The Piledriver Report 02.25.09: The Unpredictable Road to WrestleMania
Posted by Ronny Sarnecky on 02.25.2009

Before I begin this week's column, I need everyone's help. Next week will begin our 2009 Wrestling March Madness Tournament. This year's tournament will crown the greatest wrestler to never win a World title, meaning WWWF/WWF/WWE, NWA, AWA, TNA, WCW, and ECW (once they became "extreme," but BEFORE it became the WWECW version). So far, I have come up with 60 worthy contenders. However, I need help coming up with the last four entrants. Please submit 4 names that you think would be worthy of one of the 4 final slots into the tournament. You can either post them on the Comments Section below this article, or e-mail them to ronnysarnecky@hotmail.com.

Here is the list of the 60 competitors currently entered into the tournament. Buddy Roberts, Paul Orndorff, Roddy Piper, "Dr. D" David Schultz, Dick Murdoch, "Cowboy" Bob Orton, Jr., Greg Valentine, Don Muraco, Ken Patera, "Big" John Studd, Jimmy Snuka, Dynamite Kid, Tito Santana, Dominic Denucci, Gorilla Monsoon, Killer Kowalski, Pat Patterson, Davey Boy Smith, Jake Roberts, Blackjack Mulligan, Owen Hart, Ted DiBiase, Sr., Rick Rude, Arn Anderson, Scott Hall, Brian Pillman, Matt Hardy, William Regal, Shelton Benjamin, Fit Finlay, Bad News Brown, John Morrison, Ken Kennedy, Nikita Koloff, Terry Gordy, Steve Williams, Jushin "Thunder" Liger, Dean Malenko, Kevin Von Erich, David Von Erich, Eddie Graham, Bruiser Brody, Ernie Ladd, Tully Blanchard, Wahoo McDaniel, "Chief" Jay Strongbow, Magnum T.A., Dustin Rhodes, Big Boss Man, Antonio Rocco, Ivan Putski, The Sheik, Freddie Blassie, Abdullah the Butcher, Mr. Wrestling II, Ray Stevens, Ole Anderson, Jesse Ventura, Peter Maivia, and Nikolai Volkoff.

What a difference a month makes! Days before the Royal Rumble, it appeared that the main matches for WrestleMania were set. Triple H would be challenging Edge for the WWE World title. Randy Orton would probably win the Rumble, and take on the World Heavyweight Champion John Cena for RAW's top prize at WrestleMania. Christian was going to be revealed as being the man responsible for all of the attacks on Jeff Hardy, setting up a huge grudge match. Shawn Michaels would either have a match against his "employer" John Bradshaw Layfield, or he would have the rumored dream match against the Undertaker.

Since the Royal Rumble has passed, the WWE has shaken things up in a big way. Beginning with the Royal Rumble, Matt Hardy turned heel by attacking his brother. Despite the apparent Hardy vs. Hardy match-up on this week's SmackDown! telecast, the two brothers should battle each other at WrestleMania.

If the Royal Rumble threw a monkey wrench into the rumored plans of a Christian vs. Jeff Hardy match at WrestleMania, then the pay per view No Way Out shattered the rumored Mania line-up. First, the WWE had Shawn Michaels face JBL on the February pay per view. Not that this was a complete surprise. If the WWE wanted Shawn to fight the Undertaker at WrestleMania in a face vs. face dream match, they needed to get Michaels away from JBL. However, what was surprising was that Shawn received his "emancipation" after only one match with JBL. On a side note, I think this feud could have been so much better. First off all, the idea that Michaels is broke, while pulling in seven figures as a wrestler, seems far-fetched. Secondly, how was John Bradshaw Layfield a heel in this "feud?" Think of it from a logical standpoint. Shawn was down on his luck, and JBL offered Michaels huge money to come work for him. What horrible tasks did JBL have the "Heartbreak Kid" perform? Layfield paid Shawn to wrestle, and stand in JBL's corner. Basically, JBL was paying Michaels to do the same thing that Vince McMahon is paying Shawn to do! How does that make JBL a bad guy? The WWE should have paid homage to the David Von Erich-Jimmy Garvin and Sunshine angle. During that angle, Von Erich made Garvin and Sunshine wash his dog, dig up tree stumps, and other hard labor tasks. If JBL had Shawn drive him around in his limousine, pick up his dry cleaning, and other mundane tasks that would humiliate "Mr. WrestleMania." Now, that would have made JBL more of a heel.

The good news regarding the WWE ending the Shawn/JBL feud is that after next week's Michaels/Kozlov contest, the fans will get treated to a Shawn vs. Undertaker match on the grandest stage in the industry. Once it becomes an official match, the Undertaker and Shawn should provide the fans with some great segments to hype up their upcoming match.

Before No Way Out, I never would have believed that both Edge and John Cena would have lost their respective World title belts. I also would have been surprised, and was surprised, that Edge would be the wrestler to win the World Heavyweight championship in the RAW elimination chamber match. However, that's exactly what happened. Edge won the RAW title, and Triple H won the WWE World championship.

Since then, the WWE has been flipped upside down. Instead of having a SmackDown! wrestler take on the SmackDown! champion, and a RAW wrestler fight another RAW wrestler for that belt, we get two inter-brand match-ups for both belts. We are also getting two great match-ups that are worthy of headlining WrestleMania.

For the World Heavyweight championship, Edge will be defending the title against John Cena. This is a WrestleMania match that is three years in the making. After Edge cashed in his Money in the Bank title shot against John Cena at the 2006 New Year's Revolution pay per view, the "Rated R Superstar" caught fire. Edge proved to have arrived and be worthy of headlining WrestleMania 22 against John Cena, instead of Triple H getting the spot. Instead, Edge dropped the belt back to Cena at the Royal Rumble. However, after WrestleMania, the WWE inserted Edge back into the WWE title picture. What resulted was a classic feud between Edge and Cena that was WrestleMania worthy. Finally, they will get their chance.

They are making the most of their chance to headline a title match at WrestleMania. John Cena is playing the role of the former champion, who is demanding a title shot, due to his rematch clause. While Cena cries about wanting his shot, Edge is being the arrogant champion by antagonizing Cena. Edge refuses to give John Cena his shot, while poking fun at the former champ by doing things, such as using Cena's "the champ is here" catchphrase to get after Cena.

The other top match for WrestleMania appears to be Triple H vs. Randy Orton for the WWE World title. Over the last few months, Randy Orton has been on another stratosphere. Orton has really picked up his game, and is arguably the industry's top performer. When Orton punted Vince's head, the Randy Orton character went from heel, to mega-superstar. Sure, he took a detour for a couple of weeks when Shane McMahon became "Super Shane," and was able to stand toe to toe with Orton. However, Orton got all of his "heat" back last week after he punted Shane and delivered a picture perfect RKO to Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley.

This led to Triple H arriving on RAW to rescue the McMahon family, while acknowledging his real-life marriage to Stephanie. With Triple H now in the fold, the angle with Orton has picked up tremendously. When Triple H was on the ring apron, about to battle Legacy, the crowd was on the edge of their seats waiting to see what would happen. The best part of the segment was that Triple H didn't get his hands on Randy Orton. By missing out on the opportunity to gain revenge against Orton, this angle will only grow stronger. Even though we have seen Triple H vs. Randy Orton before, I can't wait to see how this storyline plays out. The two are showing an intensity that we haven't seen from either performer in a long time. Gone is the joke cracking Triple H. Thank God. He needs to be serious in this angle. Leave the jokes for the mid-card performers. The only way for this angle to continue to grow is by having Triple H angry and serious. If Triple H played the DX version of "The Game," this angle would be dead. Thankfully, they haven't done that.

One of the most intriguing stories leading up to this year's WrestleMania is the angle involving Chris Jericho. I loved the idea of a match involving Chris Jericho and Mickey Rourke. It would not be anywhere close to a four star match. However, if Rourke wrestled at Mania, the pay per view would get huge publicity. More importantly, Chris Jericho would gain a lot of media attention. After an MVP performance last year, Jericho deserves all of the accolades he can get. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like a Jericho/Rourke match will be taking place. This leads us to ask, who will the WWE put Jericho in the ring with? There have been several different rumors. Jericho vs. Steve Austin, Ric Flair, or a match against a handful of WWE Legends have all been speculated. Personally, I would like to see Chris Jericho face Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania 25.

When I think of Mr. WrestleMania, I don't think of Shawn Michaels. I think of Hulk Hogan. The "Hulkster" was one of the main components that helped put the pay per view on the map. In WrestleMania's infancy, it was Hulk Hogan who headlined each event. The Hulk Hogan name helped get the super card off of the ground. As much as I like Randy Savage and Paul Orndorff, neither man could have been the torchbearer during the early years of WrestleMania that Hogan was. This is the twenty-fifth WrestleMania. Hulk Hogan deserves to be on the show. What better way for the "Hulkster" to be on the show then to represent the WWE Legends that have been harassed by Chris Jericho?

This WrestleMania is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated WrestleManias for me, probably since WrestleMania XX. Despite both John Cena and Triple H probably leaving Houston as the two World Champions, I can't wait to see both of their matches. Shawn Michaels vs. the Undertaker could steal the show in a match-up that we haven't seen in a long, long time. There will be a Money in the Bank ladder match. That gimmick is always good. Christian should, hopefully, beat Jack Swagger for the ECW World title. Not to mention that Chris Jericho should have a major role in the show, with Mick Rourke in his opponents corner. Taking everything into account, this should be one of the best WrestleManias in the super show's history. If the build-up continues the way it's been going, we will probably be witnessing the greatest "Road to WrestleMania" that the WWE has ever presented. From the beginning of the year until the first Sunday in April would give us three full months of riveting story telling from a company that sometimes forgets that they can provide us with such great television. Hopefully, WrestleMania, and the WrestleMania aftermath will be even greater. And just think, we still have 40 days to go before WrestleMania 25. Hop along for an amazing ride.

This is the GREATEST Article I've read on this very site in quite some time.

Props to YOU Mr Sarnecky for talking candidly and nicely about the upcoming Mania.

FINALLY someone who is talking about the current product WITHOUT the WHOLE BITCHING we're getting more and more from the biased and bland IWC each day and night.

Ronny you're spot on, If someone SHOULD Face Jericho at Mania it's The One and Only "Mr WrestleMania" not named The Undertaker aka the most OVER and biggest character in Pro wrestling History.

Hulk Frickin Hogan handing Chris Jericho ass to death would be one of the greatest things I've seen in a long time.

The WWE is on fire right now, The Rumble Match was brillant and so was NWO Chambers.

The storyline has been consistant all year long so far and both RAW and SD ! are getting better and better storyline wise.

Edge/Cena and HHH/RKO are old feuds but they've totally reinvejunated both of them with having The Biggest Heel in the Business aka Vickie G siding with her beloved one Edge (best heel in the business since years alongside Kurt Angle).

Edge vs Cena in the past had Lita siding with The R Rated Superstar.

Now it will be Edge and the GM of both RAW and SD ! that will give hell (in a cell ?) to Da Champ for getting the WHC Back.

Cena and Edge always delivered in the past, be it at Slam or Unforgiven.

Now it will probably be their farewell match together (not sure about it though, I do hope Edge will retain at Mania and HHH too, so the fans will go home happy with Trips going over in the last match of the night).

Both Edge and HunThor retaining gold would be more exciting than the opposite to me.

And yes HOGAN has to be the man putting Jericho back into his (mid carder for life) place.

Taker vs Michaels would easily be MOTY candidate if not for....One Vladimir Kozlov.....

Something tells me the match could very well ending up being a triple threat match or....Undefeated Streak vs Mania Streak.....Kozlov vs Taker one on one.....

You did forget to mention the build to the ultra exciting Hardy vs Hardy feud and match up.

Mattitude is becoming one hell of a heel now and I do hope he will destroy his younger, overpushed, overdrugged Emo Warrior Brother to death at Mania.

Finally the M.I.T.B should steal the show like each year with it being the Spotfest extravaganza of the Superbowl of Pro Wrestling.

This year's edition is even more unpredictable than ever with a few possible winners. (M.V.P/Morrison/Benjamin/Kennedy).

Do you know what I found nice about Flair vs Michaels?

JR And Lawler didn't talk too much, letting the match tell the story to maximum effect.

Don West, take notes
I can see it now.

West: OH MY GOD!!! HE HUGGED HIM AFTER THE MATCH!
Tenay: THIS IS WHAT TNA IS ALL ABOUT!!! WE ARE WRESTLING!!!
West: FLAIR'S CAREER IS OVER, CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?
Tenay: LETS KEEP SHOUTING!!!!!!!

God I hate them

I'd like to thank you for a brilliant article. It's about time that we get some articles on this website that remind us why we are fans. Thank you.

If you're not including ROH as a world title, I'd put up Bryan Danielson in the tournament.

Also, I don't believe I saw Curt Hennig's name there.

Nice article but I most disagree with Jericho vs. Hogan, unless by some miracle Hogan does the job, unlike Austin in his last appearance or Ric Flair, Hogan hasn't even put SHAWN MICHAELS of all people over and didn't put Orton over either. So unless this is the Hogan of 02 who will put people over, I don't want him anywhere on my screen. I understand he's a huge part of Wrestlemania, but he's there every year it seems -_-

Jerichos midcard days are over, hes too good for that now.

Are you counting world titles from Japan i.e. GHC, Triple Crown etc.?

If not, Kobashi, Misawa, Muta and a whole host of others are missing.

Otherwise: Christopher Daniels NEEDS to be on this list. I still can't believe TNA never gave him the ball.

Posted By: Guest#6671 (Guest)  on February 25, 2009 at 11:08 AM

Curt Hennig is not in there because he was AWA world champion. Also correct me if I am wrong but didn't Rick Rude hold the NWA title while WCW still had sanctioning and actually lose sanctioning of the NWA while he held the belt so they renamed it the International title? I thought when he won it that it was still the NWA title which would exclude him from the list of 60.

Posted By: Chubby (Guest)  on February 25, 2009 at 11:09 AM

Jericho HAS to face Austin on WM25. Jericho is the prick heel - and he needs to get his ass kicked (SCSA is going into the hall of fame, and kicking ass is what he does).

Plus - you put Hogan in the ring - and I guarantee that more people will be cheering for Jericho (well - at least more people than the WWE would want).

Hogan returns happen all the time (or at least they seem to because he keeps himself in the spotlight). SCSA has been basically invisible so his return would actually mean something.

I gave you a ton of suggestions that you left out yet you put in Morrison, Kennedy and Benjamin?

Reconsider Junkyard Dog, One Man Gang, King Kong Bundy, The Great Kabuki, Kevin Sullivan, Adrian Adonis, Ivan Koloff, Bobby Eaton and Terry Taylor.

Would Abdullah qualify?

Posted By: Curtis (Guest)  on February 25, 2009 at 12:06 PM

Johnny Saint! Dave Taylor!

If need be, Ken Shamrock, he had a time where it was highly believable he could be world champ.

Posted By: Cakfa (Guest)  on February 25, 2009 at 12:10 PM

I really don't think Jericho is facing Rourke, Hogan or Austin. I don't know where it's going, but I don't see any of those three getting in the ring. Or Flair for that matter.

M:-X called "Savage vs Jericho" at Mania and I hope he's right!!

Ha "Hogan retuns more to the E than Austin" , ha ha ha good april fool joke when you look at the past months and appeareances of both guys on the E.

Any single crowd in the world is eating Hogan's entrance alone UP Thunderous POP STYLE.

The Hulkster is the most over guy in the company HISTORY and IS The First and REAL Mr WrestleMania.

People would go absolutely apeshit for every single of his gesture and moves against the ultra hated Jericho.

Bank On It Brother !

Agreed chubby, Rick Rude was NWA World Heavyweight Champion. How can you not count holding the BIG GOLD BELT as being a former world champion?
I am too lazy to check the stats on the these wrestlers though, but if they weren't champions with non of the promotions mentioned above I nominate: Akeem, Big Boss Man, Doink the Clown (heel), Dick Slater, Bunkhouse Buck, Andre the Giant (his 3 second reign should NOT count!), Reid Flair, David Flair, Tatanka, Bam Bam Bigelow, Bobby Lashley (did he win anything aside from the WWECW title?). Im sure I'm forgetting someone too. Pick any 5, since Rick Rude is out.
Too bad fans will vote for everything in recent memory as opposed to those who were really the best ones. Ted Dibiase better be in the finals...

How about Sean Waltman, Jerry Lawler, Dustin Rhodes and Arn Anderson

Posted By: AdamS (Guest)  on February 25, 2009 at 01:50 PM

Christopher Daniels should be on that list. What about Brian Pillman?

Posted By: Tim (Guest)  on February 25, 2009 at 02:04 PM

Yes! Brian Pillman!

Also, add 'togan death grip' Haku, M. Tanaka (or was he ECW Champion?),Rick Steiner, Psychosis, Vampiro and Villano IV not to be confused with Villano VI.

Also, would this NOT be the perfect tournament to debut Nick Hogan? Instant target for all who never won a title.
Also, how are you going to rank them? I recommend using their debut year as a method of ranking #1 to 64.

Posted By: Guest#8995 (Guest)  on February 25, 2009 at 02:45 PM

Mr. Perfect, Lance Storm, Test, and Christopher Daniels wouldn't be bad choices for March Madness

Posted By: Aaron (Guest)  on February 25, 2009 at 02:54 PM

You are correct that most years we can pinpoint the matches that will headline Wrestlemania. That is usually a good thing. Rock/Austin, Lesnar/Angle, Austin/HBK, Hogan/Andre, HBK/Hart. All were highly anticipated matches with stars in their prime. The fact that they don't have any of those type matches says that this is not going to be one of those memorable Wrestlemanias. The WWE has plenty of stars they can put into matches with each other and they will pull off some great matches, but there's no build up, theres no absolute must watch, been dying to see it, type event.
And I would not want to see Hogan against Jericho. Hogan is the star that made Wrestlemania the event it is, but he's suffering from media overload. His horrible show on VH1, the episode with his son, the constant turmoil with his no talent daughter. He's become a joke. Give the spot to Austin or put Piper or Steamboat or some older guys in there to battle him. Anyone but Hogan.

Posted By: Ghost of Marlon Brando (Guest)  on February 25, 2009 at 03:57 PM

Great article Ronny. I'm sorry to say, but since the brand split I haven't been as excited about watching the World title matches at Wrestlemania. Call me old school, but the whole "two world champions" thing just doesn't cut it.
However, I do enjoy the show for the mid-card matches, and I'm especially looking forward to HBK-Taker, MITB, and hopefully the apex of the Hardy vs. Hardy feud.
I think that Austin has to be the one to fight Jericho. I mean as important as Hogan was to establish this event, imagine the pop Austin would get when the glass shatters! Then they could have Rourke come in and do the 'Ram Jam' after Jericho receives a Stunner, then they could have Rourke and Stone Cold share some Steveweisers.
Overall I can't wait for Wrestlemania this year!

Well, Chris, I will gladly be a damn fool as you call it. Michaels is cute and all for an old dude, but I think that the E would be better made to build on someone with a chance of beating Taker. Raises the question to the online crowd of if he would actually job? To Koslov, it is a question where a win makes the Russian a monster and the lost keeps the streak alive for Undertaker. I have no interest in seeing Michaels come out and play good cop/bad cop against the dead man win or loose.

Yeah dream match, but not dream booking...

i would vote for jake roberts. in my opinion one of the best stick man ever in wwe/wwf. and i love his in ring psychology. give him the award for best wrestler to never win a world title.

i agree with "that guy". they should book taker against someone who would profit from beating taker at mania. michaels is already established and wwe needs superstars for our generation. i dont know if koslov would necesarely be the guy for the job but if its between him and michaels gotta go with koslov. michales cant wrestle forever and koslov makes for a great heel. of course wwe will probably just mess it up like they did with chris masters who was a promising heel that they tried to push then just put him under the radar. theyll probably just have taker win anyways lol.

For the tournament, I would like to suggest Great Muta, MVP, Dino Bravo, and Hercules. I know I'm missing someone better than the last two, but I'm too lazy to think of someone at the moment.

Georgeous George Wagner, Haku, Ultimo Dragon, The Honky Tonk Man,

For the tournament:

Tatanka

Undefeated for two years in the WWF but still never held a title.

Barrry Windham
Rick Mortan
Honky Tonky Man
Christopher Daniels

totally agree.

Mr. Wrestlemania is HULK HOGAN. Anyone else assuming that name is simply foolish. When you think of wrestling, you think of Hulk Hogan. When you think of WrestleMania, you think of Hulk Hogan.

And more than ever, WWE NEEDS Hogan to come in and save us from the garbage product that they have become.

Posted By: Joe Mastronardo (Guest)  on February 26, 2009 at 01:28 PM

Oh my crap i pray to all the JBL's that be that this does not happen, HHH laying down to Hogan was god awful enough( i forgot if it got worst match of the year or not, i know it was a contender)
But after the great build, they need a legend that can still work,or at least move.
My personal vote is for Savage(hell even Warrior would be a solid choice)
Barring either of these then you can sum the best choice into one word, Vader
