ROH Officially Suspends PPV
Posted by Larry Csonka on 06.10.2009
They finish up Friday with Take No Prisoners…
According to Pwinsider.com, ROH has opted to not continue their PPV deal with producer G-Funk Entertainment, a decision made several months back, and will finish their PPV run on Friday, June 12th with the Take No Prisoners PPV. ROH originally debuted on PPV in July of 2007 with the Respect is Earned PPV.
The word from inside the company is that they are "suspending" PPV operations. With ROH's new deal with HDNet, they could return to PPV down the line, with HDNet as the producer of the PPV's. The suspension of PPV tapings was not a surprise to ROH talent, since there were no tapings for PPV announced. The feeling is that the weekly TV show is more important to the future of the company.

Id agree with that

Makes sense, being taped so far in advance it was getting stupid from a storyline perspective and with the roster being so thin they can focus on TV now.

This was coming for some time now and quite frankly, its for the best for the fan base... less continuity problems and no more double dipping (for now) on shows. PPV is also not their main source of revenue, so while it sucks they won't get whatever extra money from the percentage of the PPV sales, this won't kill them off either. As Gabe said back in the day, low risk, low reward, or in this case, low reward, low risk.

Yes but if a major cable provider dumps HDNet, what good is the weekly TV show if you can't see it? People will have to watch the show online.

Great grammar, douchebag. Here's a perfect example of a typical ROH hater. Predict their death all you want, they aren't finished. Just regrouping.

Good! I hope they start doing PPVs with HDNET.(& hopefully live) It really pisses me off that I watch ROH & TNA in BEAUTIFUL HD every week for free, but then when I buy the PPVs they look like garbage. Why does the production value drop way down whenever I'm actually paying for it?!?!

This would be true... IF PEOPLE COULD ACTUALLY WATCH THE PRODUCT!

Did they suspend their PPV cuz it failed a drug test?

Even if you don't get HDNet (I don't), you can download episodes from XBox Live or PSN if you have a PS3 or PSP. That's how I've been watching it.

I'm actually happy.
Though the PPVs were generally stellar, booking around them really took away from the "anything can happen" feel of ROH, and made a lot of their between-PPV shows feel like filler (which was most of them), since no major changes could be made until the PPVs aired.

Wow, ROH makes TNA look like a well run business. ROH=EPIC FAIL.

Well like TNA learned, starting off with PPV really isn`t the smartest of strategies. I really hope that ROH does find a network with better coverage, as I do not get HDNet.

As folks have said, this is no big loss, and actually a necessary step if they expect to grow.

I was always kind of curious as to the mindset of a troll, you know? I mean, why would they do what they do?
But then I remember, I was kind of a little douchebag when I was ten years old too.

Look - the WWE is trying to promote 3 "Brands" and they are stretching the wrestling audience thin.
There is a limited market for wrestling - especially with the way our country is being spent into the toilet.
There isn't enough support for PPV's from three wrestling companies as well as MMA.
It's economics, not some great business plan. TNA will fall next and then the E starts to really feel the lose buys and MMA will be the last man standing.

It's ROH. A lot of people watch the show online already.

Suspending PPV helps ROH's storylines and angles and such, in that they no longer have to book around continuity problems due to their PPV.
But they've still got TV, and that's still taped a while in advance. Same problem no matter how you slice it. Not that it bugs me, but I think people forget that getting rid of PPV for now does NOT solve their continuity issues.

Better question, so when is Take No Prisoners going to be available on DVD since I have no desire to buy the PPV (I went to the show and just want a memento)?

Cheer up little buddies...Uncle Vince will buy them out and make the Big Show the RoH champion. This will of course make 25 people really angry... The rest of the world will just say "meh"

"...getting rid of PPV for now does NOT solve their continuity issues."
The difference is that the TV tapings are done a few weeks in advance, while the PPV tapings were done MONTHS in advance (at least 2, though I think it's closer to 3).
Plus, the TV tapings are less likely to be "money" shows -- meaning that they aren't going to hold off booking a title change because they're waiting to film it for a PPV (case in point, Jerry Lynn becoming champ).
So, sure, it may lead to some "spoiling", but it will go a long way towards fixing the continuity/predictability issues.

"Well like TNA learned, starting off with PPV really isn`t the smartest of strategies"
I hope you're not serious. Because TNA ran those weekly PPVs, they've gotten a prime-time 2-hour show, monthly PPVs, and large-scale backing, and are consistently pulling in decent ratings.
I'll go all day and night on how stupid TNA's booking tends to be, but nobody can say they haven't worked the business end of it nearly perfectly. They turned a concept that nobody thought would work into a viable company, and that's something to give them an immense amount of credit for.
The problem with ROH's PPVs were that they hosed continuity and unpredictability of the product by being filmed 2-3 months in advance.
