The Wrestling Bard 09.27.08: Superstar Spotlight -- Christopher Daniels
Posted by Aaron Hubbard on 09.27.2008
The Wrestling Bard celebrates its Silver Anniversary by reviewing five matches from one of the best wrestlers in the world. Featuring matches with Elix Skipper, Azrieal, and Braden Walker! …Oh yeah, and Samoa Joe, Evan Bourne, and AJ Styles as well. Who cares about them?
Welcome to the Wrestling Bard, with my twenty-fifth article in twenty-six weeks. For those counting, that means I've lasted SIX MONTHS! Yes, despite roasting Bret Hart, ranting about my faith, fantasy booking, ripping off Larry Csonka, praising Ring of Honor, praising John Cena, and skipping a week for a spiritual revival, I AM STILL HERE! The Wrestling Bard WILL NOT DIE!
Well, actually, yes it will. See, I'm kind of failing to live up to the namesake of Bard. The point of that was that I could tell stories from all over the wrestling world. Sometimes I've succeeded, other times, not so much. So, shortly after twenty-five weeks, this column will head the way of the dodo. And to rip off one of my favorite writers: like some perverted phoenix, a new column will rise from the ashes, one which continues the trend of bad puns on my last name…
THE WRESTLING HUBBUB!
Just kidding. This was a name I was considering when I was hired, but it fell through. But I am going to take things in a new direction very soon. See, I'm actually kind of tired of voicing my opinion on wrestling through rants. Other columnists do that, much better than me, so I'm going to accentuate the one thing that I have been doing since I was fifteen: booking my own promotion.
I started writing about wrestling by fantasy booking TNA. I had my own storylines. They were simple, but they made sense and were logical. I wrote a few big spots for an AMW vs. Triple X match, and then I did that for an Ultimate X match between Daniels, Styles, and Sabin, and I stumbled into scripting entire matches, and well, the rest is really history for me. As a sample, I'll be posting two articles booking a feud between AJ Styles and Shawn Michaels. I once wrote a TWENTY page article on those two, and the feud was actually better than the matches. I now feel confidant in my ability to write matches that can live up to the feud (and hopefully more compact ones), and I hope you'll enjoy them. This will start next week!
Of course, one of AJ Styles' best opponents has been none other than Christopher Daniels. I once listed my top ten favorite wrestlers of all time, and Daniels made that list. I haven't talked about him much since then, mostly because he's been Curry Man for most of the year. Now, I love Curry Man, don't get me wrong, but it's not exactly a gimmick that gets you high-profile feuds. But right now, I'm going to highlight one of the most talented men in our business. He is quite possibly the most underrated and overlooked wrestler of the last ten years. I give you, "the Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels!
Christopher Daniels is fairly well known in the wrestling world. At age 36, he is a legend of the independent circuit and has been an institution in TNA wrestling almost since its inception. He is a promoter's dream due to his versatility, his lack of ego, and his great talent. Daniels has made a career out of carrying people, from opponents, to tag team partners, to entire divisions at times. I honestly cannot think of a single instance where a match or angle suffered because Daniels was in it. What's perhaps more shocking is that Daniels seems to be universally liked. The bookers love him, the fans respect him, he is an internet darling, and critics rave about him. The only real complaint I've ever heard about Daniels is that his mid-level moves look like finishers. This is true. But Daniels is still an amazing wrestler. He is crisp, clean, smooth, technically sound, innovative, and his repertoire reads like an encyclopedia of wrestling. Another notch in his belt is that none of his fellow wrestlers have a bad thing to say about him. He is respected, admired, and liked by all that know him or know of him. One of my favorites, today, I pay tribute to the "Fallen Angel".
Six Sides of Steel Match: Triple X (Christopher Daniels & Elix Skipper) vs. America's Most Wanted (Chris Harris & James Storm) (TNA Turning Point 2004)
This match was the culmination of the several-year feud between the two top teams in TNA. The losing team would have to disband FOREVER (cough). Chris Harris brings a set of handcuffs which might come back to haunt him. The intensity from three of the men (Elix never looks intense) is off the hook. This has Big Match Feel. The four men brawl off the bat and Storm and Daniels try to ram each other into the cage before tagging out to their partners. Elix hits a series of knees and a kick to the back on Harris but eats a full nelson slam. AMW hit a double back body drop on Elix, double team Daniels, try the back body drop but Daniels avoids it and fights off AMW but they pick him up atomic drop style and ram him into the cage. Daniels blades and AMW work him over Skipper prevents a suplex from Storm and Daniels rushes to tag out. XXX hit a few double teams on Harris and beat him down for a while. Daniels works a half-nelson chinlock and we get a nice look at his crimson mask. Daniels spits at Storm and Storm tries to interfere and that allows XXX to double team Harris some more. Elix tries some kicks and Harris catapults him into the cage. Storm gets the hot tag and hits a powerslam on Daniels and an enzugiri on Elix, sets him up for the Death Sentence, Daniels takes out Storm but Harris hits a crossbody on him. Elix flapjacks Harris into the cage, busting him open, and he HANDCUFFS HIM TO THE ROPES! Elix beats on Storm while Daniels taunts Harris with the key, and then drives it into Storm's face. XXX ram Storm into the cage and he's busted open. Storm kicks out of the gutwrench/elbow to the throat combo, dodges a flying clothesline from Daniels that takes out Elix, and hits a spear on Daniels. He gets the key to Harris and Harris gets a lariat on Elix and a spinebuster on Daniels. All four men brawl and Storm hits a reverse suplex into the cage on Elix, a spot from their first cage match in 2003. Harris lifts Daniels in a suplex and rams him into the cage twice before hitting the move. Daniels kicks out at 2, and XXX hit a suplex/crossbody combo on Harris for 2. But Elix kicks out of the Hart Attack at 2. Touché. XXX make a comeback and hit the Death Sentence on Harris for 2. They try it on Storm, but Daniels tells Elix to climb, Storm fights off Daniels, SUPER POWERBOMB TO ELIX! But Elix kicks out at 2. Daniels hits the Angel's Wings but Storm kicks out at 2. Daniels and Harris head up top, Elix follows, WALKS THE CAGE AND RANA'S HARRIS! Daniels follows with an elbow drop from the top of cage, but it only gets 2. They work the tower of doom and Daniels flips and lands on his knees in a SICK bump. Harris and Elix dodge finishers and Elix eats the cage. Daniels and Storm trade shots, Daniels avoids the Swinging Noose, tosses Storm off the ropes, but Harris pulls him off and HANDCUFFS DANIELS! Storm jacks Elix with a Superkick, and AMW hit the POWER-PLEX to finish off Elix and win the match. The shot of a bloody Daniels close to tears is a powerful image to cap it off.
What I Liked: I don't have too many complaints. The match was an intense, bloody spectacle with amazing spots and sound psychology. The cage-walk rana is easily one of the coolest spots in the history of wrestling, and the Tower of Doom was sick. But it's easy to overlook the great storytelling with the handcuffs and the stealing of finishers. Daniels got busted open early and took a ton of abuse, but also showed some personality by taunting Harris with the key. What I Disliked: I actually understand why they did tags at the beginning. They are tag teams, it is what they are used to doing, but it didn't make it less annoying when the match devolved into a spotfest. They still worked the hot tag brilliantly with the handcuffs, so they didn't NEED to do that at the beginning, but that's a minor complaint. I also have an uneasy feeling watching Elix Skipper do that rana. Like the Foley Cell bumps, it was cool once, but I'm not sure I want to see others try to do it again. Spots are awesome, especially when they come off, but Elix almost slipped and really could have seriously hurt himself. Future wrestlers: just leave the spot alone and don't try to duplicate or outdo it. I don't want you to die trying to entertain me. The Verdict: If you look in the wrestling dictionary under Epic Blow-Offs, this will be one of the matches that it will direct you to. It was a true feud ender as the two teams would never face each other again, had amazing spots and storytelling that make it one of TNA's best matches to date. Daniels really carried Elix in the Triple X team, and he served as the glue in this match, but all four men were game on this night, and what you get is an amazing near classic. ****3/4
Christopher Daniels w/ Allison Danger vs. Azrieal vs. Matt Sydal (ROH Joe vs. Kobashi)
For all of you Indy haters, Matt Sydal is Evan Bourne. For all of you ROH lovers, Azrieal justifies the belief that some Indy talent should stay in the Indies. This is double elimination. They do some basic triple threat stuff at the beginning and Azrieal and Sydal double team Daniels. Sydal goes for a tornado DDT but Azrieal catches him, and Daniels flips Sydal into a powerbomb by Azrieal for 2. Daniels hits a leaping heel kick for 2, and Azrieal starts dominating. Daniels monkey flips Sydal into an electric chair facebuster by Azrieal before turning him inside out with a lariat. Daniels dominates, but Sydal gets an awesome spot where he leaps off of Azrieal and hits the tornado DDT on Daniels for 2. Azrieal hits the UGLIEST cobra clutch backbreaker ever, but Sydal makes up for it with a nice legdrop for 2 on Daniels. Azrieal and Sydal double team Daniels but Daniels comes back with a bulldog/clothesline combo. He does a WWE-ish comeback but hits the Blue Thunder Bomb on Sydal for 2. Azrieal breaks up the Last Rites with a top rope clothesline for 2. He hits the neckbreaker in the ropes (I hate that spot) and a double stomp, but Sydal hits Azrieal with the Slice for 2. Sydal hits Daniels with a slingshot hurracanrana on the floor, and Azrieal follow with…a pescado. Yeah. Azrieal hits an enzugiri and a sick kick that sends Sydal 360° for 2. Sydal finally takes him out of the match with Cyclorama. Sydal gets a couple of nearfalls but Daniels KILLS him with a clothesline. Daniels gets 2 off of a backdrop while the announcers fantasize about a Daniels-Curry Man match (winkwink). Sydal kicks out of a DVD and gets 2 off of the prettiest standing moonsault in the business. Sydal gets a pair of nearfalls off of a crossbody and an O'Connor Roll, lands on his feet off of a back body drop, ANGEL'S WINGS OUT OF NOWHERE and Daniels is victorious.
What I Liked: Daniels was hugely over with the crowd here, but unselfishly allowed the other two to shine. Sydal in particular looked like a huge star, as he got to show a ton of unique moves. Everything he does is so crisp and fluid. A little over a year later, Daniels and Sydal would team up to be ROH Tag Team Champions. This match also made Daniels look like he was in another league over his opponents (he is) without burying either of them. Take notes Triple H. What I Disliked: Azrieal was in the match and at times dominated it. He only served as an extra body so that Sydal could pull off some high spots, and contributed nothing to the quality of the match. His cobra clutch backbreaker was atrocious, and hurts an otherwise very good match. The Verdict: This match wasn't supposed to steal the show. It was supposed to showcase Sydal, give Daniels a win, and be fun filler. It did all of that and a little more. ***
What I Liked: This match kept my attention the entire time. It was very dramatic and engrossing. Joe looked like an unstoppable monster and Daniels looked like a hero who would never quit. After the commercial break, the action was brilliant, mixing storytelling with high spots. The blood from Daniels was necessary and the finish was fantastic. What I Disliked: This is nothing against the match itself, but I have a small complaint. I watched this match off of the DVD "The Best of the X-Division, Volume 2". TNA could have easily included the opening minutes of the match, but they didn't. Also, the action before the break is a little slow, as you basically come into the heat segment of the match. Watching both parts without the break shows how awesome the match is, but I can imagine viewers seeing the first few minutes and not getting engrossed. So really, it's TNA's fault, not Joe or Daniels'. Surprised? The Verdict: Were it not for Undertaker and Angle's No Way Out rematch, this would have been my vote for Free Match of the Year for 2006. This was awesome. ****
What I Liked: This match was excellent. Fantastic double teams, great spots, and an unbelievable finish all make this exceptional. Daniels and AJ went out of their way to put over Hernandez as an absolute beast (which he is), and Homicide being unable to climb the cables because of an arm injury made Hernandez climbing make perfect sense. None of the spots looked contrived, especially the Hernandez splash which by logic should have. What I Disliked: Not a whole lot, but I do have two major complaints and one minor one. The early spot where AJ missed the ropes after Cide swung him off the cables was the only noticeable botch, which is impressive considering the amount of insanity in this match. But the ladder, while short lived, was not needed, and neither was Konnan's interference. Even still, it makes sense in context, since LAX are just thugs who will do anything to win. The Verdict: This is one of TNA's best matches. Daniels was at the top of his game and was, again, the glue of the match. The match was well thought out and came off brilliantly. ****1/2
"Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels w/Allison Danger vs. Erick Stevens (ROH Good Times, Great Memories)
For people who don't watch ROH, Erick Stevens is a HOSS. He's a great big man babyface and the WWE really should take a look at him. He could replace Jack Swagger in a heartbeat. The Code of Honor is followed, which is a big deal for Daniels. The story of this match is the youth, size, and strength of Stevens versus the experience, speed and skill of Daniels. Stevens plays the role of brick wall and gets 2 off of a suplex and again off of an elbow drop. Daniels gets a knee to the gut and sends Stevens outside. Daniels expertly distracts the referee so that he can slam Steven's ribs into the guardrail, lacerating his midsection, and follows up with a gourdbuster on the back of a chair. Daniels works over the ribs, but Stevens counters an abdominal stretch with a hip block takeover. He tries to work Daniels over with strikes but Daniels keeps going back to the ribs. This goes on for a while until Stevens hits an overhead belly-to-belly suplex. A release German Suplex sets up the Choo-Choo Avalanche and a lariat for 2. A powerslam and a senton get another 2 for Stevens. Daniels comes back with a reverse lungblower, and then a Samoan Drop and a seated quebrada for 2. Stevens counters a crossbody with the TKO for 2. 1 minute remains in the thirty minute time limit, and they trade strikes before Stevens gets the gorilla press powerslam. He foregoes the pin and tries the Doctor Bomb, but Daniels avoids it and the fifteen minute time limit runs out.
What I Liked: This match didn't feel like fifteen minutes, and it just flew by. The story of crafty veteran versus powerhouse kid is a great one. Daniels was only able to dominate by working over the ribs and he went after them at almost every opportunity. Stevens got to hit most of his power moves for believable nearfalls, but never got the Doctor Bomb, which would have beat Daniels. The first fourteen minutes of the match are fantastic. What I Disliked: I feel that the last thirty seconds feel forced. Daniels also looked weak as he avoided the finish for thirty seconds and didn't try a roll-up or anything. Stevens should have tried a pin on the gorilla press slam, which would have made Daniels look tough for kicking out. It's a little thing that have given the match another 1/4* and make it very good instead of just good. Also, given the circumstances, which I'll explain soon, I wish Daniels would have showcased a little bit more, and possibly put over Stevens clean. The Verdict: Poor finish aside, the rest of this match is good. It told a good story and made both men look good. I really would have loved to see a rematch with a finish, but oh well. ***1/4
Of course, the real reason I posted this match is for the promo that immediately followed it. Here's a transcription from Ari's Column of Honor, which he copied from somethingawful.com forums. Major credit to all involved. This was my promo of the year in 2007.
(Daniels and Erick Stevens have just wrestled a 15 minute draw. The fans are chanting "5 more minutes!")
Stevens: Mr. Daniels, I know I'm the new guy around here, but these people just saw me take you to the limit. I was seconds away from finishing you off. They all saw. So if it's not too much to ask, why don't we give all these people what they want, and give me what I want, and put five more minutes on that clock!
Daniels: Erick Stevens! You want five more minutes! (Points at the crowd) You want five more minutes! Well since you are the new guy and I've got something to say, I'm gonna tell you... no. I'm gonna have to ask you to vacate the premises, because I've got something to say.
(Erick Stevens leaves the ring)
Chicago Ridge! It's been two years now since I've come back to Ring of Honor. Two years since my exile ended, and as I stand here in the center of this ring in front of all of you, I've got to say this... I should have never come back.
When I was gone, I fought every day, tooth and nail, to come back here. And now that I'm here, now that I've made myself available for all of you, you act like you don't even care! You act like I'm inconsequential! I've been taken for granted by this company, and worse than that, I've been taken for granted by each and every one of you. I came back to Ring of Honor to be World Champion, but when was the last time that Christopher Daniels was offered an opportunity to earn a title shot?
No! No! Instead I'm wrestling in filler matches, matches that don't matter if I win or lose. Four Corner Scrambles! Opening matches, over and over again. All I've been doing in this company is treading water. And then, what happened when I fought my way into the title picture? What happened when Matt Sydal and I became World Tag Team Champions? You people acted like those belts belonged to Austin Aries and Roderick Strong! Or those belts belonged to the Briscoe Brothers!
You acted like me and Matt Sydal were a couple of ham sandwiches that didn't even deserve the belts. You couldn't wait for us to lose those titles! Why?! Why did you give up on me, when I never, never gave up on you!
Was it TNA?
You people just never quit. Just because I'm a part of TNA, doesn't mean I didn't bust my rear end every time I stepped into a Ring of Honor ring. The only people that think there is a rivalry between TNA and Ring of Honor are you people! Not the TNA office! Not the Ring of Honor office! And not the wrestlers! Just you!
You people act like just because I'm part of TNA that I'm restricted on what I can do here in Ring of Honor. You are still making me pay for a decision I was forced to make over three and a half years ago. Well you know what? I made the right decision then, and if I had to make that decision today, I would have chose TNA all over again.
You wanna know why!? You wanna know why!? Why don't you take my bank statement and put it next to Bryan Danielson's bank statement, and you'll know why. I make a six-figure salary at TNA. One million people see me every week on TNA television. What has Ring of Honor ever done for me? Huh? Do you think I can feed my daughter on you idiots chanting (mockingly) "This is awesome!" *clap*clap*clapclapclap* "This is awesome!" *clap*clap*clapclapclap*
(Crowd chants "This is awesome!" at him)
(Danielson throws his arms up in the air in frustration)
Do you think when my son is sick that the doctor gives me his medicine because you idiots type on the internet that I had a four-star match with Austin Aries? I am sick and tired of being judged by all of you, when you have less than no knowledge of what it takes to be a professional wrestler. You don't know one thing about the effort and dedication that it takes to step into this ring. I can't believe that I wanted to commit to this company full-time. Why should I stay in Ring of Honor? So you can use me up the same way you used up Samoa Joe?
Well let me tell you a little tidbit, the reason TNA took Samoa Joe from Ring of Honor was to protect him from you people! They knew that Joe would have killed himself just to make you happy. But you would never be happy. You'll never be happy. And now Joe's been gone for two months, and you've already forgotten about him. You've forgotten about Samoa Joe. You've forgotten about CM Punk. I'll give you one week before you forget about everything Colt Cabana has ever done for you. You're already waiting for the next kid to come up, someone like Davey Richards or Rocky Romero so you can bleed them dry too.
Well you know what? It's not gonna be me. I'm not giving you one more minute of my time, one more drop of my sweat, one more beat of my heart, just so you can piss it all away!
I'm announcing the official Christopher Daniels Farewell Tour! It starts right now, and it ends the minute I walk through that curtain. Because as far as I'm concerned, you people have seen my last Ring of Honor match.
You people broke my heart. You break my heart! I didn't think I'd ever say this, but Ring of Honor, you can go to Hell. I QUIT!
(Alison Danger walks up to Daniels, pleading to him. Daniels then shoves her down. The crowd boos as he yells at her. The crowd then begins to chant, "F*** you Daniels!")
This concludes my look at Christopher Daniels. I hope you had fun reminiscing about some of his great matches over the years, and continue to enjoy one of the most overlooked talents in all of professional wrestling, one of my favorites. Even if all you enjoy about him is this:
Remember, in addition to being the Fallen Angel, Christopher Daniels is HOT, he's SPICY, he TASTES GREAT.....he's CURRY MAN! Have a good week
Remember, in addition to being the Fallen Angel, Christopher Daniels is HOT, he's SPICY, he TASTES GREAT.....he's CURRY MAN!
WTF? NO!! Curryman has hair, Daniels does not. Curryman doesn't speak English, Daniels does. They're clearly different people >_>

Nice article. IMO, Christopher Daniels is the single most under-rated active wrestler out there. As awesome as Curry Man is (and believe me he is) I miss seeing the Fallen Angel on my TV. Thanks God for my Best Of DVDs and the 1st 2 years of ROH DVDs that I've been collecting.
I just watched the Straight Shooting DVDs with Daniels and then the Daniels/Styles one. I recommend them, especially the Daniels/Styles one for some great road stories.
Cheers

I miss the Fallen Angel. I didn't think Curry Man would be around this long. :(

I couldn't be a bigger Daniels fan. He has been the only wrestler I mark out for since 1999, when I got a "best of" VHS tape off his official website and it came with a hand written thank you note from him for buying it. He's a class act, and incredible promo, and the hardest worker you can imagine. Great article on an amazing worker. Maybe he can win the big one someday, and if not, I'll have plenty of memories of him making EVERYONE else look better just from his presence.

Hey, look at that! A week went by and I wasn't mentioned in the first paragraph. I'll be damned!
In all fairness, I've enjoyed the last few weeks more than usual. You seem to be relaxing a bit and hitting your stride. All you gotta do is pick an opinion, stick with it, and come correct. I'm almost proud...

I think he's a sexy beast. :)

Curryman is Christopher Daniels?! What are you smoking?! Next you'll be telling me Mr America was Hulk Hogan or something equally stupid!
They were born on different continents! Curryman is Japanese!

Great read. I've been a fan of Daniels for years. I fell like they wasted the angle with Sting. I still don't know what happened there

I think they should let Christopher Daniels wrestle as himself, instead of acting like a dancing fool. I would like to see Curry Man attack Sharkboy & "Super" Eric, then unmask as Christopher Daniels. That would be a nice heel turn.

To anyone who has not seen that promo, go get it! That was 1 of the best ROH shows ever (from top to bottom). That promo gave me goosebumps.

"Welcome to the Wrestling Bard, with my twenty-fifth article in twenty-six weeks. For those counting, that means I've lasted SIX MONTHS!"
Congrats! Time went by pretty fast for me. I remember reading ur first column. It feels more like a few weeks ago than 6 months.
"So really, it's TNA's fault, not Joe or Daniels'. Surprised?"
Not at all. HA!
Great job again this week! Daniels pretty much owns. He's another guy that eats his WHEATIES!
Great reviews. I actually have never seen his entire match with Joe. My least favorite match, of the ones I've seen, was the last one. Simply because like I said last week there wasn't a finish. It's ok sometimes but usually I hate it. the last part aside I still thought it was pretty good & worthy of 3 stars.
Once again great job! Take it easy & as always,
PEACE!
