The Wrestling Bard 11.01.08: Monster's Ball
Posted by Aaron Hubbard on 11.01.2008

This is the Wrestling Bard, otherwise known as Hell for Velvet Sky Haters, according to the esteemed Chris Lansdell. That's right, I finally figured out how to do links, so I'm going to give a shout out to some of the guys I've been neglecting.

J.D. Dunn reviews Chi-Town Rumble, featuring the first of the Holy Trinity of Wrestling Matches.

Jeff Small has one of the most entertaining news reports in a while. But he still loves Khali, so you might want to skip that one.

Samuel Berman makes a rare appearance on 411 to discuss Gabe Sapolsky's departure from Ring of Honor.

Mike Chin discusses the Importance of the Spin the Wheel, Make the Deal Match, and reminds me how much I love Raw Roulette.

The Boss reviews Cyber Sunday.

Michael Weyer discusess World Entertaining Entertainment and provides links to almost everyone else.

And Daniel Wilcox discusses the art of being a heel.

*Links to Saturday columns will be posted as soon as they are up.

I myself will be discussing the art of being a heel...except I'm not discussing the Edges, Ortons and Jerichos of the world. Instead, I'll be discussing the Monster Heels. Hopefully, the spirit of Halloween is still with you and this will fit my mood as I post it on the day of Halloween. But first, something really scary:

The Goliath Concept

In my second column, I briefly touched on the concept of Davids and Goliaths in wrestling history. But mostly, it was to describe the juggernaut/Samson role of "good" monsters, like Undertaker. This week, I give love to some wrestlers on the evil side of that gimmick, those that fit the Goliath archetype of nearly unbeatable monster. Monsters are not given much love in the IWC. Most see them as just generic big men. While some wrestlers (coughBatistacough) are really just generic big men with absolutely nothing special about them, it takes a special wrestler to take a monster character and make it work. An effective monster is always over witht the fans and perceived as a potential threat. But who is the best Goliath in wrestling right now? I've narrowed the field down to the five that I enjoy the most, and since it's nearly election day, I'll let the readers practice their right to vote for the best monster in wrestling today.

Candidate 1: "The Monster" Abyss

Pros: Well, his nickname is "The Monster". While some in TNA go overboard by calling him the "Best Big Man in the Business", I won't deny that Abyss is up there. The Masked Monster has a work ethic that very few his size have, and overcomes the odds to have entertaining matches. Abyss is also just flat scary. His massive size and roaring is bad enough, but the fact that he has no regard for his personal safety is at once awe inspiring and also terrifying. More than anyone else on this list, Abyss is willing to become very violent in order to accomplish his goals. For a man that was once labeled as a lame Kane rip-off, he has managed to make a nice niche for himself.

Cons: Abyss does not have a very good win-loss record. Although he is more cerebral than he looks, he also suffers from tunnel vision. When he gets focused on a strategy, he will just keep doing it, and often, his opponents will find a way to use that against him. He's just not flexible enough to form new strategies and is often outsmarted. Abyss is at his most dangerous when he is unleashed and allowed to wreak havoc, but he is at his most effective when at the command of a manager.

Candidate 2: The Boogeyman

Pros: The Boogeyman is quite possibly the strangest wrestler to ever, um, grace the rings of WWE. From his bizarre entrance with the orange smoke to the nursery rhyme promos to the crazy toothless grin to the worms, Boogeyman is just...creepy. His ability to pop out of nowhere is something that must make every WWE Superstar feel a little uncomfortable. And did I mention the worms?

Cons: As creepy as the Boogeyman is, he appears too infrequently to be relevant, and on the rare occasion where he does show up, it is usually as comedic relief. How can you take a monster seriously when all he does is make you laugh? The Little Boogeyman doesn't help his monster image. Boogeyman comes across more as a Mad TV Character than someone who hides under the bed. His inability to have a good match won't do him any favors either.

Candidate 3: The Great Khali

Pros: The Great Khali is a very imposing person. Standing well over seven feet tall, one can't help but look up to the guy. And unlike most giants, Khali comes in at a lean 420 pounds, and has an impressive muscular physique to go along with his massive height. His incoherent babbling and growling might not be the best promo, but its effective at getting the point across. Khali's offense is bowling shoe ugly, but it is effective, as he once beat the Undertaker clean in under five minutes. That just doesn't happen, but Khali did it. The fact that he accidently killed a man in training (largely due to the other guy's mistake) doesn't help him in the cute and cuddly department.

Cons: Obviously, the biggest complaint about Khali is his in-ring work. To turn things around, Khali's offense, though effective, is bowling shoe ugly. He is very limited in what he can do, and many wrestlers, like Undertaker, John Cena, and Batista have solved the puzzle, which kind of takes away from his aura of invincibility. But perhaps the most shocking is that Khali doesn't seem to be a monster at all. Just because we can't understand Khali doesn't mean that he isn't a kind soul. He's just confused and misguided. His humorous escapades with DX, McMahon's phone, and the Kiss Cam have all worked to make Khali seem more human. And if you read Jeff Small, you get a whole bunch of stories that remind us that Khali is just a normal seven-foot guy, and not a monster.

Candidate 4: Kane

Pros: Amid this collection of freaks and lumbering hulks, Kane stands alone as the most evil of them all. This pyromaniac has set everything from Jim Ross to his own parents graves ablaze, and has even gone so far as to attack a helpless Linda McMahon. He has buried his own brother alive and put countless people in the hospital. He was intimidating enough with the mask, but once we saw his face and got to hear his voice, it became even more apparant how sick and twisted Kane truly is. A giant of a man who possesses athleticism akin to his half brother, Kane is every bit as dangerous inside the ring as he is outside of it. Plus, he has experience playing the monster Jacob Goodnight in See No Evil. That has to count for something.

Cons: Kane is several years past his best days in the ring, and many feel he has grown stale. And as we get more glimpses at the man behind the mask, Kane is less of an unstoppable monster and more like a sadistic, cerebral menace. Kane has also tried to connect with his human side on a few occasions, and has even been known to make a joke or two. Out of all of these men, Kane has shown to be the most human, but has also done the most inhuman things of the lot. Does it balance out?

Candidate 5: "The Samoan Bulldozer" Umaga

Pros: Who would have thought that a Samoan Savage would be relavent in the twenty-first century? Despite critics bashing him for the first several months, Umaga got over very quickly and is feared by nearly everyone. Combining ruthless agression and deceptive intelligence with an appetite for destruction, Umaga may be the human equivalant of a wrecking ball. Umaga knows how to systematically break his opponents down. He's big, fast, agile, strong, smart, and has no conscience. George Bush might not have the best of luck, but Vince McMahon has found a REAL Weapon of Mass Destruction.

Cons: Three words: Triple H burial. No matter how much credibility you build as a monster, a feud with Triple H will always take that cred and crush it. If Umaga had won a single PPV match against the game, it might have been different, but we know that was not to be. The Samoan Bulldozer has been running on fumes since then, and one has to wonder if the fans will embrace him upon his eventual return.

So, who is the best monster in the business? Cast your vote via e-mail or the comments section.

Ask Aaron

Unfortunately, nobody was too interested in this, except for a certain ecwfan . He wanted to know my thoughts on the Guantlet Match two weeks ago on RAW. The best way to some up my thoughts is that I'd prefer not to think of it. It was a disaster. The rules made no sense and it made the Champion look weak, as well as the three opponents. Probably the worst Main Event of the Year. And though I can't picture it winning due to some other "gems" of WrestleCrap (Rats on Poles anyone?), I'm sure it will get a few votes in the Worst Match of the Year category on 411 Wrestling.

If anyone else wants to hear my opinion on anything, shoot it out. Just remember, no politics, no faith/religion, and no Chris Benoit. That is for the best, trust me.

And if you are wondering what you should be for Halloween next year, Elmo seems to have good luck.

And now, just because I'm a nice guy, let's start November off on the right track with a classic match featuring two pioneers of the X-Division in TNA. Although, it's from Japan, so some people will hate it on principle.

November is my favorite month of the year, so everybody have a good one! And remember, whether you prefer Obama or McCain, get out and practice your God-given right to vote in three days!

KANE

Khali, Umaga, and Boogeyman are all laughable. Kane is pretty good in his monster role, but Abyss takes the cake IMO.
See Abyss' arms? Totally scarred up from all sorts of cage and barb wire matches.

Not hating on the match because it's from Japan (and it was an AWESOME youtube find), bit I hope that by "classic" you meant "old".

The match didn't flow as well as previous matches I've seen from AJ and Low Ki.

UNDERTAKER..

Hornswoggle is creepy
why didn't they do a monster mash battle royal like they did the last year or so?, I thought that was kinda fun... gave the monsters something to do, & it was a gimmick match unto itself...

Kane.

As stated, Khali isn't a monster. He's just tall and strong, and his recent segments have shown that while monstrous in size, his personality is quite human. Umaga comes in second place after Kane. He's a strong, fast savage who mows down opponents. He does need a mouthpiece for plot development, though. Otherwise he's just a wild Samoan. The Boogeyman isn't a monster because he's never come across as a 'bad guy'. In a way, he's WWE's version of ECW's 911, turning a crappy segment entertaining by demolishing lamers. Abyss has always felt to me like an offshoot of Kane. The mask, the silence up to recently, and even now he sounds like Kane did behind the mask. He even has his own convoluted family background. Recently, he's lost his monster mystique due to his unwillingness to use extreme force and his desire to be "Chris Parks."

Kane also seems to have a conscience somewhere and at times he's tried to fit in(just before he lost his mask). More often than not, however, he seems to enjoy causing as much damage and destruction as possible. Even without his mask, Kane continues to be a great monster in his psychotic promos and vicious acts.

Umaga by far. Not only is he the best in the ring of the bunch, but he's the most intimidating. Abyss has gone from a gimp to a masochist to... I don't really know WHAT his problem is right now. He doesn't WANT to use weapons for some reason? Boogeyman is just lame in all aspects. Khali can't wrestle worth shit and he doesn't do much to get over besides stand there and be taller than everyone. Kane was a million times better monster in 1998. Umaga might have been buried by Triple H but seriously, what upper midcarder/main eventer hasn't besides Cena, Taker, and Batista? Umaga serves his purpose of being a Jobber to the Stars while maintaining his monster heat because he's so fierce and impactful with his moves. A lot of monsters/giants are way too fucking slow even with their arm movements, but Umaga moves a LOT faster in all areas.

So yeah, Umaga. Hopefully he gets back soon.

I don't consider anything from this century "old".

To me, the match was ****1/2. I haven't seen any other AJ/Low Ki match off the top of my head, although I know they've had some classics in ROH.

Umaga is a close runner-up though.

I can understand leaving 'Taker off the list since you said you were going with "Goliath" characters, so how do faces Abyss and Boogeyman count? I can't imagine crowds in Biblical times popping for Goliath, even if he ate worms or used flaming tables.

It would be nice to see other true monster heels on the ballot instead; like Big Show, Awesome Kong, or even Tomko & Giant Bernard.

Posted By: ? (Guest)  on November 01, 2008 at 07:04 AM

I'd give it to Kane just for 1997/1998 alone, but for consistency over a period of time i'd go for Abyss.

Posted By: Guest (Guest)  on November 01, 2008 at 08:06 AM

Great match, more of this in the column please!

I have to vote for Abyss as the best monster. I like the storyline and how they build up his internal conflict, it makes you actually interested in the person more than just what he does in the ring.

Posted By: Ryder (Guest)  on November 01, 2008 at 09:01 AM

How could you leave off Undertaker? Clearly a man who is supposed to be "dead" in his gimmick is a monster.

Posted By: Roman (Guest)  on November 01, 2008 at 10:31 AM

Quite surprised you didn't unprofessionally bury one of your colleagues articles like you did to the Whacky Wrestling Theory. Jackass.

As for the question, does it matter? Its all fake anyway.

Posted By: Guest#0206 (Guest)  on November 01, 2008 at 10:53 AM

I don't think that Batista is a generic big man with nothing special. Any wrestler that can "solve the Khali puzzle" has at least that. At any rate, at least I got to see some Beast Wars. Thanks!

Posted By: The Great Capt. Smooth (Guest)  on November 01, 2008 at 11:02 AM

Write in vote for Awesome Kong.

For that matter, why not Hornswaggle (a leprechaun), Rhino (a war machine/man-beast) or Shark Boy? C'mon, he's a were-shark!

Honorable mention should go to Big Daddy V's man-boobs and Braden Walker/Chris Harris -- for butchering his chances at a run in the WWE.

And I understand The Undertaker is not in it because, as a 'monster', he trumps all.

Posted By: trueindeed (Guest)  on November 01, 2008 at 11:26 AM

Umaga, Period.

Posted By: Guest#2467 (Guest)  on November 01, 2008 at 11:42 AM

I still have to give the edge to Kane for a body of work.

TNA needs to get Abyss out of his current persona as he is not really much of a monster at all right now. I like him a lot but he needs to get back over as a monster. Once they start the eventual feud with Morgan it should be great.

Umaga is a close third, I really wish they would give him a manager/mouthpiece again. The savage gimmick fails when he makes all of his own decisions

Bogeyman and Khali just don't really rate. Khali is a giant (Bog John Studd, Big Show, etc)
And the bogeyman is much more of a comic horror for the kiddies character than a Monster.

"God-given" right to vote? Have you finally lost your damn mind? As a white male over 18 years old, God didn't give me that right, the Founding Fathers did. Alternatively, if I were an African-American I would say Abraham Lincoln gave me the right to vote, and if I were a woman I would say Woodrow Wilson and Congress did the same.

Look, I'm not insulting your religion, but as a (almost finished) law student I found your comment to be pretty damned insulting. Certain people in this country had to fight long and hard for the right to vote. It didn't just spring up out of the blue as a gift from God.

P.S. Since you just went to college this year, I take it you're between the ages of 18-20, right? So the 26th Amendment gives you the right to vote. Not God.

Order of best monsters on this list:
1) Kane
2) Abyss
3) Boogeyman
4) Umaga
5) Khali

I gotta go with Kane.

Since you need a question, what is the worst match you've ever seen? How about worst wrestler/character? Worst angle/story?

!!!!I hope you never pass your fake internet bar exam at the Phoenix Institute. I know who you are MP. A 34 year old white male that had problems in their 20's and is now trying to make a comeback that will never happen. So go back to whacking off to ROH tapes and wishing for the days of NWO and SCSA and the ROCK to return for just one historic night only to end up with another unsatisfied look from your blow up doll.

Gotta go with Kane on this one. Though I'd place Umaga at the #2 spot, with Abyss behind him, and Khali/Boogeyman tied for the bottom spot.

To MP,(The REAL One),

I am sorry that offended you. Where I'm coming from, all good things come from God, but you may thank whoever you feel like without offending me. This was not to take away from the sacrifices of people who fought the good fight. I'm thankful God put me here in America where I have the right to vote. As a wise man once said, "You will find that many truths depend greatly on your point of view."

And good luck finishing the law degree.

To everyone else:

The Boogeyman is intended as a joke.

Honestly, I really appreciate the sacrifices made for people of certain races or gender's 2 vote & such & it was great back then but in this day & age I think people should have 2 pass a test before they vote. There are 2 many uneducated people (of all races & genders) voting based upon false beliefs. The test should quiz you on the certain policies of each candidate & you should at least understand their job a lil. I have seen 2 many fools vote for each candidate under false pretenses this year. I could care less who you’re for but I expect those who vote 2 understand who they’re voting for & have a good reason. That means voting for a white guy because he’s white or a black guy (who is more white than anything) because he’s black or a party because you’re a woman & that party has a woman running as VP is UNACCEPTABLE! I’ve seen all 3 of those types of people & they really pi$$ me off! It’s a shame people can’t vote in a grown up manner! When will we ALL grow up!

Anyway, ranting aside, great job Hubbard! Hope all is well! Have a great week!

PEACE!

hey BOMB
who conducts the tests or deems whether one has a good enough reason or "smart level" qualifications to vote?
who sets the bar?
a man who can't read can't vote?
a man in backwater bum-screw can't vote?
everyone needs the same level of education & understanding to vote?
"you have seen 2 many fools"? -- my father would think you write like an idiot. if it were my father & other good men like him conducting the test, would that be fair? rant all you want, smart people as well as dumb ones do all the time, I know i would never want you to judge me when it comes to what i want for this country, and if i don't want a fool like you judging me, why would I want the government or whoever you think should give this test.
it's nice to know you know better though, but if you're so smart I hate to break this to you but:

THIS IS THE WRESTLING SECTION ON 411!! i think you were looking for the polotics section...
jeez, i hope you're not giving the test
& Hubbard, get off his dick, he didn't say anything profound or insightful, you sheep-man, you BAHHHH!

PEACE OUT!!!!!!

All of this monsters out of his shape (with exception of Khali) and past their prime. If Abyss drop some weight and gets better win/lose record, he can have brighter future of them all. Because most of monsters in WWE already get buried by Triple H, John Cena and some other WWE main-eventers.

Posted By: L'Mago (Guest)  on November 02, 2008 at 06:49 AM

Kane of the current monsters. But that is not saying much, now there are more gray areas, and monsters are harder to define than say in 1998 or so. I would have to say the Undertaker of 1999 is the best monster ever though.

"I would have to say the Undertaker of 1999 is the best monster ever though."

Uhhhhhh, based on WHAT criteria exactly? Were you watching back in 1999? I have nothing against the Undertaker, personally or professionally, but he was the most boring character on television in 1999. That injury towards the end of the year and his repackaging as BikerTaker in 2000 basically saved his career.

Jake, you can enjoy all of that silly Ministry stuff if that's really your bag, more power to you...but WHY???

Hey Axolotl you aren’t as smart as you think u & your daddy are. I would expect someone who calls me a fool 2 at least have a somewhat difficult question for me 2 answer.

“who conducts the tests or deems whether one has a good enough reason or "smart level" qualifications to vote?”

U can’t deem whether they have a good enough reason 2 vote but u can discourage those who know nothing about the candidates & are voting based upon race from voting at all. If u don’t know what ur talking about or are voting for race only then u most likely won’t take the time 2 find out the real politics & thus won‘t vote because of the test. The test would be 2 filter out the racists & those who have no idea about politics. Smart level? I never said they had 2 be rocket scientists or even pass high school. I said they had 2 NOT be ignorant of the POLICIES of a candidate. Why shouldn’t you have 2 understand the policies 2 vote? If I vote for McCain because I think Obama will be taking money out of my pocket 2 “spread the wealth” & his plan would actually be benefiting me than I am IGNORANT of the POLITICS & thus McCain gets a vote because I have no idea what I’m talking about. That makes me a fool! Why is that fair 2 Obama?

“who sets the bar?”

Probably someone who’s been covering politics for years & is educated on the subject. It’s like a teacher. Why do teachers set the bar in school. They went 2 school & studied the field they’re in. Who deems them qualified? Same thing here.

“a man who can't read can't vote?”

Yes he can. Someone can read it 2 him. I believe they call it an Oral exam for those people & their daddys who don‘t know.

“a man in backwater bum-screw can't vote?”

Any man who passes the test can vote. Black, white, Mexican, redneck, big city, whatever.

“everyone needs the same level of education & understanding to vote?”

No they need 2 be educated on POLITICS! They aren’t all required 2 know the same amount. For instance, If we were in high school & If I make a 92 in history class & u make an 82 in history class at the end of the year we both pass. I made a better grade but u made high enough 2 pass as well. The test itself would determine what u know. Anyone who already has the right 2 vote would be allowed 2 take the test. The same rules would apply except that u have 2 pass a test.

“my father would think you write like an idiot.”

What makes u think anyone gives a damn what ur daddy thinks? Speak for yourself not your daddy. I judged no one. I stated facts. Voting because of race is FOOLISH. Why would anyone not racist or just looking 2 pi$$ me off argue?

Posted By: THE BOMB! (Guest)  on November 02, 2008 at 03:45 PM

“if it were my father & other good men like him conducting the test, would that be fair?”

It’s funny. Most of ur logic is that I’m calling myself intelligent. Where do I get off thinking I’m intelligent? Who decides whether or not I’m intelligent? Well I have a question for u: Who decides ur dad is a good man? U? Aren’t u biased? Why is it fair for u 2 decide whether or not ur dad is a good man? See Axolotl 2 can play the dipshit masquerading as a “wise man” game. BTW, Ur logic is off. I never said I’d pass the test. In fact I never said I understood all of the politics or policies. I said voting based upon race is FOOLISH. That’s not judging. That’s FACT!

“rant all you want, smart people as well as dumb ones do all the time”

I couldn’t agree more. U prove the latter.

“I know i would never want you to judge me when it comes to what i want for this country, and if i don't want a fool like you judging me, why would I want the government or whoever you think should give this test.”

First off a question mark goes at the end of a question. I would expect such a smart man with a great daddy 2 know that but maybe I’m just ignorant. There’s a simple answer 2 ur question. Here’s an example: College, high school, & a driving test. What do they all have in common? U have 2 take a test 2 pass. What qualifies these people 2 be giving the test? Usually years of experience in the field they’re teaching. Do I necessarily want them 2 be giving the test? No. Here’s the real question: Do I have a choice? Can I pick the teacher I want 2 give me the test? Isn’t most of school just someone else’s opinion of my work? Why does their opinion count? Why, if I don’t want them judging my work should they be allowed 2? Why is it ok for society 2 say I have 2 pass a test 2 pass school but I don’t have 2 pass a test 2 decide presidency? Isn’t presidency as important if not more important? If my leader isn’t fit for the job doesn’t that hurt everybody? Why should everybody have 2 pay because other people were ignorant on the subject?

“it's nice to know you know better though, but if you're so smart I hate to break this to you but:

THIS IS THE WRESTLING SECTION ON 411!! i think you were looking for the polotics section…”

I hate 2 break it 2 u but it’s spelled politics “wise man” with the great daddy. BTW, MP & Hubbard were talking about politics that’s why I said something. Why should u be concerned with my conversation? Is it because your daddy said so? Why don’t u capitalize the letter I? Why didn’t u capitalize the first word in your sentence? Why should ur daddy judge my writing when his son doesn’t know basic grammar skills?

“Hubbard, get off his dick, he didn't say anything profound or insightful, you sheep-man, you BAHHHH!”

As a fool I probably shouldn’t say anything but if I wasn’t mistaken it would seem you’ve been sucking your daddy pretty hard. Therefore I wouldn’t be talking but as the “wise one” I dare not argue with you! Take care! Love you!

PEACE!

Wow, Easy Bomb, I think you both have points but at the end of the day I could care less about either one of them. the test to vote is pretty stupid, though, hard enough to get people to vote, let alone take a test to do so. Plus you changed the whole dad thing around in a relly bizarre way, I think he meant his dad & his generation might think we all sound like idiots. You kind of turned it into a daddy-loving issue... strange. but like I said, I could care less.
Umaga has been favorite of mine since he arrived to the WWE, but I think his days of being a serious main event threat are sadly gone.

I would have to say Umaga due to the fact that he was never really in a comedic crappy storyline; unlike kane with lita, Khali kiss-cam etc.

Guest#6974-

It is simple, when I was watching in 1999, he was the truly the only monster that would scare anyone. Think about it, you have the Ministry of Darkness basically controlling what is going on and bringing Vinnie Mac to his knees. That is what a monster should be, bringing fear into the strongest of wills.

Granted the storyline turned out to be garbage, but in early 1999 when it had some legs and was excellent the UT was the best monster out there. Really can you think of anyone else who has played a monster role better than the UT or Kane? And Kane was alright and was excellent at the start, but since then he has faded and become just another character. While the UT has transformed numerous times and with the exception of his Biker role, has always been a monster.

From the list, Abyss is the top monster.

Notable write ins are Awesome Kong and Hydra.
