-So tonight we're coming off the heels of Backlash that saw both World Titles change hands, and the two top faces in the company leave on stretchers. Now the Age of Orton resumes as he enters Raw as WWE Champion for the first time in a year, and will likely need a challenger for the upcoming Judgment Day pay per view. Logically we can assume that that challenger will be another former Evolution teammate. Unless Triple H decides to no-sell the punt again ala Wrestlemania XXIV.
-Live from Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, CT
-Hosted by Michael Cole & Jerry "The King" Lawler
-Lillian welcomes Vickie Guerrero to open the show. Vickie says she is so proud that last night her husband Edge captured the World Title by beating John Cena. However she says as the GM of Raw it is her honor to introduce the new WWE Champion Randy Orton. Orton comes out to a nice pop, and is flanked by Legacy. Orton soaks in the moment posing on each turnbuckle holding the belt high. Orton says the McMahon family is mourning, because their last hope, protector, and champion has fallen. Orton says after five long years last night he beat Triple H. He didn't just pin him, but he beat him by kicking him in the skull and putting him out. He did exactly what he said he was going to do. He says no other superstar backstage can say that, and none of the fans can either. Orton says all of the fans are all exactly the same. He says those in their 20's and younger hope for the big things, but the odds are they will all amount to nothing. Orton says those in their 30's and older already are nothing. But not him. He is a success. Orton says he has made history, and has created a Legacy that has resulted in the destruction of the entire McMahon family. A recap package is shown of all the McAttacks over the past few months. Vickie tells Randy that she is so excited that he is on her show as the WWE Champion. She is happy to announce that his first defense will be at Judgment Day, and will be against the winner of tonights number one contender match between Big Show and Batista. Vickie says until then on behalf of herself and the fans of Raw congratulations. Orton says the people need to know something. He is all that they have left. They don't have to like him, but they have no choice but to respect him. Not just the fans, but the superstars in the locker room. He puts them on notice that Vickie may be the GM, but they will all answer to him. He says if he doesn't get the respect he deserves they will all end up like Triple H. He doesn't care if they've been here a day or a year they will all respect him. That brings out MVP of all people? Holy elevation Batman! MVP introduces himself to Orton, and says what Orton has done is extremely impressive. He puts Orton on notice though because he is the US Champion and he doesn't answer to anyone. Dibiase grabs the mic and says he may be new to Raw, but he doesn't appear to be too bright. He tells MVP that unless he wants his first night on Raw to be the worst night of his life he needs to turn around and go back to the locker room. MVP tells him to check himself lackey because Randy didn't give him permission to speak. He says he ain't goin nowhere. He tells Orton he doesn't have a couple Abercrombie and Fitch models to do his talkin for him. He says this isn't a dictatorship, and last time he checked this isn't the Randy Orton show. He didn't come here to be talked down to, and neither did the fans in the arena. He says if Batista or Big Show can't beat him at Judgment Day then he'd be happy to take care of that. Cody grabs the mic, and begs Orton to let them make an example out of MVP. He says they will show the locker room what happens when they cross the Legacy. Orton whispers in Vickie's ear, and she announces that tonight MVP will face Randy Orton tonight in a Champion vs. Champion match. I can imagine MVP was doing cartwheels in the locker room when he showed up and read tonights script.
-Cole and Lawler go over some of the draft picks.
The Brian Kendrick vs. Kofi Kingston
Kendrick tells Lillian to "listen close dollface because he's only going to say this once. Its not Brian Kendrick, it's THE Brian Kendrick." Kendrick takes control early with a knee and a headlock. Kofi leapfrogs Kendrick off the ropes, but gets a slap to the face. After some acrobatics from both guys Kendrick hits a drop toehold sending Kofi face first into the buckle. Irish whip by Kendrick sends Kofi into the corner, but a charge sees him backdropped to the apron. Kendrick delivers a shoulder from the apron, and then a missile dropkick gets a two count. Kendrick locks in a seated cobra clutch, but Kofi armdrags out. Kofi delivers a pair of chops, and a jumping clothesline off the ropes. Double legdrop connects for two. Kofi hits the ropes, but a dropkick from Kendrick connects for two. Kendrick goes for sliced bread, but Kofi flips out. Second rope crossbody connects for Kofi, but Kendrick rolls through for a two count. Kofi hits the Trouble in Paradise from there which finishes at 2:39. Well that was criminally short. About as good of a match as you could squeeze into 2 ½ minutes. Winner: Kofi Kingston (Pinfall-Trouble in Paradise **)
-Still photos are shown recapping the Last Man Standing match from Backlash. Cole says its "doubtful" Cena will be here tonight.
-Show meets Vickie in her locker room, and Vickie thanks him for what he did last night. She says she knows he didn't do it for her, and didn't do it for Edge, but did it for himself because he's so professional. Show thanks her for putting him in the number one contenders match, and goes for a kiss but she pulls back. He tells her she knows its going to get awful lonely on Monday nights, but she says for the sake of Raw everything from here on out will be strictly professional. Show says he understands because she's the boss.
Santina Marella, Kelly Kelly, Brie Bella, & Mickie James vs. Maryse, Beth Phoenix, Rosa Mendez, & Jillian Hall
Santina is on the face team which amuses me greatly. The faces all got separate entrances while the heels enter as a unit. Santina starts the match with Beth, but when he realizes who the opponent is he tries to tag. Beth hits a chop, and Santino tags in Brie. Beth hits a bodyslam on Brie and then mounts with a pair of punches. Tag to Jillian who goes for a cartwheel legdrop which misses. Brie heads under the ring where she finds Nikki and HORNSWOGGLE~! Horny chases Rosa off, and Maryse and Beth chase him back under the ring. The check after him and get he sprays the fire extinguisher on them. Meanwhile Santina rolls up Jillian to pick up the win at 1:43. Afterwards as the face divas celebrate Hornswoggle slides underneath the ring and gets a look up Santina's skirt. Needless to say he was not pleased with what he saw. Mickie pulls her skirt up revealing the bulge and Hornswoggle faints before sprinting to the locker room in horror. Total slapstick comedy match, and I loved every minute of it. Sue me. Not sure how you rate it, because it wasn't much of a match, but it was hilarious. Winners: Santina Marella, Kelly Kelly, Brie Bella, & Mickie James (Santina pins Jillian-Rollup *)
-More recaps of the Raw draft picks
Matt Hardy vs. Goldust
Matt comes out wearing a cast selling the arm injury from the night before. He says last night Jeff proved that he is nothing more than a heartless, uncaring, barbarian. As a result he suffered a broken hand, but he did not quit. He says he's not a quitter, and he's never quit anything in his entire life. He says after Jeff broke his hand he had no other option. Matt says he has no options tonight as he is being forced to wrestle. He says he wants all the fans to know that tonight he is wrestling under protest. Hey it's a Goldust sighting! Matt plays keep away diving to the ropes to keep from locking up. Finally as the Goldust complains to the ref, Matt sneaks up from behind and delivers a shot with the cast to pick up the win at 1:05. So I guess Matt is going to be Bob Orton 2009? Winner: Matt Hardy (Pinfall-Cast Shot DUD)
Randy Orton vs. Montel Vontavious Porter
Well we shall see how serious they were about elevating MVP here. He doesn't have to win, but this should be competitive. Orton pushes MVP into the corner, and breaks clean and then talks some trash. Orton grabs a side headlock, and then stops a counter attempt by MVP with a shot to the back of the head. Orton grabs a front face lock, which MVP reverses into a hammerlock. Orton counters with a firemans carry for two, and grabs a hammerlock of his own. MVP counters into an armbar as the crowd delivers dueling "Lets go Randy! Randy Sucks!" chants. Orton comes out of the armbar with a knee to the gut, and takes control with a series of kicks. MVP fights back with right hands, and then buries a few knees into the abs of Orton. Kneedrop connects for a two count for MVP. Orton fires back with a trio of European upper cuts in the corner. Irish whip sends MVP to the corner, but he moves out of the way of an Orton charge and hits an armbar. Orton comes out of that and rams MVP into the top buckle. Irish whip again sends MVP into the corner, but MVP again moves out of the way of a charge and drives Orton face first into the second buckle. MVP hits the drive by kick in the corner sending Orton to the floor as we head to break. Back from commercial and Orton has a chinlock applied. Yeah, I'm shocked too. MVP elbows out of the headlock, but gets hit with the inverted backbreaker for two. Orton goes back to the chinlock, and MVP counters out this time with a back suplex. Both guys pull themselves to their feet, and they exchange blows in the middle. MVP hits the ropes, but runs into a back elbow from Orton. Orton hits the ropes, but he runs into a throw from MVP. MVP charges at Orton in the corner, but runs into a boot. He comes right back with a facebuster, and that sets Orton up for BALLIN! The elbow gets a two count, and MVP then leapfrogs a charging Orton in the corner. MVP goes for the drive by kick again, but Orton ducks and tosses him to the floor. Shane McMahon runs in and destroys Orton with a kendo stick before getting run off by Legacy. Shane runs through the crowd and stares down Team No Pants from a skybox. No bell, but the run in came at about 11:15. Great booking actually as MVP obviously couldn't go over the new champ clean, but they booked him as Orton's equal before the run in. Normally I hate DQ's, but this one made sense. Winner: No Contest (Outside Interference ***)
-More Backlash recap, and then another look back at the ending of the Last Man Standing Match.
-More recap of Raw's draft picks
-The Miz is out for a promo. He says we are looking at the single most valuable draft pick in the entire WWE. He says he is a television icon. He was on MTV for years, and was the face of the network. Last year he was on ECW, Smackdown, and Raw and was winning titles. He says if you google is name he will have more hits than all the fans. He says Lauren Conrad, Paris Hilton, Hillary, and Haley Duff all have something in common. They are all in his phone, and they don't know who any of the fans are. He says he has come to Raw to make an impact. He is here to take on the biggest and baddest superstar on this show, and take him down on his very first night. He is here to challenge John Cena. He calls for a referee. He says he knows Cena was in a last man standing match, but he is not one to make excuses. He says the spotlight is on Cena, and asks him to step up to the plate. Cena's music plays, but of course he doesn't come out. Miz asks if Cena is scared of him. He asks if he is going to run and hide or is he going to face him like a man. He asks what he has to do to get him out here, does he have to belittle him. He says Cena's always says "you can't see me," and Miz says he's right he can't see him. Miz says he'll wait, because Cena always says you can't see him. Miz says he's right because his movies aren't in theaters long enough. He says he's sick of seeing these same superstars in main events day after day, week after week, year after year. The Miz is on Raw to step up and grab the brass ring. Tonight he challenged Cena, and he declined so that makes The Miz the winner by forfeit. He says that makes The Miz, 1 John Cena, 0. He tells Lillian to stand up and make it official. Lillian refuses, so Miz grabs her microphone and announces it himself. So last night Cena and HHH get stretchered off, and tonight the WWE seems to be making a concerted effort to create a few new stars out of the blue? Did they just get an internet connection at Titan Tower?
The Colons vs. Jamie Noble and Chavo Guerrero
Wow is that not the biggest jobber team that ever jobbed or what? Chavo starts with Carlito and grabs a wristlock which he turns into an armbar. Carlito counters into an armwringer, and Chavo comes back with a takedown. Chavo runs into a monkeyflip, and Primo tags in. Carlito hits a drop toehold and Primo follows with a diving headbutt off the ropes. Chavo heads to the floor and Jamie runs in catching a dropkick sending him outside too. Jamie provides a distraction allowing Chavo to attack from behind sending Primo to the floor. Chavo sends Primo into the corner, and tags in Noble who connects with a neckbreaker for two. Noble locks in a chinlock, but Primo elbows out. Noble goes for a back suplex, but Primo falls on top for two. Noble stops a tag, and tags in Chavo who comes in with a splash for two. Primo charges into a back elbow, but Chavo comes off the top rope running into a dropkick. Hot tag to Carlito as Noble tags in as well. Carlito connects with a backdrop, and a spinebuster gets two. Carlito gets backdropped to the apron, but stops a sneak attack from Chavo by elbowing him to the floor. Carlito drops Noble down on the top rope, and then delivers a springboard off both ropes with a senton for two. Chavo broke up the count from the floor, but gets hit with a suicide dive from Primo. Carlito then connects with a backstabber to Noble to pick up the win at 4:24. Nothing special, but not bad for the time it got. Winners: The Colons (Carlito pins Noble-Back Stabber **)
-Josh Mathews asks Batista if he feels responsible for HHH losing the title last night. Batista says he feels for HHH, because he knows what he's going through. He says tonight he's going to go out and beat Big Show, and then he's going to hurt Orton. Just like Orton hurt HHH and HHH's family. Then he's going to take away what matters most to Orton. The WWE Title.
-Vickie is back out to make an announcement. She reminds us of recent current events, and shows the same recap package of Orton destroying the McMahon's that we saw earlier. I thought she was going to announce that she had contracted the swine flu. She announces next week's main event will be Randy Orton vs. Shane McMahon.
Number One Contender's Match: The Big Show vs. Batista
Batista goes for a go behind takedown, but can't lift Show. Show goes for the chokeslam quickly, but Batista counters into a Batista Bomb attempt which Show also gets out of. That sends us to break. Back from commercial and Batista kicks out of a pin attempt at two. Show delivers a headbutt and a chop before burying a pair of rights into the midsection of Batista. Batista stops a headbutt with a kick to the gut, and shoulderblocks Show in the corner. Show fires him right back to the mat, and then walks on the back. Show goes to the floor, and then pulls Batista's ribs around the ringpost. Back inside Batista fires back with a few shots, but Show regains control with another body shot and then a forearm to the back. Show connects with a bodyslam, and then an elbow drop before going to reverse chinlock. Show lets go of the chinlock, and goes to the bearhug as the crowd gets restless. Lucky for them this isn't Hammerstein. Batista breaks the hold by going to the eyes, and then boots Show as he charges into the corner. Batista hits the ropes and delivers a pair of clothesline and a spinebuster. Batista sets up for the Batista Bomb, but turns right into a chokeslam. Batista rolls to the floor however. John Cena staggers out as a ref tries to restrain him. Batista slides back inside, and Show stares down Cena like an idiot. He realizes he's getting counted too late and barely fails to beat the count giving Batista the LAMEST WIN EVER at 10:45. Horrible match, horrible finish, but the right guy won so yeah. Whatever. If I ever see Big Show wrestle Batista again it will be too soon. Show and Cena stare each other down as we head out for the evening. Winner: Batista (Count Out DUD)
-Well Raw appears to be headed in a new direction as we saw potential elevations of both MVP and The Miz tonight. MVP especially as he appears poised for stardom after that promo and the reactions he got from the live crowd. Batista-Show was several levels of awful, and the finish sucked ass, but booking wise I guess it makes sense because Batista-Orton and Cena-Show were the logical Judgment Day matches. I'm sure those of you who got your hopes up thinking Cena would be out for an extended period are disappointed, but face it. His star power is needed, and he's still selling the injuries so no harm no foul. Nothing terrible though, and I'm interested to see where the new direction is headed.
Now that the draft is complete and Baklash is over....Its time to shake things up for the year. I really hope that something interesting happens tonight. A baby should turn heel tonight, or Kennedy should come back, or Christian should start a feud with Jericho since Y2J has no one in his league on SmackDown! Eh....lets hear some ideas on what you guys would like to see this year.

Big Show vs Big Dave for #1 contendership...I smell ratings!
I can see it now. Orton feuds with Dave for a few months ready for 3xH to return and recapture the title for the billionth time. He cheers, Vince cheers and we all die a little inside.

MVP FTW!

That opening segment with MVP offered the first refreshing moment on RAW for ages. So hoping he doesn't get buried, he's proved himself worthy of a main-event place. Far more than the two boring oafs competing for the number one contendership...

I think I am liking MVP as a face. He seemed to really enjoy himself. And the line about the Ambercrombie and Fitch models was pretty damn good.
Posted By: contraman (Guest) on April 27, 2009 at 09:26 PM
Wow, didn't see that comin. Good for MVP, I mean he's gonna lose, but still, maybe there'll be some run-ins or something, or a DQ finish that'll help make MVP look good at the end of it all.
Posted By: Nathan (Guest) on April 27, 2009 at 09:27 PM
Good for MVP (maybe)... and nice vest, Kendrick.

Congrats Vince! You finally allowed Lillian Garcia to say "The Glamazon" Beth Phoenix which is the normal and natural way to say it.
Of course, it was likely a mistake, and Lillian will get heat backstage for not putting the full retard spin on it.

Difference is u could harness Vickies heat and use it as a heat source for another wrestler. With X-Pac it's non existant, because everywhere he goes the power goes out.

I agree.
She made Smackdown unwatchable and now she's fucking up Raw.
Both she and Chavo are disgracing Eddie's legacy.
Vince isn't the only one

jericho called out goldberg and actually got the fued over all by himself for a while with a shitty blowoff thatnks to goldberg being a fucktard. Hopefully they allow this miz/cena thing to build for a few months and allow him to go over cena.
Also, why couldn't they let MVP get the better of orton for a bit longer before the run in ala taka/HHH from years ago. Nobody expected mvp to win but at least give us some near falls, make it seem as though orton is in peril, etc... damn i miss old school booking

@ Zingy:
Because his character is refreshing in it's psychoness. And he's more than decent in the ring.
And Cena isn't overrated. He gets a ton of hate and therefore can't be. Not everyone who is pushed is overrated just like not everyone who is devalued is necessarily underrated.

"Vickie is back out to make an announcement - I thought she was going to announce that she had contracted the swine flu."
That comment alone just made this one of the best recaps of all time.

@Obvious
A drive-by-ass whoopin' is when a babyface runs in, beats the heel's ass, and then runs out of the ring before the rest of the heel stable catches the babyface.
I coined that term.

oh please the main event wasn't that bad. If this were Big Show before his 2008 return I might agree, but it wasn't, and it wasn't unwatchable. Wasn't special either, but it was passable. It was building pretty well up till that lame ass finish.
Probably around **

Matt Hardy called Jeff "a heartless, uncaring, barbarian". Really, now? What does that make Matt Hardy for hitting Jeff in the head with a chair? Not only was it a chair shot, it was a cheap shot too.
