The Triple Threat 8.24.08: The 105th Edition - Gail Kim, Scramble Matches, The Great Khali and More!
Posted by David Martell on 08.24.2008
The Triple Threat is back once again and we actually have three people writing! We talk about the championship scramble matches, Gail Kim, Kane/Mysterio and everyones favorite wrestler, The Great Khali! It is a must read!
Welcome back once again to the Triple Threat. Really, this time it is a triple threat! This week we talk about the Championship Scramble matches, Gail Kim and everyone's favorite wrestler, The Great Khali! Plus much more! Sit back, relax and enjoy.
Topic # 1 What are your thoughts on the Championship Scramble match that will take place at Unforgiven for the RAW brand?
David Martell: First off, I love the idea for this match. It reminds me of a match they had for the Hardcore title back in the day. If anything, my favorite part of the scramble match is that we are guaranteed a twenty minute match. With that said, I am not fond of some of the participants. CM Punk and Batista I have no problem with because one, CM Punk is the champ and two, Batista has earned his spot to go against Punk. The other three guys, Kane, Cena, and JBL, should be no where near this match. Where is Chris Jericho? If anyone deserves to be in this match, it is definitely Jericho. Not only has he been on a roll with his new heel character, he has beat CM Punk on RAW in his home town! JBL already lost to Punk. Cena, I believe, has lost his last three PPV matches. Kane well he is just Kane. Anyways, this should be a fun match and it might actually make me buy the PPV.
Alex Mattis: Just more of the same for Raw. Same guys in the title hunt and more and more crap being dumped on CM Punk's title reign. JBL just lost his title shot at SummerSlam, yet is deserving of getting another immediate shot at the title? Cena just lost to Batista in a match that I felt had some kind of title contention status to it, but nope they are both in the title match. And what has Kane done to deserve a title shot? Yet none of his title shots in recent memory have really been "well deserved." Now I may just be doggin' on this match because A. the SmackDown scramble is much better and B. I sick and tired of seeing the same guys in the Raw main event all the time. Really I'd settle for Lance Cade in the title scenario just because it would be something new for Raw.
Zach Brown: I really like this idea for a title match. But in RAW's case, it's all the usual suspects going for the title. Granted, Jericho is already in a great feud with Shawn Michaels, but I'd much rather see him in the mix as opposed to Kane or JBL. And while I like this idea, it makes me a little uncomfortable that CM Punk has a small chance of retaining the title. With the way the match is going to be set up, it would make no sense for CM Punk to hold on to the title for the entire match. But the real question is, will they let Punk score the final pin? They could give the title to Batista because he's way over. I just hope they don't give it to Cena because he is as stale as ever right now. Overall, I'd like to see Punk hold on to it for another month or two at least.
Topic # 2 What are your thoughts on the Championship Scramble match that will take place at Unforgiven for the Smackdown brand?
David Martell: It looks like Smackdown decided to copy RAW and make their own scramble match for the WWE Title. This one, to me, looks a lot better then the RAW version. Who would of thought that THE Brian Kendrick would be in a WWE title match? He has been pushed to the moon and I am enjoying it. It is good to see a guy like Kendrick finally get his time in the spotlight. He even cuts decent heel promos! Shelton was also a bit of a shocker. Who knows, maybe he will repeat what he did in the past and beat Triple H. MVP is also a good candidate for this match. He has proven that he is one of the top guys on Smackdown and deserves his shot. Jeff Hardy was almost a given. I have a feeling he might come out the champ this time around although I would rather have someone else get the strap. Honestly I don't care who wins as long as it is not Triple H. This should be a great match and it makes me happy that WWE is pushing some of this guys to main event status, even if it is just a one time thing.
Alex Mattis: Now this is what I'm talking about, 4 fresh guys getting a title shot. Now to be fair I wouldn't go as far as saying that all four are at the top of title contention right now, but they have been on the winning side of things and their involvement makes more sense that JBL or Cena. I think it was a blessing that SmackDown lost some of their bigger stars in the draft because it has given them room to develop new stars and put fresh faces in the title hunt. I think this one has the potential to be a very solid match as I think that the different styles of the wrestlers involved will mesh very well. Trips has been on a pretty good streak of delivering solid matches, Shelton always delivers in the high profile matches, MVP is an all around solid talent, while everyone knows I don't care for him Jeff Hardy will more than likely bring his A game, and THE Brian Kendrick has never been here before so I expect him to put in a great performance.
Zach Brown: While the idea for the Championship scramble is great, I have to say that the scramble for the WWE title is much more interesting. It's Triple H against 4 young guys that have never held a major title before, and that makes things interesting. First of all, Brian Kendrick in a title match!? Has that ever happened before? I definitely didn't see that coming, but it's a pleasant surprise. I don't think Kendrick is over enough to hold the belt, but it's interesting nonetheless. MVP, Shelton Benjamin, and Jeff Hardy are all great additions to the match as well, and I really don't know how this is going to go. In my opinion, the most likely outcome is HHH retaining. And if that's the case, that's really unfortunate. I'd love to see WWE take a chance on a young guy, much like they did with CM Punk. If I had to pick a person to win besides HHH, I'd expect WWE to go with Jeff Hardy. I personally would want to see MVP win, but I doubt it would happen. But I have to admit, if both champions retain in these matches, I'll be very disappointed because it will be a huge missed opportunity for shocking moment in WWE.
Topic # Gail Kim has recently split ties with TNA and could possibly return to the WWE. How do you feel about this situation?
David Martell: This is a bit of a surprise to me but it is a welcome one if she ends up going to the WWE. Although I think that TNA's women's division is better, the E's women's division has been getting better. Gail Kim would be an excellent addition to any roster and I would love to see her face off with Beth Phoenix. This is a big loss for the TNA's women's division but with or without her they still got a stronger core of women wrestlers.
Alex Mattis: I always had a thought that one day she would end back up in the E. Vince & Co. really didn't know what they had with Gail and when they lost her they lost arguably the best female wrestler on their roster at the time. Since her spilt from the E she has had some spectacular performances in TNA and I think WWE realized what they lost and more than likely will welcome her back. I assume her leaving TNA has something to do with how horribly the company is being run and knowing that she won't have trouble finding work elsewhere.
Zach Brown: Well this is a big loss for TNA in my opinion. She was their first women's champion, and besides Awesome Kong, I think she was easily TNA's most talented female wrestler. But I guess WWE is the logical choice for Gail. She held the Women's belt in WWE, and I can easily see her doing it again. But I'm just so used to seeing her in TNA, so it will be a little bittersweet. Oh well. I hope she meshes well with WWE's wrestlers because she is a lot more talented than over half the women in the company. Overall, it's a good choice for Gail's career, and I hope she has a great second run in WWE.
Topic # 4 Morishima has been popping up in a few WWE dark matches recently. Not only has he won the matches, he even had a manager in the form of Tony Atlas. How would you feel if Morishima ended up in the WWE?
David Martell: This would be awesome. There are not enough Japanese wrestlers in the WWE. Morishima is a great talent and could wrestler around most of the guys in the WWE. The E has been smarter about who they pick up lately and I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up happening. Who wouldn't want to see Morishima wrestle the likes of CM Punk, Chris Jericho and Randy Orton? He could be a great monster heel with a mouth piece better then the likes of Mark Henry because Morishima can actually wrestle. I really hope this turns into something because I would love to see the big guy make it in the WWE.
Alex Mattis: Oddly exciting news. Odd in the sense that I didn't see it coming, exciting in the since that Morishima may possibly go to the E. Now I don't think it is going to happen right now, Morishima is in my opinion the top dog over in NOAH and I assume is making bank between Japan and with his ROH gigs. Morishima is one of the best in the world and I think is the best "big man" period. The E has never really had any puro influence in the company, but an addition of a guy like Takeshi could really show something new to a portion of the E's audience. With all the in-ring stuff aside, Morishima could be a fantastic Yoko-style dominant heel. If they gave him a mouth piece and just had him kill bitches with his stiff-dominant style there's no doubt that he would get way over. I think Takeshi still has some to do in Japan and I always love his work in ROH, but with his talent and size it wouldn't be surprising to see this beast wrestle for the E one day.
Zach Brown: This is an interesting development. I'd like to see Morishima in WWE because he's one of the stiffest and most powerful wrestlers I've ever seen. I wonder how Morishima would fit in WWE. He's a big guy, and that's the way Vince likes it. And I think he could have a great feud with pretty much any of the top dogs in WWE. I just hope WWE doesn't give him a bad gimmick or anything. Morishima's gimmick is killing people. I'm not kidding about that. That's his calling card, and I don't want WWE to change that one bit. His ROH career was one of the best and it was right up there with Samoa Joe or CM Punk in my opinion. And while it took a while for me to warm up to him, I eventually realized how great he is. I would be glad to see Morishima sign with the WWE and I hope he would have a great career with them.
Topic # 5 What are you thoughts on the recent Kane/Mysterio storyline?
David Martell: This storyline really fooled me. I completely forgot about Mysterio and I was pretty confident it was Kane's mask in that bag. It seems like every once in awhile the WWE out smarts its fans and that is a good thing. This is an interesting storyline because I want to see how Rey will return. Is he going to be deformed, or evil, or a Wrestlemaniac!? Yes that's a joke about his movie. It seems like once again Kane gets his yearly push and this time I actually care. Maybe we will even see Rey in an old Kane mask.
Alex Mattis: Interesting turn of events with that whole sack storyline. I have no idea what this is supposed to be leading to. REY HEEL TURN 2008? Whatever it is I don't see it being anything other than just plain silly. If it is a feud between the two that would just be ridiculous. I have always hated it when the E puts Rey against a monster like Big Show, Khali, etc. because it just hurts the credibility, what little is left, of professional wrestling when you have freak match ups like that. Other than that I don't understand why the E keeps putting Rey in high profile programs. I understand that he sells merch, but his heart isn't in it anymore he's phoned in the last 3 or so years of his career.
Zach Brown: This was an interesting swerve on WWE's part. First of all, it made Adamle look good by forcing Kane to reveal the contents of the bag. It was a weird move to make Adamle look good, but oh well. Secondly, Kane got on the mic on Monday, and wow, talk about disturbing. When was the last time we actually heard Kane cut a promo? And he knows all those big words too...But seriously, it is a pretty decent storyline. I'm really starting to wonder where Mysterio is. But I heard they made a mistake back when this first started. Apparently Rey had actually wrestled that same night that Kane started toting the sack. Tsk tsk WWE. All in all, I'm interested to see where this goes. I'm not exactly exited about any sort of in-ring chemistry between Kane and Rey, but the storyline is intriguing enough.
Superstar Highlight
The Great Khali
Our thoughts on The Great Khali.
David Martell: He may possible be the worlds largest piece of shit wrestler. I absolutely hate this guy. He is a GAWD awful wrestler and should NEVER be seen in the ring again. I hate that he disgraced the WWE World Title with his name and the fact that he was going against Triple H for the title at Summerslam makes me sick. I wish he would just stay in movies and give up on his wrestling career because it isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Oh, and how can I forget that he beat the Undertaker clean. Please WWE, read this and take it in. The Great Khali is worthless.
Alex Mattis: Other than his performance in Get Smart, this guy has been good for nothing since his arriving in the E. I don't know what there is left to say. And it isn't his fault; it is the fault of the E for giving a guy such a huge spot just because he is interesting to look at. The Great Khali more than anything symbolizes what is wrong with wrestling to day and more importantly what is wrong with the E and how they view professional wrestling or "sports entertainment." But bitchin' there not much that is going to change, the E will continue to constantly use Khali now matter how many times he stinks up the building just because Vince & Co. likes "the big guys."
Zach Brown: I'm just going to go ahead and say it. The Great Khali is one of the worst wrestlers that WWE has ever used. In my opinion, Snitsky and The Great Khali are tied for worst wrestler in WWE. The only difference between the two is that The Great Khali gets used much more than Snitsky. Let's break down why The Great Khali is so God-awful. First of all, he has some of the worst finishers ever used. A chop to the forehead? A vice grip? Awful. I seriously can't stand watching him. What is WWE thinking!? "He's big." Wow. No one cares! And for a "wrestler" he does absolutely no mat wrestling whatsoever. He just stands around and tries to hit his opponent. He's basically just tossed around in WWE, having pointless feuds with everyone. I feel so bad for a wrestler when they're paired with Khali. With all the releases happening in WWE lately, I hope Vince comes to his senses and realizes just how bad this guy is.
A Great Khali video.
That's all folks. Join us again next week and don't forget to leave your comments. Have a great week in wrestling. CYA!
Anybody else wanna bet that if Morishima signs with WWE he'll show up on ECW as Dylan Foxworth?

You guys are such bitchy smarks.
1. Khali doesn't suck, he just has a differnt role to fill then the cruiserweights the IWC idolizes. He's supposed to be big and scary, he picks guys up by the throat, puts them several feet in the air and throws them down. by size alone the Khali chokebomb is an amazing finisher.
2. because he's so big Khali's workrate suffers, he has to be extremely careful because everything has so much force behind it and he could easily cripple smaller guys. a lot of his matches with bigger guys have been okay because they can take it. The thing is he's not going to be good looking squashing cruiserweights, becasue he has to keep himself from literally crushing them. Big Show, Cena and Triple H on the other hand have the padding and bulk to survive him, and he can unleash legdrops elbow drops, and not have to measure his chops as much.
3. by virtue of being a freakin monster any win over him is going to elevate a younger guy. Vince hasn't used him like this much, but if Vince wants a young face to get over, have him beat Khali. no matter how much he jobs, Khali is never the underdog in a match.
4. He's freakin terrifying!
5. Ranjin Sighn is a funny guy and without Khali we'd lose him.

i agree w/you david that none of the participants in the world scramble match deserve a title shot, but i dont think Batista deserves one either. he gets, yet again, another title shot and like always , he'll come up short (i hope). seriously, he needs to go away from the title picture, i dont care how popular he is. if anything, jericho deserves a title shot, and they should just make it 1 on 1. i really fucking hate batista and think he is very stale.

What's with all the Khali hate?
I think he's great, he's a huge wrestler and a natural heel.
I love how you guys are like FIRE HIM...but he's DRAWING MORE THAN MOST OF THE ROSTER.
HE HAS ALL OF INDIA BEHIND HIM. Do you understand how much money this makes the WWE?!?!
Good thing you're not running this company...you'd all be out of business

dylan foxworth... LOL!!!

"Worst....prom couple....ever" THAT'S why Shane is GOLD!!!!
Seriously though, Khali isn't THAT bad, he's at least gotten a little better since he's been around. Should he have had the title? Hell no. But I've seen worse. Anyone remember Giant Gonzalez/El Gigante? *shudder*
Posted By: Guest#0201 (Guest) on August 24, 2008 at 04:39 PM
Khali has improved a bunch, but your blind hatred of him won't allow you all to see it. Also, I don't have a problem with any of the wrestlers in the Raw scramble. I'd love to see Rey cost Kane the title during the match.
Posted By: The Great Capt. Smooth (Guest) on August 24, 2008 at 04:53 PM
Oh yeah....Khali is Ric Flair compared to Giant Gonzales...THAT guy was the WORST wrestler EVER!!!
Posted By: Michael in Austin (Guest) on August 24, 2008 at 05:08 PM
Just noticing something. We'll out and out defend Khali from writers when we all know that he's limited and dangerous to work with (it's very hard to shrug off killing a guy with a botched Flapjack). But We'll all out right rip into Goldberg and Hogan when the writers give them begrudging acceptance, dispite them obviously being bigger draws and better in the ring.
we're weird.
Posted By: Davis (Guest) on August 24, 2008 at 05:10 PM
A lot of a wrestlers persona is how he is used. Khali is suppose to be slow and plodding, therefore his matches are as well. Remember when the Undertaker first started? How about the title run of Yokozuna? These guys had a lot more in them, but the way they were booked determined how they were viewed. If the IWC were alive and running things during Undertaker's first days, we would never have seen the Phenom develop.

If there's one thing that really REALLY pisses me off about this column: your views are so generic and mundane. I could go on any wrestling forum in the world and hear these exact same thoughts. None of you have any personality, or any balls to say anything out of the ordinary. You just say what you think everybody wants to hear.
This is exactly why guys like Csonka and Dunn get praise, because they say interesting stuff that doesn't get said by every single person in the IWC.

Rey's heart isn't in it, and neither are his knees.
I agree with all the points Davis made about Khali. I would also like to add that it's usually up to the David and not the Goliath to make the story compelling. Khali is not supposed to excite you with his wrestling ability as a heel, it's up to whoever is facing him to find a way to overcome the size difference and get everyone involved. The fact that smarks hate him too because he doesn't do pretty backflips makes him even more valuable in that regard. Some guys are better at using him than others. I imagine his popularity in India is also a great reason to keep him around.
I do agree that he could stand to lose the brain chop.

I met khali in a waffle house, to his credit he is a class act, making sure everyone else ordered before he did, and even posed for a picture with a waitress.

So Gail left TNA because of how horrible they are run? Oh so THAT'S why every report I've read said she left purely for the money. Nice try.

Anyone who knows TNA knows they dont pay guaranteed money but to the few top guys and there is no disability protection..gkim did the smart thing...its single A ball....

umm, wwe's rey mysterio wasnt in that crappy wrestlemaniac movie. it was rey's uncle, the original rey misterio

well this has turned into my 2nd fav. column on here next to fact or fiction. On a side note, I'm cool with THE brian kendrick and all but that spot belongs to the Big Show. It's a real shame how they've booked him ever since he came back in great shape. First, he makes his return and has to get punk'd out by a boxer half his size then nothing special has come after that...a whole bunch of meaningless feuds. I don't mind seeing kendrick in a title situation, just a little bit down the line though but I do give them credit for trying something new.
Posted By: cj (Guest) on August 24, 2008 at 10:43 PM
How awesome would it be if in the last couple of minutes/seconds in the SD scramble, Hardy gets a pin on MVP or Shelton (HHH will not be buried!) and then gets hit with THE Brian Kendrick's finisher for the 3 count.
Too bad it'll never happen.

The great Khali rules. His title reign was MUCH MUCH MUCH better than Chris "im so boring" Benoit. (yes i said it)
You guys are gay. You all want "technical" shit. which is equal to a lot of man-hugging. Khali has had AWESOME FEUDS with cena and batista
Cm punk should be fired b4 khali
