For The Record 1.18.09: Jeff Hardy’s Reign Won’t Last Long
Posted by Kristopher Rodriguez on 01.18.2009
In this week’s edition of For The Record, we’ll discuss why Jeff Hardy’s title reign will probably be brief.
Jeff Hardy's journey to the WWE Championship was the longest running storyline of 2008. The quest that spanned over a year came to fruition at Armageddon last month. In the triple threat match for the title, Jeff Hardy's ultimate professional dream came true. Hardy joined an elite group of only 38 other wrestlers when he won the WWE Championship.
Unfortunately, Jeff Hardy's reign has been a bit stale. But before we discuss the reign, let us first recall the chase.
Part of what made Hardy such an appealing figure last year was that he told the story of a phoenix rising from the ashes (no pun intended). Jeff Hardy had a roller coaster year. He put on a solid title match with Randy Orton at the 2008 Royal Rumble and proved that he could hang with the big boys. He went on to give a gallant effort in the Elimination Chamber Match at No Way Out (only to be eliminated at the very end by you know who). Proving to the WWE brass that he could deliver when, as JBL would say, "the lights are on bright", Jeff Hardy looked to be in a prime position to win the Money in the Bank Match. However, the high flier got in the way of his own success.
Suspended on the 11th of March, 2008, Jeff Hardy was forced into a 60 day hiatus from WWE. He immediately dropped the Intercontinental Championship to Chris Jericho, lost his spot in the Money in the Bank Match, and would eventually suffer the pain of losing a house and his dog from a fire. Jeff Hardy lost a lot last year. But one thing he never surrendered was his will.
Jeff Hardy returned to Raw on May 12 to adulating fans and it wasn't long before the "Extreme Enigma" resumed his hunt for the WWE Championship. Fast forward to September of this past year. We hear about the creation of a new gimmick matched called the Championship Scramble. Inserted into the match on the Smackdown side of things was WWE Champion Triple H, MVP, Brian Kendrick, Shelton Benjamin, and of course, Jeff Hardy. In the waning seconds of the match, fans collectively held their breaths as Jeff Hardy desperately tried retain his status as temporary (but unofficial) WWE Champion. But Triple H, clutching victory from the jaws of defeat, scored a fall over MVP with one second remaining.
Jeff Hardy, once again, came up a bit short. He went on to challenge Triple H for the WWE Championship at No Mercy in what some consider to be a **** star match. But alas, Triple H would retain again after catching Jeff Hardy off guard with a rollup. Again, Hardy would challenge Triple H at Cyber Sunday, only to squander another opportunity. So okay, we would figure that Jeff Hardy would give it a rest. But no! He was scheduled to get another shot at the Survivor Series. Of course he never competed in that match. He was "incapacitated", giving Edge the opportunity to sneak into the contest and win his sixth world title.
Finally, Jeff Hardy would win the WWE Championship on his fourth pay-per-view title shot of 2008 at Armageddon. It was about time. It could have been done a few months earlier, but that's just a minor gripe. Jeff Hardy climbed slowly up the ladder from jobber in 1994 to WWE Champion in 2008. The 14 year odyssey to the most coveted title in pro wrestling saw many bumps in the road. But Jeff Hardy could always rely on one thing throughout the years, and that was the undying and unconditional support of WWE fans.
Jeff Hardy's victory at Armageddon was rich with meaning. It demonstrated the value of redemption and second chances. It showed that those who have been called rejects, screw ups, and "white trash" have dignity and potential. His victory taught the youth to never despair, but rather to have hope, work hard, and shoot for the stars. It's a powerful message with broad appeal.
But all that inspirational stuff can only carry a wrestler so far. Life goes on beyond Armageddon (ironic, I know). While his chase made for good TV, his title reign hasn't. To put it bluntly, Jeff Hardy has had a lackluster reign. He' not made or built to carry a show. He is too mild-mannered to consistently compete as "the headliner" of a Raw or a Smackdown, and thus, not designed to hold world titles for a long length of time. CM Punk and Chris Benoit ran into the same problem. To be atop a show like Smackdown or Raw, one must not only possess a larger than life presence; he must also possess a larger than life personality. Guys like Edge, Triple H, The Undertaker, Chris Jericho, Randy Orton, Shawn Michaels, John Cena, and JBL are far more equipped than Jeff Hardy to carry a zany WWE program. They are absolutely full of themselves and are very easy to hate or love. Jeff Hardy has not reached the level of any of those aforementioned men as a wrestling personality.
Does that mean that guys like Jeff Hardy and CM Punk should never hang around the main even scene? No. But they can't be consistently called upon to carry a two hour program unless they make some serious character alterations. Hardy, Punk, and Benoit were great to watch when they won their world championships. But they proved that some wrestlers are better at winning titles than holding titles.
We are heading into Wrestlemania season. This is the most anticipated and exciting time of the wrestling calendar. And with this being the 25th Anniversary of Wrestlemania no less, we need to see the most grandiose egos available heading into the extravaganza's main events. We need to see every wrestler on that card at his best. Hardy will be at his best if he gets to perform (A) without the weight of that entire event resting on his shoulders and (B) with the benefit of opposing a despised heel. And if the rumors are true, Jeff Hardy might have the perfect opponent waiting in the wings.
If Christian is revealed to be the culprit behind the hospitalization angle, the vehicular hit and run, and the pyrotechnic malfunction, a Wrestlemania grudge match between he and Hardy will most likely result. Assuming the feud would be built properly, such a battle would have definite "match of the night" and "Wrestlemania classic" potential.
Jeff Hardy should not walk into Wrestlemania as champion. But he should be given a "featured attraction" spot on the card. That way, if Hardy were to be subject to his third and final wellness violation, it wouldn't be with him holding the title during the Road to Wrestlemania.
My prediction for the Royal Rumble WWE Championship match: Jeff Hardy will drop the title to Edge.

when did Jeff last have a singles competition ? Was it Big show, last year?
I think Hardy is either kept out intentionally, or riding out some injury, and with SD taped in doubles, he hasn't been inside the ring in, what, four weeks ?
We had an ECW tag team match on SD this week, last week we had HHH on three matches, to me that says "we need to fill time, let's put this out there"
so yeah, a lackluster title reign, so far, i mean why would you NOT have the champion on your show to carry it, then again, HHH does like to take the limelight...

Wrestlemania 25: Edge(c) vs HHH
HHH will win .
Houston will riot.
I hope Steph divorces HHH , so that he is not at Mania.
It should be Matt V Jeff V edge V Christian - TLC.

HHH hasn't won at Wrestlemania since 19 so i look for him to get his win this year. I agree that Jeff will drop the title to Edge and go on to face Christian, unless they try and swerve with Matt being the culprit. But Jeff's days as champ are numbered.

how about a 4-way ladder match for the title with christian, matt and jeff, and edge? could be pretty awesome.

I totally disagree with this article. Jeff has had a pretty good title reign so far and it would be stupid of the WWE to take the title from him so fast. I think Jeff may lose at Wrestlemania, but I don't think it would be a good idea to have him lose his first title defense.

The difference between Hardy and Benoit, CM Punk title reign is that there trying to build up a storyline with his title reign. I dont know if he will lose at the RR. But I feel its more exciting to watch when he was chasing the gold him winning it was awesome. But having him have a short reign and then build up the momentum to winning it again would be the way to go.

I'd like to differ with my opinion, Punk and Benoit were great, but even so I don't think their pop quite compares to that of Jeff Hardy. Jeff Hardy is insanely over, probably the most over throughout the whole company even with the wrong booking, so I'd have to disagree that a feud can't work out with him, plus his promoing has gotten better as of late.

Mr. Rodriguez, I have a lot of respect for you because of what you write. And while I hate to disagree with you, I have to say Jeff Hardy won't be dropping the WWE Title anytime soon. It's not because he's not made or built to carry a show. It's because of, in my opinion, three things: 1. the wellness factor-he hasn't gotten the third and final strike, which shows how badly he wanted to win the WWE Title as well as how badly he wants to keep his job. 2. the people-he's so damn popular that if you stuck him in a match with Hulk Hogan, Hardy will get the win, whether Hogan wants to job or not. 3. the SmackDown heel scene-he's got no competition. This isn't the damn Edge show, the damn Vladamir Koslov show or the damn Big Show reality show. Face it, there are no heels for him to feud with, unless Trips pulls the trigger on his heel turn himself and says, "I want my belt back now"! Even if, yes, I said if, Umaga returns, who's gonna consider HIM a viable threat? After the way Christian got buried on his last TNA TV appearance, who's gonna consider HIM competitive? Unless they move Shawn Michaels, John Cena or Batista to SmackDown, give him a new moveset and turn him heel, Jeff Hardy will be the man. It all boils down to who's got the final say in the WWE. And that person is Vincent Kennedy McMahon. Of course, that's just my opinion, and I could be wrong. But I doubt it.

Punk could carry a brand just fine if they had let him. They booked him like a bitch, so he came across as a bitch. Heel Punk could run wild as top champ on RAW if given the chance. He's so easy to hate. But alas, in the days of WWE Kids and PG ratings, making a Straight-Edge wrestler a heel will never happen. What kind of message would that send to the kiddies? That the guy who doesn't drink or do drugs is a total asshole? So they should... do drugs, and they'll be better people?
I wish Punk were born 10 years earlier so he would have been able to be in the Attitude era. =[

It's not Hardy's fault his reign has been lackluster. The writers book him like a fool. The guy gets one segment a night for God's sake! That's less tv time than Michelle McCool, MVP,Kennedy(i hate him) and KOZLOV.Triple H gets about 2-3 segments every night including the opening one and sometimes the ending one. Hardy isn't great on the mic so give him a manager. I honestly won't mind if he drops the belt to Edge at RR but I would like to see him in the main event at Mania. Hardy is best at the chase. Hell, put Christian and Matt in the match if creative wants more charisma. I just don't want to see the kings of kings in the main event. It's just stale and he is not a good face. He's not entertaining nor funny (the Vickie pics are creepy). Matt vs Edge vs Jeff vs Christian at Wrestlemania 25

great column. i read it twice. you make some interesting points, and your criticism is evenhanded. i respect that. i've been marking out for Jeff for a decade, but now that he's climbed Everest, i can allow myself to scrutinize.
i imagine you're right that it's more lucrative for the E when Jeff is chasing, not holding, the belt. and i agree that he'll never be Jericho on the mic. in the land of the blind, Jeff Hardy would never be king.
but i heartily disagree with anybody who feels Jeff the headliner is too dangerous. first of all, a third strike is no more an inevitability for Jeff than it was for Babe Ruth. and also, PPVs aren't about mic skills. PPVs are shut up and go time.
in the land of the deaf, Jeff Hardy looks great with the crown.
for the record, i agree Jeff will drop the belt to Edge. hopefully, Christian assumes his ready-made program, and Jeff can get his retribution at WM (i'd be shocked if Vince puts a TNA guy over a former champ right out the gate), Edge can drop the title to Triple Who-the-fuck-ever at WM, and we can get a proper Hardyz/E&C reunion-feud. hell - emphatically - yes! midcard heaven! :)

Someone hasn't been watching every Jeff Hardy promo since he randomly killed Miz and MORRISON. His Sting/Raven/Heath Ledger's Joker gimmick is larger than life.

good recap of Jeff's 2008 highs and lows and his pros and cons. But getting to the main point of the article i can't see Hardy retaining the title at the Rumble, or rather i can't imagine WWE booking him as the defending champ heading into WM 25, which is a good reason that maybe WWE should have given him the belt before Armageddon.

I have to agree with Ozzy here...everyone is saying Hardy's title reign has been lacklust (he's been champ for what, 3 weeks?? Jesus) but look what "Creative" has for him on the show...instead of booking him in actual title defenses, they are having him in these "near death accidents" conducted by someone out to get him...why is this Hardy's fault?? Why does this make him a lackluster champion?
The problem is that the Creative Team can't stick to one thing very long or what got us interested in the first place! Tons of people had been rooting for Hardy to win the title this year, but it wasn't until he hit his "tweener" segments against Undertaker, HHH, Kozlov etc. that people started wanting it more. That the "tweener" Hardy had more edge to him and we could get behind him, he had more character depth...he was gonna go out there and put his body on the line and kill himself and anyone that was in his way to accomplish his goal.
But it seems like creative forgot about that, now having him play the victim instead of the no-holds barred badass...people wanted to see Jeff going out every night and tearing it up with no regard...instead he is the victim of a hit and run and attempted murder with pyro??
So I don't blame Jeff for this, I blame creative...it's what they do every time, they change things that fans actually find themselves drawn to! Instead of Hardy being a tweener badass, we get more of HHH shoved down our throats 3 times during each show...so for those of you that say "HHH hasn't been champ much lately, he isn't holding anyone back"...just watch the show, he doesn't have to be champ to be holding anyone back....he just needs the TV time

wrestlemania 25 main event predictions:
wwe title: edge vs triple h
(jeff hardy drops title to edge at royal rumble)
world title: john cena vs randy orton w/legacy
(randy orton wins royal rumble)
ecw title: jeff hardy vs matt hardy
(matt hardy regains title from jack swagger at, intervenes at jeff/edge match thus setting up the sibling rivalry)

Pyro will have messed up Hardy's face allowing for permanent war paint situation. The guy is obviously 10 times more comfortable behind the paint.

Jeff Hardy is more "exciting" (using the term very loosely as the man is a piece of colourful cardboard) if he can just do his thing - Put him against any heel, put a ladder there, tell him to jump off of it, his fangirls go wild and there is how Jeff should be booked for eternity, oh and one last thing he should never be champion of any kind.
Drop the title Jeff, you still keep your fans, get that massive pop that wont ever change, keep attempting to wrestle and use the mic just dont be a champion. You put it best Mr Rodriguez he is a "featured attraction" one that gets the people going, keep it that way!

Jeff Hardy sucks.......The guy has 4 moves, that is why he's world title reign has been lackluster. Jeff is right up there with Cena, the hulkster, and Goldberg. Who were all incredible over in their time. Jeff jumps off stuff and wears body paint. Wow,that's so cool. Jeff hardy sucks.... SHELTON Benjamin or MVP FOR WWE CHAMPION
Posted By: chris (Guest) on January 19, 2009 at 08:54 AM
I disagree.. Jeff is a far better wrestler and has much more popularity than Randy Orton, Edge and JBL!! He is by far one of the most dynamic superstars to hold this title and I think it's well deserved and WWE would be foolish to not let his reign last longer because lets face it, JEFF has some hardcore fans that are just loving this right now!! We love him!!!

If Christian is revealed to be the culprit behind the hospitalization angle, the vehicular hit and run, and the pyrotechnic malfunction, a Wrestlemania grudge match between he and Hardy will most likely result.
--------------------------------------
Between HIM and Jeff Hardy. Him. Him. Him. Him and Jeff Hardy. Not he and Jeff Hardy. Him.

I would love to see a fatal four way ladder match at Mania with Matt, Jeff, Edge and Christian. And with the way they have things now it can work. Have Christian as the attacker but reveal it later so he gets his huge face pop for his return. Edge can get into the picture easy with Vickie's help and Matt already lost ECW title which leaves him open for something new. Have him somehow become number one contender, either through some challenge (Rumble, Chamber etc.) or given a spot by a new GM once Vickie gets canned for abusing her power or something to that degree. Then you have plenty of time to build the four to a big time ladder match at Wrestlemania, 10 years after they had their classic tag team ladder match in the 1999 No Mercy which sparked their careers.
