Thoughts From The Top Rope 11.19.08: Spoilin' For A Fight
Posted by Daniel Wilcox on 11.19.2008
In one of the most anticipated matches in recent memory, John Cena and Chris Jericho clash for the World Championship this Sunday. Why is this match so intriguing? Will the "hometown curse" be a factor? Who will come out on top?
Before we enter the main portion of the column, I first want to congratulate WWE on their recent choice of pay-per-view theme songs; they've actually been using some quality artists as opposed to those lame "hard rock" or "nu metal" bands like Saliva. I believe Motorhead's "Rock Out", was the Unforgiven theme, Metallica's awesome "All Nightmare Long" the No Mercy theme, and now we've got AC/DC's "Spoilin' For A Fight" used for Survivor Series. Long may this trend continue.
Speaking of spoilin' for a fight, we've all seen the adverts, heard the promos and watched the vignettes – John Cena makes his return this Sunday at the Survivor Series. It seems longer than three months that he's been gone, probably due to the numerous title changes, reshuffling of the main event scene and the fact that even when he was around, he wasn't in the title hunt, instead feuding with JBL for most of the year. And I don't know whether it's the fact we haven't seen John for a while, or the fact that Jericho has been so awesome this year, or that the pair have such an interesting history (which Andy Clark does a great job of chronicling here), but I'm looking forward to this particular main event moreso than any wrestling match in a long time.
Maybe it's because I have no idea who's going to win the thing, or even who I want to win. I am pretty confident in saying that whoever wins this match will go on to defend the championship at WrestleMania, which makes the match even more intriguing. One has to question the confidence the WWE higher-ups have in Jericho. Well I don't think they doubt his ability in the ring or on the mic, and let's face it they'd be mad to, it wouldn't surprise me to hear that they don't have much confidence in him as a guy who can lead a brand as its champion for any sustained period of time.
His original run as WCW Champion in 2001 was short-lived, eight days to be precise. His second run took him to a Mania main event, but that run really made him look like a joke. Hell, the feud he had going into Mania was more about Triple H and Stephanie McMahon than it was him. After dropping the title at Mania, it was just a matter of months before he was curtain-jerking and challenging for tag titles again. And that's the way it would be for Jericho for the next few years, always on the cusp of the main event but never really being a serious contender in the eyes of the fans. Indeed, when he returned last year the majority of the knowledgeable IWC remarked that he wouldn't get near the World Championship, and despite his amazing work this year, when he did become champion again, I think we were all a little shocked, and not just because of the manner in which he won the title.
When Jericho dropped the title to Batista at Cyber Sunday, it seemed as though Jericho's title reign had merely been a brief reward for his hard work this year, or maybe even just a way of getting a Ladder match out of the Michaels/Jericho feud. This of course made us even more surprised when Jericho recaptured the gold in that Steel Cage match a few weeks back. But does this mean WWE is finally giving the ball to Jericho? Was Batista's reign just to get him to stop whining? Did they pull the title switch to hold off on Batista/Cena II?
One intangible going into this match is the Boston factor. I'm sure by now we're all familiar with the dreaded "hometown curse," the idea that when a wrestler works in front of their hometown crowd they inevitably lose their match or are on the receiving end of some sort of beat down. Off the top of my head, Edge, CM Punk, The Hardys, Shawn Michaels and John Cena have all been victims of it in high-profile situations. You have to imagine that WWE does this in order to not find themselves in a situation where people know a person will win a match because they're in their hometown. Unfortunately, people are now pretty sure a guy will lose whenever they're in their hometown. On the other hand, this rule is far from rock solid proof. Batista comes to mind as someone who has been victorious in big matches in his hometown of Washington, DC (Summerslam 2005, Cyber Sunday 2007). And while perhaps being the obvious way to go, there's no denying that seeing someone win a major match or championship in their backyard adds an extra "oomph" to their triumph and creates a memorable moment. But when it comes to John Cena, such a factor may not be of any importance, as there are going to people booing him out the building whether Survivor Series was in Boston or Canada.
And that brings me to one of the things I'm most looking forward to about this match – the crowd reaction. Sometimes a great crowd can make an average match a classic; Rock/Hogan, Cena/Triple H come to mind, and even Jericho and Cena's clash way back at Summerslam 2005, one of the first times an audience was very vocal in their dislike of Cena. History tells us that Boston doesn't much like John Cena – his encounter with Edge their in 2006 made Edge a fan-favourite as Cena was seemingly the anti-Christ. I don't think Boston has a reputation for being a particularly smarky crowd, but there's no doubt there'll be numerous Cena haters there come Sunday, as there is any other night. And the fact that Chris Jericho has been such a tremendous performer in recent months should only add fuel to the fire that is the Boston crowd, as many will be routing for Jericho regardless.
Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee a hot crowd this Sunday, but I think it's a pretty safe bet to say that the in-ring action will deliver. John Cena and Chris Jericho are two of the absolute best in the business right now. Both know how to work a main event style match, both know how to work a crowd and both, Cena included, know how to wrestle. I fully expect both men to be at the top of their game, despite Cena's injury, and I fully expect both men to put on a show. It won't be Flair/Steamboat, and it may not even live up to their match from three years ago, but I'd be surprised if it didn't at least make most people's Match of the Night and completely unsurprised if most considered it a Match of the Year Candidate.
As I mentioned earlier, the outcome is a toss up. While I don't think a loss in his first match back will be a major blow for Cena, I think it would be the kind of booking that would raise a few eyebrows as jobbing a guy out in such a way isn't normal practice. That said, Jericho's only just got the title back and, to use a cliché, the money is in the chase. I'd love to see Jericho retain and hold onto the gold all the way until WrestleMania; his work has earned him the right to be a successful and dominant champion. On the other hand, the mark in me would love to see Cena make Jericho tap like a bitch to the STFU and mark a triumphant comeback with his fourth world title reign. Although, maybe my mark out moment of the night will come from somewhere else, like Jeff Hardy capturing the WWE Championship.
John Cena's return is nothing but good news in my eyes. Cena and Jericho are polar opposites in terms of their wrestling personas and yet they're both so good and what they do it's hard to chose a favourite or a winner between the two. Thankfully, I know that come Sunday night, I shall be entertained regardless of the outcome.
Good column.I agree that the match will be great,it's the match I'm most looking forward to tbh.
The crowd is gonna hot and they're gonna give this match a epic feel whatever they do.Jericho is likely to retain by DQ and Cena will still come out not looking bad at all.

The real question is if Cena wins does that mean there's a WCW Spinner belt on the way? I hear Ted Turner spinning in his grave and that's impressive considering he's still alive...

cena with that big gold belt justb wouldnt look right.
Posted By: phillis (Guest) on November 19, 2008 at 01:58 AM
Cena wouldn't look right with the big belt??? Hell they can give the belt to Michael Cole, so long as I don't have to see Jericho walk out looking like he is wearing nothing but that belt. He needs to put his damn pants back on, because those short trunks make him look queer.

I dislike the Saliva hate
Still, new album out soon, just in time for Wrestlemania as well..... :D

Sorry man,but Cena has not a fucking clue how to wrestle. A guy who only knows 5 moves and how to use them in the same order in every match is someone who is a wrestler only for the money. I dont give a fuck what his return videos say about his "passion" hes a wrestler for the money or he would know more than the same 5 boring moves. Any chance he gets injured Sunday so we dont have to sit through another year-long title reign?

I'm calling it right now. Survivor Series 2008 will deliver two of the greatest title matches in Survivor Series history. I hope they keep up the tweener role in Jeff Hardy long enough to give him the strap. Hell, they can keep it going. Either way, Hardy is still SUPER over. I'm also looking forward to Cena's return match because I want to see if they will do it like Hunter's return match last year at Summerslam.

Tim. every shoot interveiw with people even outside the company talks about his Passion.
since going to TNA Kurt Angle and Ric Flair has said that Cena was super-passionant.
Paul Heyman wrote an article putting over John Cena's devotion.
and also while he's not the best wrestler, he's actually a pretty good brawler. his NoDQ matches are usually damn good. he's not having one now, but I'm just saying.

Hey Boston Cena fans, i dare you to start chanting 'YOU-STILL-GOT-IT' when Cena hits the 5 knuckle shuffle followed by 'THAT-WAS-AWE-SOME'
Posted By: chant (Guest) on November 19, 2008 at 08:51 AM
I'd rather watch Ryan Seacreast snort gun powder! nooooo! I'd rather drank pickle juice from a human skull than watch john cena wrestle! the care factor for john cena is below homeless ppl! Heres a list of things I care more about
1)Half-way eatten candy canes!
2)The elasticity of ace bandages!
3)The amount of tartar build up on willie nelsons teeth!
4)The process of making rail road spikes!
5)The XFL!
..... need I say more!

It's pretty refreshing to have a main event match like this where there is no clear cut idea of who is going to win.
And, it boggles my mind that some people are still so blinded by their Cena hate. You don't like his character, or his promos. Fine. But, how people still think that he's a terrible wrestler is beyond retarded. He's one of the best big match performers wrestling today. He isn't a technical marvel in the ring, but what he does is effective. And, what kind of moron questions his passion. I have never watched Cena sleepwalk through any match. He gives 100% every night.
And, before people start judging, I'm not a Cena fanboy, but I will give respect to someone like Cena who works his ass of every night.

Well wolverine, its a little thing in this business called kayfabe. They just put over Cena in an attempt to mkae the haters like him,and they cant take it because their attempts to make everyone love him are failing. Also,if I see one more fucking "Cena is God" video I may puke.

Yeah this is the only interesting match on the entire card - the rest of it is bland & uninspiring as fuck.
I'm expecting some kind of "shock ending" to the Y2J/Cena match - possibly Batista turning heel and preventing Cena from winning the belt or something.

It's very simple. Cena is the new Hogan. Hogan couldn't wrestle but could draw. Hogan was viewed as a hero. They are doing their best to recreate Hogan with Cena. Not many wrestlers get the push Cena is getting right now. And he isn't even there. He's injured.

''In one of the most anticipated matches in recent memory''? what planet are you living on? Cena vs Jericho has been done

"both, Cena included, know how to wrestle"
I LOL'd long and hard. Even more at the consideration of the match that WILL TAKE PLACE already being a MOTY candidate.
CHAINGANG @ll da wai!

Guest#0012, ur the Exact kinda Mark that statement was aimed at

i have respect for cenas passion and so on but the fact is the guy is not very good at anything apart from maybe the odd match. He"s never gonna be anywhere near a hulk or austin so i dont know why he is being pushed how he is.Sad thing is the fact he is in the main event for the title before he has even returned has put me off buying this ppv.
Posted By: smg7 (Guest) on November 19, 2008 at 06:33 PM
hey hound89, you are all marks. there is no such thing as a smark.
Posted By: supa sta (Guest) on November 19, 2008 at 07:04 PM
Calling it a MOTY is extremely premature, especially after some of the matches we've already got this year. Cena only delivers classic matches on a very irregular basis. Jericho on the otherhand has shown he can do it 3 or 4 times in a row.

I love Cena. He gives the IWC something to strongly bitch/defend about as no one else really garners the same reaction. Opinions on Batista (generally negative) or Jericho (generally positive) never get so heated. However, the statements are always the same:
HATER: CENA ONLY KNOWS 5 MOVES
LOVER: CENA = HOGAN! 5 MOVES BUT HE ENTERTAINS SO WELL
HATER: CENA IS PUSHED DOWN OUR THROATS
LOVER: CENA SELLS MORE THAN WRESTLER X WHO IS LOVED BY IWC
HATER: CENA CANT WRESTLE
LOVER: CENA VS UMAGA, CENA VS JBL (years ago)
etc.
Irony: Heard complaints about Cena getting a title match on his first PPV back. And Jericho's returning PPV match was.....
Posted By: mr_wishart (Guest) on November 19, 2008 at 09:45 PM
Jericho hinted that Cena was going to win when he said that a Cena victory would bring chaos to Raw.
Posted By: Guest#5157 (Guest) on November 19, 2008 at 10:38 PM
good article, although you have too much praise on cena. he knows how to wrestle, but thats it. hes decent
Posted By: Guest#0715 (Guest) on November 19, 2008 at 10:57 PM
I've never liked Cena, he was one of the main reasons I stopped watching the WWE years ago. I might actually get this PPV if I have nothing better to do just so I can say I tried to watch the WWE again. If i like it, alright, if I don't, I gave it a chance.
Plus I want to see how people say Cena is having 4* matches, last I saw he was using the same forumula of getting his ass kicked them coming back with his 5 moves to win. I don't know if its changed but I guess I can find out if his matches are just his opponent working really hard.
I really have the idea in my head that the "less is more" approach to the WWE is so they can put weeks and months worth of cool spots into one match.
