The Cheers 'n Jeers of Wrestling 8.24.08

What got cheered? Who got jeered? Only one way to find out...
Hey everybody, Michael O here with another sexy installment of the Cheers 'n Jeers of Wrestling.
Before we get to it I'd just like to extend my thanks once again to everybody that bothered to check out the debut last week and thanks also for all the kind feedback. It is my hope to come up with something a little more easier on the eyes as we progress, and I'm sure some other fun changes/additions will occur here as well. Let's roll...
CHEERS
to the Undertaker for returning at Summerslam and, along with Edge of course, delivering a suitably epic finale to their incredibly epic feud. I'm aware that people seem to be divided on how great the match actually was, but I found it to be an extremely satisfying pay-off and easily the best match I've seen all year. In fact, it was possibly the greatest Hell in a Cell match of all time that didn't feature anybody falling off, or falling through, the top of the cage.
Plus, I'd imagine The Rated "R" Superstar's stock has risen considerably as a result of just how much the Dead Man had to do to finally vanquish him. Hope he had his wallet with him at the end though. Due to the ever-rising cost of fuel, I'd imagine a trip back from Hell is going to cost a pretty penny.
Back and deader than ever or How I spent my Summer Vacation
JEERS
of course, to the WWE for the bullshit that was the ECW title match at Summerslam but...
CHEERS
to the same WWE for delivering a nearly Wrestlemania main event caliber match with Batista V Cena. It seemed a lot of people were expecting something half-assed, a fuck finish or a complete bait-and-switch altogether. Obviously that is not what happened and what do I care if they've "given away" what was supposedly destined for the grandest stage of them all?
I can't say that I've been thrilled with the majority of what the WWE has had to offer for the last few years, but one thing they rarely mess up is Wrestlemania, and I'm sure we'll have an event fitting of the title with or without a first time Cena/Batista clash. Maybe it was because I hadn't been too excited about the match beforehand, mainly for the reasons listed above, but I found it be pretty damn good and, in concert with the main event, it literally saved the show from becoming a bummerslam.
"Can I have my finger back?"
"...no"
CHEERS
to Gail Kim for apparently signing to the WWE and adding to Connecticut's ever expanding roster of talented ladies. If the E is serious about maintaining two different women's titles, they're obviously going to have to bring in more talent to sustain them and this is a great move. I'll admit I was highly skeptical when it was stated sometime ago that the E would start to portray it's Divas in a less trashy way and downplay the T&A in favor of actual wrestling. I still have my doubts about how committed they are and I wouldn't be surprised if a wrestling psychic (you have to look, but they're out there) told me that by next summer we'll have a title unification match in pudding, but I can't deny that they are on the right track.
The re-signing of Kim, who was let go years ago for basically not having Playboy potential, is evidence of this.
If this woman brings you a Coke, and is giggling as though she's made a joke, DON'T DRINK IT!
JEERS
to CM Punk for putting in a good showing at Summerslam and finally capturing a clean win in a big match, only to choke in a non-title bout against Chris Jericho watched by substantially more people the very next night on RAW, thus negating any momentum gained from the previous night's victory. You know, all my friends try and tell me that wrestling is fixed, but I know it's not because there is no way anybody with the ability to operate a pencil would script such a piss-poor championship reign.
CHEERS
to Santino Marella for being the current Intercontinental Champion, the theoretical number 2 champion on Raw, despite his biggest accomplishment this year being a tainted win over Mickie James. I'm all for Santino, the charismatic underachiever, holding some gold while he and Beth Phoenix ignite the screen with their blossoming romance and I never really thought Kofi Kingston needed it to begin with. Kofi needs a story people can care about and he needs to continue to get wins while looking impressive over big players. Carrying around a seriously devalued I-C belt wasn't going to get him anymore over than he is anyway.
Proof that losing to women and getting a DUI actually can payoff
CHEERS
to Vladimir Kozlov for being Russian at a time when the reds are in the news for all the wrong reasons, ensuring a fair chance that the undefeated mauler could find himself shunted up the card with more haste and ferocity than previously imagined.
CHEERS
to THE Brian Kendrick for being fortunate enough to be the last man standing after Big Show busted up Smackdown's Championship Scramble battle royal and ensuring himself a spot in a PPV World title match. Sure, he'll probably only be there to eat some pins, but Kendrick making it to pay-per-view, in a World title match no less, goes a great distance in establishing him as a force to be reckoned with and helps scrub off that jobber stink.
Outside of a decent run in the tag ranks with Paul London, Brian has spent the majority of his 5 plus years with the WWE jerkin' the curtain but now that he has a winning streak, a bodyguard, and a fancy new ring jacket, there's no telling how far he'll go. Sure, the former "Spanky" is too small to probably ever have a run at, or make a serious run for, one of the major belts, and while I wouldn't expect it myself, I'd be remiss in not mentioning that people used to say the same thing about Shawn Michaels and Eddie Guerrero. Ya never know...
"Sweet...I might actually make it into the new Smackdown game this time!"
JEERS
to evidently legitimate motorcycle accidents and the irreparable damage they sometimes cause the fledgling credibility of 411 writers.
* CHEERS of the Week *
to former Nitro girl, and current wife, Rebecca Michaels-Hickenbottom for taking a shot to the mouth in furtherance of her husband's feud with Chris Jericho. I'd like to think that most among us aren't particularly thrilled by the sight of a woman getting punched in the mouth and it seems counter-intuitive to the new "family friendly" direction the company is trying to go in, but if you weren't clamoring for HBK to return and kick Jericho's ass, you probably are now. Though I have to ask, if you weren't clamoring for HBK to return and kick Jericho's ass to begin with, how did you find this site and why are you still reading this?
Eh...still better than being married to Stone Cold
* JEERS of the Week *
to Bill Goldberg for announcing that he'd like to step into the ring for one last payday and inciting more internet speculation than the one-time hot, but long-time not deserves.
I never understand how anybody can get excited over another Goldberg return, especially now that it's going on 10 years since he was the least bit relevant and he's made it pretty clear that he could care less about wrestling as a whole. Seriously, the guy had an incredible run for a little while he was undefeated in WCW and...? I cross my fingers that his return will be against The Ultimate Warrior in a "winner kills the loser and then himself" match.
"I'm not past my prime!"
"Hey...what the fuck did I do?"
So that's me done for this week. Feel free to share your cheers, jeers or even your deepest fears in the comment section. Hey, it's okay, you can talk to me about stuff like that. I'm a doctor. At least that's what I tell the ladies.
That last part was awesome. Yeah Goldberg has no business wrestling again. Sure he was World Champion in WWE but his title reign didn't exactly set the world on fire, although it did make people want to burn things.

Michael O, I really love the pictures with their captions! I do disagree with you about Goldberg. The guy has always been in great shape and to put him in one more match wouldn't hurt anyone. GOLDBERG VS. GOLDMAN IN A FIGHT TO FIND OUT WHO IS THE SUPREME JEW!!! MARK YOUR CALENDERS!!! (That was bad. I'm sorry.) We could even get a run in by a returning Brock Lesnar.

The Warrior/Goldberg pictures made me laugh so much.
Love this column.

Jeers to WWE for making the tag champs look like tag chumps on raw.
Cheers to Santino for his unibrow.
Deepest fear would be for JBL to be champ, please lord no.
Are you just doing WWE? I don't know if you follow TNA much. I'm not sure there would be enough room for all the jeers involved with that.
Cheers to my girlfriend for getting all her stuff replaced that the corksuckers stole out of my car.
Cheers to you my friend for another fine column. Keep on keeping on fucker.

I'd love to watch Goldberg sqash one more guy, or be used to elevate somebody. come on it would be his last match, have some respect for nestoglia. besides Goldberg wasn't too bad, he was stiff and somewhat limited, but he pulled it off quite nicely. and after having to watch Chris Harris everyone seems talented.

I'd love to see Goldberg go to ROH and spear/jackhammer Nigel McGuiness for a 10 sec. burial.

cena will be batista 1 on 1 at survivor series setting up the big payoff at wrestlemania for the tie breaker with a heel batista as champ

Brilliant column. The Jeers of the Week section was especially awesome, and the captions under the pics are awesome. Keep up the good work, man.

HA HA HA!! That was great! I like the Warrior picture 2... Hilarious!
"Due to the ever-rising cost of fuel, I'd imagine a trip back from Hell is going to cost a pretty penny"
No kidding! Good luck Edge!
Great Column! Keep it up! Have a great week!
PEACE!

Thanks for readin' everybody!
The Great Cap'n- Goldberg vs Goldman in a yamika on a pole match?
Somewhere, Vince Russo just got a chubby and he doesn't even know why.
J-Boy- The real cheers of the week is to your girlfriend and the retrieval of your stolen goods. Glad to hear it!
Eh, I follow TNA, loosely, but I didn't watch it this week and I didn't read about anything that struck me as a cheer or jeer. In fact, Smackdown was the only TV show, wrestling or otherwise, that I actually watched this week. Don't tell anybody though.

Goldberg is poop- not just normal poop, more like poop after a weekend of beer and donairs!

Wow, this column is a big fat stinky JEER!!!!! Can't any writers on this site get an orginal thought and not rip off ideals from others?!?! Oh well, there is always the HH column, oh yeah, another stolen ideal, the news jpurnal, another rip off, buy or sell, yep, seeing a pattern yet.....

The Bomb!- Cheers dude, you have a great week too!
Fuzey- Beer and doniars? That sounds greasy. Real greasy.
The Great Cap'n Smooth- No, but he'll do a run-in and whack both with his cross as payback, for, well, you know.
flair sucks- The Cheers and Jeers concept is older than I am, no doubt, but I think there is a reason why it's been used and abused by some many publications over the years. It's popular, and to the best of my knowledge there is no other Cheers and Jeers of wrestling out there, though I don't usually go to any other wrestling sites other than this one and I don't read too many magazines these days. So if someone else out there is doing the exact same thing, sorry, and I'll be happy to cut you in on a percentage of my earnings.
And I think you mean to say "ideas", not "ideals". Unless you mean to look like a moron.

Is this guy for real? What a fruit loop.

I don't understand why everyone is assuming that THE Brian Kendrick will actually be in the Championship Scramble match. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the guy and his new character, but let's look at the facts.
Right now, unless WWE actually is looking to pull the trigger on elevating somebody new or rolling the dice with Jeff Hardy, there are absolutely NO believable title contenders in this match from either a "pecking order" or storyline perspective.
On top of that, how does the Big Show "eliminating" most of the participants in a battle royal he is not even a participant in even COUNT?!? I'll tell you how it "counts": Vickie will come out next week on Smackdown and scream at Show for ruining the match and tell him that if he wants in the match so bad, he'll have to face the winner for his spot. Then, like it or not, we have someone credible (okay maybe simply just BIG and we know how Vince likes the big guys)in the title match.
I REALLY hope this does not happen, but in the WWE Universe, it is a helluva lot more likely than a real Brian Kendrick push to the title picture. Everyone keep your fingers crossed!!

hey i seem to recall that Gail Kim SUCKED during her first run in WWE. I remeber her blowing all kinds of flying spots during matches at an alarming rate..i hope like hell she's improved but i haven't been able to watch her SINCE then!
