The Wrestling Doctor 12.30.08: Predictions for 2009
Posted by W.S. Thomason on 12.30.2008

THE WRESTLING DOCTOR

THIS WEEK"S PATIENT: PREDICTIONS FOR 2009

One of my favorite features of the old year-end issues of Pro Wrestling Illustrated was the fan predictions for the upcoming year. My favorite prediction of all time was (I believe for 1989) that Abdullah the Butcher would eat Jeff Jarrett. That did not happen (or maybe it did and JJ slid out the back – he was much smaller back then) but maybe some of this stuff will.

WWE

• The WWE will release DVDs of Chris Jericho, Batista, JBL, Ricky Steamboat, Rick Rude, Arn Anderson, a Triple Threat match collection, a Clash of the Champions three-disc set, and the Survivor Series Anthology. My dreams of William Regal and Dean Malenko compilations will once again be dashed against the rocks of Stamford, CT.

• Raven will win the lawsuit arguing that wrestlers are employees, and WWE stock and profits will plummet immediately, making an already challenging financial situation much, much worse. The entertainers wrestlers themselves will not immediately enjoy any benefits from the decision due to numerous appeals.

• The WWE will have to combine Smackdown and ECW into a one-hour show due to falling revenue, rising production and employee staffing costs, and the sudden collapse of My Network TV. The one hour Smackdown show will be taped prior to or after Raw each week (depending on time zone). Both Raw and Smackdown will continue to be distinct brands that tour separately for house shows.

• As a result of the Smackdown / ECW merger, the WWE Title will be unified with the ECW Title; the World and WWE Tag Team Titles will be unified and moved to Smackdown; the Women's and Diva's Titles will be unified and moved to Raw; and the Intercontinental and US Titles will be unified and moved to Raw.

• Triple H, MVP, Mark Henry, and John Morrison will end up on Raw while Matt Hardy, Christian, Kofi Kingston, and The Miz will go to Smackdown:

• The WWE will headline a pay-per-view with an Evolution explosion triple threat: Triple H vs. Randy Orton vs. Batista (probably at Summerslam or Survivor Series, once Batista returns).

• A tag team match or handicap match will be the main event on 41 different Raws in 2009.

• Mickie James will turn out to be Kelly Kelly's love interest. As a result, Kleenex will become a sponsor of Raw.

• JBL and the WWE will amicably part ways at the end of the year. The decision will be largely based on Bradshaw desire to take on more prominent commentary roles on Fox News as a means of preparing for a political career.

• The following talent will be released for a variety of reasons, most notably cost-cutting and token Wellness Policy violations: Mike Knox, Jamie Noble, Cryme Tyme, D-Lo Brown, The Brian Kendrick, R-Truth, Dolph Ziggler, Ricky Ortiz, Paul Burchill, Katie Lea, Eve Torres, Jimmy Wang Yang, Ryan Braddock, Scotty Goldman, Zack Ryder, Curt Hawkins, Bam Neely, The Boogeyman, and Gavin Spears. Kendrick, Burchill, Katie Lea, Knox, Brown, Yang, and Neely will all be picked up by TNA. However, the WWE will continue the tradition of most American corporations and not delete its multitude of redundant executive positions.

• Michael Cole will choke on the word "vintage," while a battery of gastrointestinal tests on Joey Styles will reveal an allergy to the phrase "WWE Universe."

• Umaga will turn face.

• The WWE will sign Christian Cage as rumored, and also Rhino and Velvet Sky away from TNA.

• Chris Jericho will become the General Manger of Raw.

• Partial predictions for Wrestlemania XXV :
World Title: John Cena vs. Randy Orton
WWE Title: Jeff Hardy vs. Triple H vs. Edge vs. Mr. Kennedy
ECW Title: Matt Hardy vs. Christian
Steve Austin vs. Chris Jericho – Chuck Norris will be involved
The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels
Beth Phoenix vs. Santino Marella

TNA

• Jeff Jarrett will win one last World Title in TNA before dropping it to Samoa Joe at Bound for Glory.

• Chris Harris will return to TNA, but will have to swallow some serious pride before getting much attention.

• TNA will release Vince Russo mid-summer after ratings and buy-rates continue to stagnate; it will not help much, however, as the company will not change its business, hiring, and production practices.

• Jeremy Borash will be arrested for underage drinking, even though he is actually 34 years old.

• Gene Snitsky will join TNA and engage in a three-way feud with Matt Morgan and Abyss.

• Sabu will return long enough to participate in the Monster's Ball match at Bound for Glory.

• The second Deuces Wild Tournament will feature an interesting concept where each TNA entrant is randomly paired with a mystery partner who is not revealed until Sacrifice. All excitement will be sucked out of the event after the mystery wrestlers are revealed to be Norman the Lunatic, Tatanka, Luther Reigns, Bob Backlund, Wendell Cooley, Wolfie D (as Slash), Mike Enos, and Bryan Clarke.

• Hernandez will win the X-Division Title.

• Kevin Nash will tear something.

• Kurt Angle will star in Saw VI, German suplexing Jigsaw into a giant running table saw.

• TNA will attempt to engineer an unsuccessful "invasion" of Axxess during the elongated Wrestlemania XXV weekend. The talent will be reluctant to participate and the stunt will end up being another embarrassment. TNA will still air the footage, however.

• RVD will not join TNA, but that fact will not stop readers from posting "RVD!" in the comments section an average of 171 times per TNA-related item.

GENERAL

• The critical success of The Wrestler at the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards will spark a brief Hollywood studio obsession with wrestling, resulting in other wrestling-based works becoming films as well as original scripts. My money is on Buddy Cooper Finds A Way by Neil O'Boyle Connelly being in production by the summer (give it a read).

The Wrestler will also spark a renewed investigative interest in professional wrestling, with several cable news specials claiming to expose the seedy side of the business. No one will care.

• Many wrestling companies will fold, including PWG, WWC, IWA, and at least one major Japanese promotion (maybe New Japan). There will be fewer wrestling companies active at the end of 2009 than at any other time in the television era.

On that positive note – Happy New Year! I'll be off until Jan. 20. See you then.

I was enjoying this until you released THE Brian Kendrick.

That's crossing the line, dude.

You're Insane, you know that. I happen to be on of the WWE's biggest fans, and since 2005, it has changed my life. So you think your predictions for 2009 are correct? You're wrong! The WWE has the biggest worldwide, and I do mean worldwide, fanbase than any other organization in existence today. As far as this lawsuit from Raven, nobody will take it seriously and it'll be dropped in no time flat. So, no revenue plummeting, buddy boy, just straight up excitement through and through.

hilarious column

No offense, but I don't get this column. I think it's serious and then I read something so off the wall it just has to be an attempt at comedy. As soon as I convince myself of that I read something that actually sounds plausible. Back and forth.

Either way, I think this column kind of sucks. If you were being serious a lot of your predictions were pretty stupid. (SD! and ECW combined as a one hour show?) If you were being funny... well... I never so much as chuckled.

I appreciate the effort but... eh. Boring.

I would be interested in hearing how WWE has changed your life.

I like the looks of an Undertaker/Shawn MIchaels WM 25 bout. It'll finally give Undertaker a decent match at the event.

Seriously, has Undertaker ever had a really amazing match at Wrestlemania?

Your crystal ball is a bit smudgy, I see... Some comments, if you don't mind.

- WWE will release DVDs, but of the performers you named, only Jericho, Batista and JBL will get a disc. In addition, there will be a D-X DVD box - and to push it, there will be a "one night only"-reunion of D-X with HHH and Michaels winning all the titles on one night.

- We will see all of one RAW all year long with a one-on-one main event that has a clean finish.

- Kelly Kelly's love interest will be Vince McMahon - leading into a never-before-seen storyline of the McMahon family members fighting one another.

- In a turn that will shock the entire wrestling world, Jarrett will drop the title to a as-of-yet-unnamed b-list celebrity.

- Kevin Nash and Scott Hall will main-event more than one TNA PPV.

- IWAMS will produce a minimum of two 'incidents' (see Levy, Mike) that will lead to the promotion being driven even further to the ground. Shockingly, they will not fold, even though the last show of 2009 will attract all of 2 spectators.

- Kurt Angle will announce that he has signed with a major MMA promotion.

I feel like I'm a kid again, going through the reader-submitted predictions in the back of the year-end issue of Pro Wrestling Illustrated. Yeah, they sucked then too.

Most Optimistic Point in this article: Kennedy main eventing WM25.

Most Pessimistic: Kendrick getting released.

Accidentally Misread awesomeness: For a moment I thought you did Santino/Taker... which would be off the scales of awesome.

Actually, Taker's match with Triple H at WrestleMania XVII is very underrated, and he had a good match with Edge last year. Part of the problem with booking Taker at WrestleMania though is unless it's against John Cena at this point you KNOW there's ZERO CHANCE he's jobbing The Streak.

were there any 2008 predictions from last year we can read to see if they came true?

RVD !!

If the WWE looses their lawsuit to Raven yes they will loose a substantial amount of money it will not have a huge impact on their bottom line since they have so much net money and worth so much. Even if the IRS decided to get some backed taxes from the WWE from years past and I think they will, they won't go further than 10 years and still it wont hurt them considerably in the short run and barely make a blemish in the long run. I hope Raven wins this so that these guys can get properly taken care of this is a good thing.

"• Mickie James will turn out to be Kelly Kelly's love interest. As a result, Kleenex will become a sponsor of Raw."

Fantastic prediction. Impossible to happen though because this is in no way PG. I fully expect divas to begin wearing old school women's wrestling outfits or potato sacks to completely hide any of their sex appeal.

I also anticipate another kids magazine and hopefully some hilarious cross-promotional segments like the old Karate Fighters tournament! Good times are ahead in kiddie WWE land!

Flair, HHH, Orton and actually Diesel were all pretty good Undertaker matches at WM.

Taker/Michaels would probably be better tho.

Still like to see Sting come in at WM claiming he never came to WWe because winning the title wasn't enough... but ending the streak does.

Why can't Wrestling just die already. I don't understand how anyone can even enjoy it anymore. Same old rehashed shit from years ago. Same guys doing the same moves talking the same shit over and over again.

I was a huge fan but relized how blatently rediculous the story lines are.

Glad to see some Wrestlers can leave this stupid joke and make careers working in a sport that isn't pre-determined.

Wrestling died for me when Owen Hart fell because of some gimmick.

Here's for hoping we have a terrible year in Wrestling and Vince finally hangs them up

The weird thing is that I can honestly see alot of what WS wrote coming true. The only thing I would change is I think Kendrick, Ortiz, Zigler, and maybe Cryme Tyme may stick around for awhile. Goldust will get released for the 87988 time.

I think Arn is gonna have to be content being on the 4 Horsemen DVD. I hope we get a tag team DVD, though.

Posted By: JLAJRC (Guest)  on December 30, 2008 at 04:53 PM

Picking up from my last comment, the WWE in 2009 will be even better than 2008. Wrestlemania 25 in Houston could be even bigger than WM 24. You may never know. You even said they would cut talent that totals almost a field for the Royal Rumble match itself. Smackdown & ECW merging? I don't think so. Raven winning the lawsuit? Doubt it. Revenue plummeting? No chance. Besides, Raven and his cronies are trying to get all the money back when he blew it on drugs and alcohol. By the way, if you got something negative to say, don't say it at all. Nobody needs their mind scarred by negativity.

I have to say that I really enjoyed the Deadman's match against Batista at Wrestlemania 23. I was expecting it to be complete rubbish but these guys kicked it up a notch and showed chemisty that would create a long rivalry. I personally felt this should have main-evented Mania and not HBK-Cena.

Not arguing with the snippet of many indy promotions going out of business, but how the fuck is that a positive note?

Considering New Japan is doing the best of all promtions in Japan right now, did you just take a wild guess?

i predict that most of your predictions will be wrong.

HHH will main - event WM and win.

That is all i know.

Well the last bang of both IWA & WWC would have to be the IWA & WWC join forces and launch a IWA vs WWC invasion angle(I hope that will be better than the WWE(F) invasion angle of 2001. But Telemundo here in Puerto Rico would cancel IWA by Late-Summer due to low ratings & WWC gets cancelled by WAPA by Christmas anyway so by the end of 2009 the final event of both companies would be a jam-packed show with a 10-man IWA vs WWC tag team match(winner takes all).
