme feather in his cap to knock out the big man here. Stevens meanwhile will have to recover from the beat down he took from Castagnoli last night and use his power and resilience to keep the pressure on his challenger.

The Sweet & Sour Gauntlet
Roderick Strong vs. members of Sweet & Sour Inc. including Adam Pearce, Shane Hagadorn & Bobby Dempsey (if Strong defeats everyone he will get a match vs. Larry Sweeney)

Look for Strong to wipe the mat with several of the lower order Sweet & Sour members until he gets up to Pearce. From then on in, Pearce has the advantage as he will likely be last and come into the match fresher (and with more than a few tricks up his sleeve). You have got to think Strong can't win this one based on the number's game. Even if he gets to Sweeney, what kind of condition will he be in to fight him?

Special Challenge Match
ROH World Tag Team Champion Tyler Black vs. El Generico

Generico is no push over and he is going to fight to the end no matter what. He needs this win to show that his team with Kevin Steen can indeed go toe-to-toe with the tag team champions. Black is surging off of some fantastic performances in matches and though he took the loss last night could come right back and notch a win here. He has the speed, offense and most importantly mental willpower to succeed.

Special Attraction
Kevin Steen vs. Kenny King

Meanwhile, Steen looks to beat some noob bootay in this match. King gave Danielson a run for his money last night, so maybe Steen should not go into this match taking him lightly. I do expect plenty of insulting and trash talking from both sides, which should prove entertaining enough.

Tag Team Scramble Match
Jay & Mark Briscoe vs. Ruckus & Jigsaw vs. Delirious & Pelle Primeau vs. local standouts Tweek & Dash Phoenix

As I said during the ROH Roundtable I like that Tweek and Dash get a chance on this show. Their "twins" act is really effective and they are good at getting heel heat. They need to fight hard against three babyface teams, because they are outnumbered and likely outgunned against The Briscoes. Jigsaw and Ruckus will look to keep the match in "scramble" gear while Delirious and Pelle will play the spoiler.

Also scheduled to appear: SHIMMER Champion MsChif; Daizee Haze; Sara Del Rey; Rhett Titus and others!!!

Hey Ari, now you should do the top 20 rivalries & Storylines. Reason being i want to buy my dvd's in sequence so i can care about the payoff. If all you see is the payoff, it takes away from the quality a tad.

were carrying them at Barnes and Noble, if they don't have them in store, they can be ordered 1-2 business days. We've even have some weird random ROH shows in warehouse. You can even find the PWG Sells Out DVD at certain stores. I gots mine.

The only momment that I felt should have been on the list was London's last match where he kissed the logo. That to me was the ultimate sign of respect to the logo of ultimate respect.

I'm getting so tired of people giving Chris Harris/Braden Walker all this sympathy. So what he looked generic? Last I checked Lance Cade isn't exactly the flashiest guy on the roster either. The difference you ask? At least Lance Cade is in some decent shape and showed a modicum of charisma in the few TV matches he's had over the past couple months.

I agree with you 100% with Delirious and Mschif now being in the AoTF. Them against Daizee and Rhett Titus (if they turn him face...I hope not) or Pelle Primeau could equal some great action and storytelling.
