411 Fact or Fiction 01.01.09: Jericho, Angle, WrestleMania, and More!

Week TWO HUNDRED and ELEVEN features Geoff Eubanks, Lawrence Watson, and discussion of TNA’s improvement in 2008!
Welcome back to another week of 411 Fact or Fiction: Wrestling Edition! This week we have TWO men stepping up to the challenge as 411 Writer Geoff Eubanks and 411 Reader Lawrence Watson step into the 411 Arena to do battle in this week's edition of Fact or Fiction!
And remember to go to TigerFlashGames.com and play addictive, free flash games when you're bored at work, school, or whenever! Ashish made this place because he loves you.
Questions were sent out Monday morning.
If you would like to appear in the column, shoot me an email!
1. Chris Jericho was the "Wrestler of the Year" for 2008.
Geoff Eubanks :FACT. We've actually covered this in Five-Star Conversation with respect to The Slammys. I was clearly in favor of Jericho, but a thoughtful reader named Justin suggested steadfastly that Edge was the man who really came through and shone in 2008, based most notably on his tenure with the WWET, having main-evented WrestleMania and having had a spectacular HitC match with The Undertaker. Furthermore, he downplayed Jericho's contribution to the year in its entirety for his losing efforts at The RUMBLE, NO WAY OUT, WrestleMania, JUDGMENT DAY and NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS, and for not even having been on the card at all for BACKLASH, ONE NIGHT STAND and SUMMERSLAM. Good points all.
However, we ultimately agreed to disagree on this topic because Edge has yet to prove that he can win a world title in a clean and deserving fashion and spent the better part of latter 2008 "in hell", while Y2J was lighting up Monday nights as the company's #1 heel in the year's most spectacular program against Shawn Michaels, evolving to a new level of expertise as he won, not once, but twice the World Title, the second being an unexpected victory over no less than Batista in a cage…without the aid of a cow.
Basically, it comes down to whether one prefers a strong start or a strong finish. It's all about Jericho and I can't wait to see where 2009 takes him.
Lawrence Watson :FACT. Far be it from me to deny it. Chris Jericho has consistently been the most entertaining WWE superstar this year. His angle with Shawn Michaels was a thing of beauty, and every promo Jericho has done since the heel turn has been gold. Jericho has been the highlight of the year for me.
Score:1 for 1!
2. Kurt Angle was completely under-appreciated in 2008.
Geoff Eubanks :FACT. It could be argued that, in the grand scheme, anyone in TNA was under-appreciated in 2008. Since jumping to Orlando, Angle has been seen by millions fewer viewers each week. The casual fan could likely believe him to be retired, but this is a self-cast role for my Olympic Hero. Granted, it was noble, but nobility steeped in egomania, Angle steadfastly believing that his presence in the fledgling franchise would bring it to prominence such that Dixie could look eye-to-eye with Vince. Now that we've failed to see this occur (though certainly not as a result of poor performances by a top-notch roster), we've been witness to Angle adopting a humbler voice out of the ring, some suggesting his intention is to return in prodigal fashion to WWE (for which some in McMahonagement appear to be potentially contingent).
For the nonce, however, Angle's creepy compulsion concerning the MEM mission statement as spokesperson paired with his unwavering, uncanny ability in the ring, which, despite numerous near-career-long injury/retirement scares, makes him a top draw. Yes, in the grand scheme, Angle was under-appreciated in 2008, by virtue of the relatively decreased number of fans seeing him perform, but if you're one of those, it's your own fault.
Lawrence Watson :FACT. Kurt Angle is one of the few things that allow me to sometimes get through a TNA broadcast. His promos and matches are always good, but he's hampered by the promotion he works for, and the stupid storylines he's been given. Kurt Angle himself is completely under-appreciated.
Score:2 for 2!
3. ECW on Sci-Fi was the "Best Weekly Wrestling Show of the Year" for 2008.
Geoff Eubanks :FACT. The only other program consistently offering such solid wrestling was iMPACT!, but considering the company's shift in TV late this year to focus on promos and backstage segments, to say nothing of the manner in which TV matches are gutted for commercial breaks, it's impossible to sway me toward Thursdays in this regard. Yes, Raw and SmackDown! invariably rise to the occasion, but in terms of consistency, WWECW takes this prize. Funny how the show under Vince's umbrella to which he cares the least (remember the heyday of Velocity…?) ends up being the show featuring the most solid wrestling…
Lawrence Watson :FACT. That is of the shows I watch. ECW has hardly ever had an off show. The new commentary team of Todd Grisham and Matt Striker is proving to be one of your more entertaining duos and what really makes ECW the best show this year is the fact that there isn't enough space in the timeslot for a whole lot of "soap"-style storylines, but rather actual wrestling storylines that almost always make sense and provide entertainment. That's what I look for, that's what I want. I really enjoy watching ECW every Tuesday night.
Score:3 for 3!
---SWITCH~!---
4. TNA showed no significant signs of improvement in 2008.
Lawrence Watson :FACT. A thousand times FACT! TNA is actually one of my least favorite promotions to watch. They have a lot of talent on the roster, but none of it ever seems to be used right. Vince Russo's "Crash TV" concept has no place in today's wrestling world, and it makes for stupid storylines, crappy gimmick matches, and a whole lot of nothing thrown at the viewer. They had a chance to step forward with Samoa Joe as champion, but they botched that too. For my money, TNA is like the Cleveland Browns of the wrestling world (You Steelers fans will understand). Just when they seem to be ready to breakthrough they muck it up. Also, TNA will continue to be intolerable with Mike Tenay and especially Don West screaming at the top of their lungs the entire time.
Geoff Eubanks:FICTION. And I say to you poppycock. Although Vince has been half-assing (literally and figuratively in some cases) his Divas for years now, it wasn't until TNA developed and really got serious about their KnockOuts Division this year that Women's wrestling was taken seriously, spearheaded by the incredible Awesome Kong, the advent of the MAIN EVENT MAFIA stands as one of the year's best angles (the jury's still out with respect to how the story will wrap up, but the repercussions stand to build a foundation upon which the company can really expand and grow) and there have also been some pretty smart and forward-thinking business moves, as well. House shows are expanding (even overseas with great success), iMPACT! is now a two-hour program and is available in HD, displaying to the fans that they can keep up with the proverbial Joneses. Prior to the holidays, iMPACT! scored its highest-rated show in the company's history and the franchise continues to draw legendary, name talent in Booker T and Mick Foley.
Yes, it appears as if they lost Christian Cage and it's rumored that Kurt Angle, as I mentioned above, is hungry to return to New York, booking could be more simplified and streamlined, some of the prim donnas on the roster could be told to know their roles and work house shows to potentially increase attendance (and a little promotion for such shows wouldn't hurt, either), but, all in all, the 2009 horizon looks to be quite bright for Dixie and company.
Score:3 for 4!
5. Judging by the current TV, the injury to Batista and the economy, WrestleMania 25 will not exceed 1-million total PPV buys this year.
Lawrence Watson :FACT. As of right now anyway. I'm not yet willing to give WWE the benefit of the doubt, and I'll err on the side of caution. All things seem to indicate that unless some major things happen that bring the hardcore and casual "working class" fans into the fold, it just will not happen.
Geoff Eubanks:FICTION. This is the 25th anniversary of WrestleMania in 2009. One has to consider that Vince, who is decidedly NOT hurting for money, will pull out all the stops to make this year's Grand Daddy of ‘em All a must-see spectacular. We have a LOT of time to develop rivalries and stories, to schmooze some special appearances and to tie in some once-in-a-lifetime moments worthy of the occasion to the HoF, which is rumored to see Steve Austin inducted. There are also rumors whispered of retirements for The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels, which, of course, remain to be seen.
Furthermore, one need only look back to The Great Depression to recognize that, abject poverty notwithstanding, the American public has always found the means to scrape enough cash together for entertainment, for escapism, and for the wrestling fan, escapism is synonymous with WrestleMania.
And if your decision to buy or not to buy WrestleMania hinges on the involvement of Batista, I'm sorry, friend, but you're a pathetic example of a fan.
Score:3 for 5!
6. In 2009, WWE will crown a new World or WWE Champion that has never held the title before.
Lawrence Watson :FACT. Right now I get this gut feeling that Christian will be coming back into the fold, and will at some point get a world title run. If not him, then someone else in the main event cusp in the company. 2008 was a really entertaining year from WWE, and I'm confident they'll give us a new world champion whose never held the title at some point, and you can take that to the bank.
Geoff Eubanks:FICTION. I generally dislike questions of this nature because, really, who can say? If you'd have told me this time last year that Jeff Hardy wouldn't see his first World Title victory until December, I'd have thought you were nuts, as it seemed to be at his fingertips December 2007, so who knows?
However, having a look under the WWE umbrella, it just doesn't seem that there's anyone on the championship horizon who will be ready in the coming calendar year to ascend to the highest place of honor, unless something goes horribly wrong or an angle gets shot gunned, although a lot can happen in a WWE year.
I see Shelton Benjamin, John Morrison and Cody Rhodes all very possibly wearing gold of this stature someday, but not this year. If you'd have asked me this question last year at this time, I'd have possibly suggested Kennedy and MVP, but it doesn't appear as if that's coming down the pike anytime soon. As it stands now, I don't see Hurricane Helms ever rising above UST status, likewise for Mark Henry, Finlay and Chavo Guerrero with the WWECW title. Brian Kendrick stands no chance of holding anything but the Golden Bong award. McMahonagement seem to want to rally behind William Regal, but appear to be just as gun-shy in his regard. I can see big rallies coming in Mike Knox and Dolph Ziggler's regard, but not such push that would see them go all the way to the top in a year. I, too, think Vladimir Kozlov's gotten as close to a world title as he's likely to get and would place the likelihood of wearing the WWECW title in 2009 in much greater likelihood. Too, Umaga, although a consistent performer who can insinuate himself in a main-event program with ease, to score a world title seems improbable, and were he to achieve such an accomplishment, I have a feeling it would be something akin to Kane's 24-hour reign.
There's an off-chance that, once Matt Hardy is revealed as his brother Jeff's attacker, that he could be given a short-lived shot with the belt, simply as a means of antagonism, but if we see anyone rise to such prominence, my money's on Ted DiBiase, as McMahonagement appears to be quite high on him and it's my prediction that once his film wraps, he's going to be gunning for Randy Orton, who could very well be the World Champion by the time he returns.
Score:3 for 6!
Come on back next week for more of 411 Fact or Fiction: Wrestling Edition!
I still dont buy Matt Hardy as a heel, not yet anyways. Christian is the perfect choice to be revealed as Jeff's attacker. Christian costs Jeff the title at the Rumble, setting up HHH/Edge. We know HHH will be in the main event of WM25 one way or another, and a title match with him and Edge would be top-notch. A Christian-Jeff match given a lot of time could be an epic one to help bolster the card. It makes.....sense.

I think Benjamin has the most shot of winning a world championship next year.Especially if he wins Money in the Bank.
Posted By: The Gold Standard (Guest) on January 01, 2009 at 12:29 AM
I don't understand why Batista was a part of the question regarding WrestleMania...I mean I know he's huge with the casual fan but I know that his ability to make a match better, like a lot of other guys in the company, isn't something that I think will hurt the overall buys of the PPV
Posted By: TJD (Guest) on January 01, 2009 at 12:31 AM
Thing is, "Common Sense", if you must have HHH in the main event, Jeff makes more sense as the opponent (and defending champion). There's been a story between the two for over a year now, starting when Jeff beat HHH for the title shot at Armageddon in December '07. Ever since that one "fluke" success, Jeff struggled for an entire year to break through - hampered first by the suspension and then by repeatedly coming up short against the Game in title shot after title shot - and finally, one year later, he achieves it. Jobbing Jeff to Edge at the Rumble would destroy that whole story and replace it with a far less epic one in HHH/Edge, and do material damage to Jeff's ability to draw as a main eventer. I really think they need to sink or swim with Jeff at this point and position HHH as his challenger, have HHH call his title win back "inevitable", then do the job to put Jeff over huge. THAT makes sense.

Batista stunk up Wrestlemania 24 so he won't be missed at 25, he isn't a factor unless he had turned heel before the injury, that would have at least made him tolerable to watch in a fued or fight.
watching a wrestler like well deserved "wrestler of the year" Y2J do his thing and HBK in any fued... you really have to see that Batista blows, he's a crap big-man who is not even up to Mark Henry standards. The gay-machine-gunner gimmick can't save Batista the bland.
as far as a never before champ, Christian would be cool but he needs the WWE build he was on before his role was crushed... if they build that back up, he'd be bigger than what he was in TNA... he was on his way to a Rock following before the E killed his character... I never knew why they did that to him.
So a new champ in '09? hopefully Regal, I hope this IC run is a test to see how effective he is as a heel champ... he was on a roll until he screwed it up, if Jeff Hardy is any indication, Regal's odds just increased!!
Sorry for the spelling errors! it's new year's & i'm drunk..... Happy New Year!!

- True indeed, Y2J is the superstar of the year...but only because Triple H allows it.
- Triple H can main event a P-P-V by himself.

Geoff is totally delusional when it comes to TNA.
Second highest ratings in company history? What was that, a 1.3 instead of the usual 1.1?
The Middle Aged Mafia? Isn't that just a re-hash of Russo's failed Millionaires Club?
Brought in Booker T & Mick Foley? What have those two done for the company in terms of ratings or buy rates? Oh yeah, zero.
House shows are expanding? Oh great, they're not selling out even more arenas!
Most importantly, let's remember that 2008 was the year TNA decided to start running more PPV's back in the Impact Zone, where the fans get in FOR FREE. Why? Because it was better than having to pay more money for another arena and then give away over 70% of the tickets so the place looks full. When was the last time WWE, despite the crappy condition of their product, had over half their attendance brought in via free tickets?
Posted By: Scott B (Guest) on January 01, 2009 at 01:36 AM
I really think you have to answer Fact for the 6th question especially when you consider that that the last year the WWE had where it didn't crown a first time world champion was in 1997. Recent history dictates that it will likely happen again this year.
Posted By: MKick (Guest) on January 01, 2009 at 01:39 AM
I think they can put together a strong WM Card and won't miss Batista...
Cena vs Orton- World Title (Orton wins Rumble)- Crowd could turn on Cena and support Orton
Jeff Hardy vs Edge- WWE Title
Matt Hardy vs Jack Swagger- ECW Title
HBK (w/JBL) vs HHH- HBK doesn't help JBL enough to beat Cena at the Rumble so JBL gets him into the one money making match Shawn wouldn't want to have to wrestle in...
Undertaker vs Jericho- Streak on the Line... Jericho wants a Main Event level match... here it is and I think he could be amazing on the mic here
Beth Phoenix vs Trish- Diva Special Attraction Match
Maryse vs Michelle McCool vs Maria vs Gail Kim- Divas Title Match
Morrison/Miz vs Cryme Time vs Kendrick/Jackson vs Colons- Tag Team Title Unification Match
Big Man's Battle Royal- WWE Heavyweights file a discrimination suit regarding the Money in the Bank match and are given this with a future title shot to the winner-
Kane vs The Great Khali vs Mike Knox vs The Big Show vs Mark Henry vs Festus
Money in the Bank with a twist- This year besides the Money in the Bank briefcase also hanging are the IC Title and US Title... match ends when all 3 are retrieved...
William Regal vs Shelton Benjamin vs Rey Mysterio Jr. vs Evan Bourne vs Cody Rhodes vs CM Punk vs Kofi Kingston vs Christian
Plus, likely some angle with Stone Cold
Posted By: Guest (Guest) on January 01, 2009 at 01:47 AM
there are many people that have "world title" written all over them..
MVP
Ted DiBiase
Christian Cage
John Morrison
not counting morrison's ecw titel reign
Posted By: (guest) (Guest) on January 01, 2009 at 01:47 AM
There will be a new title holder because John Morrison could cash in his MITB to do so.
As for TNA, I'm getting sick of it! Their knockouts division is going nowhere, the X Division is having short matches and not enough action. Foley and Booker are not draws. MEM vs Frontline is a rehash of NWO vs WCW. The whole point of MEM vs Frontline was young guys vs veterans, but Jarrett, Foley, Rhino, and 3D are helping out, WTF? Last of all, THERE IS TOO MUCH SEGMENTS!
Posted By: Chris (Guest) on January 01, 2009 at 01:56 AM
Shelton and christian are top 2 picks as well, also Tyler black for roh, homicide for tna, finlay for ecw, umaga if not the other 2 mentioned for SD, and regal for raw all deserving a chance
Posted By: Guest#1664 (Guest) on January 01, 2009 at 02:01 AM
They should turn Shelton so he can put on the matches like he did against HBK!

i do hope that the wwe will do something interesting this year with John Cena. Cause this guy's act is getting very boring. It is the same stuff week in, week out as last year the year before. Make Cena more believable and not superman. One more year of Cena beating every challenger will just show that they dont trust any other wrestler (besides Triple HHH) to carry Raw.
Its hard enough for me watch Raw now, but if this continues Raw arena's will be filled with parents and small children.
The build leading up to WrestleMania and the show itself will determine how well 2009 will be for the WWE. Put HHH and Cena in the shadows this year and see how well the rest of the wrestlers does.

Texas Kelly,
While I agree with some of what you said, especially where Jeff needs to cement his main-event status, I don't see that him losing by outside interference costs him any credibility. Him jobbing cleanly to Edge makes no sense, we both agree on that. But also, look at the bigger picture. WM25 is the biggest show of the year and will need more than the title matches to drive buyrates, especially in this economy and especially if Vince won't drop the price. You need 3 or 4 other solid matches below the 2 main title matches. I think Cena/Orton for the World title is pretty much a lock now, and I think they are building to a JBL/HBK match. Throw in MITB and there's 3 high profile matches. Now, if you go with what I talked about, you have HHH/Edge and Christian/Jeff and you're up to 5 high-profile matches. Toss in whoever they feed to Taker this year for his streak (probably Kozlov, thats my guess. I think they'll save HBK/Taker for when one or both decide to retire) and the ECW title match (Hardy/Swagger) and you've got a fairly solid card. Something also tells me that HHH would never put Jeff over cleanly for a title, not at this stage. While it would be the right thing to do, we've all seen HHH not want to be the guy who looks weak time and again. I could be wrong, and would have no problem being wrong, that's just how I see things playing out.
Posted By: Common Sense (Guest) on January 01, 2009 at 05:40 AM
What a complete and utter waste of time yet again. Sickingly pro-wwe and anti-tna, it makes you wonder why they even write the darn things anymore.
Posted By: kliq316 (Guest) on January 01, 2009 at 06:18 AM
Before I continue, note that I am a huge Shelton Benjamin fan and would love to see him be a World champion for my own selfish reasons. But why does everyone think he should be guaranteed it? He's fun to watch in the ring, but he's often sloppy, can have great matches but he's very inconsistent. He also strikes me as sloppy and dangerous in the ring. Every time I watch Benjamin, it's always in the back of my mind that he's going to slip and break his neck. I like him, but I just can't picture him ever being a world champ.

I think it was Unforgiven 2008. Sure it wasn't "HALF" but I know they gave out alot of free tickets. As for TNA after Victory Road they stopped giving out tickets for free. Quit bitching already you typing this crap is like me saying "Oh man and those women matches are nothing but bra and panties matches wah wah wah." Honestly get a grip TNA isn't perfect and neither is WWE or ROH. You whining isn't gonna change anything just enjoy the show jackass. I can go on and rant about how WWE this and WWE that with The Khali kiss cam, Hornsoggle and 9 titles but you know what I don't cus like I said neither is perfect. If you're a TNA hater that just wants to bash look at WWE and see they have their own stupid things as well but if you're just a pissed off TNA fan that's just gonna bitch and moan well then STFU cus you're not a fan. I'm not saying to accept TNA for all their flaws like many of the other sheeps would assume but realize eventually things will work out. Oh by the way I'm not a TNA mark like I'm sure many idiots are gonna assume but an actual WRESTLING FAN who watches and realizes that OMG guess what? there's always an alternative if I don't like what WWE is offering I can switch to TNA or ROH and the other way around. Hell why not watch AJPW, or AAA as well (yup there's wrestling promotions outside of North America) Funny TNA haters watch and whine about TNA and WWE haters do the same. Please if you're a fan of one promotion then stick by it and stop bashing the other promotion. If you're of fan of all learn to accept they all make bad mistakes and decisions. Whining isn't gonna help folks.

jericho wins most overrated wrestler of the year for the 13th straight
Posted By: Guest#7934 (Guest) on January 01, 2009 at 07:40 AM
Since 1990, there have only been 2 years (1995 and 1997) that the WWF/E hasn't put a World Title on someone that hasn't held it before. 1990 was Warrior. 1991 Slaughter/Undertaker. 1992 Flair/Bret. 1993 Yokozuna. 1994 Diesel. 1996 HBK/Sid. 1998 Rock/Kane. 1999 Mankind/HHH/Big Show. 2000 Kurt Angle. 2001 Y2J. 2002 Brock. 2003 Goldberg. 2004 Eddie/Benoit/Orton. 2005 Cena/Batista. 2006 Rey/Edge/RVD. 2007 Khali. 2008 Jeff Hardy/Punk.
So chances are we will see at least one new champion.
Posted By: thebeast (Guest) on January 01, 2009 at 08:42 AM
I dont think Batista will be missed.I would book the foll. matches for WM25.
Randy Orton vs. Stone Cold (the rock can make an appearance to clear out the legacy)
Jeff Hardy vs. Edge vs. Christian (TLC match)
John Cena vs. HHH (HHH wins the rumble and they can have their big decider match)
Undertaker vs. Jericho (ideally the streak ends)
other matches
Shawn michaels vs. JBL (retirement match)
Beth phoenix vs. Gail Kim
Matt Hardy vs. Evan Bourne (Matt loses and then costs jeff his title)
MITB match with usual suspects
CMPunk vs. Mysterio - IC title (Masked Kane returns and destroys both)
Generic Monster Match
Koslov vs. BigShow vs. Umaga vs. Khali
Comments?

"And if your decision to buy or not to buy WrestleMania hinges on the involvement of Batista, I'm sorry, friend, but you're a pathetic example of a fan."
I agree 100% and was going to say that after reading the question itself, but you said it for me.
However I disagree with you on the new champ part. MITB has given a nearly-guaranteed title to someone new. Next MITB match: Kennedy, MVP, Morrison, Benjamin, etc. Any of which will get their title, no matter how short-lived the run will be.
Of course there's still a good chance of someone else getting there without the MITB match, but that's obviously where it's most likely to happen.
Posted By: Bucksinnc (Guest) on January 01, 2009 at 09:03 AM
Hey Snabbit of course Shelton Benjamin is future world champ. He should win the Royal Rumble or MITB at WM25. He needs a much desired face turn and jump to RAW to capture the World title to feud with the legacy, Chris Jericho, or JBL. I'm bias but he just can't get over as a heel.

Thehavok - ah, the sign of someone that knows they are wrong... using comments like "you jackass" instead of being able to use actual facts. Come back when you can act like an adult instead of a child that knows he can say things because the person he's insulting isn't in the same room with him.
I am a fan of wrestling. That means I'll criticize what I think is wrong in hopes it will get better. What you are asking me to be is a sheep, which I refuse to do. If it works for you, then great... but take your own advice, continue to be a sheep, and stop criticizing those of us that disagree with your opinions.
Posted By: Scott B (Guest) on January 01, 2009 at 11:01 AM
1) Correct. Jericho was easily the best wrestler/superstar of the year. But I also agree that Edge is a close second. If it wasn't for those few months off it'd be a much harder choice to make.
4) I have to be pessimistic. I think we all have to be if we aren't kidding ourselves. Like someone said, everytime TNA shows signs of having a breakout storyline they screw it up. Even the MEM thing is going to be lame if it ends with Sting turning face again. I want to see a badass, take no crap Sting. Instead we get this Sting that refuses to participate in beatdowns. And don't give me that mafia boss thing. Angle is the boss. This angle needs to end with Christopher Daniels taking the World title from Sting cleanly. Also, don't harp on the knockout's division. Christy Hemme is being treated as a serious contender right now.
6) "If you'd have told me this time last year that Jeff Hardy wouldn't see his first World Title victory until December, I'd have thought you were nuts, as it seemed to be at his fingertips December 2007, so who knows?"
Really, Eubanks? Come on. Everyone and their mother knew Jeff would choke at the Rumble and he did. Then with his second strike he's LUCKY to be champ now. If you honestly thought the title was within his grasp a year ago then I'm sorry but you're fairly naive.
Side note: Can we stop calling it "WWECW?" That joke stopped being funny after immediately.

Since 1990, there have only been 2 years (1995 and 1997) that the WWF/E hasn't put a World Title on someone that hasn't held it before. 1990 was Warrior. 1991 Slaughter/Undertaker. 1992 Flair/Bret. 1993 Yokozuna. 1994 Diesel. 1996 HBK/Sid. 1998 Rock/Kane. 1999 Mankind/HHH/Big Show. 2000 Kurt Angle. 2001 Y2J. 2002 Brock. 2003 Goldberg. 2004 Eddie/Benoit/Orton. 2005 Cena/Batista. 2006 Rey/Edge/RVD. 2007 Khali. 2008 Jeff Hardy/Punk.
So chances are we will see at least one new champion.

Ummm, you forgot that Austin won the title for the first time in 1998.

Jericho is the most overrated superstar in the WWE, he does'nt have 1/4 THE talent that Batista has. Everyone knows Batista was one of the top drawing champions in WWE history.

1: FACT. Was anyone else PLEASANTLY SUPRISED when Chris Jericho took home the Slammy for Best WWE Superstar of the Year a few weeks ago instead of John Cena or Batista? Even McMahonagement recognizes the year Y2J had in 2008, and while a strong case can be made for Edge, he DID miss 3 months after his feud with Taker ended.
5: Hate to say it, but FACT. Now more than EVER Vince McMahon is going to NEED to put on a card that people WANT to buy instead of relying on the old "hey, it's WrestleMania!" and only putting on 1-2 SPECIAL matches to sell the card. Will Stone Cold Steve Austin returning for ONE LAST MATCH with say Randy Orton or Edge be special? Absolutely. But if the OTHER Main Event is HBK VS Useless Bradshaw, Title VS Career it simply WON'T BE ENOUGH to sell WrestleMania. The sad part though is even if the WWE GOES ALL OUT, like they did at WrestleMania XVII, how many people would REALLY be willing to shell out $60 in this economy? In fact, if McMahonagement "Stays the Course" and relies on Stone Cold to sell WrestleMania (while making the rest of the card lackluster at best) I wouldn't be suprised if Mania only did AROUND 650,000 BUYS or so.
6. FACT, if only because the WWE likes to mix in new talent to the WWE Title Scene every so often. Given his success in ECW (and possible impending feud with his brother Jeff) I could see Matt Hardy getting a WWE/World Title reign at some point, even if only a brief one. Similarly, I wouldn't put it past McMahonagement to throw the WWE/World Title on Vladamir Kozlov for a few months over the summer to see what he could do with it. Finally, let's not forget the Money in the Bank match at WrestleMania. Unless they run an angle where Jeff Hardy loses the belt, ends up in MITB, wins MITB, and cashes it in at the end of WrestleMania after (a post-Heel Turn) Triple H wins the belt, the MITB winner will probably be someone who HASN'T had the Title yet (Christian?), and MITB winners are almost ALWAYS successful whenever they decide to cash in.

Are you serious? Batista is one of the most boring wrestlers to watch. Hes slow and not exciting at all. Batista is to 2008 as Hulk Hogan was to the 80's. Same three or four boring moves, pump up the crowd with the ever so impressive rope shake, and then hits a gay powerbomb for the win. Batista hasnt been the same ever since his injury a couple of years ago.

Ive been saying this all along...two years ago at the RR, we saw HBK and taker as the final two participants. It was awesome! At the 2008 RR, we saw them start the match. WM 25 is in Texas, where both HBK and Taker are from. Put them against each other. No stipulations, just a one on one match. It could be a classic. It could be another brand vs brand match like they did at WM 21 between HBK and Angle. Make it happen WWE!

Well, i wanted to give the author a chance to respond before jumping down his throat.
However, I find it reprehensible that he would refer to a wido and mother of three daughters as a "cow."
Honestly, it's disturbing how some of the writers, let alone fans, have absolutely no heart and nary a second thought at making personal attacks on public figures.

Brian, seriously, STFU... The character Vickie is the cow... she's probably nice in person or maybe she's an asshole, who knows??? I think it's great you're so offended by it though...
if someone called Y2J a "dick" or a "jerk" is that rude to say about a hard-working family man?
Or calling Batista a "roid head bore-fest" is that mean? after all, he's a nice guy in person...
the list is endless but the answer to your gripe is still the same... STFU!
Post when you get a clue about both wrestling and 411, ya dope

People forget that hbk and taker feuded in 1997 which culminated in the first and best hell in a cell match that received 5 stars from dave meltzer?

He's referring to her "character" as a cow, the moo-moo-cita as she's affectionately called on 411. Get off the rag, Brian.

Fuck, hum. What a stupid comment. Comparing Batista to one of the biggest stars in the history of wrestling is not a good way to say how shitty Batista is. Shitty move set or not, Hogan is arguably the most over wrestler in history. Comparing him to Luger is much more accurate.
I also think Taker-HBK would be awesome.

The jokes about Vickie's weight are kind of sad. First of all, she's not that fat. Obviously she's overweight but the jokes that get made about her are as if she's 400 pounds.
Beyond that they just show a complete lack of creativity. Of course, the person who makes most of them is HHH who has pretty much been coasting for the last three years on promos where all he does is wink at the crowd. "Vince is really my father-in-law and I really had a couple of kids with my wife Stephanie McMahon. Wrestling is fake. You know this. I know this. As long as I hint at that I'm super cool!"
So it's no surprise that he's now leaning on even lamer jokes. Although I don't blame him. If I could get fans to laugh at pictures of Vince with a rooster then I'd assume Vickie is fat jokes are a goldmine as well.
Crap like this is why Jericho's promos are a breath of fresh air and I can't help but roll my eyes at Cena's pandering, Hogan-esque stuff.

"Thehavok - ah, the sign of someone that knows they are wrong... using comments like "you jackass" instead of being able to use actual facts.
If it works for you, then great... but take your own advice, continue to be a sheep, and stop criticizing those of us that disagree with your opinions."

Lol criticizing? Sounds more like bitching all the time I swear. Lol and how can I ask you to be a sheep when you already are. funny you say I can't provide facts yet you can't either lol. Sorry kid guess you didn't know what I was talking about so my bad child. jackass.

The retards are posting "HHH Facts" now.
Stuffed into lockers by jocks, shower on their own, get ignored by girls..
Is it any wonder!?

@ Ron Mexico
Yes she is fat
yes, HHH is lame in his desperate promos
yes she is fat
if it weren't for lame & childish comments in wrestling there would be no bar to set to look up to promos that Y2J, HBK, Miz & Morrison cut every week... take the good with the bad!
And how do you know what specific weight class a fat joke qualifies as? she might not be 400 pounds but she's fat so what do you suggest cheap faces like HHH aim for when insulting her? careful what you think, people might find it "sad"...

my apologies angry bear. batista is a mountain full of crap, just like lex luger.
If HBK-Taker doesnt happen this year, i think WWE will be losing out. They dont have many more years left. I hope they dont wind up like hogan did. i felt sorry for him during his last few appearances. It was sad to watch him in the ring. He couldnt take any bumps.

"And if your decision to buy or not to buy WrestleMania hinges on the involvement of Batista, I'm sorry, friend, but you're a pathetic example of a fan." I couldn't agree more.
