Brooklyn Brawlin' 2.18.09: World Title Hysteria En Route to Houston
Posted by Dan Torkel on 02.18.2009
We see Wrestlemania on the horizon, we see the matches being planned, but do we want to watch them...again?
Greetings to all. Well the last two night have been put some pretty tumultuous bumps in the Road to Wrestlemania. At No Way Out, Edge loses the WWE Title in the opener, and wins the World Title in the main event. Cena loses an unlosable match, albeit against an opponent we never saw coming. And Triple H (once again Champion) is back on Raw to stop the McMahon Killing Machine, Randy Orton!
It is funny that WWE 24/7 has had the Rock's DVD in its Legend's Section and I have been catching up on all the craziness of early 1999. Then, under Vince Russo's Crash TV booking style, Rock and Mankind traded the WWE Title 4 times between January 4th and February 15th. Rock then lost the title to Austin a month later. The hot potato belt theory was not so obvious back then because it was all so new and fresh and Austin, Rock, and Foley were such intriguing characters.
Lets start with No Way Out. A great way to start the show and a great surprise with Edge getting eliminated right away... but the second I saw that I and many others new what was going on. But how, are we psychic? No; this JUST HAPPENED! Apparently WWE Creative thinks its fans have short-term memory loss. Survivor Series was only 3 months ago. There, Jeff Hardy was knocked out of his triple threat match, and Edge made a shocking return to capture the WWE Title. In fact, Edge has won 4 of his World Titles via sneaking in at the opportune moment; 1) his first at New Year's Revolution when he cashed in MITB, 2) Stealing MITB and the Title in the same night from Undertaker on Smackdown, 3) Survivor Series 2008, 4) No Way Out. We get it, he is a sneaky bastard.
For those who did not see the swerve coming throughout the rest of show were clued instantly to the ending when Edge took out Kofi before the Raw chamber. This by the way marks the second consecutive ppv, where the internet buzz might have had something to do with the outcome. Last month, Christian was apparently supposed to be Jeff Hardy's attacker, but we all ruined that and they pulled a switcharoo with Matt Hardy. Then with all the buzz being about how the Raw Chamber was SO obvious, they pull another switch and flip Edge back to win it. Kudos to Rey for a superb showing in the Chamber and I actually want Rey to get another push out of this.
Randy Orton vs. Shane was disappointing, but served its purpose. On Raw the fight was great as it sowed the seeds perfectly for Orton vs. Triple H with all the hatred and bloody rivalry behind it. FINALLY Stephanie took her bump with the RKO, and Shane is punted, so that leaves (aside from Linda) only Triple H as the family protector. I knew the WWE would not do Edge/Triple H and Cena/Orton, I just had a feeling that those matches were too safe. For those who are arguing that this match has been done to death, here is a point/counterpoint on potential main events.
Orton vs. Cena -
Historically a great rivalry, they engaged in a big feud in the Summer of 2007, featuring Randy Orton punting Cena's Dad. Orton was also the kayfabe reason for Cena's injury that summer, and upon his return in January Cena wanted blood. He rushed his Wrestlemania Title shot to No Way Out 2008, and won by DQ. At Wrestlemania he was pinned by Orton. Since then, they have had little interaction. This would have been a sloppily put together feud at the last minute that was overshadowed by the McMahon storyline. It also would have made Cena the protector of the McMahons, which is highly out of character for him.
Orton vs. Triple H -
Forgetting the years of background dating back to Evolution and the heel turn on Orton after his first title win, let's focus on just the last year. Triple H and Orton have been feuding since last Wrestlemania when Orton stole Hunter's pin. At Backlash, Triple H defeated Orton for the Title in a Fatal Four way, thus ending the Age of Orton. He then defended it against Orton twice on ppv, once in a cage, and once in a Last Man Standing match, the latter in which Orton suffered a broken collarbone sending him out for months. With Orton out, Triple H was drafted to Smackdown and thus there no retribution for Orton upon his return. The first time they were in the same ring again, it was Orton eliminating Hunter to win the Royal Rumble. That was a week after punting his father in law, and now he has destroyed his brother in law and RKO'ed his wife. Orton is working his way back to Triple H and now not only can conquer his greatest enemy, but take back the WWE Title as well.
Edge vs. Cena was done to death back in 2006, but this matchup has not been done on a serious ppv in a long time. Let's not forget the hatred here, including Edge breaking into Cena's home and beating up his father. They had a monster series of matches throughout the summer of 06 including a great match at Summerslam and a really good TLC match at Unforgiven. One thing that Edge's opportunistic streak sometimes makes fans forget is how good he is in the ring. Last year, his match with Undertaker at WM 24 was my pick for MOTY and his subsequent feud provided many other great matches.
Speaking of matches that have been done before... it looks like we are all getting what we asked for, Taker/HBK. Talk about fresh matches, this has not been done on a major show since the Rumble of 1998 where HBK suffered his infamous back injury that was supposed to be career ending. Now 11 years later, the entire world seems to be craving this match. Hey, based on the past history you can't argue. The weakest of their big 3 matches (Ground Zero, Bad Blood, Rumble), was the Rumble match which was the best Casket Match ever and hovered around 4- stars. Given both their histories with Wrestlemania, I am marking this as the easy pick for MOTN, MOTY, and maybe best non-title match in Wrestlemania history. Is that an unfair amount of hype to live up to? You know, given the participants, No. This is Shawn and Taker, the two longest running employees, in their hometowns, still running at top speed. This is the match many others and I are most excited for.
Then there is the issue of Chris Jericho at Wrestlemania. First Rourke, then Flair, now Piper… wow Jericho is running down a gamut of legends en route to Wrestlemania. Flair wrestling I think is out, and with the event being in Texas, and with the Hall of Fame ceremony, I think if Jericho wrestles it will be against Stone Cold Steve Austin. Austin claimed recently that Jericho would be of the few people he'd trust in the ring at this point and the match would not have to be a classic 20-minute encounter, but rather a spectacle event like Lashley/Umaga (Trump vs. McMahon) and Big Show/Mayweather. You can have Flair, Piper, and Mickey Rourke, as well as other legends there to run interference and ensure the Austin win so Jericho is protected, (though WWE does not seem to care about protecting Jericho, whether from Cena making him a BITCH, or fans in the parking lot). If Austin does not want to wrestle a full match, I say that Jericho has a Highlight Reel at Wrestlemania with Mickey Rourke as his guest and Flair, Piper, Austin, and the Funks come out to beat the holy hell out of him, ending with Rourke giving Jericho the "Ram Jam."
With the top 4 matches seemingly being Triple H/Orton, Cena/Edge, Shawn/Taker, and Jericho/Austin, it doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room for the rest of the card. Wrestlemania in the previous few years have had 7 – 9 matches with more emphasis on the background and details than in ring action. Figuring we will have a MITB V at the show, that will get 6 – 8 guys on the card. What else? They are building to a MVP/Shelton US Title match, but does that make the show, or are they in the MITB? You figure two match slots are filled by some sort of Jeff/Matt blow off, and Christian vs. SWAGGA for the ECW Title (Cue ominous Mr. Burns shuddering noise). Poor Christian. That leaves CM Punk, William Regal, The Legacy, JBL, Rey, Miz and Morrison, Kane, Big Show, Kozlov, Shelton, MVP, R-Truth, the Colons, THE Brian Kendrick, Ezekiel, Mike Knox, Finlay, Dreamer, Evan Bourne(?), Mr. Kennedy (?) and Umaga amongst others. I would have held off Christian's return till Wrestlemania and have him as a surprise entrant in the MITB match where he could win and then spend 6 months on ECW, before jumping to the big shows and using his case. He would still be in ECW, could still feud with Swagger, but his re-entrance to the company would have been seen by all, and not the 13 people who stay home on Tuesdays to watch ECW.
9 matches, spectacle, celebs, big time rivalries, bloodfeuds, and a match between 2 of the greatest of all time… seems good enough for the 25th edition of the Greatest Show in Wrestling.
Next week; a little something different, as we examine title histories and try to figure out the best matches for each title (existing or no long existing). Sample question: If you had to save only 1 IC Title match for all time, is it Steamboat/Savage, Shawn/Razor (Ladder), Bret/Bulldog, or another one totally different? OOOH GOOD FUN! Till then have fun storming the castle.
"I cannot imagine both heels winning, and also cannot imagine Orton NOT winning."
I can...this is H at WM we're talking about, after all. He wins here, and no matter what happens the feud extends for the spring, with Orton finally winning at some throwaway PPV like Judgement Day or Extreme Rules.

I'd love to see that, but the tag titles are about as important to the 'E right now as Paul Burchill is to their storylines....MnM 2.0 either need to make a phenomenal showing of themselves in the next month or so, or pull some serious strings backstage, and if they take either route it will be more than likely done to get themselves into MITB V.

HHH hasn't won at WM since WM 19 against Booker T, so that arguement doesn't hold any water.

Ram Jam would be awesome, but predictably followed by a stunner and a texas-sized shit load of beer. maybe jake the snake can muster enough sobriety to make an appearance.

decent fuckin card bro...
the only thing id switch up is having the tag titles unified with MnM 2.0 vs the colons.....and have rey and bourne in MITB, with rey takin the briefcase

My card as of today in order from main event:
World Heavyweight Title:
Edge (c) vs. Cena- if done right it can be given big match feel these guys are natural rivals and this is the grandest stage to put it on. Send the fans home happy with a win. The way I see it the title would need to be moved back to Smackdown and with Cena presumably not moving in the draft as he seems to be a Raw guy, I'd give Jericho the strap next or probably CM Punk maybe even Rey who seems to gaining steam. Maybe even Undertaker after he takes care of HBK. But keeping both titles on Raw for a month or so before hot shotting the title is a good move. Nevertheless Cena leaves the big show champ again.
WWE Championship:
Triple H (c) vs. Randy Orton- It seems like Austin will be the special ref according to sources and while I'm not a fan of adding more sizzle like that to the big important title matches, it certainly wont hurt it. Pretty obvious here how it's done and it only makes sense for Orton to go over but not from the help of Vince (although he should have a run in where it's teased), but from Stephanie. Vince's character has run it's course and it's time to put it to rest, you can announce a return in June around the time they do a 3 hour Raw and have him fight Orton for the belt or somethin. Now it's time to have Steph be the heel boss and Orton has her "franchise player" (much like Vince had Hogan, Bret, Shawn, Austin, Cena etc.) along with The Legacy. This would help the group big time.
Mr. Wrestlemania vs. The Streak:
Shawn Micheals vs. Undertaker- Pretty simple here no need to explain, Taker will go over.
Hardy vs. Hardy:
Matt vs. Jeff- convetional wisdom would tell you to get Jeff over but I think especially to keep this feud going give Matt the rub. Not a fluke in like Owen got over Bret, but a very decisive win. Have about half of the match go back and forth but Matt takes control about halfway through and totally destroy Jeff but keep Jeff strong as he "refuses to die". A ref stoppage would be good here if you didn't wanna a clean fall, which would put massive heat on Matt as he shows fans he is for real and keeps the feud going.
Jericho vs. Hogan- Jericho will continue to run down Legends every week andbeat them up til THE Legend confronts him. Pretty easy to book. I'd make Austin the special ref in this one to tease the idea of Austin Hogan but not actually do it cause we all know it wont happen. Have Hogan win but get a post match beat down where Austin makes the save. Austin and Hogan rejoice and have a beer bash along with other WWE Legends and HOFers as these to greats become buddy buddy and show how comfortable they really are with their places in history.
These are the major matches that will sell the PPV.

i think it might finally happen this year according to the smackdown spoilers they might put both tag team titles on the line to crown an undisputed tag team of the wwe who shall appear on all 3 shows even tho miz and morrison already do that but now it would be official

"… seems good enough for the 25th edition of the Greatest Show in Wrestling."
You deserve an award for not calling it the 25th anniversary like WWE wrongly insists on doing every ten minutes. There was no Wrestlemania Zero, this is the 24th anniversary, not 25th. It wouldn't bug me so much if they didn't say it constantly. Thank you for getting it right.

Excellent article. Your thought that Vince McMahon should turn on Triple H in the same way he turned on The Rock at Wrestlemania X-7 is brilliant. Wrestlemania XXV will indeed be in Houston just like the 2001 edition. That would catch millions of fans off guard. Well done, well-written.
And your observation that the title changes are happening with a similar frequency to 10 years ago is very astute. I didn't even notice that until you pointed it out.
I agree with most of your Wrestlemania card. Though I hope we get an Intercontinental Championship match instead of a US Championship match. Also, for some reason I think Jack Swagger will be a Money in the Bank participant, and a favorite, at Wrestlemania. As a result, I predict/hope that Christian will face Evan Bourne at Wrestlemania for the ECW Championship. However, Christian would first have to win the ECW Championship... fairly soon.
Regardless, Wrestlemania will be an amazing show.

HHH and Orton have already had TWO Last Man Standing matches; their Wrestlemania match this year had best be something BIG, like Hell in a Cell or an Iron Man match, y'know?

what about the women's title I say phonix vs stratus and trish wins the title at wrestlemania

That's a pretty great WM card you have there, except for the MITB match. The one you listed above would be the worst MITB in the history of ever. Take out JBL (Since he'll probably somehow get involved in the Shawn/Taker match), take out Big Show & Umaga (since they'll probably face each other a Big Man vs Big Man match), and take out Finlay (who will probably be involved in the ECW Title match).
Put in THE Brian Kendrick and Evan Bourne. That way there would be a 6-man MITB or if they really wanted to have 8 men, they could add MVP and Shelton (who could cost each other a chance at the briefcase and blow off their feud at Backlash).
CM Punk v Cody Rhodes v Ted Dibiase v Kozlov v Kendrick v Bourne v Shelton v MVP
Much better.
The rest of your card is aces, though

My card for WM would be:
Colons/MnM (title unification)
MitB (Punk, Regal, Mike Knox, Rey, Bourne, Kofi)
Monster Match: Big Show vs Umaga
US Title: MVP vs Shelton vs Kennedy
ECW Title: Christian vs Swagger
Street Fight: Matt vs Jeff
Women's Championship: Beth vs Santino (w/Rosa)
Jericho vs Savage (w/Flair & Piper)
Orton vs HHH
Cena vs Edge

Vince McMahon could once again reprise his role as mega heel and say when he's done, WWE is done. Thus, his kids better stop thinking that they'll inherit the “Vince McMahon Empire.” Orton's kick to Vince's head might have reminded him that he won't be around forever, and that if he can't run WWE, nobody can. And because of that, he saw it necessary to send a message to the other McMahons through Triple H. Vince could even go on to say that he admires somebody as bold as Randy Orton… and Stephanie should have married the Legend Killer.
However, because the idea is being discussed on the internet, it all but assures that it won't happen on TV. But that is one scenario that would explain why Vince would turn on Triple H.
A clean finish might also be a good way to go. But with the characters involved, something out of the ordinary will probably happen. WWE could go a million different ways with that match.

It's all the same to me. Everything has been done before. This card could easily just be a Backlash or Judgment Day card. No big difference there. It just happens to be Wrestlemania. All PPV's are the same, all the TV storylines are predictable and done in the same way over and over again for years, it amazes me how many longtime fans still watch this garbage. Do you guys even realize that there has been nothing new and exciting going on for almost 10 years now?? Wrestlemania is the exact same thing as No Way Out, Survivor Series or Cyber Sunday only with a bigger arena, more pyro, a few c-list celebs and a bigger entrance stage.

really like the idea of Vinnie Mac swerving to give Orton the title. Personally I'd like to see that and then Austin's glass breaking when they're off the air to ruin the party and aid Triple H.
Am I also the only one who doesn't care about UT versus Michaels? Since I don't see a) a compelling one on one match for Taker nor b) anyone I'm dying to win the MITB match I'd put him in that. At least he'll be doing something new.
My dream card is a bit overloaded with multiperson and stipulation matches but with tri-branded PPVs every month you have to do something new to make WM special:
WWE Title No DQ: Triple H versus Orton.
World Title: Edge versus Cena (I would actually prefer this as an elimination match with Matt and Jeff, but I'll be overbooked as is)
Celebriy Thrre Man Tag: Shawn Michaels, Hulk Hogan, and Mickey Rourke versus Jericho, Dibiase, and Rhodes (Gives you Hogan/Rourke pub while hiding their lack of ability. I have already seen Michaels fight UT enough and I don't think either member of Simply Priceless is ready to win MITB).
Money in the Bank: Undertaker, MVP, Shelton, CM Punk, Rey, JBL, Evan Bourne, Christian.
Brother against Brother Streetfight: Jeff versus Matt Hardy
ECW Championship Scramble Match: Swagger, Morrison, Miz, Finley, Dreamer, and RVD (yes another one shot deal)
Women's Tag Match Santino refs: Melina and Maryse (or Gail Kim?) versus Glamazon and Rosa Mendez
I think this would make Wrestlemania 25 special

There must be a women's match, and Trish's name being thrown around, a diva's affair is guaranteed.
You're card is great and logical, but the MITB match has a lot of "bigs". Maybe that would lead to a new presentation of this match.
The Diva's -Trish and Melina vs. Michelle and Beth w/Santino and Rosa.

DOCH78-- what I am smoking is ganja. But that is neither here nor there. That'd be awesome. You can keep saying Vince won't do it, Vince won't do it-- but you know what? Savage has a DVD coming out TWO MONTHS after mania. What you think Vince won't mend fences to make some money? RIIIIIIIIGHT
Dick.
