The MeeThinks Friday FreeThinks: 08.22.08
Posted by John Meehan on 08.22.2008

Welcome back, all! I'm fresh off a week of sun and fun in the great state of Florida (and yes, for those of y'all curious -- I *did* end up taking one last mini-jaunt to The Mouse House while in the neighborhood), and back in action to resume the helm of the MeeThinks Friday FreeThinks. A HUGE thanks to Jarrod Westerfeld for covering for Mee last week, and here's hoping y'all treated him with the same level of respect and appreciation that you so generously bestow on yours truly.

(checks the comments section)

Ahhh, just as I remember it. Clearly, there is a whole lotta' love to go around in the extended 411 family of readers :)

Rock & Roll.

I couldn't help but notice that some folks have chimed in on the comments section with a recurrant gripe that myself (and other 411 news reporters) seem to have a problem with repeating certain news items ad nauseum (and several days in a row). Unfortunately, this sort of thing is inevitable in a business where new stories and new details emerge on a daily basis. Still, there's always room for improvement, and so I'd like to start this week by introducing a new feature to the FreeThinks, aptly titled "The Five D's" of the wrestling week that was.

Here, we'll make a quick note of those mini-news story items that have either already been covered in greater detail by other writers, or that haven't quite yet materialized into full-blown mega stories of their own. In either case, these items seem to warrant a brief mention nonetheless so that we can keep better tabs on what all's developing (and -- in theory -- end up with a better perspective in the long run) along the way.

The Doghouse
Carlito (WWE) - Rumored to be seeking his WWE release (again)
Bob Holly (WWE) - Rumored to be on WWE's "endangered species" list

Notes: Carlito's job might just be a bit safer now that WWE signed his brother to their main roster. Holly, on the other hand, seems all but destined for a pink slip.

The Debuts
Scotty Goldman (Smackdown) - Formerly Colt Cabana in ROH/Indies
Ryan Braddock (Smackdown) - Formerly Jay Bradley/Bradley Jay in WWE Developmental
Primo Colon (RAW) - a.k.a. Eddie Colon, real-life brother of Carlito Colon
Gavin Spears (ECW) - Formerly Shawn Spears in WWE Developmental
Katie Kim (TNA) - Real-life daughter of referee Earl Hebner

Notes: This section will cover all of the newly debuting performers who've made on-camera appearances in the time between the publication of the last issue of the FreeThinks and this week's posting (Thursday night). As such, performers debuting on this week's iMPACT! or Smackdown! may not appear until next issue.

The Departures
Stevie Richards (ECW)
Cherry (Smackdown)
The Highlanders (Rory and Robbie McCallister) (RAW)
Colin Delaney (ECW)
Referee Wes Adams (ECW)
Gail Kim (TNA)

Notes: As they came during last week's round of roster cuts, each of these releases -- save Gail Kim's -- have been covered in detail elsewhere on the site. As such and for the sake of brevity, we'll forgo any further discussion at this time.

The Drama
Sting (TNA) - Sitting out TV tapings until contract details are finalized
Tomko (Unsigned) - Spotted backstage at Summerslam
Mick Foley (WWE) - Not used at Summerslam & awaiting contract expiration

Notes: Stinger's playing hardball, but seems to be likely to re-sign on account of TNA's upcoming "New versus Old" storyline. Meanwhile, Foley is rumored to be fielding offers from TNA, and Tomko was "visiting friends" -- but looks to be on the short list for a re-hire from WWE in the near future.

The Disabled List
Mr. Kennedy (Smackdown!) - Shoulder injury, return date unknown
Umaga (Smackdown!) - Torn PCL, return date unknown

Notes: Kennedy's latest injury may well end up costing him his job, as his contract expires this fall, and this is his third major stint on the DL (plus another for suspension) in his relatively brief tenure on the main WWE roster. This obviously could change, however. On the other side of the coin -- Umaga's job seems to be safe, for now.

Championship Scramble Match Announced on RAW
CM Punk to Defend Against Four Challengers at Unforgiven PPV

If you're anything like Mee, then chances are the *first* thing you thought of when I heard "Championship Scramble" was...

(sorry, couldn't resist)

But seriously -- once you got past the ridiculous name for this particular contest, perhaps the first thing you thought was something along the lines of what all I said in this week's Fact or Fiction. Namely? That the prospect of bouncing the World Championship around in such a fast-and-furious fashion and calling each (momentary) "winner" your "NEW CHAMPION" pretty much devalued the worth of each new championship reign. In case you missed it, here's what I said on the subject yesterday:
Wanna' know why this match is absurd? Let's pretend we're fans of a "real sport," for a second, and we're watching the three-time Super Bowl Champion New York Giants defend their Vince Lombardi trophy in every minute of the game... with whichever team is ahead at any moment being able to lay rightful (if momentary) claim to "World Champion" status. Start with their season opener against longtime rivals and fellow three-time Super Bowl Champions, the Washington Redskins. Redskins kick an early field goal on their first possession? THE REDSKINS ARE FOUR TIME WORLD CHAMPIONS! G-men come back and score a touchdown on the next drive? NEW WORLD CHAMPIONS! Ten minutes later and the 'Skins put up another six? THE REDSKINS JUST WON THEIR FIFTH VINCE LOMBARDI TROPHY! -- and that's just in the first quarter of play. The only way this match works out in Punk's favor (or in the metaphor, in the Giants' favor) is if the champ dominates the contest early and never once allows the opponents to take the lead -- thus increasing the prestige of their championship reign by protecting so much as even a momentary loss of the title which they so bravely defend. Now if Punk can last the full time limit without ever once dropping the belt (even for a second!)? Then we're looking at a bona-fide star making performance, and the guy looks like a world-beater. Otherwise, we're just padding already meaningless numbers and championship stats to everybody involved, thus watering down both the duration and the significance of each new title reign *regardless* of who comes out on top.
Now in fairness, that particular mini-rant was written early on Tuesday morning -- long before WWE clarified how each of the in-match mini-title-changes would be recorded in their storied "record books" (because fake sport or no, it's pretty sketchy to see ANY belt change hands more than once or twice in a week, let alone a single NIGHT!). But apparently, I wasn't alone in hitting the proverbial "panic" button and wondering if this match was going to leave us staring at a newly padded record book of all sorts of ridiculously inflated title reign statistics, as my good buddy JT picked up on this fact in yesterday's news report, joking that John Cena could well be a 19-time WWE/World Champion by the time this one match was said and done.

As such -- the brains up in WWE headquarters decided to clarify Adamle's Monday night announcement late on Tuesday evening, saying:
If a Superstar scores a pinfall or submission on any other Superstar in the match, he is declared the "interim" champion for match purposes (and is not officially recognized as champion in the title history). He holds that designation until another Superstar scores a subsequent pinfall or submission on any other Superstar.
Ahh, that's MUCH better.

Now how's this match going to go down, you ask?

Well if I were a betting man, I'd put good money on CM Punk being able to sneak his way out of this one still holding gold when all's said and done. Bradshaw's best shot at Punk's belt has come and gone (with his clean loss at Summerslam), while Cena and Batista seem to have more than enough unfinished business between them to keep them otherwise occupied (and away from the title picture) for at least a few months longer. That leaves us with Punker and Kane, and while the Big Red Machine is newly "re-monsterized" and seems headed for a pretty sizable run as RAW's number one mega-heel ("SAVE US, RKO!")... he's also just begun something of a teaser-program against Rey Mysterio, and so it's suspect to think that WWE would jettison their latest bait-and-switch angle simply to throw a belt into the mix and needlessly shuffle CM Punk out of the title scene.

MeeThinks?

Now that the rules have been clarified, I fully expect the Championship Scramble match to add a fresh, vibrant and unpredictable shakeup to WWE's main event picture. Stars costing one another gold is a surefire formula for longstanding angles down the line, and with Batista and Cena already at one another's throats? It seems like only a matter of time before what was once a "respect" feud blows up into an all-out war. While I'm no fan of using title matches merely for the sake of advancing other angles on a show... if this match can a) adds a new dimension to the Cena/Batista feud, b) opens the possibility of an in-ring return for Rey Mysterio (or Randy Orton, on a longshot), and c) helps CM Punk look like a stronger and more resillient champion when all's said and done? Well then I'll walk away from Unforgiven a happy man.

Gail Kim Done with TNA
First Ever Knockouts Champion Headed to Greener Pastures

In your "out of NOWHERE" news item of the week, it seems as if former TNA Knockouts Champion Gail Kim has apparently wrapped up her tenure with this Orlando-based promotion. This is particularly surprising to longtime fans of the TNA product, as Gail was featured quite regularly in TNA programming (up to and including this week's broadcast). In addition, she was crowned the first ever champion for the Knockouts title, and was widely regarded as the cornerstone around which the present (and particularly ratings-friendly) division may very well have been built in the first place.

So what's the scoop?

Word late Thursday afternoon was that Gail's decision to leave TNA was purely a financial one, as she is reported to have been made a "sizable offer" to jump ship away from TNA and re-sign with World Wrestling Entertainment.

Obviously, this move is an "insult to injury" scenario for the TNA faithful. First? Losing a bona-fide women's star of Gail Kim's caliber is a tough pill to swallow. Seems as if WWE waited for TNA to do all of the work in re-establishing the girl's credibility and momentum, and then they proceded to pluck her away from this "upstart promotion" where women's wrestling is actually given the chance to showcase its stars. talents and plop her right back into the land of milk and honey (both of which food products may well be involved in future WWE matches and/or bikini contests, I'm sure) where actual women's "wrestling" skills seem to play a far distant second to a nice body, a great tan, and a pretty face.

Second? Many a TNA fan has already begun to cry foul that Gail Kim has "sold out" by choosing to place the almighty (WWE) dollar over her "legacy" as a modern-day pioneer of women's wrestling -- a reputation she had begun to earn for herself as a result of her work with TNA's Knockouts division.

MeeThinks?

The wrestling business is -- first and foremost -- a BUSINESS. And whether or not fans are particularly thrilled at the notion that one of the most talented women's wrestlers on the North American continent may well have decided to trade in her wrestling boots for a boob enhancement and a bikini, the bottom line is that Gail Kim seems to have made a smart business decision without burning bridges with any of the parties involved.

+ WWE saw her work in TNA and were willing to pay a pretty penny to have her back onboard.

+ TNA is reported to be happy with the terms of her release (thus leaving the door open for her return in the future, should such a situation arise).

+ And Gail Kim herself actually gets the opportunity to showcase her skills on a much larger platform... perhaps this time with the "no harm, no foul" confidence that she's a commodity in high demand, meaning that she won't always settle for playing the generic peroxide blonde "WWE Diva" role who's always stuck in pure T&A-style segments and two-minute squash matches.

TNA Launches Viral Marketing Campaign
Company Teases Video Game Launch and New Superstar's Debut

If you caught the end of last week's Knockouts match on TNA iMPACT!, you probably noticed that the broadcast was "interrupted" by a flashing message displaying the phrase "www.whoissuicide.com." And if you headed to that page, you probably caught a glimpse of what appears to be TNA's latest attempt at teasing the debut of a new (or newly repackaged) character -- a masked man by the name of "Suicide" who suggests that he will be debuting in the near future, and looking for payback on those who'd wronged him in his past.

Now then --

Ignoring the MySpace WhoIsSuicide fiasco (with the site being hacked and leading to photos and music suggesting that Randy Orton and/or Ric Flair might actually have something to do with this angle -- which they totally do NOT, by the way), it seems pretty clear that TNA is using this "viral" campaign as a way to cross promote their new video game, wherein this "Suicide" fella' is actually a playable character in the game's storyline mode.

Case in point:

WEBSITE IMAGE =

VIDEO GAME TRAILER =

What will be interesting to see, of course, is exactly *how* TNA plans to reveal the mystery of this masked man's identity in conjunction with the launch of their first-ever video game title. Rumors are running rampant that the man under the hood is none other than TNA's latest "recent release" in Frankie Kazarian, but the manner in which this information is inevitably revealed (both on TNA television AND in the TNA video game) can really go a LONNNG way in making this game (and others using technology like it) a must-own for all next-gen video gamers out there.

Here's why --

In theory, TNA could time things just right such that the video game launches at the very same week that the Suicide character debuts on their programming (the game is scheduled for release on Tuesday, September 9, so let's say the onscreen character debuts later that week on the September 11 iMPACT!). Pretty standard as far as crossovers go, right? (I'm sure most of us will recall Kane's "May 19th Movie Release Date storyline", yes?)

Right. But THEN...

Let's say fans play through the storyline mode in the game only to discover that while there are a TON of new clues to be learned about this "Suicide" fella' throughout the game, in the end his identity was always meant to remain a secret REGARDLESS of whether you can beat the game or not. Pretty shitty luck, no?

At least, or so they thought...

See the thing is: TNA has promised that this game will come equipped with a slew of "never before seen" features -- including the possibility of new heights of online play.

So --

A few weeks into the game's release (say, first week of October), and the initial buzz for your video game has already begun to die down (inevitably, these things happen). So TNA finally decides to "unmask" the Suicide character on their regularly scheduled TV programming, thus giving fans a new reason to head to the stores and pick up a copy of the video game.

Why?

Not because the dude under the hood happens to be all that great a character, but now because you've actually had this thing set up along, and had your crack team of video game engineers over at Midway construct some sort of online-exclusive downloadable content -- a "patch," if you will -- that suddenly enables users to access the new "alternate outfit" for this once-mysterious character... the newly unmasked Frankie Kazarian (or whoever ends up being the actual performer donning the onscreen Suicide guise). All of the sudden, television viewers have a new incentive to go out and buy your video game (complete with the promise of additional downloadable content/outfits/arenas/roster changes in the future), and people who've already bought (and beaten!) the game get a whole new character added to the roster free of charge simply for being fans of the television show.

All of the sudden, TNA iMPACT! (the game) and TNA iMPACT! (the show) find themselves at the forefront of video game and sports entertainment technology. With the benefit of downloadable content "patches" released every so often in the months following a game's release, it breathes new life and viability into the title months after it has already hit your store shelves (this sort of thing has worked tremendously well with online play for the Halo series and others like it). The only difference? TNA isn't merely rolling out new video game levels or characters on a whim. Instead, they're releasing "updates" to the original title, thus giving users the ability to automatically sync the action on the title before them with the storylines, characters, and developments taking place (in just about "real time") on TNA television.

Next up: John Madden 2009 with downloadable injury and roster updates to coincide with actual NFL season developments on a weekly basis.

As you can see --

The "Who is Suicide?" campaign is a ridiculously intriguing concept. Not so much because it teases the arrival of a new star, but because it comes with the possibility of a multimedia crossover that could (quite literally) revolutionize online play and all future sport-related video game titles to come. In short, There's a LOT more at stake here than just one big reveal of an already semi-spoiled surprise of a masked man... and it will be interesting to see if TNA can make this sucker work.

Walter "Killer" Kowalski Pulled from Life Support
WWE Hall of Famer's Health Takes Turn for the Worse

Last week, WWE Hall of Famer Walter "Killer" Kowalski suffered a major heart attack, and was placed on life support. This week, his condition was downgraded from "guarded" to "poor," and his family members made the most difficult of decisions to remove the man from life support. As of this writing, Walter is reported to be resting comfortably with his wife and family, but barring a miracle in the truest sense of the word -- one can only imagine that the most trying of times may very soon wait around the corner for the Kowalski family.

As such, Walter's wife has worked with longtime Kowalski family friend Richard Byrne in order to establish a fund in the Killer's name -- both to help cover the costs of medical attention as well as to help prepare for the (presumably) imminent final arrangement costs to come. Fans wishing to contribute to the Walter "Killer" Kowalski Memorial Fund may do so in one of three ways. To purchase a Killer Kowalski t-shirt, you can click here. If you'd rather make a direct contribution to the fund online and skip on the t-shirt, click here.

Fans of this certifiable wrestling icon also have the option to make their donations by way of good old fashioned "snail mail," addressed to the man's legendary professional wrestling school in Massachusetts. To do so, make your checks payable to:

"The Walter Killer Kowalski Memorial Fund"
c/o Killer Kowalski's Pro Wrestling School
100 Belmont Street
North Andover, MA 01845

And as always, fans and friends alike are encouraged and thanked for all of their prayers, well-wishes and thoughts of support.

Say what you will about the McMahons, but they've really come through for former talents who've found themselves on hard times in the past (ranging from drug/rehab services to paying for the funeral costs for Bam Bam Bigelow and others), and they deserve a fair deal of respect and appreciation for these and other such efforts in the past. Given Killer's longstanding ties to WWE (both as a former employee/Hall of Famer and as the trainer of one of their most prominent stars of all time), here's hoping that Hunter, Vince and company are able to help the Kowalski family out in this time of need.

And With That, I'm Outta' Here

That does it for Mee this week. As we wrap up these dog days of summer, do be sure to enjoy what's left of the sweltering heat (and the hurricanes-in-the-making!). Back to school before ya' know it! So until then, live it up as summer draws to a close, and always stay positive.

They might run some wacky ending with the Championship Scramble like with Hornswoggle and the Cruiserweight title and have a weirdo run-in to pick up he quick win.

OR CM Punk will just pin everyone and get the cleanest of clean wins and make himself a total badass. Either way its still a new concept that we havent seen (unless you say its a Chamber match, minus the Chamber match and add a time limit).

You are looking way to mush into this whoissuicide bullshit. One, games have been adding patches for new content and characters for years now. It's nothing new or revolutionary. Releasing patches coincide with TNA storylines doesn't matter either, because no one fucking cares about or watches TNA.

And whats this, you actually think Suicide should debut on September 11...? Oh my god...

Bring out a character named Suicide on the anniversary of the blackest day in American history, a day where "suicide" pilots took the lives of thousands of innocent lives. A day where many people committed "suicide" rather than die in fire. Yea, real good job there.

If TNA did do that, heads would roll for sure, and it would just prove how clueless and heartless Vince Russo is.

that's sad about killer kowalski, but calling it the K.Kowalski memorial fund before he's even dead is a bit rough

Punk will get his ass kicked the entire match, only to win the title back with less than 3 seconds on the clock.

Not impressed

Addition to the Drama section: Tazz took Mick Foley's place at this week's Smackdown tapings.

Please don't get my hopes up by saying Kennedy will be let go. As I'm sure we'll have to endure his very unentertaining and overated presence for a long long time.

gail leaving tna is a smart move financially and a dumb move creatively. no one will ever pass up more money and even more exposure. however, tna's women division is miles ahead of wwe. theirmatches are on par or even better than the male main events.

Posted By: rey (Guest)  on August 22, 2008 at 07:51 AM

if any of you have seen the latest trailer for tnas game you will see suicide is the character you play in story mode. he is crushed at the beginning then you have to reinvent him aka create a characer. just a spin on that all this is god research your shit before you rant

Posted By: well shit (Guest)  on August 22, 2008 at 09:14 AM

The one thing about the scramble that's not like a chamber match (aside from the lack of chamber) is that it's not elimination. SO you could have Cena pin JBL, get knocked out of the ring and Batista pins the still prone JBL and then gets knocked down and Cena immediately pins the guy again... something like that.

Posted By: M:-X (Guest)  on August 22, 2008 at 09:27 AM

Good to see you've come around on the Scramble. Rather than seeing the wrester that scores the current pinfall the "winner," I see him more as "in the lead" for the time being. It does seem a little too much like the old hardcore title battles for me though.

Suicide is indeed an interesting concept. The 9-11 release of the Suicide character is not.

Posted By: Bret Fart (Guest)  on August 22, 2008 at 09:32 AM

Welcome back Meehan. I think the suicide thing is a good idea. It's cross promotion. People who play games may be compelled to check out the tv product, and vice versa.

Posted By: Toddo (Guest)  on August 22, 2008 at 10:00 AM

....and if WWE did the exact same thing with SvR, Guiness, you'd be sucking Vince's knob saying it was the greatest marketing idea ever. Get a life you mark!

Haven't watched the WWE women's matches lately, have you? If you had, you would how little difference there is now between them and TNA.

Also, in case you forget, Gail was booked as a serious wrestler during her initial WWE run, and she won a lot more than she lost. She'll do fine.

If they fire Kennnedy, as well as Cena, Finlay, Khali, Mickie, and Bradshaw; I might seriously consider watching the E. again. Maybe.

I really want punk to win, but if he loses maybe he'll get some clean rebound victories in good matches to prove he's not just a punk, (Couldn't reist).

Welcome back to WWE Gail, the women's division has improved and hopefully you'll be able to do what you do best..Proform in the ring.

I've given up TNA, I haven't watched impact for a month now. I just can't take it anymore! so the suicide character doesn't matter to me.

Kennedy blew his chances, and gets injured so often it's not funny. besides he's stalled and he and writing haven't been able to give his character any deapth or meaning. The Indy's might be best for him.

please find out what Tomko is up to. I really miss him.

Hey WWE marks, when Beth Phoenix and Mickie James main event RAW the way Kong and Kim headlined Impact then Women's wrestling is on par with the Knockouts. Until then these women are just wrestling to get a photo spread from Hef.

people want us to believe the wwe takes women wrestlers seriously. santino , who is funny, is in the middles of the womens title picture on raw. and the smackdown champion is decided based on who she is dating. sounds like something thats taken seriously to me.

Guinness, you idiot.

Nobody watches TNA? Howbout a third of Raw's audience watches Impact! Not shabby for a company that has been around for what, five years?

I'm sick of the TNA cynacism. Sure, I'd change much of their creative decisions, but hell, would you rather the industry go back to one federation with no competition? I just don't understand why everyone is rooting against TNA; if they succeed, and they have clearly, it means better and more wrestling on television.

Hey Ryder - How about actually doing some research before spouting off?

There actually was a MAIN EVENT match for the WWE Women's Title between Trish Stratus and Lita on the 12/6/04 RAW. Also, anything TNA thinks it has done with their Knockouts division has already been done by WWE. As to Awesome Kong(super strong female wrestler) - ever here of Chyna? Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's been done.

So really, TNA and the Knockouts are about 4(or more) years late! If you want proof, the match is on youtube. You even get to see the Spike Tv logo as RAW goes off the air. Enjoy!

adrea -

giving an example of one match from fuckin 2004 in order to prove that the wwe woman's divison is on per with tna's division(which gets alot more screen time, depth and epic battles like kong vs kim) really shows how desperate you are to excuse EVERYTHING the wwe does, even if its a well known fact that the company is willing to push girl on the basis of them appearing on playboy, and where good looks will always come before talent. if you cant see how the knockouts division differs from maria or kelly kelly(who does sommersault and all of a sudden is suppose to a "good" wrestler, even though all of her moves looks like shit)clumsily tries to wrestle, not because they had talent to begin with, but because they look good with bikini, you need a reality check.

giving an example of one match from fuckin 2004 in order to prove that the wwe woman's divison is on per with tna's division(which gets alot more screen time, depth and epic battles like kong vs kim) really shows how desperate you are to excuse EVERYTHING the wwe does, even if its a well known fact that the company is willing to push girl on the basis of them appearing on playboy, and where good looks will always come before talent. if you cant see how the knockouts division differs from maria or kelly kelly(who does sommersault and all of a sudden is suppose to a "good" wrestler, even though all of her moves looks like shit)clumsily tries to wrestle, not because they had talent to begin with, but because they look good with bikini, you need a reality check.

Apparently your comprehension skills are a little bit lacking. Let me try again. First, who is adrea? I did not see that poster on here - perhaps you meant AndreFan(although how you got adrea from AndreFan, I don't know).

My post was simply to counter a post by someone else. Everything in my post is correct - it has all been done before. I was making no direct correlation between TODAY'S female wrestlers in WWE and the Knockouts. The original poster said "when" WWE has a women's title main event, I just wanted to remind everyone WWE already did that long before TNA.

I am sorry that you took this so personally(even though the post was directed at someone else). I am also sorry you cannot accept the post as the simple statement of fact as I meant it to be.

Suicide and Homicide on the same show? Lovely.

Next thing you know, 95% of all wrestlers over 6'9 will have a chokeslam/big boot as a finisher.
