The Best Of The Rest 10.01.08: Volume 60 - The WrestleMania Matches I'm Hoping For
Posted by Alex Mattis on 10.01.2008

Hello all and welcome back to the "Best of the Rest!" Hope all is well with everyone. Well I finally figured out this whole format change deal and how it's going to roll. I'll go into that in a moment. So what's on tap for this week? Well I realized the other day that we are half way to WrestleMania and I have no idea what they're going to have at the card. Usually around this time you can get an idea of what gonna go down, but with the way the E has been going lately it's really hard to tell. So this week I'll discuss the top matches that I would love to see the E put together for the event. But first let's get to that format change... LET'S GET DOWN TO IT!!!

Format Change!!!!!
Did I over do the exclamation points? Maybe. Anywho, this column has change little by little since I first started it. I have never been really able to find my nitch in having a set format but I think I've got one now. It's hard for me to cover all the current wrestling news every week because I usually am always discussing it on "The Triple Threat." But from time to time it needs to be discussed. Going back a ways, when I was writing them, I received a good amount of positive feedback on the "Forgotten Classics" and "The Plug Zone" segments. So what I've come up with is a rotating system of these topics plus one more. So from here on out this is how it's going to unfold:

-The first week of every month I will have "The Best Of The Rest: The Essentials." Similar to "The Plug Zone," here I will go over a DVD of a show or documentary or "Best of" that I think every wrestling fan should own.

-The second week of each month I will have "BOTR: Used To Perfection." Basically I will discuss very important elements of professional wrestling (bleeding, kicking out of finishers, gimmick matches) and example of when they were... wait for it... wait for it... Used To Perfection.

-3rd week "BOTR: The Forgotten Ones." In the vein of "The Forgotten Classics," here I will go over matches, wrestlers, managers, etc. that I feel don't get the proper credit.

-Last week of the month will be the same ole' "Best Of The Rest" that you've come to know, discussing all the news of upcoming events of the wrestling world.

I'm excited to try this out, and hope it works out for the best. Now for what y'all came for...

WrestleMania XV: We're half way there...
Well we're just about 6 months, one half year, away from the biggest event in professional wrestling. I will be attending this WrestleMania, so my excitement level for the event will be even higher. It's about that time where the E starts to set the wheels into motion for the main matches that will take place on the card, with that being said there are some matches I think would work out perfectly at this time and would love to see the E put together for "The Grand Daddy of Them All." Here are the top three matches that I would like to see at WrestleMania 25.

World Title Match: Chris Jericho (C) Vs. Randy Orton
The seed has already been planted for this one. Jericho has made his intentions of being a dominant champion clear, and Orton has stated that it doesn't matter who the champion is when he gets back in the ring, he's getting his title back. This is one of the few chances where a heel vs. heel match could work at a high level. Jericho is intent on showing the he is the best wrestler in the world and such and will face anyone who challenges that, Orton doesn't give a shit and will take out anyone and everyone to get his title back. Jericho successfully defends his title over the next few months and Orton just beats everyone on Raw until he earns a title shot and Blam! We've got it! Words cannot describe how good this match could be. I don't know if the E could/want to stretch Jeri's title reign out that long and might pull the trigger on this match earlier. I do believe this match will happen and when it does I think Orton will walk out with the strap. I hope the E can save this one for 'Mania because it is definitely worthy of the card.

WWE Title Match: Triple H (C) Vs. Mr. Kennedy
Now this match doesn't make me jump out of my skin or anything, in fact I don't know if I could personally take in interest in it, but this is one of the biggest match ups that could be put together on SmackDown for the title. H is just running through everyone, so by the time 'Mania rolls around there may not be many options left. I think if Kennedy's bad luck doesn't act back up, and that is a HUGE if, the E could give him the nod to win the Rumble in January thus setting up a title showdown with Trips. Much like the previously mentioned match, I think this could be a great face vs. face encounter where the audience is split in half. I mean I'm not talking Warrior-Hogan split, but the crowd could still be into it. I don't know how high-quality this match could be, but like I said at this point in just seems like one of the bigger matches SmackDown could put on. I mean they could do Taker-Trips, but do people really wanna see Taker win the title at 'Mania for a third year in a row? In the end, if this were to happen, I think Trips would retain the title. I just don't see the E giving Kennedy the title right now. I think he could one day hold the gold, but for right now he's the got that "unpredictable" label to him that will allow him to only get so far.

Interpromotional Match: The UnderTaker Vs. John Cena
I know at this point in time this one seems a bit far fetched and out there, but realistically speaking it could make some sense. These are the two biggest stars in the company that don't have much going on. Taker's got that deal with Show that doesn't seem to be going anywhere and Cena's on-again off-again injury status may be jeopardizing his spot. These two really haven't done anything high profile in a while and at the current pace they are going, I think their 'Mania matches could be lackluster to say the least. The interpromotional matches are incredibly easy to set up. You say "this guy is representing Raw and this guy is representing SmackDown." You don't really need a build, like the Batista-Umaga match. But if the E wanted to put some sort of a story to it, one guy could fuck the other over in the Rumble then said fucked over party could return the favor at No Way Out and we've got a FEUD!!!! Like... oh what was that epic encounter at WrestleMania XX that started just like that??? I don't remember, but it was INCREDIBLE. In all seriousness, from what we've seen in the past, these two can deliver when they're pitted against one another. Add on the fact that it's WrestleMania and we could be talking about a classic match up. Everyone always wonders in Taker will ever lose at 'Mania and I know some people would be outraged at the thought of Cena ending the streak, it's often those kind of elements that mix to give up an entertaining experience.

Well that's it for me this week.

Next week the first installment of "The Best Of The Rest: The Essentials"

Remember feedback, as always, is welcome at slash_632@hotmail.com or directly below. Tell me what you think about the new format.

Here's one thing that's not going to change...
*This Week's YouTube Sendoff*

I've been a Kevin Nash bender as of late and this is golden... the greatness picks up around 5:13, but check out the beginning also for some Don West goodness.

Until next week, take care.

Watch TNA instead. At least it has "wrestlers" that give a damn.

Man, I wouldn't pay to see any of those WM matches. You just CANNOT have heel vs heel for Wrestlemania, where's the feel good moment in that? Kennedy's got no chance (nor should he) and there's no real reason to either feed Cena to Taker's Mania streak or end it.

Posted By: Guest#7390 (Guest)  on October 01, 2008 at 03:32 PM

I dont understand why many 411 writers want to push Kennedy so hard. He has been suspended due to violating the wellness policy and always gets injured. Granted, he is great on the mic but pushing him for this wrestlemania would be a mistake. If anything I would like to see

World Title: Batista vs. Cena
WWE Title: Orton vs Edge...Come on that match would be phenomenal

This was an incredibly lame column. If this is the "Best of the Rest" then then rest much be pretty awful too. I hope next time out for this guy he make a little better effort. I'm all about fantasy booking. I think it's a lot of fun and regularly particpate in the Fink's Payload, but that part of the content should probably stay there.

Interesting matches. Cena vs. Taker would be a great draw, IMO. Those matches still leave main event talent on the table, which could make for one stacked 'Mania card. Good stuff.

Posted By: GuestyGuest (Guest)  on October 01, 2008 at 04:57 PM

HHH, Kennedy? that would be awful as Trip isnt good enough to carry Kennedy to a good title match.

Cena, Taker could well happen & the crowd reaction will help make that a possible good match.

Jericho, Orton would be cool.

For me though i wanna see Taker v HBK.

Big fan of your work, but Kennedy in a wrestlemania main event? I don't like Orton-Y2J being held so quickly after their last match, but if they switch roles then it could work

Posted By: Csonkaholic. (Guest)  on October 01, 2008 at 05:00 PM

What the hell are you smoking? None of those matches are remotely feasible, at least not for a WM, which is supposed to be the biggest event of the year.

Orton v. Jericho? That would be an appealing match for a minor PPV, but in terms of being a big WM encounter, this would go over like a lead balloon. You don't have heel/heel matches headline any PPV, let alone the biggest one of the year. They would have to turn one of them face to make this match work, and both guys are in a great heel groove right now.

HHH v. Kennedy? Kennedy has never been anything but a midcarder. Yes, he has potential, but it's still too untapped to give him a WM title match. Every time he gets pushed up the card, Kennedy gets injured, suspended, or external events kill the main angle he is being pushed under.

Cena v. UT would be the only one that would be worthy of WM, if only because it hasn't been done before (at least not since Cena's early run). It would be a good match of the past v. present. The main problem I see would be that a Cena victory would break the streak, which should go to a wrestler who can use the boost.

i've been hearing alot of talk about how good wrestlemania can be with a the talent they now have and alot of talent should be healty by the time mania comes around . it just shows how effective the brand extension has been cuz with out it how many stars would there really be considered stars with out the brand split this just shows that vince does know whats he's doing . no matter how many complain about the brand split vince continue thw split so we can have a star studded mania every yr.

I am hoping for Hogan and Warrior to have another great rematch at Wrestlemania, but only if they don't have the match in the WWE.

I also hope to get a TV so that I can watch it when its released on VHS.

I actually do see 'Taker/Cena happening at next year's big one; I just can't explain why. I know it's not as likely as Cena/Batista. I don't, however, see WWE putting their 'Mania-main-event eggs in Kennedy's basket at this point. The guy just seems cursed, or maybe just incredibly clumsy. It'll be HHH/Edge for the WWE Title at WM25, which is why it pissed me off when they wasted this great main event on a half-assed, one-match program earlier this summer. That nothin-going-on angle made the tepid Cena/Batista SummerSlam feud look like frickin Jericho/Michaels... What, too many analogies?

WWE Championship: Triple H vs. CM Punk. The high class man who has all the backstage power vs. The tattooed straight edge punk that always had to work for everything. Have Triple H successfully defend the World Heavyweight Championship against I don't know, the Undertaker at The Royal Rumble due to Shawn Michaels and the next night have him gloat and brag that he beat The Undertaker single handedly with all his skill(even though Michaels helped) and then have him go on and on about his wealth and how powerful his is. The brings out Punk, who won the Royal Rumble the night before, who tells Triple H good for him, you beat a legend with the help of another man and dirty tactics. While you were cheating your self to another win I had to work hard and beat 29 other men in the Rumble, just like how I had to work all my life just to make it to ECW, to the ECW title, then to win Money in the Bank last year, the World Heavyweight Championship in June and now finally the Rumble, I put it all in on the line, everything I worked for just to try and make it in the WWE. While you had the World Championship HANDED to you years ago I was busting my ASS off, trying to make a name for my self, when you needed Evolution to protect you I was working my way up in the minor leagues. You are nothing but a arrogant man who had to work for nothing, who had to marry the bosses daughter to get where you are. My name is CM Punk, I'm straight edge and I'm better than you! This leads to weeks of promos and tag matches between HBK/HHH and CM/UT leading to a fatal four way at No Way Out. At Mania we finally see Punk prove he is indeed the better man than Triple H and defeats him with the Pepsi Plunge~!

Interpromotional Match: Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker. Doesn't need much explaining, Michaels cost Undertaker the WWE Championship at the Rumble and leads to their epic match at the 25th Wrestlemania in their home state of Texas, where Undertaker improves his Mania record to 17-0 in the 5 star classic. After the match Undertaker and Shawn Michales do the sit up/kip up, stare each other down then shake hands to close the show

John Cena vs. The Rock. After returning from injury, Cena goes on a spree of wins, defeating every challenge against him andturning into this cocky tweener who claims to beaten everyone worthy in the WWE. Jericho? Check. I got him fired a few years ago. Micheals? Yup, beat him at Mania 23. Triple H, Edge? Huh, Smackdown is just as easy. Beat them. So who does this leave left? Undertaker? Nah, that old bag of bones is busy with Michaels right now. Batista?Who cares, hes a waste of time. I could go for the title but I don't need it, I am the KING of sports enterta... "IF YOU SMELLLLLLLLLL". You can imagine the rest, I'm out of comment space to finish

I wouldn't pay to watch Mania25 w those 3 matches headlining... Cena-Undertaker would be interesting but there's no reason for it. the other 2 matches are just bad ideas, I think you intentionally made them bad ideas to fire people up.

Posted By: theHomewrecker! (Guest)  on October 01, 2008 at 07:39 PM

On your mania matches...there are a few HUGE FLAWS

1)Is HHH really going to hold the belt for a year? And even if moreso, is the HHH-Kennedy really the best matchup you can use for the WWEHT? Moreover, Kennedy is a blip on the Heel Radar right now...honestly, with HHH being Face for the better part of the last three years, that if he is still holding the title, he'll eventually turn heel and maybe HHH-Taker, a matchup we havent seen since 2002?

On the raw side, i feel like this one is a no-brainer...Punk-Orton seems like the plausible mania Raw match imo since they are laying the seeds now and it will be a really slow burn...

This opens up the card to do Cena-Batista II, a money in the bank style match with most of the signature competitors, and a bevy of other strong matches that would be needed for the (assumed) loaded wm25 card.

Posted By: Brutal (Guest)  on October 01, 2008 at 07:42 PM

To clear a few things up:

-Orton will be facing the champion or will be the champion in the Raw WM main event, I'm 99% sure of that.

-I didn't say I would "pay" to see Kennedy in a main event. I think the guy is unreliable and overrated. What I'm saying is that this is the biggest match that SmackDown hasn't seen yet. Isn't 'Mania suppose to feature some new, unseen, big matches?

-And Taker/Cena... some of you are saying it doesn't make sense. Well 6 months before hand we didn't all predict HBK-Angle or Batista-Umaga or Lashley-Umaga, I'm just saying these two having nothing big going on right now and this match could be EPIC!!! Like the Faith No More song.

Thanks for all the feedback y'all.

Nice WM XXV Card.............

FOR ME TO POOP ON!

Also messed up in my first post I said "Have Triple H successfully defend the World Heavyweight Championship" instead of WWE Championship

Posted By: Jones (Guest)  on October 01, 2008 at 08:40 PM

This Column was kinda...
I'd love to see a heel/heel match, but not at WM.
I'd have Hardy vs HHH for the WWE Title with Hardy finally going over.
Batista vs Cena in the Rubber Match. Cena would have a match with Batista at another PPV and pick up the win. They could make this for the World Title.

Long as the Undertaker does not lose.

Kennedy's not going anywhere, especially Wrestlemania.

They better give us Austin vs Hogan, or at least let Austin come out and beat the shit out of Hogan for real.

How about Undertaker vs. HBK? The Streak vs. the Showstopper! That's the match I'd like to see!

you are definitely right, cena vs taker would be a HUGE draw BUT call me selfish seeing as these two are my 2nd favorites behind the stinger, I would like to see hbk vs taker. As someone mentioned thier both from texas. Hbk would be going to end another streak as he ended naitch's career last yr. Correct me if i'm wrong, but i think this would be the 1st match at WM

Posted By: cj (Guest)  on October 01, 2008 at 10:46 PM

Punk vs Shawn Michaels or Shawn vs Bourne would be awesome

Posted By: Josh (Guest)  on October 01, 2008 at 11:40 PM

HHH (c) vs Taker at Mania, Face vs Face mega showdown .

Why do you think NOBODY can beat HHH right now while Taker is trading water with mega jobber Show ?

Cause they want to prevent any single interaction between Hunter and The Dead Man plain and simple

HHH vs Taker for the Gold at Mania XXV ?

Bank On It !!!!!

Batista vs RKO for the WWE Title would make WAY MORE SENSE.....

Posted By: Guest#1990 (Guest)  on October 01, 2008 at 11:42 PM

Can't see some of those matches happening. Maybe Taker-Cena, but we all know Cena would lay down for Taker. No reason for him to even jeopardize the streak. He's already hated by grown-ups and adored by youngsters. He'd gain nothing from it.

I'm thinking...

Jeff Hardy v. Edge - WWE Championship (The hell you say? But wait!)

Mysterio v. Y2J - World Heavyweight Championship (Okay, I seriously just pulled this outta my butt. But it could work!)

HBK v. Taker - Mr. WrestleMania v. The WrestleMania Streak

Cena v. Batista - The Epic Rematch

Austin v. Punk - Stone Cold v. Straight Edge!

Triple H v. Orton - End of an Age (AKA Loser Leaves Town, AKA Triple H loses and takes a break)

Matt Hardy wins $itB, and cashes it in against Edge at the end of the show after Edge beats Jeff in the main event

Sam!

Undertaker vs. Michaels

Cena vs. Batista for World Title

HHH vs. Jericho (Rumble Winner) for WWE Championship

I'm not sold Orton will be in the title hunt. He's been in several Wrestlemania title matches and he has really drawn, what would make this any different?

Everyone wants to see HBK and Taker, and since Taker is nearing the twilight of his career and by Wrestlemania 26 he'll be looking to pack it in, this may be the last chance to see this match with both these guys at (close to) 100%

Cena and Batista is more or less a no brainer. Anyone who thinks The Rock is going to wrestle is crazy as Disney is not going to risk their insurance policy on the guy to help out WWE, they're trying to create a whole new image for him, so count that right out.

And HHH vs. Jericho seems very obvious too, that could be one of the moniest feuds I can think of. Jericho's character is one of the best heels in the business right now, which is the hypocritical guy who thinks the business owes him everything. HHH is the best face (especially after the feud he's had with HBK) to counter that as a guy who's been champion eleven times and done it all.

HHH can call Jericho that wannabe who will never reach his heights, Jericho can call HHH the kiss ass who only is where he is because of the bosses daughter. It can get very real and very personal. They've already planted the seeds for it, they just need to pull the trigger.

Cena vs JBL vs Batista vs Orton vs Jericho vs Big Show vs HHH vs Kane in an epic 8 Way Overbooked Texas Kick Punch Death Match where the winner will receive new tattoos and have the sound level of their entrance music increased with additional bigger pyros (I would really be pulling for Batista in this one)

Posted By: jasonel (Guest)  on October 02, 2008 at 02:07 AM

I'm surprised there was only one Stone Cold mention here. Personally, the big matches I would have are as follows:

Stone Cold vs. HBK, a great Wrestlemania rematch, plus if Austin is truly up for one more, who better than his first big title win opponent, and a guy who could probably carry even me to a great match lol. This also doesn't need a heel, as both especially in Texas would be super over, and this could rival last year's Michaels/Flair classic.

WWE Title: HHH (C) vs. Undertaker, Hell in the Cell. Turn Hunter heel, and this is the guy to do it for. I hope he doesn't end the streak, but as the previous Wrestlemania encounter proved, they are great together in the ring. Maybe a rumble setup here?

World Title: Randy Orton (C) vs. Jeff Hardy, vs. Chris Jericho, vs. Edge A very easy setup here with the Rumble being the catalyst for an awesome match across the brands. The wrestlers here other than Orton are interchangeable, and somebody may be hotter by then, but I like the multi-man match for one of the belt matches.

WHC: Orton vs. Batista
WWE Title: Edge vs. Jeff Hardy

Rock/Cena was a litte out there so I will make an actual card that could actually happen

Interpromotional Match: Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker

WWE Championship: Triple H (C) vs. CM Punk (Rumble Winner)

World Heavyweight Championship: Batista (C) vs. John Cena vs. Randy Orton (Really didn't want to put him in here, but who else is there for Orton to wrestle? Kane? No thanks)

Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio

Edge vs. Mr. Kennedy

Money in the Bank Ladder Match: Jeff Hardy vs. MVP vs. Shelton Benjamin vs. THE Brian Kendrick vs. John Morrison vs. Evan Bourne vs. Paul London vs. Matt Hardy

Big Show vs. Umaga

Some useless Diva crap

EPIC WIN FOR JASONEL !!!!!

The notion of HBK/Undertaker at WM25 seems so simple and so good, that I cannot actually conceive either man doing something else (unless one gets injured.)

But as it goes, I'd love to see Taker take the gold at WM for a third year running. Plus this time, we may get a reign that last longer than 6 weeks.

I'm also happy that now, there is a chance that THE Brian Kendrick may get on the WM card. It would only be MITB, but it's Wrestlemania nonetheless.

I'd give anything for a HBK/Taker Interpromotional fued going into 'Mania, I've been wanting to see this match since Shawn came back.

They've got the perfect storyline: Undertaker injured HBK's back and forced him to take over 4 years off, HBK wants retribution, Taker says it was nothing personal and that this is the wrestling business, people get hurt all the time, this shit writes itself and I can't believe they've not done anything with it since HBK came back 5 years ago.

I thought they were gonna do it a couple of years back when they teased it at The Rumble but it never went anywhere, plus with Mania XXV being it Texas and both Shawn & Taker are texas guys.
Like I said, this shit writes itself and I'd give pretty much anything (within reason) to see it.

This is why smarks should never be allowed to actually book wrestling.

i do agree with michaels vs taker instead of taker vs cena. kennedy probrably wont make it to wrestlemania much to my dismay, and trips will probably face edge. kudos to everyone that bourne in the mitb, i would love to see him win that and pull an edge on anyone winning a major belt this year, that would be fine with me.

You know what's funny about Triple H at Wrestlemania? I'm pretty sure he's up there in the record books for most world title matches at Wrestlemania (probably beaten by Hogan)with 7 matches (4 for the WWE, 3 for the World Heavyweight), and in terms of appearances in a row (12). But the one Wrestlemania he's not in - 23 - has the best Wrestlemania and PPV buyrate. and one of the ones where he's not in the world title match (17) is praised as the best Wrestlemania ever! Probably just a coincidence and doesn't mean anything but still food for thought hey?
