Jim Ross Discusses Backlash, WWE Announce Teams, Edge and Christian, More
Posted by Larry Csonka on 04.27.2009

- Jim Ross has a new blog entry up, here are the highlights:

On Backlash: Backlash is in the books and I thought WWE produced a solid, wrestling oriented event. Edge-Cena was a strong show closer. Both men worked hard, showed great intensity & the closing moments was surprising, crowned a new champion, and created a Cena-Show issue. Last Man Standing matches are challenging for all involved but I thought everyone "carried their share of the water." (Thanks Al Swearingen.")

On Working With King and Cole: I enjoyed working with Cole & King at the announce table. We did not get this confirmed until Sunday afternoon but I hope we were able to do a good job for those of you that watched WWE's 2nd PPV in the month of April. I'm still working to define my new broadcast role which is a major adjustment in timing not to mention working a 3 man booth can be challenging.

On the Future of the PPV Announce Teams: All three announce teams will be in action going forward @ WWE PPV's in accordance w/ the brand separation. That gets deserving, young announcers like Matt Striker, Todd Grisham, and Josh Mathews in the game.

On Edge and Christian: Loved the interaction w/ Edge & Christian as it felt both fresh & nostalgic.

DaCinder you're the real joke, Backlash was a phenomenal ppv.

No mention from JR of being the object of Santina's affection?

I thought Backlash was an alright PPV. HHH/Orton et. al. match was better than Mania. The rest of the show was solid. A bit predictable, Edge was going to win so SD had a title, Batista distracting HHH, Jeff winning. Nice to see Christian win the ECW belt. Even Punk vs. Kane was watchable. I did not like Santina/JR crap...leave the man alone, why do they get off trying to embarass JR all the time. Also, would have been nice to see Punk cash in the MITB on Edge.

"I enjoyed working with Cole & King at the announce table."

Stop fucking lying JR! Nobody enjoys working with Cole on any level!

Why would you when you look him in the face and try and figure out how he's the worst ever at his job and yet stayed employed for 12 f'n years!

Um, did gool 'ol JR say "wrestling oriented event". Hhmm. I thought they're called entertainers, or superstars, not wrestlers. Did he actually say "wrestling".

Sshhh.

Cole? Worst ever? I present the cases of Craig DeGeorge, Sean Mooney, and Mike Adamle. That's just WWF/E play-by-play guys, the list gets worse. Rob Bartlett... Susan Saint James (on the grand stage of Wrestlemania, no less.) David Crockett, Sean Mooney, Mark Madden... I'm gonna stop there.

The build up to an Edge vs. Christian fued is SWEET! They were my favorite Tag Team, and both are good singles competitors, and a new fued is refreshing in that with Christian gone for the last 3 years they're interaction has a new feel about and this time around Edge is the HEEL and Christian is the FACE! After both are done with their title reigns on their brands E vs. C = Epic Win

Challenge accepted!

Craig DeGeorge: Awful, but pretty much just did backstage "news" segments. Harmless, and he only lasted a few years.

Sean Mooney: Boring as sin and a bad fit. Gets bonus "shit" points for being the one who recommended Cole for the job. Dull style but wasn't overly forced like Cole was. Probably the only one who comes close to being as bad but was only around a few years.

Mike Adamle: Only behind the mic for less than a year. Was forced upon the audience by Vince because he wanted to have a legitimate sports guy on commentary. Became entertaining only because his mistakes was like a car wreck - you couldn't turn away. I was less agonized by him in his short time than Cole in 12 years.

David Crockett: Infinitely better than Cole. Legimitate enthusiasm and a voice for wrestling. A bit pandering, yes, and too excited over little things, but I never questioned his interest in the industry (unlike Cole who always acted like he was above everyone else).

Mark Madden: Obnoxious, but again, he legitimately loved and enjoyed being in the business. A definite "mark" for himself (no pun intended) and went overboard trying to be the bad guy announcer. But still did a decent job by comparison.

A few more I'll add with reputations for sucking: Don West and Todd Pettingill. West is loud and overbearing, but he bothered to learn about the industry and steadily improved over time. And if he doesn't legitimately enjoy pro wrestling, at least he pretends well enough. I at least believe he likes wrestling. Cole still can't hide his disdain for this profession.

Only one who possibly comes close to being a wet bag of Cole shit is Pettingill. His hiring showed that Vince was completely out of touch with who his audience was at the time - he thought a NY DJ whose main demo was teenage girls would fit in with the WWF audience. He may be worse than Cole, but Vince wisely cut ties after about 5 years. Cole has the longer track record of consistent awfulness.

Finally, you can't count the one-shot announcers you named. Rob Bartlett, Susan Saint James (who you mentioned) along with Art Donovan, Jason Hervey, and the late Ray Combs. Can't compare one shit performance to 12 years of constant shit that Cole delivered.

Anyone else you want to try to pass off as less horrendous than Michael Cole? You won't be able to.

Michael Cole absolutely owned JR during that Santina segment, just goes to show Cole's improving quite a bit & at least JR can admit that in his blog.
