- Video Service Corp. sent out the following press release today:
Mr. Andy Kaufman's Gone Wrestling!
Toronto, ON (April 22, 2009) – A full twenty five years after his death, Video Service Corp celebrates Andy Kaufman's unique brand of comedy with the release in Canada of My Breakfast With Blassie and I'm From Hollywood on May 12, 2009, with a suggested retail price of $24.98 for the two DVD set. Both films offer insight into the state of mind of Kaufman before his fatal cancer diagnosis, which some people to this day think was a hoax. Kaufman was memorably portrayed by Jim Carrey in the Milos Forman biopic Man On the Moon, which focused on Kaufman's career and life, including his later obsession with professional wrestling.
My Breakfast With Blassie, filmed in 1983, features Kaufman and wrestling legend Fred Blassie, self-proclaimed King of Men and coiner of the phrase "pencil-necked geek," as they meet for breakfast and discuss wrestling, hygiene, stardom and whether to eat bacon or sausage. This classic piece of performance art from one of our greatest comedians was deemed, "often crude, but always creative," by TV Guide and also features a heaping plate of bonus features, including lost footage of Kaufman, bonus footage, a making-of feature and more.
Kaufman's obsession with professional wrestling was often suspected of being an act, an angry spoof of the nexus of sport and sideshow – the pro wrestling scene. The 1989 film I'm From Hollywood chronicles Kaufman's transformation into a wrestling heel like none other, taking a wrestling match into a feud against trainer Jerry Lawler and the state of Tennessee, as only Kaufman could. This is Kaufman at his most dangerous, exposing the soft white underbelly of American culture, while sacrificing his own career to a level of performance art that has not been replicated since his death on May 16, 1984. Bonus features for this film include a hilarious photo gallery of letters Kaufman received from women ready to take him on after he publicly taunted female wrestlers, commentary from producer Lynne Marguilies, footage of Jerry Lawler at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood and more. "Given our commitment to bringing quality comedy and classic performances to DVD, we're thrilled to team with Johnny Legend and Lynne Marguilies to package these films together in this DVD set," stated VSC President Jonathan Gross, "Andy Kaufman made a career creating his own theatre of the absurd that blurred the lines between comedy and public disturbance long before Tom Green, Sascha Baron Cohen and Johnny Knoxville's crew."
About Video Service Corp.
Since its 1993 founding by former rock critic Jonathan Gross, Video Service Corp has been a leader in releasing cult films on DVD, including Bruce McDonald's Hard Core Logo, Kenny and Spenny's first feature, Pitch, and the women in prison classic Chained Heat
- CZW sent out the following announcement today:
BLOOD PRESSURE: RISING!
Saturday, May 9th - 730PM
The CZW Arena
7 W. Ritner Street, South Philly
and...
The Bloodhound Benefit
Saturday, May 9th - 230PM (subject to change)
The CZW Arena
4/22 - CZW and MBA to team up to honor the CZW "Bloodhound" as part of a May 9th Doubleheader!
When a member of the CZW family is down, the Combat Zone has always been known to close ranks and help out whenever possible. On the afternoon of May 9th, prior to the evening's "Blood Pressure: Rising" event, CZW and the MBA will do just that as it presents a special benefit show to honor Kenneth Sikes, known to longtime CZW fans and those close to the Combat Zone as the "Bloodhound". Ken has long been a member of the CZW extended family, both as a contributor and as a fan, and is unfortunately suffering from a debilitating disease that has left him with mounting medical bills. Below is a letter from Ken to the CZW family, and fans...
"I just heard from John that you guys have decided to honor me with a benefit show on the Afternoon of the 9th, so I wanted to get in touch with you to let you know how thankful I am. God bless you, John and all my guys & girls down at CZW. You have brought tears to my eyes. I thought I would share some info about my situation so peole can be aware of the disease I am suffering from.
I've been there since the beginning of CZW. I've Been with them since the warehouse in Sewell and watched these young guys grow to men. I Wrote for the CZW Program as The Bloodhound where I feuded with Ed-O-Mac and I also reviewed CZW online for a few different websites. Been there thru the ups and downs.
A little about my run with this disease. What I have is called CIDP. CIDP (chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy) is a rare disorder of the peripheral nerves characterized by gradually increasing weakness of the legs and the arms. It is caused by damage to the covering of the nerves, called myelin. It can start at any age and in both genders. Weakness occurs over two or more months. Current theory holds that the body's immune system which normally protects it, perceives myelin as foreign and attacks it. Because of the attacks on my nerves, I have constant shooting pains like electrical shocks thruout my body and my legs have given out several times causing me to fall. I now walk with the assistance of a walker. The disease is incurable. It can be put into remission. I am currently undergoing treatments with High dose intravenous immune globulins (IVIG), protective blood proteins obtained from healthy volunteers. These will help reverse the process and put it into remission. I go once a week for three months for a four and a half hour infusion thru an IV. After this we'll start trying to spread out the treatments and see what happens. Treatments are not cheap: $5,000 a treatment. It is a rare disese: one to three people out of a million get it each year. They suspect it is caused by trauma or infection in the body. They believe mine was caused by a case of blood poisoning I got from a staph infection back in October of last year. One guy where I go for treatment developed his symptoms after a flu shot. Sometimes it comes on quickly and other times quit slow.
Most insidious of all is that to look at us, most times you have no idea of the pain we are going thru. I hate this disease and what it has done to me. I need assistance to do daily tasks. I need assistance to walk or climb steps. I need assistance to live. But, I'll make it. Thru the love, prayers and help of my family and friends and a lot of hard work on my part as well. Things like what you guys are doing convince me that it is worth the fight. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Arena...
Thanks,
Ken Sikes"
Admission to the Bloodhound Benefit will be free with a donation to help Ken's family with the mounting medical bills. The entire CZW roster will be on hand to take part in this special tribute to a long time supporter of the Combat Zone, and we hope you the CZW fans can join us...

I'm still a mark for The Funker and respect him more than almost anyone but he's 65 years old in June. He really shouldn't be wrestling anymore

They are resetting the Monday Night Wars episodes?!?!?!? That's terrible, the best stuff was just about to come up!!

24/7 is pissing me off - we finally get to the good part of the Monday Night Wars, and they kill it to one show a month so we can get a bunch of crap matches from 1995 instead?

Breakfast With Blassie is pretty awesome stuff. The conversation about how Freddie hates shaking hands is great.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm not about to tell a grown-ass man (who happens to be a legend in his industry) what he should or shouldn't do to make a living.
Maybe that's just me though.

ive actually wrestled ruckus before. damn him and his success.

Ah, Andy Kaufman...the David Arquette of the 70s. The things they've both contributed to wrestling over the years are countless.
...and by countless, I mean the contributions can be counted on one hand. And by one hand, I mean one finger...particularly the middle one.

Dear Terry Funk
Please do not wrestle ever again. Stop before you die in the ring. Do us all a favor. Thank you.

Not for nothing, but I already own this DVD, as it came out years ago...both the Dinner w/ Blassie and I'm From Hollywood are on the same DVD. I got it for $9.99...yeah there are no extra's, but I ouldnt pay $24.99 for it...

The best part of Breakfast with Blassie is when Blassie rubs an Asian woman's belly and says "Little Buddha!"

I think it's way too late to be showing Survivor Series & Armagedoon in FUCKING MAY.
Posted By: John (Guest) on April 23, 2009 at 03:39 PM
How can you possibly compare Kaufman to Arquette?? Kaufman's involvement with Lawler was before I was born and I've seen so many segments on various outlets. Arquette was relatively recent and sometimes I forget it even happened!
I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I'm so glad some people have their priorities in order.

Lycan, if you really think Andy Kautman contributed nothing to wrestling you're a fucking idiot.
He and Lawler kickstarted the wrestling
boom in the 80's long before anyone knew who Hulk Hogan was.

FUNK YEAH! terry is my favorite legend. the man retires once every decade, but i don't think he'll ever quit. he'd have to die, and i don't think that will happen either.

No, the best part is when the waitress walks away Freddie says, "Now we don't have to leave her a tip".

Hey moron,
They're still gonna continue with the current Monday Night War continuity, this just gives new subscribers the chance to watch it all from the beginning. I hate it when assholes who don't know shit about shit complain about things they're wrong about.

Hey even bigger moron, he was complaining that throughout that entire update that spans over a month, there's only ONE set of new 1997 MNW episodes. Whereas normally there's a new set every other week. I'm also upset about this, as I don't give a shit about either show in 1995. Let's get into 1998 already, Classics on Demand! The MNW goes until 2001, and at 2 episodes a month, it'll be 2015 before a reset will be necessary.
I'm willing to bet that the REAL reason behind the reset happening so soon is that they're going to have to show Benoit on the 1998-onward episodes, unless they want to start cutting out HUGE parts of episodes.

I don't know what's worse- The Funker unable to quit wrestling or the piece of sh!t promoters who continue to put him in the ring. You want the Funker to be at your show? Then pay him what you would have payed him to wrestle but just let him be an honored guest and sign autographs or be a 'ringside enforcer' (ala Flair at WM) or something.
